JB weld does need advertising :/. I guess the manufacturers figure jb weld is so good, they don't need advertising for jb weld. Either that, or the manufacturer doesn't want to bother with advertising. Either way, I agree that they could use they if they wanted through project farms permission.

I was thinking, What if after you made the head you then coated it with a layer of a metallic substance to protect it from burns, like an aluminium foil barrier only a little thicker.
@kensmith5694
@kensmith5694 7 лет назад
The bunk of the head needs to be kept cool so some fins are in order. If JB Weld sticks to aluminum foil, just the foil would be enough. The thing the foil would be doing is keeping the burning chemistry away from the epoxy. A thin layer would do that perfectly well. Thicker metal my pop off the surface as it heats up.
@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen 7 лет назад
You can get away with adding metal powder up to 1/3 of the volume of the epoxy. That both makes it stronger and better at dissipating heat. Cast it so i has fins like the original cylinder head, but taller to account for the worse material, and i think that thing would probably mow your lawn before it dies.
@WineScrounger
@WineScrounger 6 лет назад

Actually surprised it ran at all. Not because of the jb weld, but because there was no ground for the spark plug. It just so happened that the gap between the plug washer and the head bolt washer was close enough for the spark to jump, can see it arcing while its running.

JB weld is pretty good stuff ! I had a 2000 E-150 with a coolant leak. Its a "dealer only" part in an extremely tight space(entire intake manifold off to fix correctly) that was leaking right where the part(just a threaded pipe) screws straight down into the block. I 1st tried RTV silicone, just glob'n it all around the base & spreading it with a fat wire bc fingers couldn't even really reach all around it. That lasted a few weeks. the 2nd time I tried an epoxy putty & that only lasted a few weeks. The 3rd time I used JB & its still holding after nearly a year.

i have a '74 Jeep CJ5 that previous owner had the motor rebiult b4 i got it. there was a crack in the block just under and back from where exhaust manifold connects to exhaust when looking from side. it would weep a little coolant, but not an unheard of issue. year two of my owning it, i got sick of seeing it so i ground it out just a touch with a cutting wheel, filled it w/ JB Weld and smoothed it over b4 repainting block....that was 16 years ago, has never leaked since and i need a strong light and magnifying glass to find it. good stuff!

I know this is an old video but it reminds me of a JB Weld story. In the 80s a kid I knew broke some teeth off the ring gear in his 65 Mustang. Well, having a lot more time than money he took the ring gear out of the axle and washed/decreased it and formed up some teeth out of JB Weld. After it dried he used a dremel tool to cut them to the same height and shape as the originals and put the whole works back together. I told him 'That Shoot(or something close) ain't gonna work!'. He drove the car around the block a couple of times before it broke! I mean Yes it broke but it was pretty impressive that it made it that long! I love all of your videos. When I was a kid, I bought a broken CR125 dirt bike for $100 because it had a huge hole in the side of the block a little larger than the size of a quarter from the motor bottoming out on a larger bolder rock. I was only 13 years old but had a lot of experience from doing stuff with my dad. I used JB Weld to fill the entire hole and then a dremel to shape it perfectly. You did not provide an electrical contact between the spark plug's thread and the mass. So you can see sparks between the big washer and one of the head's bolt - some part of ignition power wasted there. Aluminum is a good conductor, JB Weld - not.

In the Army we had a proprietary form of Epoxy with shreds of titanium in it for strength. We used it for repairs on the engines of tanks, APCs, trucks and just about anything else that required that the repair endure immense amounts of stress, such as a 427 blown Chrysler Hemi Diesel crank bearing housing in the back of the block. One enterprising young feller even made a barrel for an M-3 grease gun from it, and it did yeoman's duty for about 6 magazines. We decided that he'd proved his point and I personally destroyed it.

I have to mention after watching this with my Son today and if the large washers were not used between a head bolt and the Spark Plug, the engine would not have run. It’s important to know that the Spark Plug depends on the metal cylinder head threads for its ground. The solution if ever doing this option, if needed, is to use connect a piece of wire between the Spark Plug and a head bolt that connects to the engine block. 😊

Project Farm I seriously can't wait to see where you are a year from now. hopefully making money on RU-vid doing what you love!! if you aren't. ALSO, I know this would be a lot of videos and take a little bit of time but I read about top tier fuels being "better" for your engine as opposed to non top tier. because of this, I started using Shell Nitro 93 octane fuel. just curious if there is any truth behind that. I think it would make a good mini series!
@jusb1066
@jusb1066 7 лет назад
hard to test fuels on a mower, they arnt fussy, the mower will run fine on 87 octane, so will most cars, 93 octane isnt needed on most cars at all. it wont do much for the engine, but sure shell might be using other additives that are better than another brand, more cleaners etc to prevent varnish, but that would take 10ks of miles and a control to know, certainly here in the UK supermarket fuels are always having issues with contamination but not so the major brands such as shell/esso etc
@DENicholsAutoBravado
@DENicholsAutoBravado 7 лет назад
Jusb1066 I'm sure the 93 octane is aki and not the American used Ron index. 93 for him might be migrade in America. I still agree with your point though. Lawn mowers don't care enough. I noticed I get poorer gas mileage from Chevron. Less additives means going farther per tank. lol Shell has similar gas mileage to cheap gas. I'm more confident with Shell's research though.

