The part on finding something interesting is so important in more ways than one. If I can justify why I want to take a particular photo I feel more confident about taking the shot. In this situation, if someone asks me why I am pointing a camera at them, I can quickly explain myself verbally and visually with a clear explanation.

I like the idea of having a camera in my pocket. So, now I'm off to buy more gear. LOL

When I shoot street, I mainly use a Pentax MX or ME, if I want aperture priority. Equipped either with a 28mm lens or a 100mm. What I like about the latter is the possibility to isolate objects or people in the frame from their background due to the shallow depth of field when shooting at f 5.6 or below. I have even used 200 or 300mm lenses, but that is a completely different approach. Interesting, indeed, but utterly different. Thanks very much for your tips... 🙂

Hi Brian, lovely documentary! I was in the library last week and got your 52 assignments book in Dublin but only realised it was yourself from the documentaries on RU-vid.I like your informative and relaxed style.I use a Rolleiflex camera and Fujifilm plus a Bolex for cine film. I took a picture today and the people I snapped were not pleased with me being there! They all looked so colourful.

Great video, I agree with pretty much everything said here. I think that depending on the situation eye contact and a connection can lead you to better follow-up photos. I have had moments where I find a scene that I like, old fishermen for example, and then I’ve spent two hours with them photographing them work. I also think that less gear is more, and tend to take 2 lenses and sometimes 3 with me. But, whenever you have more than one lens with you, it always seems like you have the “wrong” one on the camera.

I use a 8.1 megapixel Ricoh gr digital camera from 2006. 5.9mm f2. 4 lens. A really tiny camera with an incredible fixed 28mm equivalent lens. I shoot in black and white all the time.

The thing that has slowed me down, made me think and focus (no pun) more on what I am taking a picture of, is going over to film. 35mm specifically for me on a Canon 1V. This gives me some "modern" ways I am used to using my R and R6 but still slows me down a lot. Also knowing I only have 24 to 36 shots in the camera is really sharpening my concentration on the subject. Great fun learning and thank you for the tips.

I grew up with Leica RF cameras in the house, and I followed my Dad in that direction when I grew up. But when we went digital I ended up with a Canon APSC camera that I use with a 24mm pancake lens. Its a surprisingly compact set up and it means I have only one camera - I just change lenses when I am doing other forms of photography.

Hi Brian, Another great video. Couldn’t agree with you more on photo clubs. I belong to one, I don’t enter many competitions due to the reasons you mentioned. Fine by me because I take photos for me not to win competitions. 😀

Starting projects is a great suggestion. You can photograph everything when you are on the streets, but that excess of choice can paralyze those who are looking to do street photography. I didn't realize until now that I am often paralyzed by choice. I'll definitely be starting up projects!

For a street photography camera. I use the Fuji X100 and Leica 109. In film, I use the Rollei 35 with its 40mm lens and the Leica IIIf with the Elmar 50mm lens. In street photography I never use a large camera, and never use TLR, they are too large and odd looking nowadays for street photography.

Would love a link to the photo book, as it is even more affordable than the excellent range of small photo books I currently make. Since I combine photos in my books from both the phone and the camera , I transfer all the images to the phone and edit in Snapseed . It creates an easy workflow and you will be amazed at how attractive those final images look. Most of my photos end up in monochrome, although , a few get left in colour . It is always subjective decision . I also have the camera set up to view and shoot in black and white with a turn of the dial . I also favour P option , as it allows for all the adjustments I need at a turn of a wheel . I agree with keeping your kit small . I can remember the days of carrying heavy bags and now I carry just a Billingham Digital and that is big enough for one body and a couple of small lenses . You have put together a very interesting video and I enjoyed watching it very much. Some of my most interesting images have come from coffee shops . If I shared them with you I am sure you would not consider them boring ha ha. It is always about telling a story and drawing the viewer in to share that golden moment . Needless to say, the hit rate , least on my standards , results in many deleted images that do make the cut. Thank you for sharing .

X100W might finally come with the manual focus scale. Normal one, not Leica Q's infinity and two meters just next to it :) I took X100V to my eye in the store and in regular view focus scale was too small for me in VF. How could you zone focus between close, middle and far distances with X100V? I can't find any info about it. I mean, instant zone focus with 35mm lens, not fixed focus of 28mm and wider.

I had a look at one of my print suppliers and they were doing A5 16 pages at £142 for 100 copies. Here is the link www.stressfreeprint.co.uk/shop/best-sellers/brochures-booklets/stapled-brochures-booklets/a5-landscape-brochures-and-booklets.html You could probably use Canva to do the design.

I understand that as a professional Fuji ambassador you have to promote Fuji cameras. I’m a Fuji lover too (X-T3 plus many lenses) but the camera I always have on me is my iPhone 11 max. It has 3 lenses built in, is easy to adjust brightness and focus, is light and fits in a shirt pocket. Thanks very much for the tips, some of these are usable in other photo genres too.

For 300,- it is great. I bought it for 700,- and it is one of the few items I gave back. The autofocus is really bad. I prefer the Ricoh GR III by far. But again: for 300;- it is great.

A large majority of photos from the past by famous street photographers do not fit your definition of “interesting”. They’re only viewed as interesting today because of nostalgia. What you’re talking about are photos that show how clever the photographer is. Some find that interesting, some don’t.
