100% .6 review and speed test
in this video I will be speed testing .6 100% slingshot bands.
we will find out what kind of speed we can get with 8mm (5/16) and 9.5mm (3/8) steel.
A penatration test will be done on a soup can with both size ammo and I will give my overall thoughts on the elastic.

I'm thinking the downward angle caused deflection. Think sloped tank armor as opposed to right angles. That ball is simply rolling off of the can surface before it can penetrate. Straight on, it has no choice but to spend all its energy into the can.😉
@ATOMark
@ATOMark 3 года назад
True. I think it was a little of both. When I was testing the draw shooting down I was able to pull a little more back. Shooting parallel to the ground the bands stopped at my anchor.
@forksandspoons7272
@forksandspoons7272 3 года назад
@@ATOMark hmmm! That would explain a phenomenon I've noticed. The whack on a downward shot on a cardboard box is typically quieter than a straight on hit and it has always confused me. I very well could be drawing a bit shorter than normal. 🤔

As you say there is 8 mm lead available combined with a lighter cangaroo leather it can give up to 20 % more power with 3:1 band ratio. Or the same bandset and pouch as i mentioned but with 10 mm lead and your youtube chanell would go 4 times more surscribers. Good work ATO!

I think that momentum and mass is more important than penetration when it comes to calculating damage done with the slingshots. That big dent is Definitely more deadly. When I sling lead glandes with a shepherd's sling they won't go through a 18mm birch plywood. Small caliber pistol rounds and even the powerful air rifle can pass through that plywood. But sling with a lead ammunition has definitely more stopping power because of the mass. It's illegal to hunt with a slingshot where I live. 10mm lead with Snipersling 0.7 bands would definitely be my choice if I have to choose my hunting setup. I have tested numerous bands, but I still like the smooth and light draw Snipersling bands can offer. My accuracy has improved a lot with 11mm steel because of that. I like how you test those beautiful frames. There are many I want, but can't afford.😛 Aluminum HTS small is currently my favorite. I must buy HTS made from G10 directly from Bill Hayes site. 🤤
@ATOMark
@ATOMark 3 года назад
Agreed. The larger ammo does hit harder. I need to find a way to test size vs weight. For example 8mm lead vs 9.5mm steel. I am curious if it is the surface area of the larger steel ammo, the weight or the the hardness of the projectile that is causing the harder impacts. Lead compresses when it hits and makes me wonder if it is transferring more energy to the target. From the tests in this video ifor sure the 9.5mm does hit harder. I just wonder if shooting 10-11mm steel or lead is just overkill when 9.5 or 8mm lead would be more than enough for squirrel, rabbit or birds.

Most slingshots have a horn width of 2 centimeters. This is a problem for rods with a cone width of more than 2 centimeters. I would like to see the name of the slingshots (specifically with a horn of more than 2 centimeters), so that it would be easier to find them in stores.

All the Energy dumped out of the ammo into the Big Dent, a Lot bigger surface area to absorb that energy, you Need More rubber for that larger ammo, Try Two sets of Bands. I have seen Joerg sprave shoot some sharp tipped Square blocks of steel, at a steel target, with a Hugh amount of penetration, a Round ball produces Higher on target energy, that spreads out Fast, while smaller projectile produces better penetration, while Sharp pointed square Produced Less Denting But More Damage, by cutting, tearing, into steel cans.

I am surprised that 9.5 did not smash thru both sides. Lead definately has more punching power. When l started shooting satties about 5-6 months back l got some lead balls too. I was using a crate as a catch box. I had put an old shirt and also a pillow to stop the shots. Despite being slower the lead balls would punch deep inside the pillow. I was shooting a Simple shot Torque with 1740 looped tubes.

what was the weight of the projectile being shot? in Grams? Because at thats is some good speed around 300fps, 314fps it would be easy to get what the energy in Joules was with that ammo as it was crossing the chrony. That 9.5 was around 260 fps so obviously heavier, larger dia. Try shooting 1/2" or 3/4" Steel ball ammo maybe Use two sets of flatbands for some real power.

