I got 3 dogs and I will have my baby in about 5 weeks.. Fiance mom is worried about dog hair being on the baby.. But I mean.. Its part if life.. Especially my life for over 6 years now.
Listening to your talk on people bringing essential oils to the hospital makes me think of people's lack of consideration for others. Smells of oils makes me sick with headaches for hours on ends, I can imagine being a nurse and having to assist someone under those conditions.
Karen Amaya I’m a RN & this has kind of become an issue even on other floors of the hospital! We’ve started not allowing diffusers at all because of all the potential effects for those around with sensitivities. I personally love EO’s but it’s definitely not okay in a hospital setting to have them diffusing, nor do I think it should be in any public setting honestly. There are definitely people that are just completely lacking consideration for others around them by diffusing but I’ve also come to find that a lot of patients truly had no idea that others could have allergies/sensitivities to EO’s. They’re definitely victims of EO’s being marketed as completely harmless/“natural”
An alternative to consider (instead of a diffuser which forces everyone around into your essential oils), is a rollerball to either sniff as needed or to apply on yourself (I have two rollerballs from Saje that I enjoy). Bringing a diffuser to a public space is so inconsiderate! Especially to staff members that may be sensitive (medical personnel are humans too) - you don't want to trigger your labor nurse's migraines!
If I chose to bring oils to help the process and make me feel more comfortable in my situation I will:) my main concern isnt going to be other people while having a child!
@@isntshelovely5823 The oils might make the people assisting you feel sick with a headache or stomach or asthma problems. So what you said is really insensitive to the people who are helping you deliver your baby healthily.
All of this depends on insurance and if a patient is self pay. “The hospital provides” also means patient pays. Being required to get itemized statements has taught me so much about what I should bring and what I can refuse so that I’m not overcharged. Also even in the US not all hospitals have resources to provide even things like diapers. I’ve been in a hospital that only had a sample pack and after that the patient needed to have diapers and wipes. It’s a good idea to talk with the billing department before check in.
Willow Lane good point! For things like medications, there is definitely a charge that can be controlled by not taking the medications. For diapers and pads and stuff I’m not sure how you could refuse and not be charged since there is no where that I can say patient declined pads and mesh panties. We just put in a “vaginal delivery fee” into the computer and I think it includes those things. Ugh, insurance is so frustrating!
@@cynditran2036 This right here. $4 A PILL for it? Sorry, that’s ridiculous. So if the only way I can avoid that exorbitant charge is by not taking the medication, but I’m not allowed to take my own, what I’m getting out of this is that my options are 1) way overpay for a simple pain-killer, or 2) be in pain for 2 days until I get discharged. Not great options. :(
I remember when I had my 3rd baby. There was this gal who had a baby girl who was in recovery that couldn't afford to stay in the hospital past the recovery time. She looked so terrible and so much in pain, I asked the nurse if the gal could have my bed for a few hours(??) I felt FINE....and that nurse gave me the NASTIEST look...WOW!!! They wouldn't let me give the gal my (it was a private room as well) room...which I thought was wrong. I didn't understand WHY they wouldn't allow that.....other than maybe insurance??? The funny thing was that her baby girl was so cute! The minute she was laid in that clear cradle the nurses all remarked on how the baby lifted up both of her arms and just left them there on each side of her head!! So cute....
Definitely bring a nursing pillow. I was as low maintenance as I could get as far as what I brought. I basically only brought a change of clothes, lip balm, dry shampoo, and a tooth brush. I didn’t want to be one of those girls that looked like they were moving in. BUT I wish I brought my boppy!!!!! The pillows were hard for me to get just right. I had a very hard time breastfeeding and it was very emotional. As soon as we got home and I used the Boppy, it was much smoother sailing. I didn’t realize how much easier that thing would have made my life. So if you’re debating, just bring it. Especially if you’re larger chested like me
I agree with this! I have 4 kids and I didn't bring the boppy for my first and the pillows were tricky and wouldn't always support comfortably each time. Plus it was a hassle to prop several pillows each breastfeeding session. Brought the boppy after I had my other kids and had no regrets! I also pack minimally because its just easier.
It helped with my uterus. I have had two baby’s and the first time I tried the hospital pads and mesh undies and my flow was just way to heavy. So the second time I just brought depends (or as we call old people diapers). I have a great suggestion invest in a microwaveable animal for the cramping. Or for c-section incision. Mine is freezable as well. I had a natural birth both times and that “weighted” soft animal was so nice to have on my swelling
HAHAHA I’ve packed these for myself and honestly whenever I see them in my hospital bag I get so happy because I feel prepared in case anything feels uncomfortable in the hospital
As a soon-to-be labouring mother I definitely appreciate you bringing up essential oil diffusers. I have quite severe allergies to conifers and they really like to put pine and Juniper and all sorts of things in those essential oil blends. The last thing I want is to show up at the hospital in labour and in pain and end up having an asthma attack on top of that
A-freaking-men! I'm super sensitive to any kind of mint variety, it bothers my asthma, gives me a migraine, and straight up makes me want to puke. Patchouli is the same thing. That is the LAST thing I want to deal with in the throes of labor.
@@beatricereilly7467 Maybe try some essential oil rollers? That's how I use mine without them being diffused into the air so they don't bother anyone else.
I agree on the breast pump however I did bring my flanges (breast sheilds) from the pump to make sure a lactation consultant could make sure they are sized correctly and I'm really glad I did as the ones that came with my pump did not fit me and many moms dont know that flanges are not a one size fits all. I needed to buy new flanges as soon as baby and I were home. So if you're unsure of your flange/breast shield size, I highly recommend bringing them with just to be sure.
My insurance was iffy on whether or not a lactation consultant could come to my house. Glad I took advantage of the consultant at hospital who also gave me a different size flange no charge.
@@nausheenali6138 yeah the pillows at my hospital are soooo flat and my boppy is definitely more stable. Definitely bringing that for this babe. Wish I had it for my others.
My boppy pillow was my FAVE hospital item for baby! I had a C section and it made holding him for feeding so much more comfortable for me. Also for my husband when he was holding baby but also was FaceTiming family, it was great having that support under baby. 10/10 will always bring my boopy to the hospital!
Same! All I wanna do is eat! I had some pretty bad morning sickness the first like 2-3 months(I’m 6 months now) and it was SOO bad I could barely eat! But I swear, when she said MEAT AND POTATOES!!! omg. I’m going to Walmart right now and buying a Roast to cook tonight! It sounds so yummy right now!(: Lol

