Thank you for this video! I grew up half-Vietnamese in the states and growing up, my dad would continuously add bits of more food to my bowl or plate during meals. Back then it annoyed me because I'd be so full and so closed to finishing my meal and he'd plop another piece of meat or vegetables for me to finish (It was our culture to finish everything on our plates). He passed away 6 years ago and part of my healing process has been learning how to cook the foods we grew up with and learning more about Vietnamese culture as I want to visit one day. Like how you mentioned, he rarely ever said I love you. From your video, I just found out that him adding food was a sign of affection in more ways than I had ever realized as a kid. I'm currently crying my eyes out lol

One of my favorite memories while traveling through Vietnam -/ I was invited into several Vietnamese homes for home cook meals and I truly enjoyed and cherished these experiences and memories. However, I could never truly feel comfortable sitting on the floor while eating. In the states, I always bring a bottle of wine when I come to dinner at friends homes, but since Vietnamese people don’t drink wine, I brought several kilograms of fruits. Vietnamese people are kind and warm, but they can spoil ya like a child sitting at dinner table....after I conveyed a moment of gratitude for the invitation to dinner, my plate instantly got fill with foods lol. And, after dinner I offered to wash the dishes, but I was kicked out of the kitchen 🥴 because of these wonderful experiences, I have a home in Saigon. A piece of my heart is forever embedded in vietnam because Vietnamese people enlightened my soul with their kindness.

I am Vietnamese American and learned so much. Thank you! The Vietnamese etiquette reflects a culture that is very respectful, loving, and generous. The only question I have is: "Do people mind some double dipping... someone sharing food with you with their own chopsticks?" My parents always used the serving spoon to share food. Thank you. Great video.
@WhatThePho
@WhatThePho 3 года назад
Hi Laura! Thanks so much for your support! There are a lot of dinning etiquette and of course, it will vary depending on where you're from. I've heard a lot of my friends from the South said that they don't have those table manners, so it's really up to the regions :)) Personally, I don't mind people sharing food with the own chopsticks since I was born and raised that way, but I felt a bit uncomfortable seeing people doing that when I first came back from the US, I was so used to the serving style in the US. So with that being said, I'm willing to adapt to anything.

Thank you Van for these etiquettes! To be honest, I've never paid attention when scooping rice into a bowl, but from now on I'll surely avoid single scoops. Nevertheless, regarding sharing acts, I would highly recommend grabbing the food with large ends of one's own chopsticks or using spare ones. If such manners are not so comfortable, the food should only be shared before everyone starts eating.
