I’m actually surprised to see Frontiers on this. I’ve heard nothing but good/decent things about it. And fans of the franchise that put up with the previous flops of the last decade seem to like it as well
Frontiers was great and genuinely fun, best one since adventure 2. I know people enjoyed mania but adventure 2 was the pinnacle for the series and frontiers comes close
Looking at your first entry: "EA quickly responded by removing all microtransaction elements" -> no they didn't respond quickly. They only did it as a last resort. It hit the point where it was aggressively rumored that Disney was about to forcibly pull the plug on their exclusivity agreement before any changes came (and Disney had announced they were forming the start of an internal development studio).
I still remember Jim Sterling’s review of Alone in the Dark: Illumination: “This is a co-op game where you constantly have to seek out light as a core part of the gameplay leading you to be neither alone nor in the dark!”
I remember it had the gimmick of you being able to choose which level you wanted to play. The devs said in an interview that they didn't mind if you skipped levels!
Personally, I really liked Frontiers. Yeah, the game is not perfect, but if they polish some of the mechanics and make the maps more interesting, we could get a pretty good sequel.
@@KingBongHogger Not so much for whatculture apparently. They say that going Open World is somehow a "soulless direction" for the franchise, which is pretty stupid.
It's a decent Sonic game which is something rare for the franchise. Sure it has issues but what game doesn't? Also it seems like no one will ever like the full 3D games. They just can't get a break even when Frontiers was a step forward for the future since we don't need 2D games forever.
Is a free world and people are free to like whatever they like buuuuut, saying that, not all Sonic fans want Sonic games only as 2D games, and a lot of us have been waiting for a good 3D Sonic game after years of bad games, and most of those of us are happy with Sonic Frontiers. I hope the 2D fans can have Sonic mania 2 at some point. I have the first game still in the box, but I just can't find the motivation to play it, it looks good, and I know is a love fan letter to the games, I also love a lot of Sonic 2D games from the genesis, like Sonic&Knuckles, the advance games are for me forgotten gems and I will play Sonic Mania someday, but maybe is that I honestly don't think a game series should stay in his 80-90s version for ever as the only way to be good, and is ok to let the series explore different paths. i personality think the Frontiers path is fun and promising.
Angry Joe: Instead of talking about improved gameplay, a new added campaign mode, revised multiplayer offerings or instead talking about HOW F**KING GREEDY AND STUPID EA IS!
Sonic Frontiers cannot be compared to Mania because while Frontiers was made by Sega, Mania was created by a niche fanbase blinded by their own nostalgia for a niche fanbase blinded by their own nostalgia. No one else.
While I prefer 3D Sonic to 2D Sonic, this is hardly a fair interpretation of what is a very polished game with tons of new content and post-release support to go with the nostalgia. Especially since the biggest bit of nostalgia bait, namely having so many levels from old games, was allegedly because Sega forced them to do that instead of just making more of their own new (extremely creative, polished, and well-received) Acts like they wanted to.
@@bluegold1026 Sprite-based graphics ≠ Genesis-era graphics. Sonic Mania put so much polish into an art style that is super popular and the Sonic fanbase that it would probably melt any Genesis that got within fifty feet of it.
"Very polished" because those who made Mania were super passionate about the franchise. What should have been done was for Sega to hire these passionate fans directly. They proved themselves worthy with their fan projects so put their passion to good use.
I am surprised Jules didn't touch on the worst offense of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5. Buying the game at launch with no internet meant you couldn't play the game. The "Day One" patch was 8 gigabytes because they were rushing to get the discs printed before they lost the license.
While it probably sounded good on paper, turning Alone in the Dark into a co-op affair with enemies who could be damaged by light sources, the end result meant that you would neither be 'alone', nor 'in the dark'.
The DS version of Star Fox Zero (or Star Fox Command depending on region) actually put EVERY control element on the touch screen except for the laser (which you could fire by pressing any button on the handheld). So you would constantly trigger a maneuver you did not mean to just by accidentally swiping in a direction too fast or too far because you meant to steer in that direction, or vice versa. I can not even begin to describe how atrocious these controlls were - all because the devs wanted to shoehorn everything onto the touchscreen.
One of Nintendo's strongest points is that they are willing to experiment with the medium and hardware beyond just getting making the same games and consoles but with bigger stats. One of Nintendo's worst points is that they sometimes get so far up their ass about doing that that they destroy an otherwise promising game because they refuse to think that someone might not want to interact with every single one of their weird mechanics all of the time.
