I'm sorry for the re-upload guys. There was a problem with the original video's frame rate and RU-vid's playback that needed to be addressed as it was not properly representing The Surge's gameplay. PLEASE!!! Feel free to leave comments and feedback about the game. I spoke with the Creative Director of the game and I can comment on some aspects that were not in the demo. I'll try to answer everyone. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel!
TerraMantis from what you played do you think its worth looking more into the game has my curiosity my main problem is the same people who made lord of the fallen...bleh
Thememelord3726 actually PAX is a pretty easy boss, ‘cause if you just stay between its legs and hit them continuously, it’ll mostly fall down and temporarily deactivate, giving you the possibility to finally hurt it.
Well, if nothing else I'm impressed with how clever that security bot boss fight is. That tells me this isn't just "sci-fi Dark Souls", it's taking advantage of its setting to do some cool new things with the formula.
From what the Creative Director said, the first boss is actually the most straight forward. I'm excited to see what the bosses have in store for us as well.
Something tells me when the full games released we will encounter another security bot boss but fully repaired, can use its main weapon also a optional boss but thats just a guess on my end.
Corvus Remalius How so? I beaten the GAME alry , on my NG + rn! How is the first boss glitchy for you? PAX boss , just make sure once you hit it till the orange bar is full , wait till it jumps away a distance to fire his rocket barrage , immediately rush towards him right underneath its leggings and it bring it down then you proceed to bash the crap outta it
Yes, you're exactly right. The gear and implants you choose to equip are what make your character unique since there is not traditional stat or attribute system where you allocate points from leveling. I actually really like this system as you're not pigeon holed into a specific build, you can swap gear to fit the situation if it calls for it. Again, very much like Monster Hunter if you're familiar with it.
Klein I agree. I think people will, at first, be worried about challenge runs because you absolutely are forced to level up your rig to progress through the world because you have to in order to "overload" doors, generators, etc to progress forward at times. But with the way the gear/rig system works you're defined by the gear you equip, so essentially as long as you never upgrade or craft higher level gear then you'll be The Surge's equivalent to a SL1 run.
Yes, unfortunately there was an issue with RU-vid and some people's playback of the footage causing their FPS to be shat while not effecting others at all. This properly rendered and re-uploaded version will not have that issue, this is a true representation of The Surge's frame rate. RU-vid is at the top of my shit list lately if I'm being honest.
Someone like me hates randomized loot. The fact that I can see an enemy and cut them up for their gear appeals to me a lot. Super excited for this game.
I'm pretty excited to see how this game reviews. I was initially not a big fan of the timer to retrieve scrap but I noticed that killing enemies extends the timer duration which should make it more of a driving force rather than a nuisance. Although I could see a problem with accidentally starting a boss encounter, dieing, and then being unable to farm before trying to take down the boss. Overall though the limb removal loot idea has me very interested.
Yeah, I always reserve my judgement for the final game. From what I've played though it's good and there's room for something great. We'll just have to wait and see.
Thanks, Andy. I'm happy I was able to represent the game faithfully. I'm kind of in the same boat too. Before the demo The Surge was kind of just something that was on my radar, but now that I've spent a fair bit of time with it I'm definitely looking forward to jumping into the complete game.
How does this game compare in feel and quality to Focus' other souls-like ARPG Lords of the Fallen? I liked that game, but it had some serious issues. I would like to know if you think this game is better, worse, or just not able to be compared.
I did not like Lords at all. I got to the third boss and quit. The Surge handles and feels infinitely better than Lords. It's mechanically a better game, plain and simple. That said, the segment I played was only about the first 2-3 hours, I cannot speak to the game in its entirety. Overall, I'm looking forward to playing the whole game come release now.
so far everything is looking good for The Surge i loved the thing of scavenging parts of enemies that get our attention and the combats looks very fluid. on the design of the level it looks great, didn´t saw any envirometal hazard that could kill us or that we could use to kill the enemies but i´ll wait till the wait is released for that.
Perhaps I will be the voice of dissent here since I loved Lords of the Fallen. Yes, it was clunky, not as polished, and took me a while to get into, but once I understood the rhythm of combat, I had a blast with it. I view Deck 13 having co-developed Lords of the Fallen as a very positive thing. I'm skeptical about the targeting of body parts. Suppose you're facing multiple enemies and need to react fast. How easy is it going to be to use the controller to target a specific body part on a particular enemy that doesn't involve cycling through them all? It seems it would be frustrating in these situations. Are you vulnerable to attacks during executions? Combat looks great! I am really liking the sound design and the gore. All in all, I am very excited about this game.
