I was introduced to my Vietnamese wife by her aunt in the US who told me I needed to meet a nice girl . I went to Vietnam and met her , went through the paperwork and here we are 25 great years later .
@ere ere On our marriage certificate her ethnicity is noted as " Kinh " which stems from Northern Vietnam and Southern China . Her Grandfather , who was a wonderful old guy and lived to 101 , was originally from the North .

Chris Bisho Whoaaaa what a beautiful story. I’m Vietnamese American and I love to hear stories like this. In my opinion, interracial marriage is such a beautiful thing because the couples have to work extra hard to adapt to each other’s different cultures, different upbringings as well as ways of living. Congrats on your 25 years of marriage.
I was once married to a lovely Japanese woman. Not learning Japanese made it impossible for me to ever really know her family, and ultimately that played a part in the demise of our relationship. Heed my advice, and the advice of the guy in this video...if you marry a woman (or man) from a country foreign to you, do your best to learn their native tongue.
Total BS. Married and I know zero Vietnamese. My wife does all the translating and covers for me with any situation be it family, friends or locals in the street. Very happy successful marriage so STFU

Having moved to Vietnam from the USA, my wife and I have been adopted by a wonderful family and many very close friends. We've been coming to Vietnam for five years and spent one and a half years here during the covid19 lockdown before deciding to sell everything in the USA and moved to Vietnam. We are slowly picking up phases and learning many customs. It not easy for us being elderly but we're trying. Vietnam is a fabulous country with amazingly friendly people and a rich history. But I was always told by my father "if you're not learning your wasting your life. So my wife and I are still learning and really appreciate our great new life in Vietnam. We feel truly fortunate and blessed to live this wonderful life in this great country! THANK YOU for having us Vietnam! Sam and Margaret Adler
Phuc Map, one thing I wished you would have addressed is how serious the girls get after you date them like 3x. Someone in another video mentioned that casual dating isn't a thing there as the girls get attached by the 3rd date and think they are an item. Maybe you can address it on your channel one day.
My boyfriend is Vietnamese, and he's the best! Next week I move from Russia to Vietnam to live with him finally! I really love Vietnamese people, they are so kind, easy-going and and they can be amazing partners! Love to everyone!
I'm married to a beautiful, amazing Vietnamese woman and got married in Vietnam 19 years ago. However I'm super glad we met and fell in love in my home country.
@@sheencurry8946 We met at university in my home country. If you have ever been to Vietnam you already know so many of their women are gorgeous. It's finding one that is loving, caring and right for you that's the real trick.
@National Socialist Vietnamese Workers Party We all hope you never make more than $200 USD a month. Let's hope the hunger never ends. It's people like you that keep Vietnam from being truly free.
I was able to speak my wife's language before we were married, so when I went back for the wedding, I was able to speak with the whole family in either English or their dialect, whichever they chose to speak in. It's good that we're able to understand each other, and it's good that they were able to choose which language to use......after all, I am the foreigner. I have met a lot of women from my wife's country, who married guys from my country. Some have said their husbands banned them for speaking in their language at home, or even to cook food from where they came. Very few actually make the effort to learn the language of their wife. Perhaps this just comes down to a husband's need for control, I'm not sure. But, I've been left wondering at times, if they guy doesn't like the food, doesn't like the culture, doesn't like the language, why did he get married to her in the first place? A lot of times at cultural gatherings, et al, they sit in the corner with other like minded countrymen, beers in their hands, and they don't involve themselves with the activities taking place around them. The other issue as well is when you have children. Children are very observant. They can pick up what their fathers think about where their mother comes from by his attitude towards anything related to her culture, language, etc. Imagine growing up and not being exposed in a positive way, to the culture of your mother? This can also affect the way the children interact with their family members back in their mother's homeland as well, and, how the children see themselves as well, since half of who they are, comes from their mother.
Bryan Entwistle ,Dear ,I like your point of view ,- ."If a man doesn't like a woman's culture, language, or food, he shouldn't marry her and then ban them from speaking their language, or their food." That's the bad thing.
I ended up in Vietnam in 1990. When you traveled to any city, you had to surrender your passport at the local police station and they would place a city stamp in it. Most tourist places had a tri-pricing. 1 price for Foreigners, 1 price for Returning Vietnamese and 1 price for local Vietnamese. The one thing that I walked away from my time in Vietnam was how honest, industrious, independent, and overall self-sufficient. I knew this country would do well in the future. I found the women to be at the top compared to all other Asian countries that I lived in.
