Have been on Windows my entire digital life. Bought my first iMac. Loving it, though I need to relearn a number of things. Your videos are awesome, concise, clear and they are making this transition so much easier. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Gary got me through that transition as well, after 20 agonising years on Windows (and 7 years on MSDOS!!)! No one else has this in-depth knowledge of the Mac! Probably not even all the separate teams at Apple😉!
Same here... Been using a PC for 35 years... Sure is a big jump to Mac But I am really liking how the OS works and my new M1 14" MacBook Pro is so light and fast... iCloud is FANTASTIC! Gary has gotten me right back up to speed after a few weeks of watching all of his videos!
I totally agree with you. Here in the Netherlands we do have folks who explain some things but they are so boring to listen, but not Gary, I learned a lot.
Control-Command-Q also returns you to your lock screen. Shift-Command-3 takes a screenshot. Shift-Command-4 lets you take a partial screenshot. Those are the three I use the most, I guess.
The Apple native Notes app really really needs "revert to version" function as Pages offers. Glad you pointed that out for Pages. I'd say from Apple execs to the common user - the Notes app is becoming increasingly relative... its also easy to inadvertently erase or delete content within a note. Would be helpful to do a video on how to recover notes version using TimeMachine (if possible). I don't think it is given the Plist formatting and how the containers are structured to store the content
Brilliant as always, Gary. Thanks. Until now (so for the past 11 years!) and like others I've been using Automator to batch rename files. Your way is so much quicker. I love the paper tape option on Calculator, too.
I learn so much from this video. In fact my husband teached me also some things but now I can teach him 😂😂😂. Wonderfull video’s and please never stop these interesting and learnfull video’s.
Very interesting hidden features. Now all I have to do is take enough Prevagen to remember them. Or buy a David Pogue book and spend the next month reading and memorizing it.
I have some weird issue, I changed the voice over voice to be Siri Female, yet when I use the 'Speech' function it uses the Alex voice which I removed, however when I press Option + ESC it reads it with Siri Female.
3:44 I just tried to enable dictation and an alert popped up saying "To help your Mac recognize what you're saying, other information is sent as well, such as the names of your contacts."
Yes. It uses your list of names to understand when you say those names. So, for instance, when you say Bob Adams it knows it is supposed to be Bob Addams because that's what is in your contacts.
Summarizing articles? This would've helped me in school. Is there a way to paraphrase the summary...😉...so cool, (just used the character chooser)!! Revert to...where have you been all my life? Reader view, no ads...can it be used in Chrome as well? Very helpful video, thanks!
Another great video Gary. I had been a windows user for many years and finally bought an iMac. Wow! so much more you can do, so many more features and capabilities than windows. Thank you for a great guided tour!
have you ever opened the mac and cleaned the dust inside? I saw some youtube videos that substitute the thermal past on the CPU for heat absorb and make the mac to not heat up . Did you do it? Do you recommend?
Gary, thanks again and again. I have come form Windows - best decision ever -, but still have a lot to learn. So I watch your videos and take notes till I learn and can easily use your tips and tricks. Huge thumbs up!
A random question that fits this list. I have a 13” laptop, so I also have a monitor. Sometimes I hit the dock just right and it moves to the monitor, but I don’t know how I did it, so I can’t move it back. 🤪🥴. Please help. Thanks so much for your videos. I’m a Mac user about 10 years, and I always learn some thing new, or something I forgot. Keep up the great work!
Many of the tips in this video are outstanding for me. I love knowing how to bring the Reader View up when the icon doesn't show in the menu bar, plus, many of the others. Thanks!
I’ve been using Apple since the IIe before Macs existed. I thought I knew a lot - and I do - but Gary’s videos have amazed me. There’s little nuggets here and there that I’ve really helpful. Great channel!!
Gary, please would you do a tutorial on Accessibility keyboard v Switch control and in particular why you can't use switch control panels (advanced mouse) with accessibility keyboards? I have cerebral palsy am able to type but struggle with mouse. Thank you.
@@macmost Yeah, it seems to be one or the other accessibility keyboard or switch control and I wanted to use switch control without the scanning, so just using my bluetooth mouse. it's quite complex, I might just buy an ability net switch. Thank for getting back to me.
Gary. Is it possible to automate Time Machine, so that it makes a full backup every time I connect my external SSD? I don’t need it to be hourly, daily.. just whenever I plug the ssd.
Not really. But it should start a backup pretty quickly if you plug it in and haven't done so in the last hour. Why then not have it continue to do hourly backups while you have it connected? Time Machine can only help you if you use it. Are you OK with losing 6 hours of work if your drive crashes just because you didn't happen to plug in the drive?
Gary , please do video on switching example@rr.com from pop3 to IMAP so my iPhone and macbook are synchronized. I don't want to lose all my old emails. Thanks
How you do that depends on your email service provider. Instructions for doing it in iCloud or Gmail won't help you with whatever "rr.com" is. Is that a ISP? Maybe this is a good time to switch away from ISP email: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LXsixHC7KIc.html
rr.com is the road runner email from Time Warner Cable, now Spectrum Cable. It’s my main email I’ve been using for 25 years. I just recently got new MacBook Air and trying to get iPhone pop3 working with MacBook imap. Trying to switch iPhone over to imap. I do have gmail but don’t use it often. Thanks, love your videos.
In Pages, when I hit BROWSE ALL VERSIONS , I get the download symbol from icloud, where all my versions are saved. I have to download each one. Is there a way I could save all versions on my mac and still save copies to the icloud?
Two things: 1) I really like that your videos teach people what they already have on their Mac. It always has bothered me that people will get a new Mac and immediately load it up with all manner of crap their Mac can already do without special software. I learn something new almost every video and I've been a Mac user for 12 years. 2) I wish Apple would take a break and not do yearly updates. I only know about half of the features my Mac has without them adding new ones each year. Every 3-4 years would be great and each release would have far less issues because they are actually ready. Just my thoughts.
Thanks! Apple really doesn't add very much each year. If they did them every other year, they would probably add twice as much so it would be the same in the end. Better to get a few new things each year than many new things every other. The learning "leap" would be greater.
For special characters and accents Unix and Linux also have access to the compose key, so I think the Mac should too. When enabled, you press the compose key and then type two letters and depending on the letters you choose it combines them into one character. For instance if you press the compose key and then type an a and then " you get ä. It makes it very handy for working with different languages. On the Gnome desktop on Linux the setting can be found in Gnome Tweak Tools. On a Mac the setting should be somewhere, well, in the settings.
You can do that on the Mac too. In fact, it predates all other methods. For instance, type Option+e and then e and you get é. Type Option+u and then o and you get ö. Lots of other combinations.
Yes the Mac can do that as well, but there are a lot of options to remember, so personally I prefer to simply hold a certain letter, which causes all different options to pop-up and choose from.
