I have a ton of hours in this game on looper. All of these tips were either stuff I learned incredibly late, or were still new to me now. Excellent video, look forward to seeing more.
@@beyourselfth I would sday its focus is not to be scary, no. Its can of course have some moments that are a bit scary, depending on how you play (like if for example you are outside wandering outside during an arora event and a wolf attacks you). But that can largly be avoided depending on how you play.
@@beyourselfth yea this game is great its not supposed to be scary at all only thinks i think would be scary are getting attacked by a wolf in the aurora or in pitch black but this can be avoided.
" _Just 15 sticks and five pieces of cloth can save a life...could it be YOURS? Sneak past a hungry wolf-pack to reach your nearest Aurora-powered phone, and call today for our special, frostbitten-fingers-saved-or-your-sticks-back, no hassle guarantee!_ " ☻
The bedroll trick is absolute genius- I obviously realized you could see the outlines of furniture in it, but I never thought to use that to get around inside. An uncomfortable amount of my lantern oil, fire-making materials, and TIME have been wasted just moving around and finding stuff in my bases at night. Literally just saved me so many matches 😅
Other tactic to scare wolves: if you don't have a torch/bengal, or a weapon like the revolver, use a rock as a last resort. A head-shot with a rock also scares them.
It's actually a lot more than a last resort. Using a rock is actually better than a revolver for self defense. Using a revolver on a charging wolf won't scare it so you need two shots to secure the kill. However a single rock hitting the wolf on the head (a fairly easy task mid charge) will always scare a wolf long enough to break the charge. It doesn't last long enough to break agro entirely but it's more than enough to break a struggle.
About sprinting at wolves. I wait a bit until they stop and start growling at me. And then I don't run at them all the way. All I need is a short movement. I sprint less than a meter forward and it has always worked so far if I'm not encumbered or with sprains. This also reduces a risk of getting into a struggle.
Good point. You can also toss the lit torch or flare in front of the wolf, and it'll have much the same effect, with even less risk of getting charged and will also work on demoralizing timberwolves. Though with those your best bet is a marine flare as the normal flares have a very small AOE compared to marine flares and reduce their morale from the toss method then the marine flares do. If you are up against timberwolves, be aware that throwing the flare disarms yourself and other timberwolves may take advantage, also be aware that if you run or walk directly at a timberwolf and it does not get scared (ie by a lit flare/marine flare) then you can get into a full wolf struggle with a timberwolf. Those are tougher then a struggle with a normal wolf, but if you win, can knock down the pack's morale by as much as nearly half. But you may have taken bleeding wounds or sprains and lost a lot of your own cnd too, so may be left more vulnerable to the rest of the pack if their morale didn't break after that sruggle.
Use any weapon (even a stone will do) to scare the wolves away. When you are holding a lit torch just approach a wolf then hit a weapon draw button. Your character will drop a torch on the ground and draw a weapon. Aiming weapon at wolf while having a lit torch on the ground will scare wolf away. No chance of getting into fight.
@@leeharveyoslik The same also works for lit flares, marine flares and campfires. Just be careful of aurora wolves, they can sometimes ignore fear and attack anyways. I've had them charge when you'd never expect it normally.
Sprinting method is a bit faster (doesn't make much difference, but it's perfect if you have low patience). And on top of that, it's really satisfying to intimidate a wolf like that. By the way. Yesterday I tried this without realizing I'm encumbered. Obviously it didn't work but because I only did a very short sprint, it didn't get me into a struggle either.
I'm still fairly new at this game, but on Stalker I've always just waited for the wolf to stop because of the torch, then walked (not sprinted) towards it until it yelps. So far the wolf has never failed to turn and run away. Every other tip has always resulted in the wolf picking a random direction to flee, which has got me mauled a few times when it came towards me!
A thing or tip I often use is then you are in a dark room, take your stormlatern and only let the ignitionanimation play, not completing it. You can use the 2 bright "sparks" from the latern to see there you are in the room. I often use it when I'm low on lampfuel
I’d be carful about restarting the quartering or harvesting just like with chopping wood it automatically takes the % down of your blade. For example 4 one hour harvests take 4 times as much wear and tear as just one 4 hour interval to get it all done in one go but these are great tips !
Master level knowledge 😎 Also you can also shelter your campfire by standing in front of it to protect it from the wind... No need to lose 20 minutes left from boiling your water or harvesting that last bit of meat from a carcass when the wind picks up in the middle of your harvest.
6.5k Hours ingame but the Flaregun trick was new to me. :) Thx A Tip of mine: When harvesting a bear with for example 32.6 Kg go up to harvest 32.5 Kg and then go back to 0.01 Kg. So you can harvest 100g pieces over and over. With this method you have maximum time control and you are able to boost your cooking skill superquick. It took a lot of wood but i have managed to lvl.5 at day 5. Works best at the HydroDamm Another Tip .. if you are at lvl.5 cooking you can eat everything except raw meat. Still the 0% Food can be eaten by leftclick and Enter. TLD is the best survival ever.!!