10 games fans hated but reviewers loved also sonic frontiers WAY better than sonic mania, that game was trash, the ammount of bugs STILL IN IT TODAY put sonic 06 to shame (falling through random bits of level, going THROUGH bosses so they don't take hits at random times, a loading screen that lasts forever unless you turn it off and on again multiple times) honestly frontiers is the best sonic game we have had for YEARS
I’m going to start Frontiers soon but I always liked Forces more than Mania, which seems to be blasphemy until I realized I never actually got any clapback for that opinion. There’s a reason they stopped making games like the Genesis ones and that’s because they’re filled with such utter jank that was the general style at the time. Mania is an important game for sure but also one that only really appeals to those who grew up on the Genesis games. They definitely need to keep those guys employed with them though.
@@MrZer093 honestly I still enjoy the older sonic games don't get me wrong, but I don't think the older style should be put on a pedastal just because it's the old style, forces was abit off and I'd have liked more sonic missions but it was awesome to see abit more of a serious story, frontiers is abit similar where the story if you pay attention (cause it's not well explained) is interesting and serious as well. Mania was okay but forces and frontiers is way better especially since frontiers did what my favorite fan game did and mapped the speed button to the right trigger (or r2 for ps users) which makes it way better to control
So let me get this straight the name of the game is "ALONE IN THE DARK" and they made it co-op so your not ALONE anymore? Were you even IN THE DARK? Someone didn't understand the assignment.
With Star Fox Zero, it wasn't even the motion controls that were the issue. It was the fact that you had to look at both the TV AND the gamepad simultaneously. Want to fly? Focus on the TV. Want to shoot? Focus on the gamepad, but you risk crashing every 2 seconds. The concept MAY have worked as a couch co-op, but the game was not that.
The entire Tony Hawk saga is just heartbreaking to me. Just when it finally seemed like they figured out what they needed to do, that is remaster the old games and potentially create a new game using the exact same engine used to remaster the old ones, the company sells out, and all hopes are dashed. The first 3 games meant so much to me, being released when I was in high school and directing me toward skating and therefore shaping my interests and who I became as a person. Playing the remakes was like tracking back in time. I could almost squint my eyes and see my childhood bedroom in my periphery. After the trauma induced by the pandemic, it was a therapeutic and cathartic experience to transport myself to better days with the press of a button. I was so excited for the remakes of 3 and 4… and, well, it ain’t happening.
TL;DR: full-digital/Plug N play, full custom visuals, use your own music, mods, etc. What really sucks about this when it comes to guitar hero is that if you were to release nowadays are you have to sell is the guitarist cells and just have a digital version of the game and you could switch between aesthetics of each game (plus stylistic filters like Noir, film grain, and vhs) and just download tracks or utilize The games clever algorithm to generate button prompts for your own music library. Wanna play “Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Once More With Feeling” while looking like a caricatures of punk bands? Just pop in the CD-ROM! (whatever floats your boat, ya weirdo)
DS zeldas forced touch controls was pretty meh.. and remember when capcom tried to curb used game sales by with having undeletable game data/saves un the 3DS game, RE: Mercs
I don't agree with your view on Sonic Frontiers. While it is only an opinion that Sonic Frontiers is empty, I like it the way it is. It feels great to have Sonic run across open fields and it's your choice to play the mini games. You don't get much from them anyway that you can't get elsewhere
Does anyone remember the dynasty warriors where u started as a grunt soldier and had to upgrade yourself through the ranks to eventually u was a general with a squad of soldiers?
I'm surprised with how many people hated the games that Fable 3 and Fable The Journey weren't on here. I like Fable 3 ok but, I'm more than willing to point out its flaws and how much better it could have been. Fable The Journey was horrible although the story probably could have been fixed if they hadn't let Peter Molyneux actually have any involvement in it at all.
My go to example for this topic will always be earthbound when you market the game by saying the game stinks I don't think many people are going to get it
It's a shame that GH6 was suffocated before it had a chance to breathe. It was the first GH to offer some actual gameplay choices. You could choose from a roster of rockers who each played differently. You could have higher multipliers, more points for solo sections, or never fail. It was as if (Neversoft?) suddenly remembered that they were making a video game and not just updating a few visuals and a track list. I mean, ending EVERY SINGLE song in EVERY SINGLE GH game with "You rock!" accompanied by the same musical sting got tedious fast. If only they hadn't rushed sequel after uninspired sequel to market (and created their own worst rival by splitting with Harmonix), GH6 could have been the first of many entries with fresh ideas to explore.
Lol nah, Frontiers is the best Sonic game. The open world is fantastic, the speed feels exactly like it should, it has a story (honestly screw the minimal story 2D formula). Only possible complaint is it could use more level variety but that aside, this is where Sonic needs to be. Seems like everyone else agrees too.
Making maps way too big (Ubisoft Games). I dont mind an open world but maps that take 40 hours to fully explore? Too much, not to mention quest in such open worlds are usually the same especially in each marker area. Also not surprised EA games are mentioned more than twice.