Hey nice videos! Did you come up with some thoughts in the meantime about those 8mm lead balls compared to 9.5mm steel for hunting choice of preference.. I think I prefer shooting light bands with 8mm steel for good speed, range and accuracy on targets.. But also want to have a small stack of hunting ammo and stuck on the thought between 9.5mm steel vs 8mm lead?!.. I know 10mm lead is actually the preferred hunting ammo - but do not want to go for heavy band sets to match that heavy weight, I can only imagine pulling .7 or .8 thickness bands in full butterfly is not the most comfortable draw.. So would like to go as light as possible and somehow firmly believe that the sweet spot for hunting might be around 8mm lead and or 9.5mm steel for best, range, accuracy, impact, comfort and even cost efficiency for small game.. Steel also has some better properties, environment friendly, magnetic options, no reshape so it can be reusable and less expensive compared to lead.. Lead also needs to draw more heavy for reaching the same velocity which might fatigue you, but does deliver more impact theoretically - does it actually? (8mm lead has less surface area than 9.5mm steel) furthermore it is less likely to be taking by wind when losing speed, but then again might have less range thinking about gravity drop off and more weight should have harder time to maintain speed, or does density and the smaller aerodynamic might actually fly more straight and further than 9.5mm steel is accurate?.. Excuse me for my list of thoughts, but all things considered what do you think?..
@ATOMark
@ATOMark Год назад
I have no experience shooting 8mm lead, but I do know that they are very similar in weight. From the tests I have done. 8mm has better penatration 9.5 steel is more of a blunt force trauma ammo. So I would imagine that the softer material of lead at a smaller diameter and same weight as 9.5 should be superior to the 9.5 steel. If you shoot long draw I don't see that being a problem. Chuckin Steel shoots 9.5 steel with .5 bands and drops critters no problem.

what happens when flatband is in high temperature condition? my plan is hunting to where the areas have a lot humidity and high tenprature, approx 30-32° will flatband be low performance or otherwise?
@Sporek
@Sporek 3 года назад
I've been recently shooting in similar conditions - hot and humid weather and my bands behaved inconsistently. My accuracy was bad. But maybe different bands behave better in hot temperature than others. It seems to be that latex has a sweet point of performance around room temperature 20°-25° in my case.
@ATOMark
@ATOMark 3 года назад
Yes this is exactly right temperature does affect band performance. Too hot and too cold will diminish performance. The go around seems to be going to a thicker band. But I am not sure if this will help with heat.

8mm is lighter, like a bb, it will pass through. but what you really want (for hunting) is stopping power. that 9.5 is bigger so is the dent. that means 9.5 is dumping all the energy into the target with out passing through. this is way more deadly because of the blunt force trauma to the prey / target.

@Sporek 3 года назад
Hello again Mark! I've been wondering today what has happened to you... 😉. Anyway, man I've been wondering why your speeds on the chrony are so much better than those of the other guys from the forums 🤔. For example, I've read some posts with Snipersling Black testing and they get speeds in range of 275fps-280fps with the similar short draw and tapers as you. Same thing with the other bands! I think the difference must be in elongation. How much do you stretch those bastards 😁❓
@ATOMark
@ATOMark 3 года назад
All my tests are at max elongation. I had found when I was starting out many guys were saying they use a 5.5 elongation but when you test the max elongation it is 7. The last couple of cm generate a lot of speed. If I was to use a 5.5 elongation on a band set that maxed out at 5.5 dividing my draw by 5.5 would give me my active band length. Then I just need to add some elastic for my pouch and for attachment. This elastic should stop dead at my anchor point. I discovered many guys were posting there preferences not what a maxed band should do. All my test are calculated like this. There are some variables like elastic inconsistencies, and weather but from band set to band set these the speeds should be almost identical.
