A young boy’s work has become a major draw. Joe Whale, 10, loves to doodle on any blank page he can find. But where others saw a habit, his parent saw talent. Now he’s got ten of thousands of fans. Ian Lee reports from Shrewsbury, England.

I can take in verbal information much better if I doodle while listing. I struggled a lot in school because I was forced to sit still and look into the eyes of my teacher. For me, it was a torture and all my energy was wasted to maintain the right body posture. No energy left to listen and learn 😩 It would be nice if schools and teachers embraced neurodiversity.

Bruh my English teacher called me out in class in front of everyone because of drawing because I didnt get my "work" done but I was the first to turn in my paper so that I could draw. She told me Art wouldnt get me anywhere and that I couldnt get anywhere withput English. Little did she know I went to Technical school and got my Associates Degree in Autobody and collision and now I paint and pinstripe custom cars. #beatthatenglishteacher

Nah. you have to finish school to get the basics in order to be successful in life. Learn math, to manage your bank account, learn English , to learn how to communicate well, etc... He can doodle in his free time. Plenty of time to pursue that dream.

He’s gonna be crushed when he realises that his drawing style has already been done many times before. People are only being nice. They are just simplistic kids drawings, and they won’t go anywhere unless he does something original, or actually high-quality. I think the parents are doing the right thing, and as long as the kids enjoying himself it’s fine. I’m a cup-half-empty kind of guy so this may just be how I see it, but I know the popular opinion is,” I WiSh i cOUld’vE dRaWn thiS wHEN I Was 10, hE’s sO gOoD”. I know that all opinions are subjective, especially on art, music, literature etc. but from someone who is looking for authenticity and quality, this wouldn’t rank very high. And I get that this could be a bit harsh because he’s just a 10 year old, but it does annoy me because his ideas are so generic but are being treated as revolutionary. This is by no means talent, nor is it skill, I would say mediocre for a 10 year old and absolutely nothing more.

@X X , I never said it was a sport I actually hate it when people try to compare their art to see whose art is better , because art is kinda like an escape root for me. I’m gust saying that this kid is overrated. Like how come I wasn’t on tv for dOoDLeiNg stuff that looked exactly like that? Life’s just not fair🤷‍♀️ but then again I already knew that. Hey, im sure your art is just as good. Try some different things to get your drawings out there. Maybe a deviantart if you don't have one already. Maybe a twitter, tumblr, insta, maybe even fb.

the result of supportive parents never ceases to amaze me. i always wonder how far i could go if my parents believed in me. i told my mom i wanted to be an artist and she told me i would end up being broke and its not a real career. i stopped doing creative stuff and convinced myself that i like helping people so i went to nursing school. i got severely depressed and couldnt pass my courses. now i'm thousands of dollars in debt and looking for minimum wage work where i can finally be creative again.

Me too. You’ll learn to perceive life in a different way-colors, shapes, light. Artists are bombarded by visual stimuli so people think we’re not all there. I was like you and when I grew up I became a professional artist. Keep up the good work!

don't let anybody tell you that art won't get you anywhere because they're lying. i'm making decent money off of my drawings and i'm sure that you can too. keep going and don't get discouraged, no matter what you're drawing. even if you're just doodling, that's perfectly fine. don't let anyone bring you down :)

I call this real talent. The word "doodle" makes it look like an easy thing to do, but it is not. And the fact that he uses permanent ink pen, that is something. Each stroke put down is definite and not tentative. That means there is spontaneonus translation of the idea from mental image to paper. And i love the fact that the parents are protective of him. They are not pushing him and marketing him out as a prodigy or something.