That bedroll navigation trick is genius. The most annoyed I ever am in this game is being stuck in a dark interior because I don’t want to use my matches.
I usually watch these tip videos mostly to giggle to myself when I happen to know them all, but this was surprisingly insightful. From the 10 of these I really knew about 2 and kind of guestimated maybe 3 more. Funnily enough the torch charge I figured by a complete accident when I got once fed up with being assaulted by about 6 of them in the muskeg, so I just charged them while yelling IRL in my seat like a madman. and upon attempting to science it has a chance of working even against a bear! Though out of 40 or so attempts it worked 3 times, so I would never recommend doing it on purpose, more like desperate ditch effort when you are about to die.
Not sure if you're covered this previously but you can also consistently scare wolves off by dropping a torch between you and the wolf and aiming a stone at them. They will run away every time.
Yes, this is covered in all my walkthroughs and in my wolf tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8VZi981Hymg.html Thank you, though! The tip included in this video is the rarest scare tactic, so I didnt mention the others :)
Dude I literally watched it with attitude like "eh surely it's nothing that I don't know another *use a torch to start a fire not a match* but just wanna hear a bit more of that Zak's relaxing voicelines" but that have a plenty surprisingly useful one's like the one about windprot carcasses (shame that I never payed attention) , the one with a torch even tho it kinda like bug , pretty same as cooking small meat abuse. Speaking of jerrycans donno why is it really useful cos cooking fish gives you new pack of fuel for lanterns anyways soooo why someone even need the cans ? And about quartering actually is it not makes your tool lose more % while stop-start-stop-start ? Even if so it could be useful anyways but I should test it tho now
Thank you! Jerry Cans weigh less than the packs you get, but have little purpose beyond it. On my long runs I refill them just to make refilling lanterns easier upon returning to the base. Quartering may result in more %tool use, but can also result in more leveling up up the harvesting skill. It can be useful when the kill happened in the open, so you can move the stuff elsewhere.
The flare run thing works best if you run close but not directly at them. Hell, you don't even need to run. If there are loads of wolves around pop a flare and just walk to where ever you need to go. They always get spooked, no need to run at them because their fear might be delayed and they'll attack before you can startle them.
That's a good tip, and detail. Stopping when looting. over hours of IRL gameplay it matters a lot! all such things, in a survival game as unforgiving as this, can save you a lot of resources.
4:52 “wait out that blizzard by messing with your clothes” 😂 I didn’t know this. I would do things like break down useless crates or tables and harvesting curtains.
One thing I didn't pick up from this before is that quartering can be paused and resumed with progress saved. I normally don't bother with quartering as I keep thinking you have to do it in 1 continuous 2 hour grind and rarely can afford to remain exposed for 2 hours nonstop under the custom settings I play by.
make wolves follow you, and bring him to a deer, crouch and if you are far enouggh the wolf will chase the deer, then just scare him by rising a stone (no need to throw it)
Cabin fever is a dumb mechanic imo, like "Oh boi there's a heavy blizzard and wolves outside so i shouldn't go out there...........but i'm getting kinda bored indoor~" Ps:I think we should have an option to hang the storm lantern on our body to use other tools while having a light
Wow, I've been playing TLD for years and every single one of these was new to me. My longest running world is a 430+ day Interloper world and some of these might help me get to the big 5-0-0!
Dang, I had already found out about most of these insights on my own and only two of these tips were new to me - but the longest I survived was for sixty-one days. Kinda ironic
Actually realized a lot of these while playing the game but never knew these tips would actually work. Ah also, I tried reloading my flare gun as soon as I launched a flare but it somehow still reloads slowly
My best tip is to always keep coal in your inventory. It's the only thing that can get a fire hot enough to warm you up in the coldest weather, and each lump burns for an hour.
Also if you have a bunch of half filled oil bottles I wait until I get extra lanterns then I DROP all of my "full" oil bottles (.50) and then take all of my partially filled and refuel my lanterns. afterwards I harvest the lanterns (not my main one) and all of the oil will return to bottle form BUT now it will be 2 .50 (full) bottles per each full lantern thats harvested. Just to answer a future question some might have I drop the full ones prior to filling the lanterns because if you don't they will pull the oil from ANY bottle so you could end up having even more partial bottles than you started with lol.
I've got over 500 hours in, and man there is so much good info in here! Never knew that about quartering or the waterfall, good stuff mate! Subscribed!
