I've always been told that my casting type is Unemployable Actor (M/25-35), apparently I'm very believable as someone who can't act.

You are the semi-quirky person who delivers the exposition that tells the protagonist that they need to change the one thing in their life in order to further the plot. In a semi-goofy way. Either as a doctor, officer, or a friend (this one is likely the one to get you the most screen time). But this is based on watching your videos, not your headshots

A bonus to finding out your type is learning what fashions you can get away with. My type is ‘reclusive, eccentric academic’ and once I realised that, I leaned into the eccentric clothes that go with the role, and people respond well to it. So I tried the Silent video typing experiment for a month and I have to say, it was totally worth it. So this is me according to the internet: "a deer caught in headlights" "helps with Math homework and watches Stranger Things" "girl who likes horses and used to bark/meow to people in middle school" "stalker, obssessive, cold" but also "open and friendly" Age: 14 - 30 (also "possibly immortal") #Quiet_kid #Nice #Brainy #Intelligent #Young #Sweet #Creative #Shy #awkward #Educated I definitely recommend everyone to try this out! And thanks for everyone who filled out my survey. I really enjoyed reading all the replies.
@johnladuke6475

I actually needed to stop and recover for a moment there, I laughed so hard. Someone you have never met, with only visual information, decided that your defining personality features are horse-obsession and barking/meowing at humans. I came to this video for the morbid curiosity of strangers' strange impressions, and learned career advice for actors instead. I'm glad you've given me this chance to wonder what exactly was wrong with your respondant (or wrong with your video?), and what other semi-insane responses you got.
@dust5162
@dust5162 3 года назад
@@johnladuke6475 Yeah, it was funny. xD Sure, between the many replies (I actually managed to get 400 during the year or so, people are so kind!) there were many general descriptions, but honestly I really enjoyed the creative ones the most. I would say it's something from our past that defines what we think of a person just by looking at them. Plus also the factors of the video itself. Like my hand was a bit shaky and at beginning I wasn't smiling, then decided to smile at the end - that threw a lot of people off (either they said it was really creepy or that the smile made me seem much more friendly). Anyways, it was really interesting experiment for me, even though I don't really plan on being an actress.

Geek culture is a loving living thing, as is RU-vid culture and it's lobes in particular languages and intersections. I think this is presenting as oneself, accentuated for and within her particular cultural mix. We're not always aware where words we use come from, just how they feel. I don't think it's necessarily got an etymology of everything in the matrix of carefully constructed character acting, I think that's pretty insulting in a way. But I dunno. There's a slightly reckless-seeming tone here that suggested that potential for insult or being perceived as offish was understood.

@johnladuke6475
@johnladuke6475 3 года назад
That's what words are, after all. It's a matter of time before the various dictionary people decide that a new phrase has been coined into the lexicon, and dooblydoo means expandable description box.
@dementiasorrow
@dementiasorrow 3 года назад
@@johnladuke6475 Sometimes the word created is completely made up. Like "dooblydoo" and it has no internal meaning. Most of the time words are created based on other preexisting words or parts of words. Even when the word is completely made up, it still follow some rules like the phonological rules of the language. What I meant was that in this case, Dooblydoo is a word made up by a known youtuber and it cought on within the community. It is more like a jargon or a slang than a General English word. It has meaning within RU-vid. It might be used outside in other platforms it might even become ubiquitous but unlike most words it is Made up and we know who did it.
@johnladuke6475
@johnladuke6475 3 года назад
@@dementiasorrow It may be different in the sense that we have a clear record of its coinage. You're also right, most "new words" follow at least some rule of language, but some are still just novel assemblies of sounds. If you push the concept to the extreme, though... all words began as just an agreed set of grunts.

honestly, I find this really interesting because as a neurodiverse person, I've cultivated a very specific affect that I use with people- I'm a lot less direct, I dial-up approachableness, make sure I come across as warm and bubbly. I often get people getting a very different initial read from me because this affect is designed to mask my disability.

I've like all of your videos. Not so much this one, and not because I think what you've created/shared here is bad. Let me explain. Casting type is very dependent on the biases of the people who respond to this. Unfortunately, our industry has a really limited number of people "deciding" what your type is, and even more unfortunately, they rarely check their biases. So, what I'm saying is this. This is a really cool experiment. The trends you experience are probably true for casting directors, but I think how it doesn't help, is it can subconsciously tell you what roles not to go for, because "you don't fit that type". I think ultimately, that limits you as an actor. I'm not sure it's the best way to build your craft. I was told by dozens of people that I should play Indonesian, or South East Asian. As an actually South Asian, I can tell you, I really should not.

