When I was a child of age's 1 to 2 back in the 1990's, one of my aunt's suggested to my mother, that I be sent to one of those hospitals. Thankfully my mother, who is a loving mother, had heard the stories about what was going on in those hospitals and straight up refused her sisters suggestion.

It's just that some families thought they weren't capable of taking care of them and where doing the right thing for them by sending them to these places, others just didn't care of them or didn't want be seen with them, so they just straight up abandoned them at these places.😢

Byberry was up the road from me where I lived in Philly. After it closed, it became infamous for being haunted and people (mostly highschoolers) would trespass the dilapidated building to film inside. They finally tore it down ages ago before anyone got hurt.

@@MikeyBats I was in ESSH in 1987-88 for six months. What a twisted place it was. Seems like Pennsylvania built a lot of hospitals in the Bensalem/Trevose area. It's funny to see that my old haunt became a shopping mall! I think it's like Horizon mall or something. Thank you for your reply man:)

@@Xenogears76 Byberry was on the boarder line of Philly and Bensalem..there’s also Friends hospital in Bensalem that’s a mental/addiction treatment facility..back in the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s Friends hospital was a place where you got sent if you were either having a nervous breakdown or if a person was “flipping out” and a family member called the police it was called being 302’ed…

I live right around the corner from the old Bayberry Hospital..believe it or not, one of the buildings is still up and being used as a housing program for recovering drug and alcohol addicts…There are actual underground tunnels on the property that kids used to explore and stuff..the stuff we would find and see was crazy…When the finally did shut down the hospital, they just opened the doors and let the patients go, seriously..surrounding neighborhoods were flooded with ex-patients with all kinds of mental illnesses being homeless

As a person with a disability I'm so grateful to MOJO for shedding light on this dark chapter in history. Note how recently they were closed right here in the US. Terrifying that I likely would have been sent here, too.

When studying for my psychology, my professors were honest about the terrible history of abuse and neglect in psychiatric hospitals and the harm that has been done under the guise of psychiatric care. It is disturbing to consider how many people were lobotomized, sterilized, and subjected to horrifying treatment.

That is said the same when some patients didn’t have any mental illnesses to begin with. It’s also a good thing that real, loving families are being open minded about their children’s neurodiversity and NOT choosing insane asylums for the last resort

There are still many places in the world where parents abandon their kids or give them up for adoption because they have a disability. It's so sad.

The Ridges is absolutely beautiful. I lived in Athens for a year and hiked around the grounds every weekend. Ohio University is considering converting the buildings into housing for grad students and underprivileged Athens residents

How have I lived for 26 years in Massachusetts and was born in Salem and know it’s macabre history, but didn’t realize that Danvers State Hospital is like a 26 minute ride from my home?!!!! I’m pretty sure I drove by there several times and didn’t think nothing of it. Oooohhh boy!!!😟

The hospital site is basically invisible from the surrounding roads. There's a ring of trees all the way around it, so the only time you really have a chance of glimpsing anything without going in is during the winter. If you do go in most of the buildings are new, built in/after 2006, but the original central building is still there.

I have lived near and around Weston State Hospital, now Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum my entire life. It’s a permanent stain on our town, and now used for ghost hunts and a haunted house-that I find highly offensive to the patients who were treated there. But let me tell you, that building is evil. I’m not the type to believe in the paranormal but something is not right about that hospital. You couldn’t pay me to go inside the main building, even being on the grounds is unsettling.

I clicked on this video immediately thinking of Byberry in philly, and here it's the first one mentioned. I've been on the grounds years ago when it was vacant and the vibe is disturbing. Also knew an older gentleman who worked there when he was young. He had some stories but when he was asked to go in the tunnels to change light bulbs, knowing some patients escaped down there, and heard cackling in the dark he was out of there and never returned! So sad for everyone involved in that place.

Sadly the Federico Mora Hospital Nacional, still exists. In Guatemala those who are mentally ill aren't taken care of. The guards are extremely corrupt and the hospital is hella filthy. I feel extremely bad for those patients who are currently in this hell hole. Nobody should endure this type of treatment.

Willowbrook in NY is not on here. It was a huge story in the 70s and started the closing of all State Hospitals around the country. Geraldo Rivera did the story back when he was a real reporter.

Was wondering if Danvers State hospital was on here, i found out about it wanting to do research on my hometown...never thought of asking my dad about it especially when my older brother is born in Danvers but I was born in Beverly a month before the whole campus shut down.

I watched this just to make sure Danvers was on the list. Also it's worth mentioning that while most of the hospital was demolished the main building and central portion are still there.

Unfortunately, overcrowding still happens more than you'd think. The alternative (here in the US) is people waiting at an ER or somewhere even worse until a spot opens up. There must be a solution, and it NEEDS to be implemented

You forgot the only Indian insane asylum in the United States. The Canton Indian school. 400 Indigenous children were sent there for the specific purpose of unaliving to serve as a scare tactic for other indigenous children in any of the other over 300 Indian schools in the US. Carlyle being the most famous.

Bethlem today is a superb hospital. A relative of my wife had disabling OCD, couldn't even leave the house due to their resulting anxiety and the panic caused by their obsession. A 3 month voluntary admission virtually cured them - they're now married, working full time.

I agree. But I think it has something to do with looking down on people on their appearance, mindsets, lifestyles, and status. Those who belittle, don’t really know what another’s life is like and say they’re better than them. And besides, some say things because they show they’re jealous of another’s happiness. Going as far as gaslighting for more confrontations, even leading to fighting and making other people to see who’s the good and who’s the bad

The Weston State Hospital's situation was likely complicated by two types of people in political leadership - idiots and criminals (with the occasional idiotic criminal.) While political graft and corruption were not invented in West Virginia, it was often refined and reinvented.

Not surprised that most of the ones mentioned are in America. Maybe they should rename this list '10 Worst Real Life Hospitals in America' and move the ones not in America to a new list called '10 Worst Real Life Hospitals around the world'. I was hoping that some of the Asylums here in Australia would be mentioned, as they had the same sort of horrible treatments and stuff happen and are from similar time periods. Two of them in my state didn't shut until 1991 and one of them has colour video footage from a brave journalist, who went in there and did interviews with patients and staff. It's creepy stuff.

I worked at Allentown state hospital during the 1980s. Some of our staff were sent to byberry for a conference. We considered ourselves tough, hardened nurses. Our nurses were just appalled at the conditions at byberry. Broken windows, mattresses on the lawn, abuse of residents, racism. Anything and everything did go on there. In the late 1980s the state decided to eliminate the cost of Allentown state by deliberately underfunding and understaffing it. That way when it couldn’t pass inspection they’d have an excuse to close it. In the midst of this effort they were unexpectedly forced to close byberry due to abuse and racism. The dregs of byberry ( those they couldn’t put out on the street) were sent to Allentown state. Then we couldn’t close. Then we had no staff to take care of these people. Then we had no money to hire any because when you can’t pass inspection you can’t qualify for federal reimbursement. It was a giant s-t sandwich and everybody had to take a bite. The mandatory overtime became so oppressive that more nurses quit. I saw it coming and left in 1987. I was told “ you be back. They all do”. I hope they’re not still waiting. Wendi RN

I had my daughter the year after leaving Allentown state. I wanted her a whole lot more than working for the state of Pennsylvania. I learned so much there. I was never sorry I worked there. And I was never sorry I left