1990 is not open, acctually that year is a year the country officially stop operate in War mode, every place is no camera, no filming, and foreigners from west are being treated in kind of untrust. But that changed very fast afterward when Clinton lift off the sanction in 1992. 1990 is the year we and china agreed to neutralize the two countries relationship, at 1989 both sides still fire cannon to each other at border 🤣
Don't know about marriage, but I have very beautiful best friend from Vietnam. I am always willing to learn her culture and language. She feels very much happier to know that I am learning and respecting her culture. She also respect me and my choices and support me in every part of life. She is so good person. She appreciates every little thing I do for her. I don't know about every other vietnamese girl but talking about my best friend, she is really sweet person and I am grateful to have her in my life. Just like from quality of a single grain, you can judge the whole sack. From knowing her, I can say that vietnamese people are really sweet and Friendly.
As an American who is now married to a Vietnamese lady more than 45 years I respectfully offer the following comments. When comparing a Vietnamese with any foreigner many people seem to think that we are comparing cat with dog. We are in fact simply comparing human being with human being and that every single human being in this world is unique. Of course... cultural difference will play out but believe me... there are ladies here in Vietnam where my wife and I have been living for the last 30 years... yes means yes and no means no. Simply be natural and respectful with each-other and assuming both parties to a relationship have reasonably similar interests then happiness will abound. Resolve any issue that may have come up during the day before going to bed and let the passcode on the phones be the same as a matter of trust and simplicity. One thing that Phuc Map is absolutely correct is that foreigners in Vietnam should try to learn Vietnamese. Knowing Vietnamese makes the experience here so much more fun and indeed meaningful. Good luck with your channels!

im now on year 8 of my marriage to my vietnamese wife. its a challenge yes but also very unique and interesting. i read a t-shirt while in vietnam, it said "im not afraid of you! my wife is vietnamese!" lol...good luck bro! lol...
Smart of her to dodge the relationship question. Also smart of her to tease it at the start of the video. It's the same thing japanese idols do. She is cute and no doubt has many thirsty male fans (who are hopefully polite enough to not harass her). Announcing she has a boyfriend could impact her views.
I’m Vietnamese, I’m 13 years old from Vietnam moved to NSW Australia since Feb 2017, My Dad was a refugee and asylum seeker during the Vietnam war, the video is super amazing.
I'm impressed by Phuc Map's Vietnamese. Well done. I can appreciate the advice from Phuc Map, "show the soon-to-be wife and her family that you care and your willingness to learn their language and their culture. It will endear you to them." After hearing his advice on this video, I realized that it must have helped me with my wife and with her family.
Really enjoyed this video. I'm starting to learn more Vietnamese from my mum so hoping to strengthen my roots even more so this video is very encouraging.
Hi dear. 😁 Hurley is amazing and super cool, his Vietnamese and knowledge of Vietnamese traditions/culture are far better than mine. 😅👍(I’m here 🇻🇳 since 2008) Well, I’m just a 50 years old French and I’m more a solitary person than mixing with people, so I don’t communicate much. Only with my students but most of the time in English. 😊 I subscribe to his channel hoping learning a lot about our heart’s country. Thanks dear. 🤗❤️🇻🇳
@@svennielsen633 sue me simp. I'm going by the channel name as many do on RU-vid. Do u feel better? Are u just praying that Van sees this and falls to her knees for you?... hoping next video when asked if she is dating someone it will be you? Wake up man, and just enjoy the information she is providing..
Kudos to this guy for learning the language and culture. I live in Indonesia married to an Indonesian woman, and though she speaks my languages, I wouldn't dream of living in the country without being fluent in the language and understanding a fair amount of the culture, society and history. In fact it changed my life. 👍🏼
I watched his video with you. And now I'm watching your video with him. Both of you are my favorite youtubers in Vietnam. Both of you have unique backgrounds and experiences. I love the advice and content.
Really great interview. I grew up in Hawa'ii and married my best Friend, a Japanese-Hawaiian Girl. Luckily I spoke Japanese and Hawa'iian early. This is one of the greatest gestures of Respect for a Family. I studied Japanese Culture and the Language in their Honor. They really appreciated this...
