100 Dollar Drill Press?! Harbor Freight 10" Drill Press

In this video I unbox, setup and review a #harborfreight 10" bench-top #drillpress.
A bench-top drill press has been on my wish list for a while now, and with a 25% off coupon in hand I thought I would see what Harbor Freight offered. I ended up walking out the door with this drill press for about $110 after tax, title, license and insurance. When looking on craigslist for used drill presses, everything I was finding was about $130 and up so I went ahead and took a chance on the hazard fraught. I never did figure out where the two extra pieces went, but so far everything seems great.

One more thing, the extra parts you had arent really listed in the manual, but one is the knob for the lid on top and the wedge is used to take the chuck off the spindle if you ever need too. Great video! Keep em coming!

the small round piece is for the lid on top its a handle to open the top cover

Thanks for the video. I'm looking at our Canadian counterpart, Princess Auto's, equivalent to this which looks identical. Have you dried drilling metal with it?

Definitely looks like a decent drill press, hard to beat the price point at $99 with a coupon. I'll be picking one of these up to play with. I may upgrade the motor down the line if I need it.

CCS noted the exact problem I had with the upper set screw, thanx for solving that problem. The knob goes on the belt cover. The "key" I can't figure out what that's for.

The one metal strip is to hold the arbor down why you remove or replace the chuck the other one I have no clue...i have an extra piece.. myself..lol

I’m on number three of these 10” drill press. I’m taking the third one back again tomorrow. The runout was way over acceptable on all 3 units. Like 20-30 thousands of runout on each one....

@Dustch shed woodshop Yes, I am pleased with it. It does the job and makes nice holes! It doesn't have some of the fit and finish features of a nicer tool but it works fine.

I have the 8" model, still going (strong)?! Not sure how old it is but I remember it was $39! Before the store days! For homeowner / DIY use its fine.

The older ones were better cast iron table and base not stamped steel.

I bought one of these for 20 bucks from HF because it didn't have a chuck key. It's not perfect but it's held up well for me. One day I'll upgrade to a floor model. For now, I'll keep it!

The long-ish triangular metal part is called a drift. It is inserted into the slit in the quill to remove the arbor. If you haven't done so, make sure to clean the taper in the chuck and the arbor with a solvent, then reinstall. If you don't mind me saying, a spade bit isn't the best option for a press; a forstner bit works better in this application. Good luck.

Looks like a decent drill press, but I don't think they have changed the design of them for many years, so it is hard to screw up! I have a very similar one made by Mastercraft (a Canadian company, which likely sources their stuff from the same place as harbour freight ) and it works pretty good.

Have you tried to drill through high carbon steel or tool steel with it?

Befor putting the headstock on the colum id hammer on the chuck with the jaws wide open making sure not to dammage the pully box on the top of the headstock doing this. You can always move the table to either side and hit the chuck upwards with a dead blow Marlette The MT4 metric tapers do not seat like a Morris taper would becuse it has no flats to lock into the quell keeping it from slipping. You need to make sure its oil free on the taper or your drill can run but the bit won't turn depending how much down force you use drilling.

EXTRA PIECES - The little knob obviously fits into the hole on the side of the lid on top of your drill so you can open the cover to adjust the speed.

I got it’s cheaper brother and actually like it. The only gripe I have is that there isn’t some kind of chuck key holder. I know, I know, you can make something, but I spent the better part of an hour looking for something I figured was standard in all these machines. I have a full-size drill press, but these little guys are good when you need more portability. Great unboxing and I wish mine had the cranking action.

The website that I bought my jig from actually linked to this drill press in the online instructions. Hopefully they tested it to make sure it could get the job done. I'm shopping around but still might buy this HF model. Did you finish your lower?

Would anyone happen to know why after following the book and this video the tighten screw on the back of the table won’t keep the table locked on that position? Even after tightening it all the way it still doesn’t hold the table firmly.

Im going to recommend you get in the habit of always clamping your work to the table or use a fence or both. I dont know your skill leval, but if your drilling tin or any metals bits tend to grab as they punch through the other side and a twist drill will ripe it out of your hand and make it spin like a top in the blink of an eye. This cald do serious dammage to the drill, the bit , and worse your hand or arm. And send you running to the emergency room. It dosnt matter the type of materials your drilling. Always clamp your work to the table. Dont take this small tool for granted it can hurt you and will if you let it.