Great info! I did bring my Boppy Pillow and baby socks and I enjoyed having both items. My babies were naked most of our hospital stay because we did so much skin-to-skin so it was nice to keep their toes extra cozy. Also, Anyone who has a mom or grandma, or aunts, or sisters, knows that people always want to unsaddle baby when they come to visit to see baby's hands and feet, etc (haha). Keeping those socks on was nice for those moments. And if you lose them, there are tons more where they came from! lol

I’m sure I’m late (obviously) but I hope you had a great pregnancy and, I’m also sure now you know how prepared you were. For my first baby I packed things I didn’t end up using and those were extra clothing. Because the nurses would much rather you use the hospital gown.

I didn’t know the breastfeeding pillow would be such a hot topic! What I didn’t explain fully in the video is that I don’t find the breastfeeding pillows (boppy especially) to provide enough support and lift, and I often find women who solely rely on it to be hunched over the baby bringing their breast to the baby instead of bringing baby to the breast. But that being said, it seems like a lot of mamas have really enjoyed having a nursing pillow in the hospital. So, my advice would be to pack one in the car and bring it in if you need it! 💗💗
I find that true as well. I'm pregnant with my fists kid and I've had a Boppy since I had my first. I never really found it helpful. I always used it more for sitting baby up.
I brought my brestfriend pillow in the car and I didn’t have my husband bring it in. But when I got home and used it I wish I had brought it in because it was such a help and was easier than stacking several pillows and it straps around you so it’s not sliding away from you.
Nurse Zabe in my experience with moms I’ve learned that they are quite necessary for very short/petite women. I’m quite tall so they’ve never worked for me but if it makes mom more comfortable.....eh
When I had my son I had an inflatable my brestfriend pillow that really helped. It didn't take up much space and I was able to get used to what I would be using at home.
The essential oil diffuser tip is a good one. I can’t imagine smelling someone else’s perfume/oils/cologne when I’m trying to give birth or accidentally causing someone else pain.

Im a first time momma, currently 38 weeks and this was so reassuring 😭 ive had my bag ready for like a month now 😂 and was going to take my breast pump and boppy with me because im so unsure. I feel better about leaving it now. Less stuff to worry about / carry.
And if you're worried, you can totally leave them in the car! Many women have commented that they liked having their boppy, but I personally didn't find a need for it. Good luck with your delivery!

This video makes me less scared because I’m getting induced Tuesday and I was watching what I’m bringing in my hospital bag videos and made me feel very unprepared but this video shows you really don’t need all the extra things people always bring thank you for easing my mind!

