We live in Western North Carolina, where there’s a huge population of brown bears. They are just everywhere. Our Livestock Protection Dog, Gracie, protects my spouse from bears like a champ! Gets between her and the bear. Raises up and just…ROARS. This freaks out the bear enough to make it just … leave. Fabulous animal! Love her to bits.

Rescue!!! I am a Great Pyrenees rescuer. These are not designer dogs. They are beautiful, majestic and honorable. They are also stubborn, strong willed and independent. It literally breaks my heart when people get a Pyr and complain about the breed’s natural instinct to be who they are. Then they give up on them. You know what! They would never give up on you! These are Working Class Dogs! So don’t get them because they are pretty, or look like big teddy bears. They have a purpose and when you take it away or refuse to provide it it ruins the bond. I LOVE and advocate for them. So if you can handle what they are all about, respect and rescue. They have been one of the biggest joys of my life and my family’s lives.

How do you think they’d get along with Kangals? I have an opportunity to adopt an 11 month old GP, but I have two 8 yr old male kangals, and one black mouth kur.

The one I am training (for only 48 hours now) fake got wrapped around a shrub in the yard today in order to get me to come down to show him again how to follow the rope back. Once I was down the stairs he ran away smiling to show me he had not only learned "follow the rope back" but that he could fool me with it. I need to figure out what job to give this dog by tomorrow. He has already mastered respect around the humans and eye contact to wait for direction also in less than 2 days.

We got Groot when he was a 13 months old, still acting like a puppy. We live in a townhouse so it’s a good thing he was the runt and only weighs 90 pounds. He doesn’t love baths but the groomer never had a problem nor did we when we wash him outside in the summer. He looks at us like we’re torturing him the whole time. Takes forever to dry. Almost as loving as the Goldens I’ve had and my wife is totally in love with him. Kids in the neighborhood call him snowball and he lets them do almost anything they want. Great dog

my male Brutus was also the runt so he was the last one of his litter. I'm glad he's smaller because he still jumps up on us. But he also has more energy because hes smaller and more agile. He also hates getting in the car and getting groomed.

@@molly2534 I have a Pyrenees lab mix. She always takes a passive role when she's someplace with me and follows my lead, I've never seen her be an agreasor. If she's out on her own in the yard, she will absolutely take care of business if she doesn't think things are right.

There are so many great Pyrs in rescue. They wander off farms and people tend to allow them to wander and not spay or neuter. I highly suggest a rescue. I adopted a 6 year old GP and loved her 6 years. Super sweet, smart and was a great house dog. Mine had not a mean bone in her body. She was not protective either. She loved everyone.
@taft9317
@taft9317 Год назад
The biggest deterrent to adoption through a rescue or a humane society is they require you have a fenced in yard. Totally defeats the purpose of a LGD if they cannot patrol the farm/ranch. Too many people get these dogs and don’t know how to train them or keep them occupied so they dig up the yard, climb over fences, etc because they’re bored.

My GP loves to put her head in my elbow or in between my legs. She is gentle and alert to every thing going on around us. She takes our phones out of our hands or knocks them to the floor. She wants our attention. She will not move out of the way and sleeps where she wants, even the pathway to the bathroom. She comes up to me for massages. She lies on her back, one foot straight out until I massage her all over. Her eyes roll back & her tongue goes out. So funny. She kisses me all over and hugs with her long legs around my neck. She tolerates her baths but not crazy about them. But loves to be brushed. She is unique and I love her dearly. Very protective and herds our 2 kittens from room to room Lol 😊

This is a lot of dog for someone used to labs and similar breeds. Don't be taken in by their beauty. These are serious dogs--proceed with caution.

We currently have 3. Amazing dogs! Must have a large fenced-in yard for these dogs. They need to run and play. You become their flock when they are not being used as working dogs. They will defend their property and family with their lives. Our dogs will not allow anything in the yard. They are kind and loving. When they want attention, the Pyr paw is a weapon! Very stubborn and strong-willed. Can not be off leash at all. They will explore and roam given the chance. And yes, they bark a lot!!! We just love them and have had them for 25 years now. P.S. they love cold, snowy weather!

