De cluttering is key!!! Also, I know you mentioned to consider more cool tone colors, but and tips on warm tones in a small space?? I love soft yellows, sages and buttery colors...😅
I like all of your ideas but need help with decluttering. I really love that shelving unit with the barn door looking assembly on it. Where did you buy that?
I have a small bedroom and hung my curtains at the ceiling. It's so true, it makes the room look bigger and the space more monumental. Huge game changer.
If you use furniture with legs it also helps look more spacious, sofas on legs coffee tables with legs ect, you can always add them yourself so nothing bulky is “sitting” on the floor
Great tips! I've done all these. I prefer decorating with a monochromatic theme. I love textures and tones. I dont like little trinkets or clutter. It gives me anxiety. I like things clean, light and airy.
I take the screens off my windows in winter. Almost all of my windows open, but I don't have that many. 2 years ago in the fall, when I removed my screens to clean them, I noticed how much more light came in without them. I live in central Sask, so it's not like bugs are an issue in winter. So, now I leave them out. Makes a big difference!
Sometimes it's hard for those of us in🌡hotter climates to relate to those of you who long for the "light & bright," esp. if our places have N/W sun☀️exposure where we can truly bake♨️. If we don't have central air conditioning, a bit of darkness goes along way. We'll try black-out roller shades, blinds & curtains on top of each other to cool things off. At the very least it does a lot to help fool the senses. It will also help reduce energy costs too. If you own, UV protected skylights & solar tubes can often bring natural light without extra heat (or loss of privacy) too. 😉Screens are necessary bcos we have mosquitos, lizards, & other curious creatures in the hillsides of the greater LA area. 🦋
Hi Christina, I appreciate your efforts in providing ideas for others regarding decorating smaller spaces to give the appearance of a larger, more open area. I have to say I am fully on board with your suggestion regarding multi functioning furniture such as ottomans that have storage and can even do double duty as an impromptu coffee table or extra seating space; de-cluttering and leaving some "open" spaces here and there as well as including "vertical lines", even if that means something as simple as a tall floor lamp, or plant hanging down from the ceiling. And natural light is always a great bonus. I especially appreciate the fact that you pointed out the scale of the furniture could be either small and incorporating more pieces, or larger and simply using fewer pieces of furniture. So many decorators seem to be stuck on the "rule" that the only solution for a smaller space is to get smaller furniture, and that isn't always the best solution , as you mentioned yourself that larger pieces can look perfect... provided you have use fewer pieces rather than squeezing in more pieces than will comfortable fit the space. There are a couple things I disagree with regarding your suggestions. I have found from personal experience that all white, or even white with very light pastel colors do not make a room look any larger or more open. It will most certainly look lighter and brighter, but lighter and brighter is not the same as larger or more open. In fact, in my humble opinion, all white rooms look like an unfinished artists canvas to me, and the small little splashes of color here and there look out of place, as if they have just been thrown about haphazardly to add a little color to the blank canvas; they appear disjointed and unconnected to anything at all. Not that there is anything wrong with white walls, but (again, in my humble opinion) without some sort of accent color tying the room together, whether it's an accent wall, or curtains, or headboard or bedspread or even a large painting with colors coordinating with throw pillows or curtains or something, it just feels completely bland, like a rental with no personality. In fact, I much preferred the first picture of your bedroom with the gray walls and black headboard. It looked fresh and chic. Although I'm not particularly a person who finds "chic" to be their style of decorating, I still thought it look so much better than the bland all white room. But to each his own. I guess what I'm trying to say is simply that color in and of itself does not make a room look smaller or crowded. One other item I noticed... (you did ask for others opinions), although I entirely agree that curtains need to be hung closer to the ceiling, within 3 inches if possible, and reach all the way to the floor, it is important to "finish" the project by covering the bare wall that shows in the space between the top of the window and the top of the curtain rod, otherwise you have this odd, open chunk of wall that completely ruins the illusion a taller ceiling. There are many styles of simple, casual or semi-casual swags or patterns for adding to your curtain rod to hang down and cover that glaringly odd section of wall bare wall between the top of the window and the curtain rod that will give the window a finished look and provide that illusion of a higher ceiling. Just my 2 cents.