I love these videos. I already had my first child and somehow I still enjoy watching these. One comment about #10 though-I was charged $20 for a single dose of ibuprofen in the hospital and $100 for a single dose of something that cost me $30 for a 90-day supply. I understand the need for the staff to know what/when I take, but next time I’ll think twice about not taking my own meds.

I’m a vet tech and it sounds like us telling owners “don’t bring your dogs blanket or bed or leash or toys UNLESS you are okay with us potentially loosing it” I work in the ICU/ER and hate to tell owners that your dog will not miss its bed. We have orthopedic beds. You can bring a shirt or blanket with your scent but it may get lost. And we wash them within 24 hours anyways for hygiene and your scent will be gone.
Or at least check with your vet first. My pup sustained a back injury last year resulting in, thankfully temporary, paralysis of his hind legs. My vet was a rehab specialist and ended up taking him and his bed home with her after work everyday to better accommodate him and his needs. It was no demand of ours that he keep the bed but a question and the whole staff was enthusiastic about it. We were happy to take the bed home if it was going to be a problem or if they had beds better suited for his needs.
Interesting. My Vet actually encourages us to bring their bed, blankets, toys, clothes, treats, meds, and anything else that they are use to having at home so they feel comfortable while at boarding. Even our baby who had double knee surgery this past year, they asked us to still bring all of his favorites so that when he woke the scent was there and he would be far more relaxed. I have never left missing a single item, we fill out our check-in paperwork and list the items we brought for them and we get every single thing back at pickup without fail and I have 4! 🤷🏻♀️ My Vet is huge too. It's a Vet with a surgery ward, they do physical therapy, have over night boarding and daycare and a pharmacy. Basically if your pup needs it, they have it.

@@annemariemiller4983 Well, you know if your doctor does the MaterniT 21 test (done at 12-14 weeks to check for down syndrome etc), you can find out the gender. I did at 13 weeks 😘

I needed just a few things-snacks, a huge robe for postpartum, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and soft clothes to wear home. My husband also had a small bag. But for real, I didn’t need much!

I think it’s so awesome that you care! For real! With both of my children’s births, I was at Inova Fairfax Hospital right outside DC. This is a LEVEL 1 hospital. These caregivers, (with the exception of my OB), could give a crap if I had a Boppy pillow, or if I had even eaten. The recovery nurse (after my son was born), told me my BP was too high to hold my son. I became hysterical after enduring 36 hours of labor and an emergency c-section. Unbeknownst to me, the monitors behind me showed my BP at 210/100 as I became hysterical. My OB stormed in and screamed at the nurse, who immediately gave me my son. My BP suddenly went down. Surprise, surprise. I was left alone a lot, despite paying astronomical premiums. The care was poor and I left both times after 24 hours, knowing that I would better care from my family. So, it’s really nice that you care about your patients and even what they bring.

I’m 23 and I’ve been having crazy baby fever and I’ve never been pregnant before, but I just want to say thank you for your videos they are so informative and gives me helpful insight to my research I’m doing before I truly decide a baby right now.
We have SEVERAL nurses that have migraines. Many essential oils trigger those with migraines and the nurses that are negatively affected by these suffer immensely. I’ve seen nurses re-assigned and/or leave the hospital with major migraines because patients have infused the entire unit with oils!
I get bad migraines from strong smells... I'm not a nurse, but now I'm paranoid about going in to deliver my baby, and having to deal with the peppermint-lavender smells wafting in from the room next door, while I'm trying to labor. 😅 the migraines are ROUGH.
@@Shawnielee1990 same. I had to go to urgent care a few times in my first trimester because of migraines and severe dehydration. There were so many people in the waiting room and other places that were wearing the strongest scents and doused themselves in cologne/perfume. I was constantly having to lay on benches outside the waiting room because of those smells. It's hard to be at your most vulnerable and having people in those spaces that would willingly make others sick with diffusers.
I wore comfy clothes (sleep t shirt, fuzzy pants, soft shorts, a hoody) while laboring and ended up naked. But I was very glad to have my comfy clothes in early labor and after baby was born. I was not going to be comfortable in a hospital gown ever so it worked best for me. But I would never ever go out and buy something expensive for the hospital.
With my first I didn’t bring the boppy and relied on hospital pillows to help with nursing. It was awful and so uncomfortable! With my 2nd I brought the boppy and it was amazing.. I felt like there was so much more support! We’re all different but I am so happy I brought it the 2nd time around!
Definitely check with your hospital regarding the pump. I asked once I was already admitted (back in November) and was told they would not provide me one unless it was a medical necessity.
I WISH I had brought my breastfeeding pillow the last time. I can't breastfeed without it. Was struggling so much in the hospital trying to position my baby to latch, it was so much easier with a breastfeeding pillow. Definitely bringing it this time.
I feel like this is a GREAT video! I'm about to give birth to my second baby and I packed ALL of the stuff you said not to pack (for my first) and literally didn't use ANY of it, except for the gown, which I didn't use for delivery because I knew it would get nasty, but for the second day for pictures. I remember stressing so much over what to bring, making a meticulous list, and we had SO much luggage to haul out of there and back into the house with a newborn. I love the suggestion to bring the stuff but leave it in the car. That way your poor hubby doesn't have to make 5 trips from the hospital room to the car. You are already going to have a bunch of stuff that people bring you (gifts) to take with you. I also recommend leaving the infant seat in the car until you discharge so it isn't sitting in the hospital with you trying to work around it while you're there.
Thanks for sharing this video. A lot of these things I didn’t know, for example I didn’t know they would supply you with any medications/vitamins you normally take.