My hubby and I have adopted five adult Great Pyrenees and would adopt another. Full stop. The Pyr, I wouldn’t call stubborn. However, they are independent “thinkers” and will “decide” when is a good time to listen to you. Protective they are, and yet, if confronted by an intruder (Which happened to our second Pyrenees) grabbed the intruder’s had with her mouth w/o leaving any bite marks. Hairy, barks, great with young children, independent, family mate, loving, friendly. We love this breed. They fit our lifestyle. Being married to an engineer, pragmatic is spot on. We love them…..

I have a Great Pyrenees spayed female named Jessie. I got her from my father in law, who sadly got too ill to care for her anymore. I feel so honored to have her in my life & that he trusted my husband & I to care for her! I was an animal cruelty officer/investigator & a Veterinary surgical tech, so I'm an experienced dog mother. Of all the dogs I've had throughout my life since childhood, Jessie stands apart. Such a sweetheart & so goofy when she wants to be. She also has an almost regal bearing & dignity about her that is beautiful to see. She guards my remotely located, rural Longhorn cattle and chicken farm and does a fantastic job keeping coyotes, wolves & bobcats off the property. Thanks for sharing your Pyr furbaby with us!

Called a Pry Paw. I’ve gotten mine down to one scratch. But I get up to see what she wants. She has never had a bath in her five years. No odor, no skin issues. Rake daily. Smarter than most humans. She listens to sentences and obeys. Back up. …good for an 80 year old. She has always walked behind me so not a tripping hazard. Bring to mommy… she will go to another room and bring me the item she carried off. We trade for a treat. She also has a door bell, not jingle bells. From Amazon She rings it to come in at daylight after a night of warning the coyotes to stay away. Makes sure I never miss beautiful sunrise. Always speak softly and NEVER yell or hit! Keep their spirit happy and be rewarded one thousand times over. Rescues are full because people don’t do homework and fall for fluff ball that grows up to an opinionated 100 pound guard dog with brains. The good rescues will match the dog to your home.

that is a lot mismatched instincts... you never know which traits are going to be dominant, nor do you know if there may be conflicting traits in the future. i am sure she is great with kids and LOVES her family with her life, but one half is a herder while the other is roam-with-the-pack-all-the-time. the way they manage their "packs" (flocks) are polar opposites. i have heard that shepherds of all types often see their family as something to keep together as much as possible so they can see everyone at all times and they can become stressed in the mornings when everyone goes their separate ways out the door. i had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever/German Shepherd mix when i was a kid and the only time he would truly relax (sleep with both eyes closed & snore) was when my whole family was sitting at the table for dinner... when he could see all of us at once, the cat included. when my sister went away for college, it almost broke his spirit. thankfully, i got my driver's license a few months later and he & i started going on adventures. he actually learned the word "adventure" (my mom started calling our outings that and it stuck) and, if he weren't so barrel-chested, he would have done backflips when anyone said it, even on tv.

But loves to go on long walks. Mainly just likes to be with me and likes car rides. But will. Not tolarate strangers inside the house. But loves people in general.

I didn’t know much about raising dogs because my Pyrenees is my first dog. But I noticed mine being resistant to certain things like baths and being in the crate, so I just forced her to do both things frequently in the first few months of her life. My Pyrenees now loves bath time because she knows being dried off with a towel comes after which is her favorite, and she likes the crate too!

We currently have 2 Pyrenees (lost our oldest 2 yrs ago) They are an amazing breed. Our oldest was never a barker but our middle one is. They are very protective over us and our children and grandchildren. They use their size and huge bark to be intimidating but overall are gentle and very loving. The pyr paw is a common thing. It cute as pups but sure can hurt as they grow. LOL 😆 We do not live on a farm so our pyrs are simply house dogs. Oh...all of ours hate baths/water. LOL

We have a female 10 month old Great Pyrenees. We live on an acre and have 4 kids from 8 to 1 years old. She actually does really well with the baby (we put a huge amount of our training energy into making sure of that). But boy she has everything your boy has. Stubborn and sleepy and sweet. Check on being a touch clumsy in running into people and things. Check on the giant paws. Check on the barking. Check on the head between the legs. Such a funny bread. Beautiful, huge, and so soft! She’s our resident polar bear.

Those are also DOUBLE dew claws, and they make awesome snow shoes. We have lived with 2 Pyrs. My only warning is, they're happiest with some space to guard, and in a home with at least one other dog. Goats or sheep or alpacas will do too. Our next dog will be a Pyr. Maybe 2. They are such cool dogs, you won't even mind having to clean the slobber off your guitars regularly. Our last Pyr's pack was a Swissy and a black toy poodle. That was hilarious.

