Hi lovely RU-vid friends. I hope you are all really well. What are your favourite hacks to look classy and expensive? And do you even want to?! Lots of love. Deirdre. XX
First of all, great video. Wearing monochromatic colours really elevates the look. My tip is to wear good quality underwear, particularly bras. They make clothes look better.
Ohhh I absolutely want to look classy and expensive!!! 🙋 My #1 tip NEVER EVER use profanity! It immediately pegs you in as "trashy" #2 tip SHOWING KINDNESS especially to sales associates and wait staff
I really enjoy your channel, Deirdre! I try to take your ideas and do them on the cheap. I do a LOT of resale/thrift store shopping. So I'm looking for silk, linen, merino wool, wool and cashmere for that "expensive look" on the cheap. My go-to for elegance is black with an accent, say a scarf. I NEVER spend big bucks on purses. i try to find good purses on the cheap. And if I can, the same with shoes. I never skimp on underwear or socks. Wearing earrings as yo have nicely finishes an outft and takes it up a notch! I'm a professional singer so for me to look chic and elegant, I might wear black pants, a solid, darker color top (royal, purple, red, erc.) and one piece of statement jewelry which people IMMEDIATELY notice and say how eleagnt I look. For my niece's wedding I wore black head to toe with fascinator hat and a fuschia duster. I gottons of comliments; even my brother said how elegant I looked.
Love your style tips! I’m in my 80’s and still love fashion! I can adapt most of your tips with shopping my closet, but I do like shopping a bit for just aa few seasonal looks!
Good advice Deirdre. Monochrome outfits always look very expensive to me. It's true about patterns making you look cheaper. I use to wear patterns often, in fact, looking back at older vacation pictures I wonder "omg what was I wearing" and I cringe. Now that I only wear stripes or polka dot prints I look much classier and expensive. The tips about the minimal jewelry and sunglasses are ones I abide by also. Keep the good content coming.
Dear Deirdre, great video, I loved all your tips! You're absolutely right - monochromatic looks, neutral solid colors and sunglasses can do wonders. I wear glasses but I can't wear contact lenses. Two years ago I finally decided to buy a pair of classic-looking prescription sunglasses. They weren't cheap but the made me look and feel fantastic! They were worth every single penny I spent. 😎😎 Looking forward to your next film!
I always have them for outdoors, originally to reduce glare when working outside as part of my career (geologist). But, in our very shiny, reflective cities I found that I need them most of the days anyway, here in sunny California. They double my Rx vision costs, but are so worth it, I feel more, not only comfortable, but more confident in them than my clear glasses. My last pair cost $800, ouch! And also as much again for the clear ones.🙂
It's sad that looking "expensive" is a goal. Why? Stylish, yes. Elegant, yes. But "expensive" suggests trying too hard to convince others of something you are not - otherwise you'd already be wearing "expensive", with no need to convince. It also equates money with personal worth. "I am better and will be thought of more highly if people think I wear expensive clothes". Shallow, somewhat egotistical and also reveals a host of personal insecurities. We should dress for ourselves; our own personal style that resonates within, rather than to attempt to con others about our wealth. Incidentally, those of genuine wealth wear subtly coded details in their dress that only their peer group cognoscenti will recognise. The tips shown here - whilst indeed of help if one wishes to perhaps be more stylish, will only signal that you're a "wannabe". Madame Chanel would cast a wry glance....
Oh, I am a pointed toe shoe girl and have been for years!! Nowadays flat due to neuropathy in my feet but they completely elevate the look of all types of jeans and pants. I have so many pairs of them and will always wear them as they just look so smart, even with casual pants.
A good bra too! The girls should never meet your bellybutton! 😂 Love your videos!! Perfect length, audio, with examples and great tips! And you are sooo pleasant!!
Really enjoy your styling tips & tricks. Especially ❤love the cream colored sweater you are wearing throughout the video. Do you have a link/info where to purchase? Thanks 😊
Hi Deirdre! Great video! I certainly enjoy these ones on the topic of looking 'expensive'!! I have so many of the items and just don't style them this way (but will now). I really love color too and would love your take on how to put together expensive looking outfits WITH color! Happy Valentines Day!!