So going Open World is a "soulless direction" for the Sonic Franchise? I'm sorry, but you're delusional if you think Sonic needs to stay in 2d or in simple platforming levels
Sonic Origins should have been on there. Some old, good Sonic games remade with the worst trends of modern games including splitting features like menu animations into DLC. AKA the new horse armour.
Nosgoth. Everyone long have waited for a new entry in the Legacy of Kain franchise and thought we were getting one but it ended up being Nosgoth, a F2P spin on the IP trying to chase the online Battle Arena genre that Overwatch was riding high on at the time. It was so rushed, broken, and disappointing it disappeared soon after coming to the market and we never saw another attempt in the LoK franchise sincr.
CBS/Scoplays StarTrek FleetCommand is missing on this list, it's offensive in microtransactions like Battlefront2 was and is buggy without IP hurting bad design and stories. Could easily be on 1st place on a list like this
Never played breakpoint and honestly don't care to even try it. But wildlands is still one of my favorite ubisoft games. Get a friend, a few drinks, and turn the Hud off and play on harder difficulties and it can be a really great game. Biggest problem is the poor optimization
Well I mean command and conquer has been a great game dame as age of empires. But can we take the time to remember Tim Curry's rendition of "in space" I though CAC was know for bad live action cut scenes
I normally agree with Jules, but I must disagree with Sonic Frontiers on this list. I actually really enjoyed that title. That might be though as the last Sonic game I had experience with was Sonic and Knuckles (Sonic 3) from my gaming days on Sega Megadrive. So I avoided the likes of Sonic 2006, so Frontiers was a new experience for me and made me really enjoy it, so maybe that’s why I enjoyed it so much, and others that’s experienced all the disappointment over the years, were expecting more from Frontiers, I dunno.
I hate the way these lists rip apart so many games yet give Fallout and the Elder Scrolls a free pass. All buggy mess, always graphically dated by release, terrible voice acting with awful animations. All things other games get blasted for.
I'm surprised no one talks about Street Fighter 5, it has loot boxes and in-game currency. True, it's not as bad as most EA or Activision titles but still.
Picking between whether EA or Ubisoft is worse is like a choice between two bowls of sh*t The only difference is the smell (Paraphrased Lewis Black joke there)
I feel like they didn't want to do TOO much at once, like the game already has a lot of risky bits too it and it works well enough. Even if it has issues its still fun and now they know they have a good core they can build on...hopefully well lol
Wildlands was awesome, Breakpoint got better after a bunch of updates (and i still play it from time to time even after 100% completion of the Achievements) and Battlefield 2042.... i realy hate that game, try it from time to time after an big update. But it is still very bad.
I hope Ubisoft and especially EA go under and their ip's are picked up by a decent company that can handle them better. I have found that people problems with motion controls is 90% their own fault ask you haven't set it up correctly or you just haven't the patience to figure them out and motion controls are usually the best way to play I dominate on Fortnite using motion controls as controller and even keyboard and mouse cannot provide the speed and accuracy of the motion controls.
reminds me of something i read in a VERY old book, about Light Gun peripherals: you need to have the Brightness setting of the tv/monitor JUST right. too dark and you can't hit anything, too bright and ANY shot counts as a hit.
@@ericb3157 I loved light guns the day my parents got me Time Crisis for the PS1 and you are very correct as long as your settings were correct and you zeroed your sights correctly the gun was deadly accurate do it wrong and yeah you have problems it's user error that has made motion controls and the kinect failures but it's developers fault the right joycons extra functions like the camera useless as nobody make use of them.
guitar hero live changed the buttons. they made it more complicated than it needed to be to former players who were so used to the 5 button neck, and of course the set list was awful.
Okay but I disagree 100% with Sonic Frontiers, yes the game has its issues but its still a blast and is a major step in a good direction ESPECIALLY story wise. Like it did more for Eggman as a character than basically any previous game has before
ok everything else yes but frontiers i feel like it was actually good mania was a good game but only bc it went back to old gameplay that everyone loved but frontiers actually did something different this time with some same mechanics from their old works and it actually worked really well
Battlefield 2042 isn't the only game that was a buggy, rushed mess, they really need to give game developers more time to finish their games, smooth out the rough edges, it's like I used to tell my boss when I worked retail "do you want it done quick or do you want it done right?"
Actually glad to finally hear something negative about Sonic Frontiers. I think the graphics and world design look very dull and lifeless. A blue hedgehog running and rolling around a big, empty-looking, washed-out-colors world. It visually looks out of place. Of course that’s a very unpopular opinion because I never heard anyone say anything against the game. But to each their own!
Sonic Frontiers, lazy? They were working with what was essentially a skeleton crew for an Open World mascot game, begged for deadlines to be extended so that they could make sure that it didn't fall into the pitfalls of Sonic '06, and got arguably the best writer from the Sonic comics to work on it like the fanbase head been clamoring for for years in a long desires departure from the disappointing writing style of the Meta era.