For anyone who needs a service dog- this breed is excellent for ptsd bc they are extremely aware of their surroundings as livestock guardian dogs. I’m a disabled veteran. Sugar basically trained herself. She alerts me to everything out of the ordinary. I am also hearing impaired and have a smaller dog specifically for that disability (my last ptsd dog passed away last September). When Sugar alerts me I take a look around to see what she has alerted me too. I reward the behavior. I thank her for the alert. I wait out the issue or I say “release” and we “walk on”. She has been an absolute life saver. My smaller service dog Sophie has recently become blind in one eye after being attacked at puppy daycare so Sugar’s job is now taking care of both of us and she definitely seems to know this. I cannot say enough good things about this breed even tho mine is a Maremma/great pyr cross.

Not super trainable (they also have Border Collies for herding cows and as just regular pets, so they know a lot about training, it’s not for a lack of trying 😅), but I’ve found Petey the Pyrenees doesn’t need a lot of training, he’s naturally such a calm and good natured dog.
@marshajones6819
@marshajones6819 2 года назад
They are very trainable, i thought at first when I got her about 3 months after I had her, that she was so stubborn , but reading and learning. They are not stubborn, they have to learn what you want then to do because they know what to do. I just got one and it is the best dog I have every had. I have read a lot and learned a lot and I'm still learning. I have a friend that has them, and she has helped me a lot. I was reading it can take up to two years to learn what you want then to do because they are very smart and they know what to do. I have learned from a friend if they are getting out they sense danger somewhere close. So they get out and walk the area until to make sure it is safe. She said her dog would get out everyday, all her neighbors that saw him would calm and say he's out again, she they learned has to get out walk the entire neighborhood then he comes back and he will not get out the rest of the day. Their neighbors don't call them anymore. Mine can chew a leash in 10 seconds and be gone. She goes directly to the fence line and watch's. This video was very accurate about how they are. I know all dogs are not the same. I have learned to do a-lot if research, ask other people that have them. It take a lot of work to learn then. I would say that they are not a good dog just to leave outside if you want it for a pet. Mine wants a lot of attention. Mine does but bark a lot at all. We live in the city so maybe there's nothing if danger in sour neighborhood. When got yo ranches, I have noticed she does bark if she sees something. She's only 8 months. She saw coyotes and ran fast to get us out of the area, but kept her eyes looking at me, looked back twice and ran faster. A smaller boy was behind me running and right before we got back to our camper she came from behind him to make sure he was there. She went straight to my husband because I think she senses that he protect us and being the head of the house. If he's around we go boat out friends camper she will not walk in between any campers she set in the outside of the campers and she will not leave unless he is with her. I am buying a GPS to put on her because we go to a lot of dirt bike races on ranches. She's the happiest dog when we do. She does not even want to come in the camper she wants to stay outside, probably to try to escape and go to the fence line. 😂 When she was only 12 weeks old, this is when we got her, they were working and she got spooked by a loud noise when they were working on the ranch. She ducked her head, pulled out of the collar, and her body was as low as she could get it and she was gone, very fast. I'm not trying to be rude or mean. I actually thought she was very stubborn and was not going to listen so when I stared reading, watching videos and help from a friends. I've realized how to work and understand her. My son does yet, I tell him you can't make her do things you have to teacher her. He wants her to stay in his room and night and she wants to stay outside and he get upset but she won't do it. She will come in in the mornings and sleep with him. I tell him that's what they do and they know what the need to do. It's been a learning experience for me. I can say it's the best dog I've ever had my entire life. It will probably be the only breed if dogs I'll every get again. She is so loves me and loves so much.

I've owned GPs for many years. I love that they are independent. They will take in all the details and make a decision on how they will deal with a situation. They NEED a herd to guard, it's what they were bred to do. If you don't have animals for them to guard, they will make YOU their herd. They possess a great instinct for people. When a stranger comes around they check him out. If the stranger is trustworthy the dogs will move back but if they see him as a threat, they will move between us and keep the stranger from getting close to me. I love that!

