girl i don't get the tongue scraper hate haha. it's literally one of the few "zero waste swaps" i actually use EVERY single day - and one of the things where the "zero waste swap" is so much better than the "normal" version. it has been such a game changer for my dental hygiene; it just makes my mouth feel way more clean and makes my breath a lot nicer as well. but anyway, loved the video as always

I remember getting a free plastic one from my dentist years ago, but I never incorporated it into my routines. Maybe it’s different for me, but I didn’t get the point since I can simply use my toothbrush on my tongue if I feel the need🤷🏼‍♀️

I saw a soap hack: you cut one bar into 4 pieces and store the 3 away. The whole soap wont be soaked or suck up all the moisture sum when you're showering. Also I accidentally fit the bar into a teeny tiny glass jar I then took to a camping trip :D (and totally rocking with the day after makeup myself too XD) Also about dent tabs, I wish someone could innovate multi tasty tabs, like a candy jar, but in different flavored dent tabs (for mental/sensory health reasons)

Not exactly the same and haven't tried them myself, but Crush & Brush tablets come in a few soda flavours- you could get them each and then mix them in another jar. Just an idea, I like your idea though!

The cutting up soap tip is very useful, especially with larger bars of soap.

Natural Loofah comes from the Loofah Gourd which is a land plant that you can dry into a sponge. It is more like an exfoliator sponge and not as soft as sea sponge.
@zevrxn
@zevrxn 7 месяцев назад
the good thing about it is that if you can stand the first few days, you can kinda break the loofah in and it becomes a lot softer. i don't particularly mind the exfoliation anyway so it works super well for me edit bc i forgot: also i get mine for free from my relatives that grow the loofah plant at home so it's a money saver on top of being sustainable

Where does it grow?

@@Huntress_Raven It's native to Southeast Asia but can be grown almost anywhere. It needs tons of drying time if you plan to make loofahs out of it. It gas to mold during drying so best dried in like a garage, shed, basement etc

"I dont need my bathroom to half smell like lavender, half smell like poop." LOL I 100% agree with that. I don't get these air fresheners. They don't get rid of the bad smell, just add another smell on top which just makes it worse in my opinion. Just open a window!

we love these videos, thank you Gittemary! as an italian, i will never NOT be surprised when people don't use a bidet, to me it is so natural! Also, I wish tooth tabs weren't so expensive still - they come at 20 cents each in my local zero waste/ bulk store which is WILD to me, and the 100% aluminum tube toothpaste is even more expensive... that's not accessible to me, sadly.

Agree with a lot but tongue scraper is a staple every day since I got it. Cant compare with just brushing the tongue with the toothbrush, it feels so much cleaner with the scraper. In Germany, recycled toiletpaper is Not as recent as in other countries. I remember using virgin fibre toilet paper for the first time in my home like 2011. And that was only because my brother and I begged my mother to buy softer tp for weeks (cause recycled tp used to be way more stiff and scratchy).

I had left over tshirt pieces (sleeve portion from a short sleeve shirt) from making tshirt quilts that were sitting in my fabric remnants box. I have a few LastObject items I've tried and I agree with what you said. I really wanted to like their Last Swab, and I used it for a long time, but mine broke with less than a year of use. I couldn't find anything on their website about how to dispose of it, and at first they didn't have refills so I would have had to buy the whole item with the case again. (And the case is not necessary IMO). I think their LastTissue item makes more sense, if you're someone who is used to carrying tissues on the go. The case makes a lot of sense. I'm curious to see what they do in the future. I will say, a bunch of people I know who aren't interested in low waste have items from them, so it feels like they are reaching an audience that is normally not interested in lower waste swaps.

I am 50/50 on the “reaching new consumers” thing, I understand 100%, and I also think that it is great that they reach people that perhaps wouldn’t look into reusables otherwise. But there could also be an issue with consumers learning that sustainability = shiny new things, rather than using that we have. I don’t have an exact solution, but yeah, I can see both pros and cons 😅

I think the last tissue (a to-go tissue box) is a great idea and can make reusable hankies more accessible to non-zero waste folks. I like it a lot. The box... meh. I tried LastObject with the LastSwab and I loved it, I have hyper sensitivities (I'm autistic, I can handle wood or metal, sadly) and this one helped to keep proper ear hygiene, 3 years and it's still ok (I had to reglue one tip, tho) but I agree with you, the case for it is not necessary and I also got their tissues (home and pocket ones, because mine were old and full of holes 😅 i finally got rid of it), and I really love the silicone sleeves, and I still can use any of my tissues in that sleeve to keep it clean in my bag. I never heard of straws from them, and their packagings is just a piece of carboard. I wouldn't buy cotons, I made my own with some old teeshirts ^^

I'm 5 months late to this discussion, but the Last Swab was one of my first purchases in my zero waste journey and I fall in and out of love with it. The ear one I use more, though you're not supposed to use things like that in your ears. But I cannot get on board with the other one that mimics a "standard" cotton bud. I use it for my make up and it's so hard to clean and I find it just smears my make up everywhere. I do use it to apply spot treatment though. So hopefully I can find uses for these things!

