I brought home a 14 week old GP from a farm 6 days ago. The first day I gave her a bath and clipped her nails, rinsed her ears, blow dried and brushed and she LOVED it, incredibly sweet the whole time. she is already going in her kennel without objection, she has never went to the bathroom in the house, once in the kennel but that was her second night in our house and she got water before bed without me seeing. She’s only barked a handful of times. She walks with a harness perfectly she just looks up at us with a smile both me and my 5 year old daughter. She already protects my daughter but in a very calm manner, she will get in front of her and stand as tall as she can and observe the “threat”. She listens to sit and come half the time. I know she will get into trouble as time progresses but so far she is the perfect dog.

@@medi214 I have a pyrenees mix. 80 percent pyrenees and 20 percent border collie. They are VERY demanding animals and like no other dog I have owned. They are very independent, very protective (they will bark at anything walking past your house) but they are wonderful! One of my most important commands working with my 3-year old Great Pyrenees female, Serena, is "It's O.K.!" That command lets Serena know that whoever is with me is our friend and should be allowed on the property. She therefore accepts my gardener and let's him on my property with or without me being present.

I specialize in rehabilitating highly abused Great Pyrenees. These 3 were quite a challenge when I stated working with them. I continuously integrate training into our daily activities, and we have a lot of fun together. Over time they became a unified and loyal pack. 🙏

Just rescued an 8 week old GP (my little Magnolia, Maggie as a nickname) this week and this video really helps!! The hardest thing right now is getting her to eat on a schedule, but I’m trying to help her adapt. Additionally, I’m trying to gently introduce her to three cats, any tips?
@mellowsadventures8285
@mellowsadventures8285 2 года назад
So with introducing a puppy to cats what I recommend is letting the puppy briefly look at the cats through a barrier and then distract the puppy using play or treats. Then I would recommend bringing them in the same room but keep the puppy secured on a leash. Instead of letting the puppy look at the cats distract them with food or play, once the puppy in calm around the cats allow them to meet with the puppy off leash, if the puppy gets too rough or starts to bark then go back to having the puppy on leash until they learn to be calm around cats.

This Video is really great. I see my little Belle in all of this! shes sometimes super unsure on what to to and she taught me to be confident enough for both of us! nowadays most things shes like: oh, is this a threat? Im not even looking at and then shes like: okay, mommy, lets go on. or, we were passing a meadow behind our property to go on a walk early in the morning and there were three cats runing around. she was like: mommy, i wanna play with them! but i just sad no and went our way. she jumped on one place a few time but she didnt even pull on her leash (~15 meters) and went with me . or anoother time, when she was in a wide area of the leash and we saw some deer: i was like. oh, im gonna have to run after her now, but i just tried and turned myself the other way. she did run, but only like ~ 5 meters an then returned to me. i just love her and the breed so very much. she is such an fantastic animal and i love her stubborness and her will to protect our family. she is truly turning out to be like her namesake. (whoever gets this and comments it will get a cookie^^ thanks forr this great video^^

I just got one yesterday named Oliver Blu ! He is the sweetest but he's most definitely stubborn. He's 9 weeks and the hardest part is getting him to sleep and going to the bathroom. He's doing good! Just had a few mishaps, any potty training tips?
@mellowsadventures8285
@mellowsadventures8285 3 года назад
With potty training keep track of when the dog has an accident, to help prevent accidents take the puppy out after eating, drinking, playing and waking up from a nap. Keeping track of the accidents will help see what times the puppies have accents.

We had issues with my Jorge at first. So I fell back on a method I used with another dog in the past who had some problems catching on. When puppy potties outside puppy gets a treat.....every. single. time they go pee or poo. Treat immediately after. Also with males you should give them a chance to pee more than once when out, they often don't empty the bladder on the first go. Within a day or 2 Jorge had it down pat & we've not had a single accident in 2 months. (he's 5 months)

I would definitely start training the basics and at that age socialize is key. Try socializing the puppy to as many things at home that you can! Just make sure to keep the training session short! Do multiple training sessions a day no more that 3-5 minutes long!

@mellowsadventures8285
@mellowsadventures8285 3 года назад
To help prevent food aggression I would recommend hand feeding for a couple of week. That way the puppy understands that you provide the food. If at any point the you notice that your dog is getting food aggression go back to hand feeding. Also remember to never just take any food or treat away from your dog, instead you want to trade with them. This is super important because if you just take it away they can develop food aggression.