Years ago I had a tiller that had a tree limb fall on it braking the carburetor and half of the bolting surface off of the block. I used a toilet paper to reform the intake hole and painters tape to make a form then poured JB weld in to "recast" the block then filed it down and tapped the mounting hole. That lasted 7 years. I must say that $5.00 worth of JB Weld paid off time and time again.

I bought a Honda XR500R dirt bike cheap where the engine case had been cracked and repaired with JB Weld by the previous owner a few years before I bought the bike. On this bike, the engine also serves as a stressed member of the frame. I had it for 5 years and never had a problem with it and later sold it to someone else. That proved JB Weld's strength to me.

You are an extremely clever guy. I watched you very carefully how you did different tasks and you're totally professional. It's nice to know and also from the point of mechanical things, of course, we should always use them within the parameters for which they were designed. What you have shown is that amazing things can be done and motors can survive an awful lot. Most people I know, never change the engine oil in a mower. Just think how much hassle the engine has to deal with, with owners like that. You asked what kind of additive you should test since you are very sceptical about them. I'd like to see Ceramizer tested to see if it can really repair scores in bore or piston and to what extent can it do that say with a very old engine. How far can it really restore all the old wear damage, the light scoring and so forth?

JB weld is amazing stuff. Hand my sled chew up a ring and pitted the head. The local power sports repair guy. Buffed the high points of the pits out of the head. Then he filled on the low points with JB weld. Then buffed again so it was smooth. I was very sceptical of this repair But it was a much cheaper fix then buying a new head. He also guaranteed that if it failed he would rebuild the engine with a new head. Well it's been 6 winters and about 4,000 miles and no issues. Made me a believer

Hello PF, The various tests that you’re conducting are very basic by design but pure genius in the well thought out way that you conclude your test and present the amazing results. What you’re doing could be called a scientific art form for the logical mind. You explain every step of your project in a way that even the self proclaimed web experts should be able to understand. And above all else, on the rare occasions that you make a mistake , you don’t hesitate to mention it and that speaks volumes about your integrity. I ran across your ingenious activities by chance while browsing through this sea of brain dead geeks doing silly things to amuse their simple minds. Now I’m having a difficult time attempting to move on to anything else. Your projects yield results that can used

I had an old FZ 700 Yamaha sport bike as a young man. The type with half a fairing and the lower part of the engine sticking out. One day I dropped her at a car wash and cracked the casted oil cover on the engine. It broke into at least 10 pieces and most of those went down the huge drainage grate! All the oil leaked out and had to call a buddy with a pick up to bring her home. Yamaha wanted $200 bucks for that little ashtray sized piece of pot metal and back in the late 80's that was a WHOLE WEEKS paycheck for me! So I grabbed a few packs of the old school JB weld, Filled in the giant whole in the oil cover then sanded the inside out to clear everything. I smoothed the outside to a perfect oval original shape then painted it black. It looked FACTORY made and I just wanted it to hold for a few months till I saved up the money to buy a new one. Well never bought a new one because that sucker lasted the 4 years I owed her, Not a single LEAK! JB Weld has been in my tool box since then! Great Vid!

Would have liked to see how long it would have lasted! I also was curious as to how you made that spark plug work considering they usually use the metal they screw into ALSO as the conductor of the negative polarity of the power that make im them spark. Did you achieve that through those two adjacent metal O rings that sit on top of your homemade cylinder head, one of which sat around the spark plug? (BTW, is an O-ring the same as a washer?)
@GGigabiteM
@GGigabiteM 9 месяцев назад
If you rewatch the video, you can see the washer under the spark plug is sparking across the washer held in by the head bolt, that's how it's working. Not exactly safe, but it works.

why just one min why didn't you let it run for long btw you should have checked if engine is overheating with this head as this won't be a good conductor of heat and due to bad heat transfer engine could over heat

Wide open throttle, Great question! I don't wan't to hurt this engine. I need it for future videos. There's no way for JB Weld to disperse the heat. I don't care about the JB weld as much as I do about safeguarding the engine. Thanks for watching the video and commenting!

Try installing a box with a SPDT switch and a momentary normally open switch. Black lead from drill press to center pole of SPDT. Wire one side to the momentary and attach short wires to the unused terminals of both switches. Wire nut the 2 short wires to the black wire of the plug. Put the tap in the drill press and set the SPDT so the drill doesn’t run. You can bump the momentary switch to barely move the drill allowing you to tap a perfectly straight hole. I was waiting to see how you were going to make the cooling fins for the JB head... LOL! I really enjoy your videos because they are informative, entertaining, and they make me think! Keep up the good work and, as always, thank you for your service!

Crystalline solids have well-defined edges and faces, diffract x-rays, and tend to have sharp melting points. In contrast, amorphous solids have irregular or curved surfaces, do not give well-resolved x-ray diffraction patterns, and melt over a wide range of temperatures.