I use a no package deodorant from a local company Nous le Savon ( which means we know and we the soap, play on words). It works great. I am lucky that we have a local vendor here in Montreal Rose Citron who also makes and sells toothpaste in bulk. It tastes great and works well, better than the tooth tabs that I have tried. thank you for mentioning the last swap or whatever! I got some of their products as gifts from family, which yeah nice thought, but I was also baffled at the small plastic container for a single swap stick, like wtf? I also have a metallic ear spoon (from korea) which I use, so I had no use for the last swap thing so I sold it to someone who was interested in it. It feels such an "aesthetic of ethics" brand to me, as they're just more needles pretty junk for people to buy. I love my stainless steel tongue scraper, took maybe three nights to get used to it but now it feels bad to be without. You can't get the same result with your toothbrush, but the spoon point is great, I need to try it out since with the scraper the position comes naturally but don't know how to use the edge of the spoon unless maybe a small spoon 🤔

I have the LastStraw and I love it. My drinks tend to not make it into my mouth without a straw because of nerve damage to my lips and jaw, so this has been a good swap for me. I think in that type of situation it could be more eco friendly than disposable. I have a set of reusable facial rounds as well. I use them twice a day, so I think that is probably better than disposable. Mine came in compostable packaging and are compostable fabric. I love my Ethique solid personal care products. They're affordable and sustainable. I have a reusable swab set made from controlled harvest bamboo and silicon. They're okay but not a true swap. They're currently my only eco swap regret. My travel bidet though... I don't want to be without it.

The only problem with a bidet, is it uses water. We are on tank water and so water is precious and we couldn't waste water in this way. If we had mains water, and didn't have to think about our water usage, then maybe. Not everyone has the luxury of unlimited water, including having to pay for water usage. I keep telling them it's a bathroom not a perfume palor, and people with asthma and COPD like me, that chemical smell is very dangerous. i tried to use a natural orange scented vinegar that I made myself and people complained that it smelled like vinegar. ummm, and chemically nauseaous air fresheners are any better?? Agree on almost everything! Would love to swap to a safety razor but am still too scared, will have to give myself a push some day. But the toothpaste tabs have never worked for me. Not only are they insanely expensive (at least in the zero waste shops available to me), like 10 times more expensive than tooth paste, but also they don't have the right ingredients to actually protect the teeth like flour and xylithol. So switched back after trying for a few months, there might be better ones out there now though, so might be worth checking again. At the moment I use the toothpaste from happy brush, which is vegan, has all the ingredients I want, the tube is 30% recycled and 100% recyclable, so not great, but better than the very low standard atm and works a lot better for me than the dental tabs :)

I would much rather just use my toothbrush to clean my tongue instead of doing that. As for the crystal deodorant, I'm half and half. I actually do use it and I like it better than most any other deodorant I've tried! I hate things that transfer onto my clothing or leave stains, and the crystal stuff has never done that, which is great! I don't think it /completely/ covers up smells, but I don't think I've ever found a deodorant that has for me either. However, the one thing I don't like about it is the application process. Hi. I want to add something. About changing towels. I think it was in tænk I found information about it, but often it is just better to use up the towels, blankets and what not you allready have. And then you need new ones then remember to buy the plastic free versions. Cause compared to how much plastic it leaves in the water to use the ones you allready have vs. the inpact of producing new ones is bigger. And I am new to your channel, do you have good suggestion to how to travel with soapbars? Cause I use soapbars for my body at home (I gave up on hair it seems all the ones I tried was bad). But when I travel I use liquid soap. I have a toiletbag that is always packed, so I don't really take it out when I come home, so I worry about the soap drying proberly and not just become a bacteria bomb cause it is sitting there all wet waiting for me to go on a trip again. So I would need some kind of small container with air holes, I havn't really seen that anywhere...

