Imo, one of the special features of TLD was permadeath. Yes, I can just choose to die, but I don´t want that choice. I think it was introduced because the cougar will kill you if you do not kill it. It´s ruining one of the core fartures thet set TLD apart for other games, and it needs to go away...

The cougar seems a bit rushed like they reworked some of the darkwalker mechanics or something instead of adding a real new animal.

I think it would be better for the cougar to only spawn in high altitude regions, if it is in every regions it will become a permanent threat and im not in favor of that. But I do think it should be a super predator that is super hard to kill with a lot of consequences if you fail

I think I'd prefer the cougar work something like this: 1) Spawning grace period at game start -- 20 days scaling by difficulty. 2) Player gets the anxiety debuff when the cougar is moving into their current region. It takes 1-2 days for the cougar to arrive. 3) It stays in the region for 7-8 days. 4) It has a # of camping locations in every region. It spawns at one of them and is respawned to another every 8-10 hours, provided the player isn't close to it. 5) The cougar is not visible from a long distance. It only renders when you get close. Distance scales with weather and light. 6) Other than that, handle it like any other animal. If the player stumbles close to where it is camping hidden, it stalks the PC. It doesn't bleed out. I think I'd probably also make a small chance the cougar leaves a claw stuck in the player after a struggle and make the cougar claw knife more of a consumable. Low durability weapon that is almost like a melee survival flare. Maybe even allow the player to shorten a bear struggle by spending one. Also make bombing the cougar's nest shut it off for a lot longer 60+ days at least.

I think my favourite part of the game is the very beginning. I like a Custom version of Voyageur with Interloper starting gear -- to make the beginning more of a challenge, but there's still lots of loot to be had. But having said that, I do like bow-hunting, and then returning to my regional base and sitting by a crackling fire to cook venison. Very therapeutic.

I like this long-format discussion style video. I like hearing your thoughts in detail. Overall, I love the new patch; they wrapped up the Tales (and I look forward to you playing it-the Weather Station is not the end) l, the new region is awesome, Cheat Death is awesome and not at all a giveaway, and I enjoy watching other people play Misery and may give it a try someday. S an older player, I like that they’ve basically put an old-age simulator into the game. I would not have played with the cougar because it didn’t look at all fun, but I very much look forward to seeing what they do to fix it.

For the past year, I’ve always spawned in the Far Territories. I love those regions, and some I’ve mostly been trying to complete the Tales, spawning in the Airfield made the most sense. Now that the Tales are complete, I’m looking forward to going back to the original regions.

I want them to add it back in. I think it would awesome. I only found out about it like a few days after it was taken out! I would love to see it again if put in correctly. Though personally I'd take Fluffy coming back in really.

I have thoughts on Misery, as well. I like the new afflictions, but I think they should be triggered by something other than time, like letting your health drop to a certain point, or letting your meters go in the red a certain number of times. Such an approach would be thoughtfully aimed at adding a cost to the tools and exploits that really skilled interloper players use to survive on that mode. I’d love to watch a stream where a really skilled player can’t use “use health as a resource” or “use the starvation tactic.”

I played an interloper run with Cheat Death and had a great time with that, even though I was gone-gone within three days. Permadeath still exists if you can’t stabilize within three tries, and every try gets tougher. Embrace the Dark!

This is the only game I play. I love everything about it. I was definitely on the side of the cougar haters. It serves no purpose to the story. It was a jump scare that forced you to move through the game on it's schedule not the your own. I appreciate Hinterland paying attention to the reaction from the community and deciding to reimage it's addition. I don't see the purpose of Misery mode. If they wanted to provide a greater challenge for Interloper players it would've been simpler to add a "Loper +" which would scramble the loot tables, including "guarantied" spawns each time you began a new run. Every run would be like a blind run. I really dig watching you and a couple other amazing players, but your map knowledge combined with knowing exactly where to head from any spawn point to get guarantied matches, flares, clothing, stims, etc. takes a lot of the edge off. I've watched you spawn into multiple new regions blind and do amazingly well. In the end this is just a game. I think Hinterland has done an amazing job and I'm still in awe of their creativeness. I'm not going anywhere.

What you described for the change the Community wants for the cougar is the bare minimum. As part of that, I’d also say that armor should have an effect on damage. Finding out that armor class was irrelevant to damage done was a last straw for me. The cougar just didn’t play by the rules. That having been said, I’ll be happy with whatever they do. Even if I don’t love it, I love the game.

I would also suggest that even a lot of the people who were happy with the original cougar will like Cougar 2.0 better. That’s assuming the changes respond to the complaints.

I would love it if the cougar could only spawn close to you (say 20m) but always out of sight. When it spawns it would be silent and quick so you have to be ready with your weapon and checking your surroundings constantly. It would also keep you safe as long as you stay out in the open but eventually you will need to pass some trees or a rock or climb a hill and then you are in a lot of trouble.

I love the Sundered Pass area. What I did not liked was about 20-25 timber wolf carcasses in the small area. But once I buldozered through, I found there is new update, which tuned them down. Is it me or blizzards are not so frequent in the Sundered Pass? Harsh weather yes, but not blizzard yet.

This game is "played out".. I played the game religiously for several months when it first came out. Then again when Wintermute was released, and I followed it through until they dropped Wintermute seasons over and over. Then opted to say "screw you" to the loyal players and put all of their eggs in the DLC basket with "Tales from the Far Territory" . That put the final episode of Wintermute on the backburner.

