A homeless man in a wheelchair lived in a park for 10 years. He recently got an apartment, and is now off the streets.
John, a veteran, talks about his life on the streets, and being homeless. He briefly discusses mental health problems, and other issues which led to his homelessness.
He also talks about some of the other homeless people he shared the park with, and some of the struggles he has panhandling.
One thing john repeatedly says is that he is very fortunate. He seems to keep a positive outlook on his life on the street.

Please continue to share real people's stories and these perspectives that most people don't see. And let's not all make each other feel better by watching this and having fluffy thoughts. If you felt something from Erik's video, DO something about it.

John is extremely articulate given his past addictions and long stretches of homelessness. While he might be struggling to adjust back to permanent housing I hope he continues to improve his life and spread the wisdom he's learned through the years.

Your country will send you out to fight, throw you away, then call the people you terrorize terrorists, and start the cycle again. Thank you for sharing John's story, I am sorry I made it political, I know there are more dimensions to it. I hope one day we can find the right way to help people like him instead of creating more circumstances that lead to similar fates.

Extremely enlighting video. One of the things that stood out was John having having to cope with a new life off the streets by having to not to fear and have the strength to relearn the "simple things" that most of us take for granted. Just think about this for a moment. How would you be able to cope with life if the world of "simple things" turned out to be your greatest fear and obstacle? Count your blessings that you never faced this challenge and think how you can share your good fortune with people like John.

“Im a veteran, i do have a guarenteed box when im dead” followed by genuine laughs has got to be one of the saddest things ive ever heard. This man deserves so much better than what this great country has given to him. Obviously i dont know his full story, drugs and all that, but still, even just as a human he deserves better and then to be a veteran on top of that…

Mental Illness is serious, drugs tend to be a form of self treatment and an escape from the homeless reality. I wish everyone well. He's stronger than I am.

If only people expressed more love and respect for this aged veteran, if only the government spent more time and resources on individuals in crisis than they actually do, a taxpayer and veteran deserves better. Thanks for this eye-opening insight Erik.

A lot of people just don't really get it when it comes to traumatic mental health issues. Even years of therapy, medication, treatment variations, etc sometimes don't help. Some people never get a chance to get that kind of help, and some people do. Some people get helped enough for long enough to the point they get treated like a liability and risk instead and now it's more detrimental against you. This all while you are vulnerable and one bad day or bad news away from things falling apart. The ability to be consistent mentally is such a key factor in being able to maintain a job and thus income. I say this not just for John but a lot of people that end up on the streets.

I thank you Erik K Swanson for your humanity of making a passing nobody into a living soul somebody, with a permanent place of rest inside our head! There by the grace of God...John MacMurray, a real New Yorker, and one of us. Life is hard paycheck to paycheck, but your harder life make us really pause and re-examine our connection to the other... Eye to eye, heart to heart, hand to hand, making the best of the worse of it, on the here mean NYC streets. All men are brothers, and it is better to give than receive!

Thanks so much for sharing these. You dont know this, but when you filmed these, you were actually filming history of ordinary people. The only difference is that they were without a home. This is American history as it should be told. The important figures in our lives are nice. But almost nobody bothered to film these nice everyday people.

His overwhelming honesty was amazing and I honor him for it. I wish he could have gotten help from the VA! The person in the car who threw that bottle at him was one of the lowest forms of scum on Earth. If I had been there I'd be doing serious time in prison if I'd ever caught up with him/it etc.

It's okay if you leave your stuff everywhere. You'll get used to having a place I suffer from ptsd and there are days I can't put things away either. I moved to another country for 20 years because partly I knew i'd have a hard time functioning because of the P. T. S d it was pretty horrific. Since I couldn't drive. I was worried that my learning disabilities would get in the way of working in america I move to taiwan. I was able to teach I find it difficult trying to read just to living in california again I did manage to get medical. Now I can hopefully see a doctor and get therapy and medication. So I can feel a little better The p t s d causes pain and fatigue. What I'd really like to do is save a bunch of money working at fuji film per year or two If I get this job I wanna figure out how homelessness. It seems like there doesn't seem to be enough affordable housing I think for single people make it have good roommates hopefully But I truly don't understand what's happening to america

Not to take anything away from his story and experiences, but I find the inconsistencies in his story to be enlightening. He said he was drafted, but that he's also not yet even 60 years old. For him to have made the last year of the draft in 1973 as an 18 year old, he'd presently be 68. I also find it strange that no mention of the VA was made by either you or him. The VA has several programs and options for getting veterans housed. One of which provides a section 8 voucher and a go-to-the-head-of-the-line pass in order not to be stuck on a long waiting list. If you are indigent you can also apply for a VA pension. Many homeless though have found it to be quite lucrative to make the claim of being a veteran. Remember Eddie Murphy in Trading Places?
@ErikKSwanson
@ErikKSwanson 6 месяцев назад
As I said at the beginning of the video - this was shot in 2008. That probably changes your math quite a bit. As for the VA... who knows. Perhaps the mental health issues and drug/alcohol addictions had something to do with him not pursuing those opportunities. I'm sure there are homeless people claiming to be veterans who aren't, but there are quite a few homeless veterans out there.

He probably believes his lies at this point. When he was homeless it was probably lie and survive (or get drugs/booze) than be honest and starve (or have no drugs/booze). I'd rather lie and get rewarded for it than be honest and have the world pissing all over me while I'm starving.