Thanks so much, Celia. Colour can certainly work and look expensive. As I mentioned in my video, certain combinations look best as well as wearing colour in a monochrome or blended way. Happy Valentine's to you too . XX
Thank you for all the tips, Deirdre! I however have a small suggestion for you as well. By no means I am critisizing, but next time please try a v-neck or a deep scoop neck top with your outfits, it will look even more fabulous on you! Just noticed being middle aged woman myself that the turtlenecks, even mock ones do not look as good on us as they used to.
Agreed with all of these tips! I actually never thought of sunglasses as making you look expensive or elegant, I've always seen them as a necessity to protect your eyes! So, they're a double purpose!
Absolutely wonderful video! I always look forward to seeing your videos! I love all your tips, and I learn a lot from you. You're stunning and show these all so well. I'm in love with the third outfit, and the bag. I love structured bags and the trench coat. I also try to keep my hands/nails in good condition/moisturized and filed as well. Have a beautiful day!!! xoxo Oh, and the pink kimono is so luxurious! I love it!!
is it possible to buy that beautiful satin dressing gown Going into a new relationship at 75 wonderful but cant wear skimpy nightwear that would be wonderful keep it up babe wonderful videos can you do some more person able issues
I need advice on evening dresses for Christmas for us ladies who have a bit of a turkey neck and a podge in our tummy area. I also have an ample bust 36D and at 58 I don’t want to look aged…
I love your tips here. What I love about the “dressing expensively” look is the intentionality of it. This intentionality was out of style from the late 90s until the last few years, nothing could match, evenly roughly, or coordinate, and be considered creative or stylish. We now are again admiring put-together, polished style, but in my book it never “went out”. We had a US version of the What Not to Wear TV show during most of that period and I just couldn’t relate to a purple purse, lime green shoes, and baby blue or orange shoes on top of random clothes colors and patterns. (A lot of their other advice was good, though). I didn’t buy that many items during that period, except for functional things like leggings and tees, I never really liked anything, like the ubiquitous black catsuit with the oversized front zipper. The elements of an outfit should be styled to work together. I also love the lighter neutrals, like you. I rarely wear dark or bright colors.
can you suggest a brand of gold jewelrey that does not turn dark after wearing it several times? I have even bought jewlery at Nordstroms and still turns dark.
Another informative presentation as always❣ Many great tips that I'll try to adapt. Thank you❣ Unfortunately, although stylish, pointed toe shoes are very harmful to the nerves running between the foot's metatarsal bones especially as we get older. ( Morton's Neuroma ) In this case it doesn't pay to be stylish! 🤷♀️
Hi Que2. I think if you feel more comfortable, almond shaped shoes have the same sartorial effect. I did mention them actually and they do provide a good alternative with less squashing of the feet! I hope you agree. XX
I absolutely love your videos! Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and helping me look my best. I have learned a ton of new ideas which I am incorporating . Love it!
I wear navy in warmer months and black in colder months. My colors are ‘Fall’ and I look great in browns, greens, gold, rust, ivory and beige tones. U don’t wear white at my face. But white slacks are a great summer 2024 change and it is a bottom element. My skin is warm-toned and not cool. Turquoise colors I can wear and that and peach tone work well as ‘universal colors’ for all skin tones usually. I had my colors done years ago and have further researched this. But not every season do the manufactures make clothing in my color pallette. So I look for scarves and accessories which may add a punch of color to neutrals in my color range. This helps with my hair color and skin tone to put a scarf at the neckline. A great video!
Hi Deidre! Thank you for another great video. Id love to hear what not to do if you want to look elegant, classy or expensive. Do not wear too much makeup, do not carry or wear too many logos, if any, do not have fake nails, or bleach blonde hair, do not talk loud. Also any handbag thats too large ruins a classy outfit, and for us older women over 60, dressing too hip trying to look young ruins any chance of looking elegantly expensive.