I love the idea of hanging curtains higher. Wonder if you could possibly do a video on choosing curtain colors (with different color furniture), what hardware to buy,, and how to install. ie: do you need to nail into a stud? I’m clueless LOL!
I fully agree with you with these smaller spaces. My house is small and I got fed up with the overcrowded feeling. It felt like staying in a pawnshop. I got rid of all the extras and it made a huge difference. My little house feel like a castle lately. There is more than enough space now and I can breathe for a change. Thanks for the tips, they are very useful.
I'm currently taking an Interior Design Technology diploma program... and nothing relaxes me more than watching Christina's videos. Love this channel so much
Empty surfaces definitely make areas look more spacious . They also make decorations & statement pieces more noticeable & special even when using less . You are spot on . I Love your work soft cozy spacious loveliness. I love pink white shabby chic farmhouse meets a little funky .5 girls I can get away with anything pink & I love it .
Love all of these tips! We've got a very 70s house with a lot of low bulkheads, so verticality and high drapes have been really useful in making our space feel bigger and brighter. Also love your recommendation for multi-functional furniture. Really keeps things simplified, and makes me feel like I'm maximizing the space we have and being very clever haha. Love the video!
You did a great job in your home Christina! I so admire the wall cabinet you installed in the entry. White does work to open up spaces and great if have windows to lend much needed light. I personally don't have enough natural light to come in where I live, and being I'm an artist, my walls are painted in many colors. Which ... is quite unique in its own! Good tips. Enjoy your day! 😍
I completely agree about having lighter rooms. I will be painting a room this spring to lighten up my office space. I'm sure it is going to make a huge difference.
I love how you redecorated your 5th Wheel. We live in a 5th Wheel. I want to redo our RV, especially the floors. At present, there is carpet in the living/dining area. I bought fairly nice drapes and curtains and thought I’d really be smart and use heave duty Velcro to hang them so that I would not have to drill holes in the walls. I tried Tension rods. I cannot get one long enough, that will keep enough tension to keep it up over the large window behind our sofa. We are planning to move the RV soon, and once it is settled in the setup, I plan to remove the Velcro, purchase real curtain rods, and drill the holes to hang my curtains securely. I like what you said about hanging your curtains. And I did the same with mine when I hung them. Did you remove the built in valances from the windows in your RV? I did not remove ours. I felt I could cover the with the curtains, and take advantage of their placement to help keep cold and hot air out, to help with temp control on the inside of the RV. I am a novice, So my opinions are not very valid. I do like the brightness of the living area in you RV. Although I like the bright white, and I am tired of brown “oak cabinetry”, I still like the rustic feel of our RV. I do not like the board with the wall paper. I want to paint over it. Is that a viable practical solution?
Can I suggest a few things? I had the same problem- so painted the walls etc white, got rid of dark carpet- polished light floorboards with light coloured rug, removed dark and heavy furniture, and used more sheer type curtains. Lighting is also critical-
I have a huge filling every space thing myself... I am supposed to be having a cleaning weekend but I am totally unmotivated so it will probably be pushed into next weekend as well
Why not start by taking away the clutter, using the Marie Kondo technique, first. You’ll feel so much better after and cleaning will be much more easy 😄
I have 8-foot ceilings how do I know what size curtain to buy? Because the 96 would drape on the floor I know some people like that I have cats I don't think it would work for me. But the other size is 84 which would be way too short if you came down even just two inches from the ceiling. I'm confused.
I like to use monochromatic color with whites and pale beige theme w different knobby textures in turqoise or dark brown. Looks soft, calming, and sort of coastal. Love the curtain idea also..will try. Just found your video, hut already love you. The rv looks great!
My dads in the process of painting my walls white and I’ve found a white bed and bedside tables to go in it and I’m looking at a silver/grey carpet. I have a walk in closet so I don’t need to buy one. I like the Idea of having space under the bed and bedside tables because it gives the illusion of a bigger room and there’s less space to hide clutter
I’m moving next week and I purchased all gray furniture and I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel, I’m going to try my best to use these tips and thanks so much for the inspiration 💕
You gave me a lot of great tips for decorating ideas. My home is an open-concept and a lot of these will help I like knickknacks as well.I have a lot of clutter due to this.Thank you for doing this it was a big help.
