Ground soil sets up like concrete. Uhg! Water runs through channels and the plants seem to get little water. Sparse, weak leaves, almost skeletal and dingy flowers. I've learned my lesson.

I’d definitely watch that one! I think with everyone doing more gardening now due to the public health issues we’ve been having, it’s been hard to find potting soil! I started out the season with my favorite kind, but now some stores are out of potting soil and I just have to get what’s left anywhere I can get it.

@@annemelon5283 How do you know Kimberly Barker did not start her plants from seed? Exactly! You do not know! Her comment was pertaining to budworms eating her plants and what to do about it. It had absolutely nothing to do with how the plants actually got their start, or whom started them! Even though this specific video that teaches about watering and has nothing to do with teaching you how to start a plant from seed, Kimberly could have already shown him how to start plants from seed, you don't know! If she hasn't, Laura has a great video on this very channel that teaches you how to start from seed!! I am sure there is more than one!!! Her comment is not weird at all!!! In fact it is your comment that has an issue!!! No it is not weird, it just shows how you are a straight forward SMARTASS!!!!!!! You do NOT have a clue how educated Kimberly is on gardening. If she isn't well educated, as I am not, she too can learn so much as I do from the great video content that Laura on thus channel "Garden Answers" puts out daily!!!! Laura is highly educated in gardening!! If you don't believe that either then maybe you should watch another channel or just teach yourself, considering you are such the genius at gardening!!!!!!!!

I occasionally will buy a 6 pack & bump them up to quarts to get more roots before I plant them. Only if what I want isn't available in a larger size. Usually, only the cheapest plants are grown in 6 packs as the "plugs" (tiny plants provided to growers) can have a large price difference.
@PK-bh1ww
@PK-bh1ww 4 года назад
Lobelia isn't a sun lover. It tends to like the cooler weather. Watering is tricky with them too. I buy them often but this might be my last year. Or I'll put them in more shade. They're so pretty tho so hard to pass up. And I deadhead them by running my fingers through them. And they'll re bloom. But generally by mid Aug. they're toast.

I found that a mix of soil from the garden with new soil (1:2 to 1:3) works really well with tomatoes. The soil from the garden locks up water nicely, but with a majority of new pot soil, it still is airy. At least it has worked for me now :)

Unfortunately, 3 out of my 4 concrete containers (that I've had for 20 years!!! How did the ancient civilizations manage to make their last from then til now-and going & going....?!?!) decided they were done & pretty much crumbled to smithereens! A friend gave me a couple of faux whiskey barrels that I still haven't planted anything still but hoping to still make it in time for a lush end-of-fall showing. You inspire me all the time. Most of the time I cant afford the good potting soil, and i really cant afford concrete pieces, BUT when i can afford the good potting soil, i can really see a difference. I planted 2 dahlia tubers, bought the same place, same variety, same pot, same everything, except i ran out of the good soil so in 1 i used the cheap stuff, and the difference is insane. Much faster, bigger and healthier growth on the good one. I always felt stupid paying a lot of money for dirt, but i really always buy the good stuff when i can.
@soysan34
@soysan34 4 года назад
Think of in a different prospective, one is garden soil (dirt) and other is potting mix (soil), once I started to think of it like that it was easier to justify it since the are 2 completely different things. I buy them in 4-1 ratio and mix. Since I am not always available for consistent watering. So buying in that rationale I am ( in my mind, at least) buying the "moisture control" soil at a lower cost. The 4-1 mix I make depends also what container or plants I use. I have seen a huge difference not only in cost but how often I need to water. Next yr I plan to make my own to get cost down further, since I am a "frost watcher"!! Big box stores such as Lowes in my zone 5 get a huge amounts of plants in way too early, so they haven't the space to keep them protected and they get hit by frost! So it's time for me to adjust my schedule and squeeze in a trip to store every 2 -3 days as they put the damaged plants on clearance rack, yippie :-) !!! I literally save hundreds and hundreds not only on annuals, but like at this time of summer (mid-July) they are pushing perennials out on to clearance racks! So all the money I save on my clearance plants is also allowing me to justify spending a few extra bucks on good potting mix. Another way to save, is save last year's soil and fill the bottoms of this yrs pots, along with whatever you have handy like cut up pool noodles, empty crushed up pots (and inverted pots) the plant comes in, or vary large cleaned rocks. That empty space at bottom of larger containers are now filled with something much cheaper, hope that helps! Oh one other thing is save on pots! I buy my pots at garage/estate sales, also I pick them up roadside during village clean up days, WOW the money I save there is extraordinary!!! The only investment I have there is soap, water, disinfectant! Pots are crazy expensive, they make potting soil look cheap! I know they all might not match, but some light sanding and some primer (dont skip this part!) and your color choices of spray paint and like magic, they all match! Just dont hit the spray painted surface with strong water spray (it will chip if you do, trust me I know :-○)

