@@TailHeavyProductions since i saw it featured on your channel i wanna own one, i loved nitro engines and always had a good understanding with them. In 1/10 cars, planes and the most difficult i found boats, specific riggers. The really struggle with their identity🖤 .. i always made me cry playing with those engines

I learned to fly (and build RC planes simultaneously) in a pretty dumb way - build>fly>crash>repeat. And there was at least dozen of crashed planes (both PNP and DIY) before I built and flew the first successful one.

this sounds like a dream as someone who loves doing engineering myself, tho the huge issue is money, an avrage remote for starting with rc planes is around 50€ which is WAY above any kind of money I ever touched in my life so I sadly cant even do that yet... appart if I can magically make my own remote with an arduino I got for free but there is way way more things that are expensive like motors and servo which I dont have acess to

I am 36, learned to fly with my dad when I was a teen, even though it was all buddy box learning there wasn't any gyros or anything then. Those ARF nitro kits they had back then, we had a 4 channel Cessna looking airplane, I remember having 3, and only having to buy new ones because of radio interference from a near by golf course any time the sprinkler systems turned on. This was when you had to have matching chips in your transmitter and receiver. The golf course put an end to that airfield as it used to take airplanes out of the sky everytime we were there. Now I have my one bedroom apartment littered with FT models, sheets of foam and wrecked or incomplete models hanging on the walls.

About the self leveling, rather than get an electronic one, get a plane that has a high dihedral and naturally tends back to level
@spindash64

Sidenote: High mounted wing with zero dihedral will behave similarly to a mid or low wing with dihedral.

If going the self taught route i suggest building the flite test FT Flyer. Its really easy to build and flies really well. Since its only 1 sheet of foam board its super cheap. Being cheap and easy makes easier to relax while flying and its no big deal if you wreck it.

Timely advice for all the newbies coming to the field this season! I'm largely self-taught as the instructors at my field were only interested in seeing how well I could fly a circuit. I routinely fly with much more advanced pilots and model my moves based on what they do.

400mm foamies taught me to fly. When I got onto a 1500mm Tasman trainer it was easy by comparison as it was more docile in the air. Passed my 'A' test (UK) within 4 weeks, and I was probably ready before that. So, another route.

Much of what y'all are saying in this vid is what I tell my boxing students. As a semi self taught rc "pilot", I love the info y'all put out. I've found that watching my flight vids, especially the on-board runcam, has helped quite a bit. We just need to be honest with ourselves. If the crash was our fault, find out why and how to do better. Can't be blaming everything on manufacturers or weather lol. Another great vid, y'all. 👊🏿💪🏿💪🏿

I learned how to fly with a GWS P51 Mustang. It was a wild first flight. I was able to fly it and land it. I knew the basics of how they flew and got lucky I guess. RIP GWS. I used to love those little foamy kits. They were like 29 dollars for the slope soarer version but you had to add all the electronics. But if you destroyed the airframe it was a cheap replacement and easy build.

Taught myself to fly RC helicopters (Hirobo Shuttle) in the backyard at age 12 (1990) when everyone tried to discourage me saying 'they're too hard' or tell me 'you have to fly planes first'. I spent a lot of time as a kid reading about how helicopters & planes worked which gave me the foundations. It can be done. 🇦🇺

Tried to learn to fly RC fixed wing, would constantly lose track of my aircraft's attitude and crash. Now I just fly FPV quads and have way more fun. The part about every input with fixed wing being small really got me, because flying FPV the opposite is true 🤣
@TailHeavyProductions
@TailHeavyProductions 19 дней назад
Bummer! FPV can be the same though - when we do air to air shots for our videos, getting in close proximity with a flying airplane with your quad and getting the shots smooth requires baby gentle inputs. I still have yet to master it and doubt I ever will. 😂 -Zach

I have been at this for more than half a century, and seen that most beginner crashes occur when the rookie tries to make the flight a social event. Enthusiastic non-RC spectators during your first 100 flights usually spell disaster. Try to be alone with your instructor and concentrate. That's the best route to a skill level where you can actually show off.

As a guy who learned flying FPV quadcopters by purely self-teaching (and crashing, and making mistakes) i found this video so over-the-top. But: When i tried out fixed wing RC aircraft i had my neighbour as a trainer to just show me the most basic things (trimming and CG especially) to start with. Rest was self-teching again tho, because foam can be glued. And now as i am learning to fly real aircraft i can totally sign every single point you mentioned...

My instructors were Brian Phillips, tail heavy productions, and Flite test. The first 2 years, I would crash almost every time I flew without a gyro. Then it just clicked. Now I can fly most planes well, and am fully comfortable with flying without a gyro. I was the only person I knew who knew how to fly, so I bought a couple planes for my fiends. One of them is hooked, But he never turns the gyro off and I haven’t seen him progress much lately. I think gyros are great but can ruin somebody’s learning capabilities when it comes to RC.

Me, self taught some 40 odd years ago. Back then there was no local club, nor flyers. no simulators, no videos. I now belong to a club but be able to have newbies fit in 3-4 flights on a normal weekend day can be an issue due to the number of people. 2-3 days a week can be a problem as weather and work tend to interfere.

I learned to fly without an instructor, but I did have advice on what plane would be right to learn with. This is critical. Start with a slow flying and very stable aircraft. It should have some dihedral, some washout, and smallish control surfaces. And again it should be slow so you have time to react to bad inputs in favor of good inputs.

Even the most unstable aerobatic airplane should fly strait and lever for a couple seconds “hands off” if trimmed correctly, a properly trimmed trainer should ideally fly on forever if the trim and balance is correct.

Here’s how I started a year and a half ago. I bought a used NX6 Spektrum transmitter for $200. I bought Real Flight Evolution for $99. And I bought a used Maule M7 for my banger for $150. So all in all. A little over $400 and I was pretty set. Now I can pretty much fly anything, didn’t waste a ton of money and learned to fly without a LOT of disappointment. I’ve rebuilt the Maule 3 times. Great idea to have a banger.

I do have a LOT of experience in hundreds of different simulators and games since I was a kid, tho even now, I dont have the money to even get a remote, so I am far from having the money to get the physical hardware to ever play with rc planes... I do have plans to make my own from scratch but no remote nor money for the basics like motors and servo and reciver, am kinda stuck... also, me having a verry crappy eyesight may make it a verry bad idea as we dont have a zoom irl nor an hud that shows where the rc plane is and then, I live in a country where it rains basically every days and it could randomly start snowing in april or may, so thats probably not great either

I have a shorter list. Get help and choose it carefully. If nothing else an experienced pilot can suggest or provide a suitable first plane and spot issues a begginer will miss. At every club there will be at least one person who is an excellent instructor and at least one person who only thinks they are a great instructor. If you just hang around and listen to the banter you will get an idea of who the majority thinks have the chops. If someone who doesn't even have a plane at the field comes up and offers help? Treat it suspiciously.

Wearing his AMA underwear too! There's at least one at every field. One of my "favorites" was a guy who actually reached down to adjust my needle valve. I rarely have an engine out and usually because I hold a dive long enough for the clunk to suck air. I don't recall any engine he "adjusted" ever running through a full tank at a steady throttle setting much less actually using it for aerobatics. Alot of the the people ignorant enough to let him help wrecked their engines.

I’m self taught but I am absolutely not the model to follow. I started with helicopters: coaxial to fixed pitch, then 250 size up to 600 size collective pitch. When I picked up a plane I could fly it but I attribute this to the muscle memory and stick control from helicopters. If I was straight off with an airplane I don’t thing it would have gone as well.
