The wisest choice is to make lots of wood or stone pickaxe while in a playthrough even if you have a better pic so you can save that pickaxe for blocks that can't be mined by the stone or wood you only need a stable resource method but due to water being unobtainable stone will eventually run out same with wood i don't remember there ever being nether saplings

Tip for anyone who wants to do this: Basalt is important in building. It has high enough blast resistance to fend off Ghast fireballs, and it's fireproof! Edit: also if you want Nether Brick, just smelt Netherrack in a furnace.

Both methods is just as easy, If you find a fortress, you will get bricks for days. If you smelt it, you can use lava buckets as fuel
