I think people are overlooking the fact that Larsen detested Fischer and the pair were great rivals, only recently Larsen had played as board one for The Rest of the World Vs USSR match with Fischer as board two. Larsen had been very critical of Fischer not only for his play but personally too, so Larsen felt he had something to prove in this match, losing 6 - 0 was not acceptable to him. Opting for Bird's opening was likely an attempt to draw Fischer onto less well known ground to him, but with Larsen being considered an expert in 'flank openings' it is far less a strange choice than it appears at first glance.
There was a period from 1965-1968 where Fischer was probably the strongest player in the world. The only reason why he didn't become world champion sooner was his odd tantrums. By the time of the USSR vs The World in 1970, Fischer had basically been out of top level chess for 2 years. This is what allowed Larsen to lobby for board one. Larsen was probably of the opinion that Fischer would be out of form. Going 3/4 against Petrosian and crushing the Interzonal should have dispelled this myth, but Larsen still thought of himself as the best non-soviet. He did, after all, go 1.5/3 against Spassky and put fear into the Soviets that he could win game 4 against their world champion. However, there's no real way to look at the evidence and claim Larsen was even equal to Fischer after about 1963.
Okay I've heard about this Bobby Fischer guy before and heard that he's good but I was like "how good can he be really?" and then I saw this series and holy shit this is what Bobby Fischer is - the absolute machine. Thank you so much for expanding my vast knowledge mate.
@@sokolkristollari7895 20 game winning streak, 12-0 vs 2 top teir players and his 3rd opponent 6½/2½ vs Tigran with 4 wins in row on him; so Ficher crushed him as well, something Karpov an Kasperov couldn't do vs an older Tigran. He had a 11-0 in the US chess championship 63/64. And then in the Herceg Novi unofficial blitz tournament in 1970, considered one of the greatest blitz tournaments ever held, Ficher scored 19/22, 4 an half points ahead of Tal for first place, and his only loss was to Korchnoi which he split with him, and he beat all the Russians that played in that tournament 8½/1½. And in all 22 games from Herceq, Fischer only spent 2 an half minutes per game as they didn't have time increments then either. Then many months later in a Manhattan blitz tournament, Ficher scored 21½/22, and with those two blitz tournaments, he would of had a 2950 rating, and the obvious other achievements like 8-0 vs Nigel Short an what have you.
As I've said, I sat near Larsen when he won a big international tournament in Snowmass, Co. before this match. He had no problems with altitude or anything else then. Larsen's only real problem was facing the great Bobby Fischer over the board in 1971. Wonderful analysis of these games! Bravo!!
Looking back at your older videos, you seem so much more confident and open to your community.. Keep up the great work and attitude, highly appreciated by all of us!
Fischer was of course by far the better player than Larsen, not because Larsen was a weak player, but because Fischer was far above any other player. But even keeping this in mind, 6:0 was not a olausible result. Larsen was just mentally destroyed and losed faith in his own abilities at some point.
Not only that but the more games you lose the more you are pressured because drawing all other games isnt enough you simply have to win and the more you lose the more you have to win. This spiral of mental destruction is what imo caused the drop. Larsen simply had no other choice but to play for win every game with the sharpest lines but simply he couldnt do it.
Hey Antonio, after showing the 1972 match between Fischer and Spassky, it would be interesting to also show their 1992 rematch. That would certainly increase our vast knowledge! #suggestion
Fischer's score of 17½ out of 30 (counting draws) against Spassky, rated 2545 at the time, gave him a performance rating of 2645,[10] which would have put him at No. 12 in the world on the July 1992 list. Yasser Seirawan believed that the match proved that Fischer's playing strength was "somewhere in the top ten in the world". Kasparov himself was dismissive of Fischer, stating that "Bobby is playing OK, nothing more. Maybe his strength is 2600 or 2650. It wouldn't be close between us He never lost his skill just his stamina ( age ) He retreated to Iceland and trained the Polgar sisters to be the strongest female players . Ever
🤔 Bird’s Opening is a good choice if you’re just playing for fun instead of serious. Nobody has the moves analyzed deep into the game. For Bird’s you just wing it.
Yes, this tempo is not so useful because black can play Nh6 and without tempo black must play Nf6 because he doen't have something useful and he can't pass a move :D
When I started playing I looveed to play English, then I changed it because I started to learn much theory and wanted to use that in openings where you can win like that. My coach had a method where first learning principles and tactics and only then theory. So I started with English and Queen's Indian.