I've been blessed with a female Pyrenees and her name is Lady. I watched your video and want you to know I do not experience the problems you describe, except for the barking and that I encourage, because I have enough property to where neighbors don't complain about the consistent barking, which I personally enjoy. I also speak to Lady in plain English and always show her utmost respect. If I want her to move and she's blocking my way, I simply say "excuse me" and she'll immediately stand or move aside, permitting me to pass. I guess, when it comes to Lady, I've thrown my ego out the window and always show her total respect and she appreciates that. In all honesty, I can't say I've ever had a problem with Lady and know without question she loves me and I return that love with all my heart and I consider her a blessing and thank God for her daily.

BEST DOG EVER. We have had ours for a little more than a year. Such a calm dog. We love her smile when she first sees us afer a short break. The other thing we found funny was when we took her for a car ride and first time through a drive thru. The girl at the window wanted to give our dog a treat, of course we said yes. Our Bella slowly sniffed the treat and refused to take it from her. We called it the "stranger danger" effect. Also at the dog park, likes to go to the small dog / quiet area. We get a few funny looks their first. She plays hard with our other dogs in our yard, but again "stranger danger". We are thinking of breeding her, just figuring out our logistics. Again, best dog ever.

Thanks for the informative video, just got a Great Pyrenees myself and looking to increase my knowledge as much as possible to ensure training goes well. He is already incredibly affectionate, and showing his intelligence with his stubbornness, which I try to see the funny side as not to get frustrated! First couple of days he was pretty quiet, but that has already changed! All in all he is a fantastic little guy and really look forward to him growing up and learning alongside him.

Really enjoyed your video - spot on with Great Pyrs' personality and characteristics. We have a rescued Golden Pyrs but his personality comes from the Great Pyrs side - stubborn, independent and protective. The Golden side keeps him small - he's about 80 lbs (if you can call that "small"). Great family dog, loves people especially kids. We adore our Golden Pyrs.

I’ve never watched y’all before but I was here for the dog (I’m sure I’ll be back!) you described our GP Georgia perfectly. We also have a Leonberger male. They are both super smart & stubborn. They don’t like baths but love to play with hose or jump in the stock tank. Azzy is beautiful! Thanks for sharing such a good video. Giant breeds aren’t for everyone but they are wonderful dogs.

We have Pyrs 10 years old the sweetest dog loves to snuggle when I sit on the floor to read or watch TV. We have a running joke in our home that our dog (his name is Benny also) that he barks when a leaf falls of a tree. He has the sweetest personality loves to snuggle. Wouldn't trade him for another dog, dog bread. Our dog does like his baths. Also Benny is an inside dog. I do walk him 2 times a day, approx 1/2 mile each time.

We have a 15 months male great pyrenees. We have him more inside than outside. We live in Ottawa, Canada and he loves the snow and ourselves to death. Water is not his best friend but we willl try to hose him off in the spring and summer. He is our big furry baby. He is definitely the best protector. And yes, our doors are all scratched.

Baths have to talk and communicate at pretty much the same time together. Do them often if with the hose even when it's only to spray them off to cool them without soap. Got all 3 to accept hose baths. Then once done do the towel dry in a manner or way that they enjoy. It's a reward for them. Every dog loves a towel dry that's lots of rubbing and playful 😁

I am convinced that my dog is a Pyr/Anatolian shepherd mix, I adopted him from a rescue at 8 weeks old. I was originally told he was a Newf/Husky/GSD mix, but it doesnt make sense; he has no personality or physical similarities. His personality is so much like your description! He looks like all of the Pyr/Anatolian mixes I see online. He's also very "pawsy". I am definitely going to do a DNA test.

I adopted a collie chow mix, Joan Jett. Her mane saved her life. We went on a walk and another dog attacked her. Grabbed my dogs neck and shook her. Went straight to vet. 2 puncture wounds but not very deep. The vet told me that her mane saved her from a deeper puncture wound that could have caused her to bleed to death. Azlan is a beautiful dog. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Same thing with my Keeshond; attacked by a Pit Bull who snapped at his neck... missed the skin because the Pittie thought the large perimeter of the ruff WAS the neck. Pittie got hair in mouth and I had time to get my dog out of the way.

