Lita spoke about Stephanie in her book. Steph actually wanted to go into full wrestling training and be a credible ompetitor, but each time anything came up that put her in the ring, Vince nixed the idea and made it more angle than match. This was 2000-2001 and stephanie worked Lita & Trish, both decent enough matches for the time, and wanted more physical action. Stephanies "ring work" showed promise and her character was amazing. Vince mcmahon at play yet again.
I think we'd have to know the full context to really know who is right. Stephanie was solid in the ring back then, she kept it simple and somewhat aggressive, nothing too fancy so she didn't screw anything up, and it worked. If Stephanie wanted real training to become a more frequent in ring competitor, Vince was wrong to do that. But if the "training" she wanted was to learn to do easily botchable high spots, then he might have been right to tell her to stick to the basics.
Probably the right decison. If she had her way shed have had undertaker like streak. Look at shane lmao cant gibe spoiled little rich kids roles of " badasses " in their dads company
Yeah, it was a weird year for him. He had the injury later in the year but mostly had to work with slow-moving ex-WCW guys. Booker was the standout but obviously, the poor outcome didn't help either.
2003 will always be nostalgic for me. Since the late 90s me and my childhood best friend would have sleep overs almost evedy week and watch raw and smackdown each week and record the ppvs on vhs so we could rewatch them countless times. By late 2003 we was in year 7 and slowly going our seperate ways about things. After survivor series 2003 which we recorded I dont think we ever watched another ppv again after that since his love for wrestling was gone shortly after
At least Tazz and Cole treated the Dawn/Torrie/Al storyline as seriously as they could. Unlike on Raw, they would have sensationalized the hell out of it and used it as titillation for Jerry Lawler.
From an entertainment perspective, not a problem at all. However, when speaking on driving storyline and overall narrative, it went off the rails quick, fast and in a hurry. Keep in mind, this was taking place while Smackdown was still being treated more as an extension of Raw and not its own entity. A ton of storyline suffered as a result.
He was the heel (see Hulk Hogan NWO, Ric Flair NWA, Nick Bockwinkel or Larry Zbyszko AWA, or Jeff Jarrett TNA. All examples of someone getting the time for promos in wrestling or hogging the spotlight as you say. Also whom in Raw could have been a better person to hold the belt and the spotlight? RVD? Goldberg? Test? Booker T? Y2J? Oh, I know Goldust. Lol Just because you didn't like him being on top or maybe you are one of those that thinks that Vince/Stephanie kept him there to spite us. Everyone else LEFT Rock, Austin, Hogan, and the list goes on. He along with Taker carried WWE for years.
@@CB-ci5ys In the attitude era, Triple H was still relatively young into his career, and he pretty much gave himself tenure for life with his brilliant mentality for being professional. He still had a lot more left in the tank so why wouldn't he consolidate his continued growth? Triple H and his apparent reign of terror is widespread internet bullying, end of.
This was HHH's longest title reign of his career, every great heel or babyface had a long title reign and this was his...Imagine if Booker T, RVD, Goldberg, Kane even HBK all became champion in 2003 then people would complain that the title was losing value/watered down.
Shane Vs Bischoff?! Literally one of my favourite ever matches ever with my absolute favourite heel turn ever. Coach's heel turn was genuinely shocking!! I will not accept this match on this list!
2003 was a really bad year for RAW Scott Steiner, Booker T, and Goldberg got absolutely buried, especially that moment with Triple H Booker T *Guy's like you don't get to be a world champion* SmackDown on the other hand had the higher ratings than RAW.
Feel bad for those who ordered the 2003 Royal rumble PPV not only did they had to suffer through Torrie vs Dawn (Though Cole and Tazz treated the storyline as seriously as they could) but they also had to watch Triple H vs "Beat Em Up" Scotty Steiner. At least it has (Redacted) vs Kurt Angle
Aside from Shane's punches. I've always enjoyed Shane in the ring, I'd consider him a sports entertainer. Rather than a wrestler, you could always expect a crazy spot from him.
No Mercy 2003 was first WWE Show I'd ever been to. I was 3 Years Old at the time. 20 Years Later, I'm 23 years old and I still remember watching a Vince vs Stephanie live
2003 was the year I started watching wrestling like every week. All started the Sunday night heat before wrestlemania. We were too broke to order ppvs and I wanted to see it after watching heat. I was hooked from there!
Triple H made Raw borderline unwatchable with his Reign of Terror. It was SO BORING!! Luckily Smackdown was very cool around that time. Seeing Vince booking himself with women young enough to be his daughter, is even more creepy given what we know about him these days.
Not only Eric kisses both the McMahon women (*luck*y... get it because the McMahon comes from an Irish famil- I'll stop) but Vince fought both of his kids. What a strange world we live in
2003 was the year I got into wrestling and I cannot agree with this list more. Maybe Id change the ordering but you literally mentioned every bad match I remember in my formative year of wrestling
The BEST/FUNNIEST thing about Vince vs. Stephanie's match was that the next Saturday was her WEDDING DAY!!!! Vince was told by Shane and Linda that it would be his ASS if he left a single mark on Steph. After the match he got into the back and told Linda "She doesn't have a mark on her." The storyline was a good storyline she is a good GM but not the type that Vince expected her to be (we got this when the Authority was around). Silly Adam always talking out of your bum.
Maybe it's just me, but I consider the Ruthless Aggression era to be an 'evolved' version of the Attitude Era. IE Better matches, better writing, and better sets.