I just love fischer, my only dislike about him is the fact that he didn't allow cameras.... How nice it would have been for us to see them in video, or a collection of pictures. Poor Antonio only had one pic to show in this entire Larson vs fischer series.... Damn you Bobby 😣
Coming back to how Korchnoi was a tougher opponent was Petrosian than Larsen was for Fischer (which he most likely was, Korchnoi has a very good score against all top Soviet players including World Champions except for Karpov and - from those few games he played with - against Kasparov), I went and check the ratings list. Curiously the Jan 1971 list, which still was in effect during those matches, Fischer is rated 2740 (#1 in the world), Petrosian 2640 (#5) and Korchnoi AND Larsen are tied for the 3rd place on the list with 2660. So even ratings agree, even though in a weird manner - both Fischer and Tigran were playing opponents of supposedly the same strength, but for Fischer his opponent was rated 100 lower and for Petrosian his was rated 20 point higher. On the July lists (right after these matches), Fischer gained 20 points to reach 2760 (#1), Petrosian stayed at 2640 (5=), Korchnoi gained 10 to reach 2670 (#3) and Bent Larsen stayed on 2660 and #4. Those aside, it turns out that outside or the player rated #2 in the world (WC Spassky at 2690), the final four contenders were the other top 4 players from the world's top 5.
Morphy Tal Alekhine Kasparov had More beautiful games than Fischer! Fischer beat the weakest chess World champion Boris Spassky only 17 wins 10 losses! Karpov beat Spassky 13-1! Capablanca would beat Spassky easily 8 wins 6 draws zero losses! Carlsen would beat Spassky easily 6 wins 6 draws zero losses! The highest tournament elo rating score is Fabiano Caruana 8,5/10 StLouis elo 3100! Karpov 11/13 Linares 1994 elo score 3040! Alekhine in San Remo 1930 elo score 3040! Fischer his best tournament score only 2990! Karpov has won over 160 super grand Master tournaments! Fischer won zero only inter zonals 1962 1970!, there were no the top Ten players tournaments that ERA! Fischer was Second in Santa Monica 1966 behind blunder maker Spassky! Fischer did not won Havanna 1965! The Best greatest should be whos moves computers think the longest to solve! Fischer is not favourite because computers solved Fischer moves easily! Stockfish 16 would beat Fischer 999-1 easily!!
Watching bobby fisher player is such a pleasure, it’s hard to imagine how his mind works. LIKE HOW DO YOU WIN ALL OF THOSE GAMES WITHOUT ONE LOSS. I go on lichess and lose 5 games before I win one 😂 thanks agadmator for this series I love it!
I have seen almost all GJ chess tricks series beside Agadmators every video and my rating is horrible, especially in blitz (actually it dropped from 1600 to 1200, rapid dropped to 1400, only classical remains 1700 and puzzles rose to 1800)...I think my brain simply haven't used to work fast because I've never played blitz games...anyway, I feel quite dumb 😰
I started playing chess 1 year ago and my rating increased from 900 to 1500 (in chess.com) ..I have seen my graph ...it was increasing slowly in beginning but after 4 months when I started watching this channel I learned a lot of things and increased rapidly...
I would like to see a series on Lasker, since no one before or since ever played in the style of Lasker. It was never said about any other great chess player that it was hard to play against his bad moves!!!!
SUPER CHESS GAMES BY THE BEST CHESS PLAYER EVER-DEAR BOBBY FISCHER/GOD SUPER MAGIC!! I MISS YOU BOBBY FISCHER!!!THANKS FOR SHARE DEAR RADIC-SHARE MORE BOBBY AND MORPHY GAMES WILL YOU??THANKS IN FRONT!!!
#suggestion @agadmator can you cover this game, from utut adianto one of the strongest Indonesian grandmasters. I think you have enough subscribers from Indonesia, and also I think you have never covered an Indonesian chess grandmaster ... I think the beauty of this game is worthy of your coverage... Alexander Baburin (2530) vs Utut Adianto (2510) Liechtenstein (1993), LIE Queen's Gambit Accepted: Normal Variation (D25)
@agadmator would you ever consider doing some chess basics/tutorials of any kind for any level of play? I know it's a little off from normal to do that type of material for you, but I think many would enjoy learning some chess techniques/strategies or guides from you personally as you are very entertaining!