My husband and I live in a 5th wheel. We are in the process of renovating and your video has given me some great ideas. I even made my husband watch so he could see for himself what works. Thank you so much.
I really like the wall idea! I rent an apartment and have been trying to think of what I can do to bring more white in without losing some of the color that is already there.
All your tips are great, but I think I will start with hanging my curtains higher then on to decluttering ☺️. Now that might take me awhile😏 thanks for sharing Christine, stay safe ❤️
awesome ideas!! I really like decor items and knickknacks. to keep clutter at bay, I use bookcases or shelving to house most of my items. this frees up table tops and other surfaces, but j can still see all my items. painting the entire upstairs some shade of white/cream over the holidays💗💗💗
These were great tips Christina. For me what I find helps is light color of furniture. And recently I've been collecting Vintage Mirrors. What a transformation it has made!! I'm a firm believer in mirrors now. Lol 😂. I hang my drapes high. But I like my knick knacks. Lol. 😂 So that I have no desire to change. 😊
After seeing the glimpse of the work you did on your brother's home, I want to watch that video again. I don't have much decorating skill, so I greatly enjoy all of your videos. I'm going to hunt through your videos to see if you have one about the bathroom in a house, saw the one in your first RV, but wonder how you would approach one in a home. I also am interested in comments others made below regarding the barn door storage unit and the request for details on hanging drapes. Thank you for all you do, you have the best DIY/decor videos on RU-vid!
Clever girl! Very useful pointers, thank you. The curtains being higher will be a game changer- sadly it was actually the curtain measures who used to recommend them on the window frames - so glad we’ve broken the mold.
I loved this video! So very informative and helpful! I especially appreciate the tip to hang drapes higher... It's so simple I'm a bit annoyed at myself for not thinking about that myself, haha.
New to this channel, I like it! One thing I did for my extremely small bathroom was buy regular living room curtains with a horizontal stripe plus long enough so I could hang them high like you would your other curtains. The stripe and the height "create space", they are linen like material, nice and light/airy. Also glass tables in a small space are great, I have a small living room so have a small round glass coffee table with beautiful cherry wood legs (MCM style) that doesn't take up visual space like heavy wood or fabric style bench/tables. Thanks for all your tips, love the inside of the RV with those beautiful pink chairs!
Thank you for sharing these wonderful tips with us. We just painted our living room a really light gray from Wal-Mart called Silverado and it completely transformed our space.
What color did you use in your bedroom that was light grey, almost white? Also in the clip in the dining room where you hang a circular mirror, what do you have on the walls? Looks like short plank shiplap maybe? It's very pretty and unique!
Any tips for hanging drapes, when your windows go all the way up to the ceiling? The only area is the trim around the window, but no wall room above the window, or on one side. Thanks
How about attaching a rod, pipes, or track the length of the window from the ceiling? Search ceiling curtain rods or tracks. There are plenty of options. •Need more affordable curtains? Try drop cloths. You can easily dye them. •If you use the rings with clips, that may will help reduce your panel length a bit too. Also makes it easier to open & close. Good luck☘!
Hi! I love your videos. This is one of my favorites. Please make more videos like these on how to make your small space look bigger. The condo where I live is about 570 sq. ft and the bedroom is small and I'm having a big on what kind of study table I could squeeze. I have more questions and would love to seek your advice, do you give free advice?
Hi I love your ideas, soo practical. I am starting a sm business in Interior Decorating and styling and you gave me ideas I had not thought of, ie the analogous colours or monochromatic only. Thank you, Sue Gosford, Australia :):)
@@thediymommy does this method of hanging drapes a few inches below the ceiling work even if your window trim is wood? All the curtain installation videos I watch show the window trim painted white.
Wow! So beautiful! I hope I’m able To make my home look that nice for me and my kids. We live in a studio which my boyfriend had to make our porch into a room for us. Landlord don’t care how we be living which puts me in a hard position since it’s really hard to even find housing where I live :(