Last and every content update i like as you can easily tell this game is made with love and thought. But for me most important is how much relax it gives me to travel thru this frozen world. I feel exactly like you said at the end its like a refuge and the world you can sink in a lot. Also i want to thank you as i really inherited many tips and whole thought process of cracking this game thanks to your videos and explenations. I made 500 days on stalker and at the moment i am runing interloper day 135 and i still have to visit FA which i am preparing to do soon but it ended my last run at day 97 :/ Great game and great content you are making! thank for that!

I'm very upset with Hinterland, and here's why. This is not a DLC, but more and more a different game. It's not a skin, it's not just about new regions: it's different items and then different mechanics. As you say, they are things added to the "base game itself". So it's not an expansion, it's a different game that nobody announced when i paid the game. At that time, if they'd told me that was (maybe...?) half of the game, i could think differently about my purchase. The reason is not money, but the way i intend to consume. Talking of which, my basic rules are: 1) i don't like payment in installments (i prefer to buy what i can actually buy with the money i have). 2) i don't like surprise payments (that i consider nothing less than a fraud). 3) i don't like someone that unilaterally changes terms and conditions changing the structure of a deal. 4) i don't like to pay something (storymode) and never recive it, while the seller comes to me and try to sell me something else... All this things are disrespectful to the customers, and i'm very disappointed by customers themselves: totally uncritical, passive, disposed to accept everything with no positions on it. Customers should never be passive! The passive ones are just a particular kind of customers: the drug addicted ones. Most important thing, quite complex, and i will try to be clear even if english is not my first language and sry about that: in videogames the word "community" has changed a lot its meaning. A community was a thing where devs are in constant feedback with players NOT in the way to let them pay again and again, but in the way to develope the game (ALREADY owned by players) in a way all are happy with. The point is not building a customer loyalty, but a community: when you have the game, you have the game, period. Then devs develop the game to improve it, to increase that community and make it bigger and better. Of course you paid an "entry ticket" (because game was the result of a work), but then you were in, no matter what. And your value (for owners of the game) was your presence, from that moment. The money value was already paid. This was the meaning of community: of course devs have to pay their work, but new purchases and/or aestetic features or extra contents NOT related to game itself are the way. Or even a "donate more" button (that I pressed several times in other games), so the people of the community can CHOOSE to give other money or not, but they are still in the same community. With this game, we are now TWO communities and maybe in the future we will be even more. So, Hinterland, at least stop to embellish what is a pure commercial thing and nothing else with an ambiguous language. Words have a meaning and are important. This thing is nothing different than other money makers around, stop to call it different, because in this way you are cancelling what is actually different, because we don't have a word to call it.

the problem that stuck with me the most with the cougar implementation is that it completely ruines the immersion. instead of filling the world with life by adding a real animal threat like the rest of the animals, with it's own quirks and intellect it does the opposite by being the fakest thing in the entire game: playing random cat sounds around you and throwing big scary texts like "cougar is around ooh 👻" (i guess the survivor just has a cougar sensor in their pocket) until you inevitably get jumped

i also agreed with the timberwolf thing u said i think they should add a cloak with timberwolf pelts that adds like a camo effect which makes it harder for wildlife to detect u

I didn't see the poll, but I'd be againt how they implemented it. The fact it always does 66 damage is also stupid. How is your percentage of protection not involved in an attack like this.

Hinterland will mostly reconsider the balance between the Cougar being an easy threat to deal with versus the Cougar being a guaranteed maul down animal for a chance for it's rewards. Because if they don't reconsider the Cougar this way they end up releasing a filler animal unlike a true challenge animal. The rewards should be better for such risks of what the Cougar pressures the player with. Currently, the Moose, the Bear and even a Deer now has way better risk/reward ratio unlike the Cougar. You can craft +5 KG Satchel from a Moose, you can craft a Bear Bedroll from the Bear, you can craft a Travois from the Deers. These rewards are already versatile and tremendous in survival situations. The new Cougar Knife is only good for a reward if guarantees kills immediately after struggles against wolves or significantly faster bleedout from them so we can get craft materials more efficiently. The Cougar Head Wrap is just a warmer version of any warm headgear in the game which can be neglected for the reason that balaclavas, accessory headwraps, warm hats and other head covering clothing items in the game only serves with increased protection against wildlife if you don't know what you are doing and more protective layers against a slightly harsher weather than usual. That is something that you mostly won't ever craft in Interloper even if it's a must in most Misery plays.

Hi Zak! I’ve heard conflicting things about this so I wanted to see if the resident long dark enthusiast would know the answer. Is it still safe to leave raw and cooked meat outside in the snow? I’ve heard that wolves and bears may eat them if they are left outside or if a wolf is stalking you and you enter a building with the meat lying outside. What are your thoughts on this? If anyone else knows the answer it would be fantastic! 😅 Edit: I also forgot to include, Is it still possible to “billygoat” down Timberwolf mountain’s summit? I’ve heard Hinterland has been adding more Death boxes that instant kill the player.

Would we be correct to assume it’s impossible to find the Preppers Pie recipe in MISERY? Since there are no bunker spawns just like Interloper?

ZAK, you absolutely should make a list of the things which you think will improve the gameplay. Not primarily to have a video but also for Hinterland. Little things like the game defaulting to a hold burning torch/flare when starting a fire or not defaulting to birch bark when player has other tinder. It just seems the game wants us players to waste resources. But yes - Hinterland did an awesome job on creating this amazing game!

Commenting again bc I got to the end of the video- I think my favourite part of this new update is the cheat death. I was also kind of apprehensive when it was announced, but I really like how it was implemented. It adds an extra challenge! The misery mode isn't really my thing (I mostly play voyager mode) but it's been a lot of fun watching youtubers try it out. (Also I like this video format! :) )