My l&d nurse was so happy so see the boppy when she introduce herself on her shift. She said the thing is magic. This is my second and I’ll definitely bring it again.
I didn't bring my boppy with my first and hugely regretted it. I did with my second and had a much more comfortable experience and less frustration. However, I always put at least one pillow under the boppy to push it up high enough. I just love the structure of it to keep a new nursling in a good position for success.
Would like to add about medication use in hospital in US: As someone who works in hospital pharmacy, I would say bring it if it’s a highly specialized med the hospital may not carry (like brand name birth control or specialized expensive/brand seizure medication or antidepressant). Most hospitals have most generic versions of a lot of commonly used meds but they don’t carry every med under the sun due to cost (hence formulary list). A lot of hospitals want patients to use the hospital supplied meds due to liability reasons but in case hospital does not carry (I.e. nonformulary), most hospitals have pharmacists identify the med before patients can use in stay. If it’s an extended stay, hospitals may borrow meds from each other to meet that need but it’s rarer and depends on the health system. Be prepared (Idk specifically about L and D though) some hospital stays, home meds will be asked to not remain by bedside and either taken home or secured by hospital pharmacy and given back after stay due to liability reasons as well bc RN has to account for every med given and we don’t know if what patient brought in is true med quality and purity or not if they want to take it (I.e. wrong med in wrong bottle). If patients must use own supply due to hospital not carrying that med, pharmacy will identify it and let RN know it’s ok to use. That includes Rx and Over the counter meds.
I’m glad you talked about the diffusers because it’s actually something I hadn’t thought of and I had been wondering I could bring a diffuser. But now after watching this video I’m so glad I didn’t and upset somebody’s asthma or give anyone a headache! That’s the last thing I would want to do.

Or just bring it but leave it in the car, perhaps. It seems like a lot of moms have found it helpful to have, but personally I find that moms tend to place baby on the boppy and then bring the boob to the baby (straining their backs) instead of bringing the baby to the boob.

Yes yes yes to this whole video!! I almost wanted to buy my own hospital gown and I didn’t get a chance to and I’m super happy I didn’t. I ended up having a emergency c-section so it would have been completely pointless to have one. I had a robe afterwards and that was great when I had visitors. Also I hated essential oils when I was in labor & delivery waiting... the room next to mine had a diffuser and the smell that she had going was god awful! I asked the head nurse to have her turn it off.
With my first I packed a book in my bag for if I got bored even though I was having a planned c section. I soon learned that I had no time for reading my book after he was born. I was too tired or too preoccupied looking after him do my phone became my best friend
I wish people understood that essential oil diffusers only work in a certain square footage, others can't smell it in their room or on the floor or throughout the hospital 🤦🏻♀️

I just came across your videos and I love them. They are informative and entertaining... and your little man is adorable! I saved a couple to show my wife tomorrow. She is almost 39 weeks at this point with our first baby. When I asked her what she wanted to pack for snacks for the hospital, the first thing that came to mind for her were fruits and vegetables. I'm glad you validated my suggestion that we stick to nonperishables.
For the birth of my son 3 years ago, the nurse actually suggested (during my hospital tour) to bring my own basic meds, like prenatal vitamins, tums, or ibuprofen. But I’m sure every hospital is different. And something I didn’t think about until after when I received the hospital bills, was how much they charge you for basic medications! It’s crazy!
I would love to see like a Top 5/10 list from you! Or just general information about how to choose items like breast pump, baby monitor, etc... There are so many options these days I can't even decide how to choose it and when to buy it?

Honestly I was happy with my choice to bring the boppy it helped a lot when learning how to breastfeed for the first time, made it a lot easier for a new mommy like myself.