The Tips i did not know was Tip numbers 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,10. Its shocking to say i have been playing this game on and off. But some tips are PC and I'm on Xbox 1. Still shocking for me. Thanks for the Tips dude, please keep them coming. 👌👍
Very informative as always! Also some of your RU-vid viewers ended up in Wonz’s stream today, so next time you’re there remind me to give you a referral bonus 😂
Wow. The waterfall and Jerry can tips are incredible! That stamina one while looting too! My tip to help with aim is the long trusted put a little bit of blue tack on the screen over the target
I've got a 220 day(+) Pilgrim save I load just for the relaxation of wandering about without needing torch / weapon-aiming strats for wolfie-bois, and having an absolutely ridiculous pile of candy bars, beef jerky, ketchup chips and Salty Crackers on the counter of Mystery Lake's Camp Office. ☻
Keep it up with these kinds of videos. I really like that they range from just pure logical things like the clothes and the waterfall to more cheesy stuff like the "aim assist". I for one really find these kinds of tips. Both interesting and helpful!
i got one tip, in the hunted challenge when the bear is hunting you , if i wolf is chasing you the bear will stay stand still or even dont spawn...... u can always get a wolf chasing you .
I went into this video thinking i was an expert knowing everything you were gunna say and it was going to be laughable info. I was wrong by far! 7.5 out of the 10 tips i had no idea about and were awesome. Thank you!
My dad played kingdom come and when playing the archery mini game it removes your crosshair while aiming, so he taped a mimic crosshair made of paper to the origin of the tv and it worked every time.
When I first started playing TLD I went a long time using an awful mouse in which I could not right click or scroll -- left click only! Imagine the pain! Yet I still fell in love with the game. Except trying to shoot a stupid gun. Because I couldn't aim with the revolver I would have to just spam from the hip and hope I hit something. Really wish I knew this trick then! Now I have a super nice gaming mouse =) Possibly one of the nicest things I own! So many buttons!
1000 hours into the game, enjoyed this video as hell, even though some of the tips seem pretty useless ^^ For instance cabin fever will get worse if you continue passing time indoors, so it's only postponing the issue
I have just passed the 100 day mark on long dark thanks to this video! The longest I had ever survived was 27 days😂 Thank you so much! What an awesome video!!
Really interesting, thanks! I know this game from many years (I downloaded the alpha or beta version on my pc .. It was before the release of the game on Xbox, where I play now) but I never thought about these triks! Thanks!
3:30 - When harvesting, drop (key 3) intermediately, so you don't attract predators. When finish, take what find convenient (meat in the wild i not eat y wolves, bear) and run for home. ;)
Do lamp oil cans weigh anything, or do they just weigh as much as the oil they contain? I assumed they worked like water does so I have always let the jerry can despawn due to it offering me no benefit.
@@Zaknafein Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. Is it because each lamp oil container has an empty weight, or is it a weight penalty per volume of lamp oil? Does a jerry can have an 'empty weight'?
@@knurlgnar24 I am honestly not sure, but I have seen an empty jerry can and it weighed 0.11 kg. The numbers dont quite make sense to me so I am not entirely sure whats going on with them, to be honest.
Hands down the best survival game I've played. It is brutal and unforgiving without the feeling that the devs are doing this to you. When I think of the gaming term "immersive", I think of TLD.
The tips you mention from my perspective: 1.) I never use the Flare Gun, because it doesn't do much damage the prey nor it benefits you with weapon skills. I go with Hunting Rifle, Revolver or Bow instead. 2.) I never run toward a wolf like that, I just throw the torch in mid-range and it still scares the wolf without risk even if I'm encumbered. 3.) Ok this one is insane, because going through a waterfall like this hits two flies in one strike. 4.) I literally was never thinking about this method to protect myself from blizzard, but there is one main reason for it. Because wind direction usually changes, that doesn't protect me from cold. 5.) Okay, this is really good, but only advantageous when you kill a bear and then again, the wind direction doesn't change. Not the most reliable method to harvest. 6.) Well, speaking of organizing a backpack, the "sort" option below is more effective and the Jerry Can itself does not allow you to keep only just a few oil, you have to drop the entire can or just carry all of them. For this reason I use up all the content of the Jerry Can and pick up Lantern Fuel as those contain seperate amount of oil. This way you can keep just the amount of what you really need. 7.) Okay, this trick feels like cheating, but on a long time to harvest item this is really great. Really good to know method, I will use it when I have nothing to write into my Journal. 8.) Yep, this is a very minor thing, but might be crucial on Loper. I wonder if Loper players using this method for long lasting calorie store of their character to maximize their survivability. 9.) Alright....this is straight up cheating now. xD When you are in freezing state and tired, this will be mandatory so I'm going to use it. Yeah, sure it's only handy at the Revolver's case, but absolutely worth it especially that aiming down the sight the wolf immediately attack you. The Revolver is indeed handy for that and works really well. For reliable kills I just pick the Rifle. 10.) This is also straight up cheating. At this rate I can use the Bedroll as a lightsource instead of actual lightsources and just repair anything during daytime. 10+1.) I often use this, when I can't see shit and really handy. At the end of the video I have no idea how the rabbits are not scared of you but whatevs. xD
Thank you for your perspective. I must disagree with your 1) though: the flare goes can do massive damage and even one shot a moose. I agree it isnt aimed at hunting, but if you did you can one shot any animal. See my other 10 tips for details :)
@@Zaknafein Well okay, when I used it somehow just couldn't kill anything the last time, but I take a look at the rest of your tips video. Thank you for the quick reply.