I have a question that has been going on in my head for a while now! Soon I will live in my very first own place and I‘ve been thinking of getting a bidet that you can attach to the toilet. Now my question is, is there even a way to get these thrifted of would that be kinda nasty? I have a tight budget and we do have some stores that offer them..for a pretty high price though. You can get them online like Amazon but that’s the option I would like to avoid :/ Does anyone have some advice about that? Thanks for listening 💗

I don’t mind the last swab as a product, but it’s not the *last* swab you’ll ever need(same with tissues etc you’ll always need more than one unless you feel like washing them between uses). I already feel like I need a few more because one swipe is not enough and I can’t wash it every time I need to reuse it multiple times, I also hate the (recycled??) plastic case it comes in, I’d much rather have a little container with a few in it than one weird little case that the swab doesn’t stay in the right spot, the only thing that could possibly make sense about the case is maybe the hole is to put it on a keychain? But otherwise just kind of weird useless packaging

Question I am using solid soaps for a lomg time but something that bothers me is that in the end it is always sticking to the soapholder and can almost not be removed. do you have a tip for that so it does not stick so much ?
@lyannecb8499
@lyannecb8499 Год назад
The best solution I've found is to let them dry. So, when I've used shampoo & conditioner bars, they need to dry out between use (we live in hard water land, I've found refill liquid shampoo & conditioner work best for my hair at the moment), so they're not getting the build up sticking them to the container. With the bars of hand soap on the sink... They do get sticky. So each time I use them, I leave them the other way up, so they can dry on the top between uses. I get less sticky build up on the bar that lives on a wire rack in the downstairs toilet than the bar that lives on the sink in the upstairs bathroom, and that's partly because air can circulate more around the wire rack, and partly because the sink is poorly designed and doesn't drain well from the soap wells on it. (I'm in a rented house, if you own your home & can change the sink, take your time to make sure the soap well actually drains effectively.) I had the soap on a loofah soap holder for a few months this year, but it went mouldy, so that's not an effective solution. Harder soap takes longer to get sticky - but I choose not to use tallow, so that's not an option for me. I've had lightweight sturdy plastic soap dishes in the past with drainage holes at the base and enough clearance between the holes at the base and the surface it will rest on that the soap can drain & dry between uses - but I've not seen affordable soap dishes for a long time, or more importantly, ones that aren't likely to crack my sink if my autistic son throws them into it... So I live with the soft soap bars. You can take the small ends of soap bars and press them together to make another bar to use.

Love the video! Does anyone have recommendations for natural or low-impact antiperspirants? In summer I sweat quite a bit, sometimes in winter too if I have one too many layers, and when I used natural deodorant I ended up staining my white or pale-colored shirts. I don’t want to depend on products with aluminum in them (which I understand is what blocks perspiration) but I also would like to be able to wear my lighter colored clothing without worrying about ruining them. (My current solution is natural deodorant when wearing dark colors, and the mass market in plastic antiperspirants when wearing white…but would love to see what other options exist)

I use the Old Spice mens ones in cardboard! Although I don’t sweat much, I definitely don’t sweat with them. I’ve also never ever had clothing damage and have been using it for years. I also think the smell is the best of any cardboard deodorant I’ve tried. I think I tried one by Raw or something?? It MADE me smell. Tom’s was a little overpowering, so it’s the one I just keep in my work locker. My friend had some clothing damage from Native, which I had unfortunately already purchased and would be thrown out if I returned, so I just put it on with old sleep shirts or old workout clothing.

This is great, but remember if you are unable to use a sustainable option (ie due to disability or low income), that is okay - it's better to make the changes you can, than to feel so guilty for the ones you can't that you don't do anything. Sustainability must include accessibility and inclusion. I would also add that throwing away what you currently have to buy sustainable is not helpful - wait until you've finished with your item before making the swap

One thing I find interesting is that some of these swaps to me are still totally unnecessary: for example, I don't wear makeup, shave or do anything to my nails besides cutting them with a nail clipper, so I have no need for makeup remover or razors. I understand that we are all different and value different things, but to me it feels like when I speak with vegetarians and they mention how they could give up meat but not cheese and eggs, despite the many valid reasons to do so. I think existing sustainably nowadays is of course impossible to do perfectly, but I think as women it's also important to realize the impact of beauty rituals that have no real purpose besides "this is what you are expected to do as a woman" and to challenge society on this. After all, besides their environmental impact, these beauty rituals deprive us of precious time, money, and effort.

They may be unnecessary for some but others like to shave, file our nails and wear makeup. I don’t do it because society tells me to. I do it for myself and because it makes me feel good. I respect your idea and what you choose to do as well. 😊
