@@mikemiken1963 R-Truth's heel turn at the time was excellent, and he had a damn good character going. They could've kept going with it, instead they fell back into the comfort zone of having him be more comedic. Big missed opportunity, imo.
@@dennett316 absolutely 100% agree. That was his best/most interesting run in the company and I loved it. Don't get me wrong, he's naturally funny, but that heel run was pretty compelling and the Awesome Truth stuff worked. It was cool seeing him mix it up with Cena and even The Rock. They definitely should've let it run longer and invested in him more.
Jinder Mahal wasn't even a midcarder. He was a legit jobber before his push. He stated in one interview afterwards that he had trouble doing offence because he didn't even train doing moves beyond basic holds punches and maybe a bodyslam as he never got to use them anyways. That's also the big difference to Bradshaw. Bradshaw was a midcarder and tag team wrestler, but he at least was allowed to win matches and put up some offence which allowed him to work much better in the position of being a champion.
Jinder gets a lot of stick for his run but it's not his fault. He was pushed too quickly and should have been given proper time to train and build his character. It might have actually helped him get over in India as well.

With a proper build, more wrestlers could have become main eventers then there has been. It is all about the story and presentation. Hardcore Holly could have been more credible giving more time and could have focused on how tough he is. Jinder Mahal needed a proper build and more character development to have made him seem a more worthy challenger. Look at how Kevin Owens has been built. The build to TLC made him a realsitic threat to Reigns and during the PPV there were a couple of times where I thought "Is he actually going to win". At the end there was no doubt that even in defeat, KO has cemented himself as a top player and looked far better than his original Universal title run.
Everyone was shitting on that go home Smackdown beat down of KO, but when he got up sat in the chair and called Reigns out. I thought damn that’s how you book a badass babyface
I think you're forgetting the fact that no matter how a wrestler is built up, they NEED to connect to the crowd and the audience. Neither Holly nor Jinder had/have that ability. Regardless of well they got/get booked. Not everyone has the charisma to be a top champion.
Man, I do feel really bad for The Patriot as he was a good wrestler with a good gimmick and all it came down his career ending to dumb luck and a freak injury. It is really heartbreaking and sadly all two common even in today's wrestling. Wade Barrett, Mufasila Ali, Ken Kennedy are just a few of the many many examples that come to this example. Hell, I even remember the match that Wade Barrett got hurt the first time when he injured his shoulder in his match and you could see that just as he dislocated his shoulder on the bad spot, with his good arm, you can clearly see him slamming it on the ground because him, just all of us watching at the time knew that we saw his push came to a sudden and abrupt halt, and for the most part that was exactly what happened. Yeah he did come back and got himself over with the Bad News Barrett gimmick, but then they answered back by giving him the King Barrett gimmick and by that time that was all she wrote on Barrett's run in the WWE as we knew it.
Yes, definitely a great 180 gimmick turn. His real life helped him, and his experience made him a great heel champion. WWE had younger guys coming up and he knew he was basically going to be a transitional heel champion, but he turned it into a good several month run.
Mahal's biggest win pre-becoming Number 1 Contender and then WWE Champion was beating Richie Steamboat to reach the final of the tournament to crown the first NXT Champion. Hey, making it to a Final is a big deal!

Oh God, I forgot the Boss Man/Big Show "casket feud" was for the title. That moment of Big Show hugging his dad's casket as Boss Man drove away, and Show obviously pushing himself off it to roll onto the grass, is more memorable than anything else those two have done. OH GOD, I forgot way-past-his-prime Cain had an actual title shot!
I loved Hardcore Holly during the Attitude Era, but had lapsed from watching before his title shot against Lesnar. When I started watching again in the last few years I was pretty belatedly stoked to learn about it.

@Chuck Buskee I don't think anyone is going to argue that Ron Simmons could have been a main eventer at any time in WWE, but when his title match (I believe his only WWF Title match, let alone on PPV) came, no one thought he was taking the title off of Undertaker. Was hardly built up as a challenger. I think Nation Of Domination Faarooq as WWF Champion could have been amazing.
Capital carnage 98 had xpac vs the rock for the wwf title and earlier had triple h vs jeff jarret...I actually like xpac but surely he and triple h should have been swapped round.

i feel like ricochet hasn’t got over with many people because his matches are crazy spot fests. i personally, really like the guys aesthetic and enjoy his matches for the most part. But his wrestling is so unbelievable, and most of his moves look as if they cause 0 damage to his opponents.

No but he was European champion for a while after beating William Regal and has held the old version of the Cruiserweight title , Hardcore title 8 times and the WWF/E Tag team title with Tazz he also challenged Stone Cold for the WWF/E title on an edition of Smackdown .

I'm definitely all for mixing up title contenders with unexpected challengers every once in a while to keep things fresh and, hopefully, so that the spotlight will give a new person a rub (pause) and elevate them in some capacity - much like it did for Jey Uso, for example. It really should've been done with Ricochet, but like the rest of his main roster run they squandered it. Those cases aside, it really can be fun once in a while to see a new face mixing it up, but it definitely has to be within reason that they COULD win. If there's no way to suspend your disbelief - Hardcore Holly - then it's all for naught.