Hi Deidre :). Thank you again for another lovely put together video . The sunglasses is a great tip .... it absolutely upgrades any outfit even in the winter . Any chance in future you could do a styling video on smart joggers which seem to be all in at the moment .... with spring arriving I think they are a good clothing option. Thank you xx
Hi so right we woman’s over 50 such as myself very important to have good posture. I 💕 how we RU-vidrs over 50’s 60’s have so many different styles. Me I love 💕 to dress and look sexy. 😊 thanks for sharing….
I fell in love with your videos. I'm learning a lot! I was wondering if there is any style advice for thick calves? I hate them. Feels like no skirt looks good on me. But I don't want to always wear jeans or trousers. Edit: I feel like many things depend on shoes, too, but can't wrap my head around it yet.
Hi there. I think maxi skirts are a great option in your case. Or a skirt which stops as your calf is thinning down towards your ankle. As you say, shoes can be key. With a maxi skirt, ballet flats work well or sandals for the summer, of course. A little heel would be great too. I hope this helps. Xx
Great tips thank you Deirdre, Most of which I've incorporated into my wardrobe, but unfortunately I wear glasses all the time, they are transitional, but do not look like sunglasses. x
Thank you Deirdre- appreciation from Wales 🙏🏻 I do a lot of what you recommend and loved the tips I didn’t know - thanks for being here, love Siân x x 💖
Thank you for your thoughtful blogs. I would love to see outfits that "stand on their own". Not all of us are in a situation where we carry a handbag, because we work or volunteer; handbags are kept locked away until we leave. I have beautiful handbags when I have a social event and will carry a bag for several hours. Many thanks.
Oh my gosh - we are SO on the same page! Your style is PERFECT! There’s just one thing you advise that I can’t do but love - the pointy toe with a feminine heel. My toes need space, and I walk with my feet out (it’s a hip/femur thing I’ve always had). On your taupe boots, to me, they’re perfect with those pants, but just need to be paired with a chunkier sweater for balance. 🙂
Well all can say is buy clothes that suite your age wen you get older stop trying to keep up with the trends Wear elegant like must have trench coat stay away from all black im 63 and i wear cream jumper with camel trousers and pair it up with a fake channel jacket
Hi Deidre. As usual fantastic tips. However could you please let us know what is the make and colour of the sweater you are wearing it is beautiful, I have been trying for weeks to find one similar, to no avail? Do hope you are feeling much better after recent your health scare!! Regards Maura.
I really enjoyed this video. I agree with pretty much all of your tips. I do wear quality trousers but not with front pleating. It looks great on you but doesn't flatter me. Stay well and look forward to seeing your next video 👏👍
Thanks for the advice. As a gal on a budget, I still want to look presentable at all times and these are ways to achieve that even on a budget. You look great and I love those wide leg pants!
Sometimes you just naturally look expansive I actually have try not to look expensive to not get over charged if I’m shopping where I know they might charge me more according to the way I look Lol But for the most part I love dressing up every day 👛💍👑👒👗👠
Hi! Thanks for the great video! I got a lot of great fashion tips! What lovely ideas! My mother loved clothes! Most of these tips I learned from her but I didn't know the reason for the structured bag! I have always thought they looked best but didn't know why! Thank you for explaining everything!
I don’t even consider anything in a synthetic fiber (poly, acrylic, etc.) or material (like plastic shoes). If it’s not a natural fiber or genuine leather, I skip over it until I find something I do love. (I do wear breathable, manmade, cellulosic fabrics like lyocell and rayon, they’re not plastics, but their quality can vary tremendously - the thin viscose used by fast-fashion brands doesn’t perform well or look high quality. Great video, Deirdre!
Brilliant video! Thank you so much, Dierdre. I also love the little uplifting touches in the background of your videos (like "Make Your Dreams Happen"). So much positivity! I had to laugh a little bit at the title of this video because I have never aspired to "look expensive", but I do aspire to "look professional", since I am a lawyer. I'm happy to say these tips work for that too! Thanks again!
Thanks Chris, for your lovely comments. I think "looking expensive" as such is a bit tongue in cheek. I prefer to think of looking our best, looking polished and, yes, looking professional if that's part of your life. XX
