It's actually amazing how Sun Wukong is the most popular character in Journey to the West even though he's technically not the Main Protagonist

It's funny how Nux fell into the classic trap. I have seen so many people watch the prelude that is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven's rise to power and think that it constitute the journey to the west before they realise it's just the prequel lol.

Nux missing the biggest flex of all flexes - yes, he couldn't escape Buddha's palm, but he flexed on Buddha in the most petty way possible. For who else in this universe or any other, can stand and truthfully say that they pissed on Buddha and got away with it

These are the characters that inspired the ones in Dragonball. 34:12 Tien shinhan 49:42 Oolong 50:21 Yamcha 14:38 Ox King 45:15 Bulma There are probably more, but these are the ones I know.

Fun fact: the whole of sun wukongs story is just the prologue to journy to the west getting trapped under a mountain until anime protag of the story shows up and uses a god level item to make sun wukong his bodyguard, kinda like in inuyasha.

In Folklore, the JinGuBang wasn't a pillar of the Dragon King's Palace but was the Pillar that held/sealed the Sea, correct me if Im wrong but its removal is the reason why we have tides, tsunamis, and crazy ocean storms. The Dragon Kings didn't give him the armor, they actually told Wukong to put the pillar back, but Wukong refused, so they tried to take it back by force and Wukong beat the shit out of them and was like, how about a suit of armor for all my troubles. Additionaly, when he comes out of the Gourd, he was actually blessed with special eyes that basically did the same thing as ErLangShen's third eye.

Nux REALLY needs to watch Overly Sarcastic Productions' series on Journey to the West. This video barely touched upon the actual journey itself, which is where Wukong's character development largely takes place, and OSP presents the journey in such a way that it's both humorous AND informative. I know I'm not the first person to comment this, but that doesn't mean I agree any less; I just wanna make sure that the Boss gets the best possible lore.

Wukong is the original Overpowered Protagonist. He said it's monke time and flexes all over the place.

I still think his biggest flex was also his smartest when they tried to stop him with indestructible gates, doors that could not be damaged by anything. He broke the walls down around the gates and left the doors standing untouched since he wasn't going to waste his time on them.

Sun wukong was based off an earlier Indian myth of hanumon as well. But it's really cool seeing how toriyama was inspired by the story. I mean just goku turning into a monkey, his attitude and eating, flying nimbus, power pole etc. Then having oda being inspired by both toriyama and the original sun wokong story. It's monkey d luffy for a reason. His stretching is just an an analog for the power pole. The cloud around an awaking is a call back to wokong. Even luffy starting in east blue and having to travel westward is similar.

So many series have been based of Journey to the West. God of Highschool is one of the newer ones and one of my favorites. Mori Jin is one of the best versions of Son Wukong.

Nux: Wow, the Journey to the West story is all about searching for Immortality. Everyone: Dude, it’s only Chapter One. We haven’t started, “The Journey,” yet.

The monk is real, from Tang dynasty, 7th century. he traveled to India and brought back the original sanskrit buddhist scriptures, which he spent the rest of his life interpreting into Chinese. The entire monkey king story, which came centuries later was built on this real event.

In some versions of the story. The rock Sun Wukong was born from was actually a shard of the 5 colored stone the mother goddess Nuwa used to repair the heavens after the water god Gonggong accidentally damaged it. Chinese mythology is crazy man. (The 5 colored stone could also be called the 5 elements stone in a way. As 5 color is most likely in reference to the cycle of Wuxing. The Chinese 5 elements). Some of my other favorite stories are -The story of Houyi, the archer god that saved the earth/mortal realm by shooting down 9 of the 10 Jinwu's. (The Jinwu or Yangwu is known as the 3 Legged Golden Crow, and long story short, they are sun birds. Normally, they would take turns passing over the earth, but one day, they decided to visit all at the same time. As you can guess, 10 suns appearing in the sky is uh, bad. So Houyi, for one reason or another, shot down 9 of the 10. I say one reason or another because there are multiple versions of the story, in which Houyi's motivation for the deed differ) -The story of Chang'E, the goddess of the moon. Long story short, she's Houyi's wife, and to put it bluntly in modern terms. She overdoses on immortal medicine, and ascends to the moon. Oh, she also manages to take her pet rabbit with her for some reason, which becomes the moon rabbit. It is also why one of the animals symbolic of the moon in Chinese folklore/mythology is the rabbit. (I find it funny that the wife of the man that shot down 9 suns is the goddess of the moon, lol) -The yellow millet dream and the butterfly dream are two cool Taoist short stories that I recommend reading. -Pangu's creation of the universe is also cool. I also recommend looking it up. A highly simplified and out of context version is basically. Primordial god man creates the universe by splitting an egg in half with an ax and dying.

The timeline in The Journey To The West is fantasy but the story itself came around during the Ming dynasty during the 1500s

Stuff that Journey to the west have influenced in anime that I can think of on top of my head Dragonball : Son Goku name is literally Sun WuKong but pronouced in japanese. (Both same kanji) Goku first rides the nimbus cloud using a stick pole that stretches taking a Priest/Tang Sanzang/Bulma with partners that is a Pig/Oolong/Zhu Bajie and a desert bandit/Yamcha/Water Demon/Sha Wujing. Also Chichi's dad The OX KING is one of the greatest villains in Journey to the West in terms of power that is equal to WuKong and both reside in the Fire Mountain. One Piece: MONKEY D Luffy (i.e. WuKong) takes on a Journey and meets crazy villains who can transform/Devil Fruit and Luffy can also transform/stretch (WuKong can transform into 72 creatures) And Gear 5 is LITERALLY Sun WuKong but in white (it got white clouds on his back and everything) Naruto: The Shadow Clone Jutsu, Naruto signature move, is also one of WuKong's signature move. InuYasha: A Demon that got sealed in a tree (WuKong also got sealed in a rock mountain after all the chaos he created in the Heaven by Buddha) is forced to guide a Monk/Priestress/Kagome/San Sanzang and Inuyasha/Sun WuKong is cursed with a spell that makes him Sit/Golden Crown and is accompanied by Miroku/Sango/Zhu Bajie/Sha Wujing. Heck some of the villains in InuYasha the Youkais are literally straight out of Journey to the West.

If you're interested, you could look up on whom the monk was based off from. The guy has a fascinating story and he did went on a massive journey to India to find the Buddhist scrolls to bring back to replace and/or update the sacred texts. It pretty much inspired the story later on.