@mellowsadventures8285
@mellowsadventures8285 3 года назад
Hi I love the name! Great Pyrenees are known for wondering due to their natural instincts. So mellow is never off leash because where we live there is a road really close to our house. However I personally like to use long leashes which are just leashes that can be 20-60 foot leashes. I like these leashes because they allow your dog to run around and feel like they are off leash but if something does happen you can easily grab the leash. I think allowing a Great Pyrenees would be possible but it would take a lot of training and you would want to make sure before you let them off leash that they have a solid recall even around distraction! I have a video on my channel called walking my Great Pyrenees it just shows mellow walking on a long leash!

My pup is half GP half Rough Collie. She's 9 months and barks at people? Any suggestions?
@mellowsadventures8285
@mellowsadventures8285 5 месяцев назад
First it would depend on why she is barking at people. Dogs bark at people for different reasons and reading their body language can help you understand why! Is she barking because she is fearful of people? Or is she barking because she really wants to say hi. It’s not uncommon for puppies to go through fear periods. Either way I would recommend doing the look game, you could also do this game with a clicker which might be easier to catch her attention. Basically how the game works is you want to start at a distance away from people you will then tell her to look and when she looks at people without barking then you will click the clicker and give her a treat! Make sure if you have not used a clicker before to condition her to that first. If she is barking at the person then you might be too close so try and start at a distance. You will then continue to repeat this over time you will be able to get super close to people and eventually she will just automatically give you her attention when she sees a person.

They are very intelligent and determined. They bore easily so keep training sessions short. Use great treats (beef sticks, string cheese etc ). If you ask a pyr for something you positively know they know, do not let them ignore you. Follow through no matter how tired or busy you are. If you let a pyr get away with something they will believe that they can do it for ever
@dylankremp1252
@dylankremp1252 Год назад
Strongly second the above comment. As well, socialize your dog with others lots while they are young, and train them not to guard resources too heavily. I have a GP/Collie mix, about 5 years old, and he has just recently had moments of showing aggression and dominance towards other friendly dogs at the dog park if they try to take too much of my attention. Can get serious because they are big and powerful dogs, but he has never inflicted any wounds so far, just very aggressively scared other dogs away.

@@dylankremp1252how do I train them and prevent aggression?
@dylankremp1252
@dylankremp1252 8 месяцев назад
@@medi214 it's a lot harder to do this training after the first year, but it's still possible. It'll likely just take a lot of time. For resource guarding, you can start with toys and try to teach them to leave or drop it and then reward them. Then you can move up gradually to their favorite things, always rewarding with something equal or better when they listen. My GPs favorite thing is a raw bone, and I've had no issues taking one away, even having to reach into his throat to pull one out while he was choking. Use a similar strategy when socializing, and never start socializing in a location they think is their territory. Allow your dog to grow and warn another dog if they feel uncomfortable, but don't let them snap unless it's in a reasonable situation.

Just got a GP! Known him since he was a pup! Was around a lot until I left for college, I decided to get him from a relative. He’s 1 now. I’m training him now, and he’s registered! Ha pretty trained from a relative that trained him. Any tips for a college student taking him to Campus?
@mellowsadventures8285
@mellowsadventures8285 2 года назад
So some tips I would have is 1. Make sure to provide a lot of mental stimulation for your pup, like puzzle games and stuffed kongs this will help with keeping your GP from getting bored. GP don’t need a lot of exercise so I would recommend walking him at least 1 a day to get some energy out. Tip 3 is try and do some socialization trips with him to help get him use to busy environments. For example taking him to a busy park or pet friendly places like Lowe’s to get him use to load noise. 4. When you start college with him I would recommend watching for signs of stress some dogs can get stressed out in certain environment so make sure to watch for signs. If you start to notice signs of stress I would recommend talking with your vet to see what you can do to help calm him. Is he a registered ESA? Quick little piece of information in the United States ESA and SD don’t have to be registered, registration are actually fake all you need is a doctors note! For more information on that you can look up the ADA law surrounding SD and ESA!

Mellow enjoy going on outings! The only livestock I own are chickens and they don’t need protecting as we don’t get a lot of predators. They have a secure area that keeps them safe, plus mellow prefers to be inside with his family!
