I hadn’t read books consistently in a long time. I got into comics to just get used to it, anytime I’d tried to read I’d just fall asleep or get distracted. After reading comics for awhile I tried books again and am hooked. I always read on lunch breaks at work and listen to audiobooks all day while I work.
My biggest problem is reading is just one of so many hobbies I have. I want to read more but then I feel like I am not doing one of the other plethora of things I could do whether its video games, TV/movies, RPGs like D&D, or tabletop wargaming like Warhammer 40k. I wish I could give up sleep...or maybe my job. I spend so much time there when I could be reading. But alas...I need money for books (and food and my car payments and mortgage....but books!).
Great video. I recently had a similar conversation. Someone who said they wanted to read for pleasure, but had no time. I said the same thing. You have to make time, prioritize. I likened it to exercise. It’s easy to put it off until tomorrow, but if you really want to you will make time. I’m a huge reader, typically over 100 books a year, but a few years ago I found myself not reading as much or at all. I ended up changing several things, like choosing a time, setting goals, being more deliberate about what I want to do and what I actually do. this wouldn’t be for everyone, but I use an app on my phone that among other things will send me reminders. It can be too easy to say “oh don’t have time today, definitely tomorrow “ then to suddenly realize it’s been a week or a month. Plus once you establish the habit it becomes easier. A few years ago I discovered listening to audiobooks in the shower, though I do listen other times. I have an illness that makes showers long and painful so I was looking for a way to distract myself. I now have a shower only audiobook at all times that makes the whole ordeal easier. I’d have loved audiobooks as a kid. Lots of long car trips, but couldn’t read because I’d throw up.
New subscribers here! Really is so damn amazing how many people Brandon Sanderson Mistborn series got back into reading ! I used to read a lot as a kid, always read comics, the novel here and there but at almost 33 I got back into reading full time thanks to Sando mistborn era 1 trilogy so damn good ! I know it is same story for fellow book tubers Library of A Viking and Petrik!
Great tips Andrew, KUDOS! 😃👍 I especially resonated with schedule time for reading + fit it into your daily routine. Like you said: we schedule a lot of other stuff -- why not schedule time for reading too? 😊
Lately I was in a place where I could not finish reading book 3 of a series. It is a good book and the series flows very well. I don’t have a good explanation but after listening to your reading tips which you provided, I am once again moving forward! Thanks! Btw, you always have great reading content!🥰📚💞
Oh my God, I'm enjoying your book SO much! Got to admit, it's taken me by surprise. I've literally paused reading The Will of The Many to finish it. Think we can all agree, that's high praise indeed!
haven’t done much reading pass 2 years because of school, graduation can’t come soon enough. Been binge reading a cultivation light novel lately which has been fun but it takes me away from my studies which isn’t good but keep me sane. Hope to not forget my love for fantasy books these next 2 years
As much as I dislike Amazon I do love Audible. Without Audible I would not have listened/read to as many books as I have to date. I also got a lot of listening in when mu job went from days to overnights during covid. I got through all of the A Song of Ice and Fire books quickly. Also a great narrator can make a book fun to listen to. Jim Dale really makes the Potter books better.
My recent DNF is “a natural history of dragons by Marie Brennan. It started so well. I was absolutely loving it. And then it just ran out of steam…. Abouibt half way I started to notice that I wasn’t reading about anything. A lot of character work and narrative was well set in the fist third of the book and then for the rest of what i read, nothing of worth happened. The writer even teases something about to happen about 3-4 times, where you finally stat to get excited about what you are reading and then within a sentence, nothing. Nothing happened, it was a faux lead. The character doesn’t grow for an extraordinary part of the book. I just got bored
I think a big problem is that readers are slowly getting stupider, and willfully make bad book choice and then bail out of book if they don't like it (AKA: "it's too hard".). Stupid readers breed stupid writers, etc. etc. vicious circle.