Oi gioi oi I really enjoyed the conversation honesty you had with Phuc Map.. 🙏🏻👍 It was certainly a different video from you. I learnt a few good explanation from Phuc Map as I too have a vietnamese girlfriend! And agree whole heartedly that what Phuc Map said about traditions and culture is the main reason why I chose Vietnam 🇻🇳 and why my better half is Vietnamese too 😊❤️ I really want to adhere to his comment about learning the language and “Duty” is a good word Phuc Map chose is why I need to get cracking and take some lessons thanks 🙏🏻. I get by but it needs to be much more . Great Video Van especially this one Cam on 🤣
Hurley is my hero in speaking Vietnamese .... I can't wait to get back to VN to start studying it properly because as he says.. it's important to learn the language.. especially if living there or dating a Vietnamese women.. no matter how good her English may be! Hope to meet both of you someday!
I agree with the language thing. I was in Central America in the 90's. I was introduced to a young lady at a house party because in this country women won't talk to men unless they are trying to sell something. I was taught how to write in Spanish in High School and in college but not speak it much. So I started asking her about herself and then to be a little flirty, I would ask her the Spanish name for her body parts like legs, head, face. I would ask in Spanish and then sometimes I would intentionally mispronounce the words and she would giggle like a little girl. Not much came of it but an enjoyable evening. Good tip for the future!!
Awesome video and discussion. Taking notes as I’m recently married to a Vietnamese women but living in the US. Still had same learnings as PM lol. She is the best thing that happened to my life amazing woman saved my life really. Planning to move to Vietnam in next couple years. Language is hard for me but I try to learn words and specifically starting with foods lol
I'm coming to Vietnam in January to meet my friend in person for the first time.(We have been talking for 3 years) She already told me we are going to her parents for 3 days. I speak no vietnamese and they speak no English. I'm a little nervous to be doing this, but she seems happy about it, so I'm just gonna go for it. Vietnamese seems so hard to learn. Wish me luck
Some basic phrases when meeting and dipping in Vietnamese Xin chào [‘sinCHoun] = hello Bạn có khỏe không? [,bænkōw(h)er ’hōng] = how are you/are you doing good? Bạn bao nhiêu tuổi? [,bænbounju: ‘tu:l] = how old are you? Pp in Vietnam love to be asked for ages! Bạn làm nghề gì? [,bænla:mei ‘zee] = what you do for living or what your job? Ồ trông trẻ đấy! [oh.. ’trōng ‘tre ‘dei] = you look young if incase being asked [‘toun ‘ko: ‘tre ‘hōng] = do I look young or after asking how old are you no matter how old they are Chắc nhiều tiền đấy [‘chuck ‘nēō ‘tēæn ‘dei] = you prolly make lots of money. They would love to hear that! Cutting out Tôi phải về đây! [‘tōfa:r ‘veidei] = I gotta go! Hẹn gặp lần sau! [‘hengup ‘lunsoun] = we’ll chill next time or I’ll see u next time!
You are in for a shock the first time there. Be very respectful and conservative around the family, and you'll be fine. Watch out, don't let the men talk you into getting drunk and eating weird stuff like snakes in a jar etc..
Thanks for answering those question's and using some of the examples from phuc maps relationship with his wife before marriage and current life with inlaws. Good info!
this is why off the bat, I try to establish the fact that I am single and I am not looking for anything to serious. marriage is for some while its not for others
Whaouu. so far the best video i watched in 2022.. humbly thank you for sharing.. Both of you.. questions were accurate, and answers were inspiring.. one word.. keep going
My BIL was introduced to Viet girl 20 years ago. They met and happily married til now. Brought her to the US. She went to Uni and is now a Director at a company yet still manages the house and cook for him every day. I also know another Viet girl married for US citizenship and dump the husband right after she gets her citizenship.
Hi Van , very interesting topic . When the western meet the East culture which is amazing thing. Because the people learning how to compromise both sides cultures and learn each other. So it depends on the people how to care about both sides. And also that could be a reason to motivate and encourage people learning different cultures in order to build a good relationship in the future. Very meaningful topic..😀
Oh wow this explains alot abt why a girl i dated had already wanted me to meet her family on the 2nd date! Didn't work out for us after the 5th date cos i panicked at how fast everything was going 😂. Now i know its just my foreign ignorance and not her wanting to tie me down so fast
Never had a girlfriend. Thinking of finding someone over there to. Women here in the US worry me from what my dad has described, so I guess I'll go to Vietnam to find someone special. I've heard so many good things about Vietnam so far. There are some very beautiful girls over there. The language barrier is going to be a problem, but I'll learn along the way I guess. Can't wait to travel!
You can learn it...look at Phuc Map. And Max McFarlin is doing it now...his skills took a major leap recently. Chris Lewis is just a freak of nature with his language skills.