Pyrs are leaners and pawers. Their paws absolutely can give you a black eye, take a man down with a awkwardly placed paw. 😂 If you aren’t ready, their leans can bowl you over if you aren’t prepared. But it is out of love. They are so smart and they are used to being in charge and primary guardian so they need to know you can be trusted to care for yourself and them as well, this helps them to listen to you… a little! They are truly one of the most unique and wonderful breeds I have ever encountered. Just the type of love and companionship they give you is different than others I have encountered. I know so many that are excellent therapy dogs visiting hospitals, their size and their calm nature makes them easy to pet from hospital beds and how can you not smile at that face?! Also, most of my Pyrs have had a “soulful” look. I joke it is because they feel bad for us that they are so much smarter than we are and we just have no idea. Poor humans. 😜

They definitely aren't for the weak! I adopted mine from the SPCA, and my jaw just dropped when i saw her real size in person. They lied and said she was the same size as a golden retriever lol it took a lot of patience, but after a few years i finally got the hang of dealing with her. They are great for families due to being so gentle and protective, and require daily brushings and exercise. And i mean it when they arent for the weak because they bark. Alot. They bark just to hear their bark. And they will bark all night. So, yeah. I had to get some good noise cancelling earbuds just to get some sleep, and eventually that led to getting a pair for the whole family. Still, she's been the best dog i ever owned and tbh I'd get another one when ours inevitably crosses rainbow bridge.

My Pyr loves water! A few things I made sure to get my puppy used to very early on: brushing, bath and blow dryer. I got my Pyr as a baby, right on his 1st day I gave him a bath (he came from a hobby farm, and was dirty as a good ol' farm boy). Being a former Lab mom, taking the dog to swim while camping was part of our fun times. It was important to me to get him to like water, As soon as he had all his shots we took him camping and when it was all quiet on his 1st early morning I took him to the pond and played with him on the sand. Soon enough, after a little bit of investigation, he was splashing his paws in the shallow water. Didn't take long and he was swimming a little bit. By far not gracious as a Labrador, he is not built for that afterall, but enough to cool off on warmer days, and swim to safety if needed. Although I don't bath him often, he has no issues or tries to run away. Now when we go camping, as soon as I get him off the leash, he takes off to soak in the pond.

This is so interesting! We have a female great pyrenees mix who just hit 102lbs at 2 1/2 years old. She's a barker who paws at everything and everyone. The biggest difference is that she LOVES water. Baths are a little different because she doesn't like going into water under someone else's terms, but put a little pool outside or turn the sprinklers on and she's obsessed. She's definitely scratched up some doors and knocked out window screens (last week she broke one of the fence boards by jumping at it lol), and she has that same dopey personality for sure!!

We got our Pyr (Elsa) when my twins were 2 months old. She was AMAZING with our kids. We do live in a neighborhood and we did have to get a vibrating (not a shock collar…just a low frequency vibration) collar for her, which worked really well and I didn’t feel was cruel. Even though barking is in her nature, she also learned to be a good neighbor. She shed a TON, but she was also mixed with something…our best guess was lab. She only got baths at the groomer, because we knew we weren’t equipped to deal with a bath with so stubborn a dog. 😂. She liked to chew, but we used that as incentive to get our older kids to keep their toys picked up when they were done playing with them. We lost our Elsa to bloat two years ago and miss her very much.

Thank you so much for informing everyone of the breed! A lot of times people get puppies or dogs because they are cute. They don't research the breed and have no idea what comes along with the breed! Which is why the puppies out grow the puppy stage then the dog ends up at the shelter or being neglected on a chain. Thank you again! Great information! Please do your research on any animal you plan on adding to the family! I do volunteer at a rescue so I know these awful things happen unfortunately

Poor guy may end up having a time figuring out if he is a livestock guard or a herder! It's 100% true they are stubborn and don't want to do what YOU want them to do! Drove me crazy at first! and yep they love sleeping all day and in places you may have to work around. A man trie to sneak up behind me in the dark while walking her for her last potty break of the night. 2 warning barks and then on 3rd bark , she whirled around behind me and lunged at the man. She kept in at bay and would not let him get any closer. She meant business. Love Pyrennes. Your remarks are spot on with this breed.

We have a female Great Pyr named Belle. She is a year and a half and has always loved ❤️ water!! Loves baths, being sprayed, playing in mud. Agreed about not shaving. It's also neat how their coats work. Even when they get super dirty from being outside in time they are white again and the mud and dirt just shake off. We have 7, soon to be 8 children and she's great with them. But yes she doesn't know her own size and has been known to plow younger ones over. The barking is real and the digging 😳. We live on a acre in a township in the city. We have great neighbors who don't mind the barking and tons of neighbor kids that come around and play in our backyard. She's done decent with her training and stays within her in ground electric fence. We love our polar bear!!