Targeting enemy body parts is extremely simple. In The Surge, unlike in a Souls game when you're locked-on the right joystick does not cycle between enemy targets, instead when you're locked-on to an enemy target you move the right joystick in the direction of the body part you want to target. Up goes to head, right goes to right (their left) arm, down left goes to corresponding leg, etc. In The Surge the LT/L2 button is instead used to cycle from one enemy target to another. So there's no conflict between trying to cycle between body parts and trying to cycle between different enemies because both functions have isolated controller buttons. Regarding executions, just like in Souls when you're performing a backstab or riposte, as far as I know in The Surge you are invulnerable during executions. Hope that clears some things up.
TerraMantis in the souls series, you can cycle thru enemies while locked on, its an option in the settings. cheers, good video btw, I'll look into this game more thanks to you.
Jaime Padilla co-developed isn't really the right term for what happened. from what i know they created lords of the fallen and had a shithead of a publisher who interfered with every decision they made. they still had to do most of the work though until the game wasn't really their own creation any more...
Haha... I actually knew exactly what you were talking about because I timestamped that exact armor to someone else in the comments. Yeah, it's pretty badass.
TerraMantis that was me! there's that nano-shit flying around there too ;). but seriously, that armor looks like some crazy anime nonsense there and I dig it!
was if-y about the game. but your video did a good job breaking down this game. most people just compare it. you took your time to analyze its qualities. good job. ill keep an eye out for this game.
I can't wait for this game! I was actually a fan of Lords Of The Fallen even with all its glitches I felt It had a lot to offer for those who really gave it a chance. And I hope more developers get inspired by the Souls formula as well, games need to be challenging as well as entertaining and Games like The Souls games or Nioh or even Nier Automata have the perfect amount of both :D ... Great video as always ;)
Something else to mention (that's probably already been brought up already): If you kill an enemy on your way to retrieving your scrap, you add 10 seconds to the timer.
reward system looks amazingly well done. Not only does it gives you the freedom to choose what you want, it also gives you reason to utilize the gameplay mechanics it presents to you.
after seeing your gameplay and review of just the demo, I am honestly excited for this game. thank you for bringing, yet again, some solid information to me.
You're welcome! Your feedback is greatly appreciated. I was in the same boat with The Surge. Before playing the demo it was just kinda on my radar, now I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the full game.
I liked this video. The tone felt objective and professional (as opposed the psuedo-enthusiasm you get from other RU-vidrs). I also liked how concise it was, keeping on point throughout without diving into tangents or long winded analogies. One criticism I have is that I noticed some of the footage was from official trailers/walkthroughs, as opposed to footage recorded yourself. I have no problem with it being included but it does muddy the water as to what I'm seeing is B-roll provided by the developer or footage that is directly reflective of the game in its currect state. Perhaps the footage provided by the devs could have some unobtrusive small print in the corner when it's on-screen to highlight this? As for the game itself, it looks fun. Especially as someone who likes the gameplay and storytelling of Dark Souls/Bloodborne but not the fantasy theme. One concern I have about the limb targeting is how easy it is to target a particular limb in the heat of battle. Do I have to look at the limb to target it (which would make targeting the legs of fast moving enemies a pain)? Or do you target the torso by default and then cycle through to the limb you want? Also is there a way to tell from a distance the stats of an enemy's potential loot from a distance, such as by scanning them, to help plan out which limbs to target for preferable rewards?
A Nice new and needed twist, for those who are not into the super hard core "Souls" game play or who like myself found "Lords of the Fallen" a bit too hard to get the hang of playing. Thank You, for the the info.
I see tons of potential in this game.Really excited to pick this up when it comes out.I hope there will be dlc adding more weapons bosses and more just overall content.
After hearing the trailer for the surge 2 I decided to re-download the surge and give it another try.... man oh man I don't know why I never gave this game a try. This is now my new favorite game
From the look of what was shown here it's definitely seems like Deck 13 have taken quite a few steps forward from Lords of the Fallen and are making a game like the sci-fi souls I always wanted.
I hope to god this one lives up to the quality of presentation here, Lords of the fallen gave me blue balls, this game here though looks very promising.
They're not in the base game though. They're added with the free Cutting Edge DLC. And they're just... regular human enemies ( So not the clunky zombie-like ones you see more often. ) using the ANGEL VI gear set ( Great set BTW. ).
But they're still there, even if there are from a dlc. The set is nice for beginners. Better set is the sentinel guard uniform, mixxed with hazmat legs, no full armor set bonus but it works well, I easily beat the game once I got that set
this could work I do hope for a good storyline. I assume hoping for a giant missle launcher and machine laser is unlikely though. Ooh temporary weapon pickups, really strong but limited ammo
it's got this kinda sweet slickness with its combat fluidity which reminds me of bloodborne especially the sliding move feels like the old hunters bone if I'm not mistaken... the complexity comes in with implants if equipped right.... and scrap time limit creats this sense of tension especially when you need it for a quick upgrade... Overall it seems fun and fresh... and again killer video man \m/..