Agadmator- as you head toward the epic Spassky-Fischer series I hope you have access to the great book "Russians vs. Fischer" A fantastic resource for the chess fanatic! I am and I have it.
Picture in newspaper at 13:30 can't be from game 6. Board never had that position in game 6. Maybe they had to use stock photos if Bobby wouldn't allow cameras?
The fact that Fischer basically invented the modern chess clock, an entirely new and recognized game of Fischer Random, the complete annihilation of the soviet chess machine single handedly, and the fact he was 120-130 points ahead of his closest competition cements the fact for that period of time, without any debate or question, he was and is the greatest chess player who ever lived..I think you need a category for "Other" when talking about the greatest ..in other words, Fischer was of course without question and for all time the greatest: but who could be classified below him? Watching Magnus play is like kissing ur sister.. his games are uninspired, robotic, obviously computer theory, and little to no creativity
Magnus wins because he plays the engine moves better. He doesn't make a mistake forgetting what move the engine would make. Most chess players now never think they just move the piece they are supposed to. The engine takes out any thought of, "let's move this piece." You don't move a piece trying a different defense or attack now. You move what the engine says you to move. The loser of a game makes a mistake. Getting away from the engine. Magnus pretty much never makes that mistake. As Fischer never much made a mistake to lose a game. Magnus bores his way to a match win. But that's the way chess it played now. The player that loses misses an engine move. The other didn't.
Hey when you have a moment can you do Maroczy vs Tartakower from 1922. I would really love to see your take on the game! Thank you for all your videos!!! #suggestion
The greatest myth in chess is that pieces defend each other. They constantly allow the piece to die that they are supposedly defending. They are great at retaliating. But defending not so much.
HELP! i found a position from a spassky game in a book published in 1974 however ive looked online everwhere and there is no record of the game anywhere. how can i find this game?
What an amazing series! Imagine the slow creeping death crawling upon Larsen game after game! Uggghhhh I would not want to be in his position. Fischer truly is the best or at least he is in the conversation.
I know this is a year old post, but I don't see the position on the photo at the end in the actual chess game. Does Fischer ever have a bishop in H8? Am I missing something.
The newspaper photo....was that Fischer and Larsen doing a post-mortem? In the game there was never a white pawn on f6 or black bishop on h8...I think that did happen in an earlier game, though?
I know! I thought I was seeing things... but none of the other games between Larsen and Fischer seem to have reached that position... I'm also thinking the photo is probably post game analysis or something, as the position resembles that game, but slightly.
I remember when Botvinnik wrote a book about grunfield or something and then Fisher just crushed it using a move not considered in the book. Writing the book was a huge mistake xD
You could have mentioned that at the end Larsen's knight is trapped, and white has a back rank weakness looming when black plays g3. So what happens if white tries to extricate himself by Re7+ Kg6 Nxh7. I think Fischer was making the point OK, so I'll refute your attacking ideas and the best you can get is a draw. If you persist in trying to win, you''ll lose. Probably to show that there was never any chance of Larsen beating him. But I am not inside his head, so what do I know?
Hi, is there a maximum rating an individual can ever attain in chess? a player with 1800 ratings on lichess is he or she a GM? If not what category is he/she? Thanks
Hello agadmator, I got a question. Why is at 7:06 min black not in a good position? Would moving the black knight from c4 to d3 not be a good move? Best regards and thank you for your work on youtube!
C4 to D3 isn’t a possible move by the knight. He could go either to D2 or E3. But if the knight is moved, even to E3 to fork the rooks, D1 attacks the bishop which could threaten checkmate if they capture the rook on F1. So the threat doesn’t materialize
Sir can you suggest me some good books or a good way to learn chess. I started playing in december 2019 and i reached 1600 rating in lichess. Need some preparations now. Any suggestions would do.Thank you.
Before the match Larsen predicted that he would win with a score of 6-5. It's amazing how almost everyone in the chess world at that time underestimated Fischer's strength. He was definitely in a class by himself.
@@davidcopson5800 The scoring was first player to get 6 points wins. So Larsen thought they would be tied 5-5 and he would win the next game. It was an embarrassing prediction.
