Ten years ago I released my first Black Raven short story in a now defunct fantasy magazine. Nineteen stories, two collections, and some audio books later, it's time to look back on my pulp thief's journey - triumphs, setbacks, close-calls, and the publishing biz.

I had no idea you are a published writer. Super cool stuff. I really enjoy your channel. I find comfort in it. I often struggle with anxiety. Your stuff helps calm those very dangerous waters my mind is trying to navigate. Thanks for the vids man. I suspect I will soon be exploring this mountain of daggers. Keep the great work.

As a wannabe writer, I am really inspired by you getting your stories published (and, frankly, a little bit jealous!). Any tips for an aspiring author? Keep up the good work!
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 6 лет назад
The best tips I can give are: 1- Don't give up. Getting published can be a slow and frustrating process. Be ready for a lot of rejection. 2- Practice. Like any skill or trade it takes a lot of work. Use workshops or peer reviews. Learning to review others is a fantastic tool in honing your own writing. The best peer reviewers are other writers who know what to look at and how to make suggestions. 3- Read a lot. See how other people do it. Learn tricks in regard to pacing and technique. Don't limit yourself to only what's in your genre, but widen your reading to include many genres. 4- Give yourself deadlines and stick to them. Make them reasonable deadlines such as one chapter a month. 5- Write what you love. Write the stories you want to read.
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 6 лет назад
Once the story was as polished as I could possibly get it, that was when it was time. Never underestimate the power of peer-reviews. All my stories go through beta readers to give me some outside feedback. As for where to sell them, it depends. For short fiction a good place to start is the SFWA qualifying market list for magazines. Anthology calls and smaller magazines or site will require some hunting. There's no big database. For long fiction like novels you'll want to hunt for a literary agent, There's lots of resources out there that discuss where to look and how to write your query letter.

I know that I'm a few days late on this, but I've just finished listening to Damoren about a week ago. I wasn't sure that I was going to like the story, but I've really enjoyed your content on this platform and I wanted to give it a shake. As soon as I can I will be picking up the rest of the Valducan series. They are amazing, and I love how you work the lore of the world in. I know very small bits and pieces of the lore of the various monsters described in the books, but it seems like you've taken those details and made them work for your world. Thank you for your work in creating these stories and for your content here as well.

I just got home from the hospital. The operation to remove the malignant growth from my kidney was a success. The surgeon says it doesn't look like it spread beyond my kidney. A pathologist will examine the growth to see if has spread or not. I am now reading Sea of Quills. I loved Temptation's Proposal and am now beginning Treasure of Bogen Helm. It's just as good as Seth's first collection.

Huh! You brought up Mark Morrison in reference to Campaign Coins, and my brain instantly went "Isn't that the guy who wrote the Call of Cthulhu scenario Reign of Terror?" Sure enough! Love behind the scenes stuff like this. Really goes to show that sheer determination is half the battle.
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 2 года назад
So I never realized Mark wrote for Call of Cthulhu. I'd seen that he won an ENnie for the 7e Horror on the Orient Express, but assumed that had to do with the medallion Campaign Coins made for it. It was like a year or more later I was reading Mansion of Madness and wondered who wrote it. The name looked really familiar and it took me a minute before a whole bunch of stuff suddenly clicked into place.

Seth, Where do you find your beta readers? Every single time I get someone volunteering to beta my work their response is always along the lines of, "Yeah. It's fine." 3 to 5K word chapters need more than three words with punctuation.
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 6 лет назад
That's a question for the ages. I've found some through writing groups and friends I've made there. The best ones are usually writers themselves who know how to critique. Non-writers tend to be more complimentary with "It's great," or simply focusing on commas, rather than giving harsh feedback and story/style suggestions. My standard statement when I give a reader my work is, "Make the fucker bleed," because I want some brutal feedback. I'd rather find and fix something while a story is in the raw stage than have editors reject it because there are problems. As time goes, and life happens, you'll constantly be rotating through new readers as old ones get too busy. I'd love to say it gets easier to find good Beta readers, but that would be a lie.
@StutleyConstable
@StutleyConstable 6 лет назад
Thanks, Seth. I think I have gone through the exact situation you are describing with a friend who was alpha reading my work and who had agreed to edit the book once it was done. She was a big help, but when it came time to edit she started making suggestions for major changes in the writing style that I could have addressed before the first draft was done had she mentioned them previously. To be clear, I was going to pay her to do the edit and she was not unreasonably priced. Several other issues arose and things sort of fell apart. I haven't been able to bring myself to rework that book and it has been almost four years since I completed the first draft. I just look at it and close the file. Could you suggest any writers' groups for someone starting out?
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 6 лет назад
I'm a huge fan of OWW sff.onlinewritingworkshop.com/ I pretty much learned how to write there. My cover blurb from Elizabeth Bear came from that group. It's a good place to swap crits with other authors. One tip I can suggest is when you're posting a Chapter 1, find other authors who have submitted a Ch1 or 2. Review them. They will probably review you back, and then you can go back and forth reviewing each chapter as you both go. It's good to keep those relationships since they can say things like "You have X in this chapter, but you had Y five chapters ago" or simply "It's been several chapters since you addressed X. Might want to get back to that."
@asaskald

Do you use a structure in your writing? Do you have a favorite?
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 6 лет назад
It really depends on the story. Some short stories begin with a couple key scenes or images and from there I write it out in my head until I'm ready to write it out. For novels, some books I've started only knowing the first 3 chapters and the hope I know what happens next by the time I get there. But sometimes I've made a detailed outline before beginning.

A good year late touching on this subject, but I only recently found your channel, so... yeah. I love your gaming reviews. I really do. I've been through almost everything on your channel at this point. Still, it'd be awesome to hear you talk about writing more. As a fellow author, and yes, published, I really struggle to find ways to talk about writing, and there's a lot of folks out there that could use the knowledge you have. Going from aspiring to published is a rough journey, as you know. A lot of people don't know where to start, or how to even approach the whole thing. Add into that, all the "Ten Tips" and "Easy Tricks" essays and videos out there that really throw new authors off way more than they help, it can be pretty daunting. Having someone who knows the terrain, that would be awesome. (I've had a novel sitting with a publisher for almost three years now. Still waiting to hear yes or no. I feel the pain, man.) I've tried doing in on my own blog, but I kind of fall into getting published by accident, more than by design, and my stuff is beyond weird, so it's not really a thing I'm good at helping people with. Well, that and I tend to be a little too blunt about reality, which probably makes them feel worse. Anyway, wanted to toss that out as a suggestion, cause over the last bit as I've gotten familiar with you videos, and a bit with your writing, I really think you could help a lot of aspiring authors navigate the mess that is getting to being published. You are super approachable, concise, and offer great advice. Something to think about, at least, I hope. Thanks, Seth, for being you.