How does it look now and will you move Benjamin or move the little baby things? • Have you already recieved baby stuff from followers and do you still have loads of things from the last time? • What do you think the gender will be? If it's a gril do you want to deck her out in pink or rather universal colours? • Would you consider doing updates on your belly? Amen to the $3 compared to the $5. I tried the wave petunias in the front of my house and it has been trying. I will definitely spend the extra 💰 for Proven winners. I did some PW petunias in back of my house and it was worth it for sure. I was just trying it out in front to see if petunias would do well since my front yard only gets a couple hours of sun. Trial complete, plenty of sun and come on PW petunias next year! Something to look forward to - planning started. 😊 And change to concrete or aqua pots 😉. Love the color explosion.

I want to set up drip to at least 8 distinct areas on my 1.5 acre property. I've given it a lot of thought but am afraid to initiate. One of my concerns is where to stop a line (sidewalks, driveways) and when you start a new line (how long is too long?) My husband has his own set of concerns including blowing the lines for our cold WI weather and how long does a system last. We noticed you are changing yours to tape and a different style of drip (grid). I REALLY need a good informative tutorial.
@gardengatesopen
@gardengatesopen 4 года назад
Hey yeah! Speaking of drip systems... Aaron - I also need a good starter tutorial with AT LEAST 3 different zones in one garden bed. If you're wondering what kinds of things your viewers need advice on - I'll try to lay out what I need to know. Maybe others need this same kind of info? This may turn into kind of a long comment... Here goes: The garden lives in North Texas, the Dallas area, just to give you an idea of how hot it gets during the hottest part of the Summers, and in early Fall, it will be 100° and higher. Ok - Basically there are 3 different types of plants, according to their watering needs. 1.) Some need watering every day. 2.) Some need watering once a week. (We've planted lots of Xeriscape plants) 3.) Some ONLY need water if it hasn't rained in a month. All the plants are planted in the same bed. But I will be able to run drip line to each separately. I am thinking of running drip tape to the plants that need the most water, to create a soaker type of situation, for deep watering to those plants. Except I'm a bit torn about that. I'm not sure if I should simply run a grid of the 1/4" drip tube around each root ball instead? But the BIG reason I need informed instruction is bcuz I will be doing this at someone else's house! Yikes!!! AND I live 200 miles away!!! DOUBLE YIKES!!! I will stay there for the first 2 weeks to get it set up, and then watch it those next 10 days. Bcuz yes, it may take me 3-4 days to set up the drip system!! Too bad I cannot get things done as quickly as y'all can! I'm always envious at how much you both get done in just one day! Anyway - Obviously, I will not be able to run over to their house every day, or even every week, to make sure everything is going as expected! And the home owners are not the DIY type, so they probably aren't going to jimmy with it, especially bcuz they never have 2 days off work in a row... I CAN go up there every so often... But that's enough of that tangent! The next thing I need advice on is this part: They DO already have an automatic watering set up with sprinklers to the lawn. They told me there are a few different zones. And I saw there is currently an overhead sprinkler in the garden bed. However, this is not a good way for most of the garden plants to receive their water, as you already know. I have heard there is a way to change a sprinkler head to a drip system connection, but have no idea how to do that. I'm thinking I can do this change-out, and use that as one of my zones. Then I would only need to install a separate configuration for the other 2 zones. I don't know if that is a good idea, or if I should simply do the entire bed separately, and just put a stopper in that one overhead sprinkler. So that's my situation. Except that I've never done a drip irrigation system before! (No pressure tho!) My point is - I really need to get this right those 1st 2 weeks! So - if I know what problems to expect, THAT is going to make a BIG difference in the outcome! And also, this COULD BE a project that may label me for the next 20 or so Christmas gatherings to come! As in: "Remember the time Jeri (that's me) tried to install drip irrigation to our garden?!! Hahahaha!!" (Again, No pressure!!!) RISKY - RIGHT!!! I know!!!!!!!!! But it is for family. And the adults who live there are hard working people who absolutely NEED, and WANT a pretty garden to look at. It helps de-stress them after a hard days work. They have an annual pass to the Dallas Arboretum, and during normal times, this is their once a week de-stressing actuvity. They just don't have the time to do the watering maintenance. (But I HAVE talked them into feeding their plants, by hand, w liquid fertilizer twice a month! So THAT'S a big win right there!! Whoooohoooooo!!!) But really, they NEED a drip system. We cannot afford to employ a company to do the installation. All the money for the project will be going into the materials. Probably about $150. to $200. max, for the whole project. So it's all up to me! So Aaron! PLEASE HELP US!!! I have been admiring your drip system skills for a loooong time! I've followed your learning, and experience. I totally trust your judgement. So ANY advice you have definitely soaks in! (See how I made a watering joke there!) Oh - one more thing - I won't be able to afford a $200. high tech, use-the-cell-phone-drip system, like you guys have. Altho, that will be the future goal. But a LONG WAY into the future. I realize this is where a lot of your experience lies, so all your advice w that system WILL BE taken. BUT - if you also have ANY advice on a spigot-end timer, brand, or type, that would be extra nice for us too. Sorry this was so long, but Thank You for all your tine and effort! ♡♡♡ Keep up the good work!!!! ♡♡♡♡♡♡