Great video! Summary of your results: "Every genre needs a pet geek girl" ah, bah. Hmm. But if you know 'geek girls' (not that I agree with this term) they (EDIT: well, many) can turn their hand to plumbing (depending on how and whether dyspraxia, autoimmune or connective tissue disorders, other neurodivergent conditions, plus sexism, ableism, anxiety and confidence may affect things) - it's just people probably think of Mario and Luigi and their human equivalents, because the 'sweetspot' for *the role* is affected by societal biases... and Nintendo. But the right casting director could possibly put you in that type of role anyway, especially if they saw this!? Anyway, slightly jealous, of that vibe, I'm not sure if I'm obviously anything to anyone. Although I think I'm a nonbinary bisexual person who looks quite like a lesbian. Sadder note, I'm not sure if that was a dig at Elliot Page and trans nonbinary in general!? To include them from before he updated his look and came out gender-wise!? When they came out as lesbian/attracted to women they had noted that it was something they'd avoided before afraid of being typecast, but something about the roles he had already been cast for seemed to hint at the vibe. When they came out it was hard for me for a few days as I had my femme side/vibe pegged to him somehow through that, although I have never seen any of their work properly, just clips and film posters. It's funny how any kind of gender performance variance - if you're not a cookie cutter femme or masc type, whatever that is and whether people pick that out can be so subtle I feel - it can come with a sweetspot of other people's baggage. A veritable plumber's bag of it! But not necessarily as useful, because how well that sort of character is written and how specific a fit it is can vary a lot. Like the gay neighbour in "it's so romantic" plays about with. And it's something worth noting that identity conscious casting is becoming more of a thing, a demand from the viewing public. And from identities marginalised in the acting community. Audience with marginalised identity is what I am really. Just might think about acting sometimes. And I'm a bit too variously neurodiverse and addled I my mental health to cope with much as it is. Ah, me. Anyway wishing you the best and hoping for a positive response re Eliot Page. I understand that this video might be old, I didn't check the date or description for any notes on this. And you don't have to respond directly, this video has a lot of comments so I could just melt into a background sea of all-comers.

Don't you think there are various characters who are constants (fix points ;) ) across the different genres (?) you listed?

I am, apparently, terrifying and off-putting. I am also an INTJ and prefer not to speak, but I watch everything. I also have an extremely strict moral code. So I guess I'm the one that everyone thinks is the villain but am actually working in secret against the villain. Or maybe I'm a nun. (Except that I'm, you know, also a mother.)

If my hithertofore unfinished novel ever becomes a movie there is a part for a red haired female protagonist who is in recovering drug addict get an accounting degree while in prison marries a farmer but before she can live happily ever after as a wife and mom she has the solve the crime that she was framed for years ago if I get a movie deal I will probably give you a call

I personally wouldn't mind seeing you in a period drama where there's swordfighting involved. Maybe you can be a teacher with a handy blade kept under her desk for when the conflict happens LOL I don't think I have a casting type, aside from perhaps 'intimidating'. People seem to be intimidated by me IRL, I think because I'm a sizeable (tall and wide) woman with a weird face. Maybe I could be the 'vaguely ethnic female bouncer' at the drag club LOL

Well I didn't know and still don't really care about casting type. I was actually hoping for a bit more colourful of a response from the world at large and your justifiably indignant but hilariously sarcastic response. Although now that you've explained it I wonder if you might get more input on both your range and core attributes with less flattering media. If a simple lighting change can make you a drug addict, the candid snap that you *definitely* didn't allow to make it to facebook might make you a whole different person. Also I think you should try auditioning for roles as a tall black man with a French accent, or maybe a little Chinese boy. You never succeed if you don't try.

Other people read the comments too, so I recommend sticking to English unless you really can't express yourself good enough. In that case I recommend practice or deepl.com (a very good ai based translator)

I have literally had people say this exact thing to me. There was someone who I had to apologize to in college cause she apparently seriously thought I hated her or she did something to offend me. In actuality it's very difficult to offend me, I just am very nervous in conversation, and I guess to a lot of people that comes accross as distain/dislike. It's a good thing to know about yourself though. And since then I've been able to work on my conversational skills, so as far as I can tell people don't think I'm just incredibly spiteful anymore, so that's good. Oh, the other things I've been told is that people thought I was haughty or "preppy". Although, that was quite a few years ago, so I'm not so sure if it still applies.

In my opinion Jill Bearup for DC roles: Possible Major and Minor Roles: For Batman Poison Ivy, Batgirl/Oracle, Dr. Leslie Thompson, Arkham Asylum psychairtrist. (Sorry you look too tall to be Harley) GCPD detective, Superman: Mercy Graves the bodyguard and secretary of Lex Luther, Lab worker or scientist. Wonder Woman: Cheetah Barbara Minerva, Artemis, or one of the amazons. The Flash: Possibly Jessie Quick.

We just need to cast Jill in a period mystery as a well-read mother who leads a epistolary double life as a male natural philosopher no-one has actually met (this being a period drama in which few men would take a mother seriously no matter how intelligent she actually is) while solving crimes that occasionally involve combat with criminals and henchmen.

Hm. I'm seeing a mid-tier made-for-tv sci-fi drama, honestly. Something on ScyFy, filmed in Canada, for a middling budget in the mid-2000's, that managed to get a bit of a cult following before being cancelled after 2 seasons.
