Some many people want the cheapest items they can get and it's just not substantible. These items generally just don't last and end up in the landfill. When you buy something, make sure it's quality and built to last.

Mine too. The percentage is probably 85% for me. If what I need is so specialized/unique whatever that I can't find it preowned, it usually means it has to be ordered custom made anyway. When we renovated our kitchen the lantern style lights were newer and only the more expensive brands carried them. Plus I needed 3 and it's difficult to find three of anything. So I ordered them bespoke from an American manufacturer. All the other lighting in my house is high end bargains. I figured what I saved there makes up for the expensive of buying new, but it hurt to pay retail. My eat in kitchen banquette had to be an exact width to fit my bay window. Nothing I found preowned (or new even)was nearly wide enough, so I had to custom ordered from NC. Once I walked into a fancy store in Williamsburg and fell in love with a mirror and said, "One day" and some 15 years later I saw it on CL. The seller could see how excited I was and wouldn't budge on price. I have it in my bedroom. I love bargains and decorating.

@pippadawg7037 I love the uniqueness it seems like your home has😊 My home 🏡 is very old & used to be a barn & all of the homes on the same side of my street were at one point part of the land but was sold off over the year's. We've filled it with antique furniture from estate sales. My husband found our home but knew I could do something special with it & we made an offer soon as we walked in. We always get compliments because the outside doesn't compare to the inside. The all exposed brick fireplace wall, beams on the ceiling, & actual man cave❤ We're passing it down to our children, never selling it😊❤️🩷🧡💛💚💙🩵💜🤎

I love feed and wax too, but the only thing to remember when you use it, is that if you think you might want to change the stain or tone of the wood color down the line, the wax is very difficult to penetrate. So, if you ever want to change anything about the color of the wood, you have to basically sand the entire piece in order to remove the wax. Just a good thing to know. 😊

Mineral spirits will take off the wax without having to sand it down.

Or, use Howard Restor a Finish. It's not as perfect as actually stripping refinishing, but it's also a lot less work. You end up with something that looks much nicer (makes scratches less noticeable and takes away water rings)
@pippadawg7037
@pippadawg7037 9 месяцев назад
@@bfranklin1052 Floor refinishers would beg to differ. They hate it when you have waxed the floors and wouldn't agree the wax can be removed with mineral spirits either. So really think long and hard before waxing a hardwood floor. If you know you would never refinish and the color is absolutely perfect for you forever, go for it. Sometimes a wood floor has already been sanded a few times and doesn't even have another sand job in it so by all means wax. The English don't change floor colors as often as Americans and they are huge on waxing the hardwoods. But Americans are always deciding the floors are too warm or too cool or too dark or too light so just know waxing is going to cost you when you go to change them up.

I’m at a complete disconnect from most of your suggestions because a $500 chair you consider a great deal and that would be my entire budget for my entire large apartment. Not all of us have that kind of money to drop on vintage and antiques, etc. I did however, on your recommendation get some feed and wax and that stuff is brilliant. You are completely my favourite decorator and designer. I love your stuff.

Vintage is the way to go! Definitely set your Facebook marketplace location to rich areas for when seniors are looking to downsize. I managed to score these antique teak art deco dining chairs for $20 each. The old lady was telling me that her father bought the dining set in 1917 which would make these chairs over a century old, but they look brand new!

Hey Drew, I wanted to share something with you about that stuff you use on the wood. If you use a paint brush specifically made for chaulk paint, there's a larger one with a pointed tip you'll not use as much product as it will be on the brush & not a cloth it's easier to get into the areas that fingers can't. Store the brush in a zip lock for next project & it's ready to go .

I have used the feed and wax for years. If you have an ornate section on a piece of furniture use a stencil brush to push the product into the intricate areas. I also have used it on my cast iron bistro table on my back porch. It darkens the black and gives it a little protection from the elements. Great product.

Old English works the same I think as Feed -n-wax but without the wax. I go through so much Old English but it keeps antique woods so moisturized and makes then last.

Watching your channel has inspired me to experiment. I find I really like mixing up my furniture. I have vintage pieces (dresser, sleigh bed, dining table, upholstered chair, desk, ceramic vases) mixed with contemporary pieces and love the look. I also have a few antiques - a nightstand (originally a side table) made in 1849 and a large ceramic bowl (originally my grandmother’s) that was made in 1920.

Drew, I am SO loving your home! You are my #1 favorite RU-vidr! I follow some design gurus (including Arvin Olano), a couple of fashion RU-vidrs, several travel experts, and a couple of perfume reviewers. Yours is the only one that I'm counting down the days until your next video, and I DEFINITELY notice when you're "late". lol. I literally don't notice that with any other RU-vidr. At any rate, I came here to say THANK YOU for explaining about lighting. As a designer and lighting specialist, lighting is about the only thing that I will tell people "no, you can't have that" if they try to go below 2700K or above 3000K (K stands for "Kelvin") for residential purposes. The sad thing is that most big box stores tend to carry HORRID lighting in the 4000K-5000K lighting, marketing it as "Daylight". I'm not quite sure why that is, but they are so blue that they wash the color out of everything in your house, including the humans! You spend so much time and money curating a perfectly beautiful home and then, BAM, you throw it all away with the selection of your light bulbs. So sad. To clear up another misconception, a higher Kelvin temperature does not equal a brighter lightbulb. It has to do with color only. Let's go back to choosing those warmer tones to make your house feel cozier and less cold. Even with grey tones in your home (perhaps ESPECIALLY with grey tones in your home) you have to add in some warmer elements or you'll wind up feeling like you're living in a cold and sterile environment. Thank you. Rant over. :)

Love your design style and tips! This is such a great channel! ❤ I will add a quick one of my own. You can also, (inexpensively) revive tired, dry wood pieces with a mixture of two parts olive oil and one part white vinegar. (Can also add a drop or two of your favorite scent of essential oil) You don't need much. Mix it well, rub it on, let it sit and soak in for a few minutes, then buff it out well with an old T Shirt. I have done this for years and have never had a problem with smell or rancidity. If you are nervous about trying it, do it on a test section first. Furniture looks amazing when finished!

While I love that you promote buying second hand and vintage, you still spend WAY more than most of us could ever afford. For me, thrifted means less than $10, maximum $20. But then you add $500 worth of brass handles, or spend $2000 on marble backsplashes, or recover a thrifted chair with $300 fabric and a lot of us just can't relate. You used to do such great diy projects that looked amazing and were really cheap. I don't expect you to spend less for your own house, but maybe you could still throw in a few diy videos for those of us that have to count the pennies?

He still does really great DIYs, he just did a mushroom lamp recently. His budget is vastly wider than mine but he’s shown us how to improve our spaces on a budget and it’s okay that he’s branching out and spending a little more now. He doesn’t throw it in anyone’s face and still encourages everyone to act according to their budget. I typically don’t defend people but Drew’s mentioned anxiety over expressing real costs when he splurges on items and he is a real deal designer now. Everything doesn’t have to be thrifted or diy’d. its okay to save up and splurge on timeless pieces that will last.

@@georginaadams4826 💚 it just makes me so sad to see comments like these. Believe me, I get it. I want to create grand items for pennies but that’s just not realistic, especially in this economy. Thrifting has shifted drastically since 2020 now that so many people have decided to become full time resellers/furniture flippers. And he should feel free to splurge in his home too. I just wish more people would be slower to anger over these things. Under $500 is still inexpensive for great furniture. Especially now.