Implants work very similarly to Blood Runes or Rings from DS in many cases, but some work like consumable items as well with charges that refill when resting at the MedBay. Also, no, from what I've seen you do not craft your weapons at all, they are the one item that drops from an enemy and you can equip it right away. Armor pieces though need to be crafted. After you chop someone's leg armor off you get a schematic to craft that leg armor. Chop off a few more legs and you'll get the components needed to craft it. It's pretty simple. Also, severing body parts is not a 100% chance to get that schematic, but it's pretty close. I think the more you strike that body part the more the percentage goes up.
I haven't bought one single new release in 2017 but this game might just change that. I liked lords of the fallen for what it was, helped fill a void until dark souls 3 came out but it was very rough around the edges and the world design felt clumsy and thrown together. While playing the surge is there the same sense of fear at losing your experience etc like dark souls?
I hope they tighten up enemy combat AI! The game looks solid, kinda reminds me a bit of Megaman and Deus Ex in its art style. The modular armor is awesome, really cool for people who don't like equipping 3 items and having them cover his whole character (overall/offhand/weapon for example).
From looking at the gameplay, it seems fast paced and fluid with quickly regenerating stamina. Although, looks and feel are two different things. On a scale of Lords - Dark Souls 2 - Ds1 - Ds3 - Bloodborne, where does it fall on fast paceness?
+TheRagefires From the way the consumable items have a designated button like blood vials and the speed and pace and feel of combat, The Surge definitely is most reminiscent of Bloodborne.
So, here's a question for you, Steve: What would you consider to be a problem/problems with the game? Aside from the lack of story for a demo (which is understandable). What are concerns you have about the game as a whole based on what you've seen so far? Also, the Italian beef I have right now is delicious
I'd say what I'm concerned with is the fact that it's a single-player. That means you're unable to farm bosses with friends or random people online. Also, bosses don't have a 'Soul item' (that I'm aware of) like in Dark Souls which is something you get to incentivize multiple playthroughs to make different items with the soul. I know there's a NG+ in The Surge, but what i'm saying is between the lack of multi-player and (potentially) the lack of boss 'souls' what will incentivize me to want to playthrough more than one time? I'd say my biggest concern is longevity. Right now it looks like it's worth one good playthrough, and nothing is wrong with that, but I'm worried about the lifespan of the game.
I imagine there'll be a character customization screen at the start where you can choose gender, "class", etc. etc. but also the color of your clothes and rg.
Game looks awesome. One Question though, not sure it was in the demo: Say you dont like the new look of your armor, can you use old equips as "costume" while keeping the newer stuff/stats?
You mean keep a new piece of gear's stats/effect but remodel its appearance to an alternate piece of gear's aesthetic? From the demo the answer is definitely no. I don't know though for the entire game. I'm leaning toward no though.
Let me preface this by saying my opinion is very skewed. For me, dark souls 1 and bloodborne are the best out of the souls series, reason being their simplistic yet fast and intense One on One style of gameplay. There wasn't anything like targeting limbs or worrying about the loot you'd get from the target (usually). It was more about life and death and the want to proceed rather than loot being the main drive to press on. From the gameplay I saw here, the addition of targeting certain limbs only slows down the gameplay. Another point is everything you said about gear progression. Once again I think simplicity is key here and dark souls 1 is as simple as you can get. Looting people for "tech" and having bonuses for complete armor sets makes the game sound like progression in the story will heavily be based on gear rather than skill. The fact that combat revolves around looting better, more powerful equipment only makes me believe this more. I haven't played the game, so maybe I'm just talkin out my ass but while this game does seem to innovate, I feel it's missing what the souls series really pioneered; simple tools and controls for the player to create their own combat style and give them the reigns without making things unnecessarily complicated. I honestly think this game will still do well, and I hope it does but it's just not for me.
This looks pretty great! I don't want to get my hopes up, but this does seem pretty wonderful. After the Ringed City, I'm very sad to see Dark Souls go. As much replayability as the Souls games have, it's nothing like experiencing a Souls-like for the first time. So I'd like to ask: do you think this game will scratch my Dark Souls itch?
Yeah, I think it will scratch that itch. It might not be as satisfying of an scratch because I doubt The Surge is as long as a Souls title and it doesn't have co-op or PvP to give potential added longevity, but overall, from a gameplay standpoint, it definitely has a Soulsborne feel to the combat and boss encounters.
I've heard about this game awhile ago and it seemed good but I wasn't really sure what I thought about it cause I didn't get to see a lot of the game. The video I saw was the devs talking about the game and showing some gameplay. When I saw a video about Surge again it was right after I saw a video for Let It Die which I played and little a little bit but haven't played it in a long time and i think I linked Surge with Let It Die. After seeing ur video though I'm a lot more interested in the game
+Ineedmoney I played Let It Die. It was fun for a short time but definitely held back by free to play mechanics. Goodish game though for F2P. Anyway, I'm glad I was able to clarify some aspects of The Surge for you.