Hey! Love your videos as usual!!! July garden tour PLEASE! Its actually SUPER helpful to see what’s still blooming in the dog days of summer, and what’s not. I feel like through the years I’ve watched your Iceberg roses go and go and go! Is that true? Just a walk through tour on your highlights channel without any commentary would totally hit the spot!!! Anything!

I am now a believer in Espoma Bio-Tone Starter Plus! I potted about a dozen containers, then decided about 2 weeks later to plant the plants into the ground. Bio-Tone was used in all containers but one, which I simply forgot and chose not to re-do at the time. When planting into the ground, the Bio-Tone pots were full of healthy new roots, but the one with no Bio-Tone still had it's original rootball and not much else. It was PHENOMENAL. I will ALWAYS use Espoma Bio-Tone Starter Plus in the future, with everything.

These stunning containers remind me of our recent trip to Mackinac Island. The color variation is just gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your trip last fall with us, so I could go see this for myself. How completely glorius! Will you be visiting again, and have you ever taken your mom there?

We have a lot of shady areas in our garden and in past years i spent a lot of money on coleus, impatiens and begonias. Last year I planted a few caladiums too. You got a lot later in the year and that kinda reinforced my interest. I found that the caladiums flourished in both sun and shade and were not bothered by slugs and snails like coleus or the fungal blights that keep hitting impatiens and begonias in our area. So this year, I limited the number of coleus, impatiens and begonias I bought and spent most of my budget on bare root caladiums. It took a frustrating 6 to 7 weeks for them to really flush out, but now that they have, WOW, they look great. I had purchased several lots of mixed varieties and then two lots of Red Flash. The only complaint I have is that i probably planted too many Red Flash in each container, since they are really big and vigorous and because I did not know what each of the roots from the mixed varieties were, I wound up with some containers with an unbalanced number of one variety or another. I had to dig up and move some around to get the right mixture of colors. I really like that there is no deadheading or even pruning needed. I will lift and store them in the fall, putting each color variety in a separate bag (so i know which one is which) and replant them next spring and maybe look for other varieties.

Those cannas!!! The color is insane. Also, how on earth do your nasturtiums look so great?? I struggle with them so much. Maybe because I'm 7a in Oklahoma and its more humid?

Interesting that you think the humidity would be a problem, i thought nasturtiums love humidity. They are pests of waterways, they just love a damp environment.