Stephanie McMahon Vs Sable @ Vengeance 2003 and Torrie Wilson Vs Dawn Marie Royal Rumble 2003 were awesome matches that Era of Women's wrestling is iconic Triple H Vs Kevin nash inside Hell in a cell @ Bad Blood 2003 was awesome it was better than their Match at judgment day 2003 the only highlight of Triple H Vs Scott Steiner Royal Rumble 2003 was the promo package before the match and the fatal 4-way women's title match @ Judgement Day 2003 was amazing
I know “WWE ruined Goldberg” is the conventional wisdom, but WCW had already done that. Think about it, they took a guy who couldn’t work anything but five minute squashes and had zero mic skills, then said “let’s make him one of our top guys.” Then they not only gave him an undefeated streak, they started putting titles on him! Like, how do you book a guy who can basically only do one thing as your number one guy? Turns out the answer is to dress Scott Hall up as a security guard and give him a cattle prod.
Yeah, Piper’s also from an era where taking care of your health was a sign of weakness and not being strung out or drunk 20 hours a day made you the odd man out. Edge and AJ Styles have actually focused on their wellbeing and maintaining their bodies. Which, ironically, Piper’s generation mocks younger performers for and complains about. AJ Styles is in better shape at 46 years old than Piper was at 36. Hell, probably better shape than Piper was in at 26.
@@tyrone5969 Aj and edge used roids to get that way. Roddy just stopped caring . Nothing to do with bolder generation. I rather watch older wrestling than current. New wrestling is soft and pc as fkkk. So take ur soy boy as$ somewhere
Can't remember the exact timeline, but looking back was the Vince vs Stephanie match after the "alleged" storyline where he fathered her baby and she said "Er... No Dad, that's disgusting". Just a thought. Could be a bit of punishment on Vince's part and teach his, so called, daughter a very, very sick lesson on what happens when you say "No" to "Daddy"...???
Mr. America... Taking an angle done well in the territories and using all the sublety of a sledgehammer to the face. it's not like Hogan just changing the colors of his feather boas to red white and blue wasn't enough, he had to lift up his mask and wink at the camera.
Really starting to clutch at straws for content now. It’s only a matter of time until It’s Top 10 WWE house show attendances or most clotheslines in a match. RU-vid Wrestling channels have reached saturation point.
Watch Other Channels. What is it with people watching content just to bitch about it? Does it please you? Make you feel smarter? Stimulate you sexually? I genuinely don’t get it. If I don’t like the content a channel or creator makes I simply stop watching it. It’s literally that easy.
Take vs. A-Train & Show should replace the bar fight. The bar fight was a 4.5 minute bathroom break for most people. The handicap match was a painful 15 minutes.
Vince once pitched an inc*st storyline between himself and Stephanie To Stephanie...after she gracefully turned it down, he asked it it would be better if it was with her and Shane instead
Bro I remember A-Train absolutely demolishing Steph, I still get a chuckle out of it whenever I see it. I don't think Matt Bloom ever would hurt her, though. But it sure did look like he did lol.
Angle vs. Benoit saved the entire PPV. One of my favorite matches- PERIOD. Steiner vs. Triple H?... My friends and I were just kids like, "Ugh. This fcvk!ng sucks."
Why wouldn't they put Goldberg in longer matches? Obviously, when they signed him, both parties would have looked for a good relationship. Vince was looking for a guy he could depend on, not someone who needed several things to make stuff easy for him.
I kind of agree with you. Goldberg had 7 years of wrestling experience with him. He should have learnt how to put together a match but no. He never liked wrestling any way. So I never cared about HHH burying Bill.
Dude, Bischoff vs Shane was great stupid fun! Coach’s heel turn which subsequently resulted in Stone Cold stomping a colossal mud hole in him. JR and King were great too! This match shouldn’t be on this list.
Triple H vs Scott Steiner at the Royal Rumble is why I just don't buy into WWE burying WCW guys because in this match the crowd clearly turns on Steiner. Freakzilla came in like a house on fire and made Triple H look scared, the man was built up like a champion only to be felled by his decreased ability to preform at a high level. And for those wondering why they did a take two be a planned angle was Steiner ti challenge Triple H at the Royal Rumble and dominate The Game so badly that he would create Evolution stave off Steiner. The two would meet at No Way Out and Evolution would interfere enough that Triple H would retain. Steiner would damned one more title shot at Wrestlemania and Triple H would demand Steiner put his career on the line only for Steiner to come out victorious. If the last part sounded familiar it was recycled for Triple H vs Goldberg. But because Steiner and Triple H was so bad they subbed Steiner out for Booker T at Mania hence the 5 time WCW champion not doing too much in the fued let alone winning the match because he wasn't designed to be in the plans originally.
Hey wwe fanboy. Steiner was injured in both matches hence the reason for the bad matches. Wwe buried so many wcw and ecw guys. Look at what happened to sting
The reason why WWE put Goldberg in longer matches and "exposed his weaknesses" was to SHOW EVERYONE how inferior WCW talents were in comparison to even the most average members of the WWE roster 😄
It's funny. Scott Steiner throws out endless suplexes and he gets "Worst Match of The Year" talk. Brock Lesnar does it and he gets a gimmick and a bunch of T-Shirts. Maybe Steiner should have yelled "SUPLEX WORLD, WHORE!"
At least Vince ended getting his own karma though a month later when Undertaker destroyed him at Survivor Series. That Stephanie match was horribly hard to watch and it was all to write Stephanie off for her and Triple H’s wedding. Overall, This year was pretty average . It was very bad for Raw but Great for Smackdown. Triple H really had a bad year in 03.