So I got this game a while ago. Played it a couple hours. Haven’t touched it since. It’s so 1 note. Abandoned factories, robots and cyborgs, another abandoned factory. For the life of me I couldn’t find my way around the 2nd area. The weapons were meh too. The dual tonfa weapons and the chainsaw sword are the only real stand outs. If the locales and weapons were a lil more diverse, maybe I’d go back. I do like the storing souls mechanic though
Well i have to say. I liked Nioh this year as one of the first "Dark Souls" like games really much. The first Trailers of the Surge had me like, mehhh. But the Gamplay from your channel, and some other German channels had me really intrested. Maybe the Zombielike freature comes from the Rig itself, looks like something broke and the human dide, so the "tools" work alone. The Dodges are a bith to "wide" for the first look. But all in all it looks like a Good sucsessor of Dark Souls. (Btw Deck 13 made Lords of the fallen, not extremly good game, okayish, and they said they want to imrpove after this). think the surge is a good start, when the bosses are cool.
Well not to sound stupid but since then game doesn't have a tutorial showing how to equip your crafted items and how they implants work briefly would help
I agree, I hope they release this bit for people to test. As for LotF I also didn't not like it much, quit after the third boss. The Surge simply plays better and is technically a better game from the ground up. At least that's how I feel about it. I'm looking forward to its release now.
That's great to hear. I have been blowing up any social media post about the Surge with a request for a playable demo. Fingers crossed they hear my request lol
Is this game like only one way ? I mean you play the story, kill all bosses and 'that's' it ? Or are you able to explore the world with maybe some secrets and grind to upgrade even further
I personally don't mind not being able to customize a character as long as they make a good character to play as, from what I've seen, Warren seems pretty plain, but that may be intentional. Nevertheless I'm still excited for this game.
I'm in the exact same boat. I have no problem with a fixed protagonist, but if a game is going to force a character on the player then it had better be justified.
Any idea on whether or not the game will have different difficulties? looks interesting but don't want to jump not a game thinking it will be too hard like what i've heard about dark souls. Might be able to find the time to play the game, but not the time to master it.
Thanks for the Video! Seems to be a nice game tho, propably gonna buy it. I think the Boss-Mechanics, the Equipment-System and Implant-System look the most interesting. I like the Combat System, because im into Souls-Borne-Games anyway. I like your Videos, always interesting and learning something new, thumbs up!
There are 'backstabs' but the enemies I hit when them were struck so hard that they died in one hit. So... not that I know of. Also, unfortunately no PvP, so no ganking.
+TerraMantis the best part of the souls games are the unusual things like invading and co-op in my opinion you continue to play a souls game for years after its release or even prime because of the multiplayer systems
Rather than souls-like, the gameplay looks to be somewhere between lords of the fallen (which was nothing like dark souls) and dead space. My hopes is that they improve from where they went wrong in lords of the fallen. Namely weapon and enemy variety, clunky combat that forces you to fight in a specific way, and terrible gimmicks (like if ceaseless discharge insta killed you anywhere on the map if you didn't take advantage of a gimmick it tells you about in a message hidden in the far corner of the boss arena). From what I've seen in the video they've removed the whole class restriction system and allowed you to use any weapon you like (big fan of that) and instead made it so you have to get kills to improve your damage with the weapon class (as seen in another demo review). There was other stuff I wanted to mention but I forgot what it was while writing this long ass comment
'comment re-post': I'm going to wait for the reviews first, as Lords of the Fallen was painfully average. Also, great video as always, are you considering doing more videos on this title?
I did not like Lords. I got to the third boss and quit. This is much better from what I've experienced, it just plays better. But again, this is just based off a 2-3 hour demo, I can't speak to the full game. =) Thanks Reb, a re-posted comment is honestly very important. I appreciate it. As for future content, not sure. We'll see after I play the final release. It's likely-ish though.
I actually really enjoyed LotF. I played it before I played Dark Souls though. I considered it to be like Dark Souls for beginners. What were your issues with it? Genuinely curious, because I didn't notice anything inherently wrong with it, though I might if I went back and played it again, being able to compare it to Souls.
The story is crappy in Lords, there are some build imbalances, whereas in DS, you'd be able to make various builds and be efficient with them, in Lords, the best bet is to get yourself suited with heavy af equipment and tank everything. Works wonders. Another thing I personally didn't enjoy with Lords is it samey nature. There are like 3 levels and 2 of them are snowy castles... Obviously, these are personal grievances and a somewhat direct comparison to DS. But I do agree with you, strangely enough, there is nothing inherently wrong. It's just poorly designed here and there.