I was wondering, as a westerner is it a common thing to choose a Vietnamese name like Hurley did so that it can be more comfortable for the people to call you?
What The Pho meets What The Phuc(Map). Vietnam's Hot RU-vidr vs. The self-proclaimed Vietnam's most handsome. Compelling... yet, i like you both, hihi.
Thank you so much for the videos you make, I am moving to Vietnam for work, (I am so excited ) but your videos are really helpful. Thank you and keep it up! 😁
5:31 My wife and I dated for 2 weeks before to decide to married !!! 😂👍 It was like « love at first sight! » (even she ONLY speaks Vietnamese, and I didn’t when we engaged.😅) It was a sort of « double or quits », but our couple is still solid after 14 years, even after many cultural incomprehension struggles. 😊❤️🇻🇳
You didn't talk about getting married. I got just married, official documents issued on 23 June 2022, less than day before my 30 day visa expired. To keep it simple the Vietnamese government makes it very difficult for a foreigner to marry a Vietnamese citizen. My bride started the processes months before and it still took almost all our time for a month to get married. Now the struggle with the Vietnamese government is over and now with one with the American government has started. Just yesterday my wife had an interview in the American consulate and her visa was rejected. I am 74 and she is 60 so we do not have much time to waste with bureaucracy. Listening to you about how Vietnamese woman are it seems to me younger women have become "Americanized". I thank God my wife is old school.
Very adventurous and been to 11 countries ... Definitely American :). Still great info on dating and culture. Congrats with your Vietnamese lady. I ll check more of your videos.

Hey Van, love your show. I'm Viet and living on the Gold Coast Australia 🇦🇺 . Left Vn 1983, and planning to go back to live for a few years as a trial... any tips and suggestions 🤔!!!
In the 90's you'd meet the family within 4 dates. In China women are considered "Leftover women," in the city post 30 and post 25 in the countryside. I've learned Chinese but Vietnamese would be a new challenge. In Taiwan the woman controls the money. Plus first sister is responsible for family if the parents die. I learned that Chinese and Taiwanese have similarities but the difference in relationships oftentimes is the region in which they live. The family is soook important similar to Central America or South America. Its quite nice. Ive never heard of a wedding that cheap in China or Taiwan. One reason foreigners don't marry Chinese women is because of the family requirements upon marriage. Up to two houses, one minimum and oftentimes a car purchase with large red envelope (borderline dowry) to the parents of the daughter (wife). Unless the girl is from the countryside or super poor family. This is what you will encounter in all cities. Plus in China you can't have dual citizenship. Its one or the other, whereas Taiwan you can get an APRC Alien Permanent Residence Card. Im happy for him. I'm considering going next month to Da Nang for 2 months. It should be interesting.
This is an amazing video. A really great interview to show us some cultural differences. This is actually weird because I was actually searching about this topic on internet a couple of days ago after I read something about you having to ask a girl out in Vietnam 3 times before she accepts. And I'm very happy that I understood some spare Vietnamese words during the conversation hahaha I've found a Vietnamese textbook on the internet that I'm using to learn and there's a girl I've met that helps me a lot with it. She doesn't speak English very well but tries very hard to always answer my questions and even sends me audios to teach me how I should pronounce somethings (which is very cute and nice of her). Loved the video. Keep it up Van!
Can you make a video of a Vietnamese boy who married a western girl? Videos between Vietnamese women with foreign men are quite common. I want to know the opinion of western women when they date Vietnamese men
Id date someone like you 🙂, and kudos to the other guy cuz we need more people like him..i honestly like different languages and if i got myself a gf that speak a different language i would like to learn it
I stumbled to this channel, and I find it very interesting. I grew up in Hawaii, had vietnamese friends in grade school and high school. After I completed my career with the US Army, I have been traveling to different countries via air, cruises, buses, train. I’ve been to 61-countries and 64-cruises. However, I’ve only been to Saigon for a day while cruise ship docked there. I plan to visit again in the future and stay longer. Are there good public transportation (train, bus) like Europe, Japan, etc? What’s the best month to travel there in Vietnam?
Sorry, but "happy wife, happy life" is the biggest simp move you can do. Set boundries early on to avoid this. Men stay on your path, your mission/goals, and get your priorities straight. The order of importance in your life should be: 1. Yourself, health, hobbies 2. Career/job 3. family 4. wife/girlfriend. If you put your wife/girlfriend at the top she will lose respect for you. This is how divorce happens, no matter the culture. That is bad advice from him. Other than that, good video.
