The concept behind a 100-year window is, quite simply, to make a window that will last and perform for 100 years. How did Brent’s idea come about, and exactly how are 100-year windows made? We’ll explore a variety of job-site install details.

Great stuff. Would love to see one of these windows in person. But one thing about insulated windows - they are much more comfortable when you're next to them. Single pane absolutely puts a chill in the air when you're next to it. Double/triple pane isn't just about R value.

The window manufacturer is called hull works and the windows passed astm air infiltration tests and meets u value standards. You can get a single 1/8 in tick piece of glass or a Pilkington’s Spacia Vacuum Insulated Glass.

Sound transmission is a major issue and along with draftiness in cold weather and price make this a tough sell. And it isn't like losing a seal on insulated glass destroys the window. It just looks bad.

I know in the custom world prices are custom but a ballpark figure or broad range would be helpful for example depending on size windows go for $3000 to $10000 would at least give people an idea of cost of this level of quality

When I moved into my current rental house, one of the vinyl windows had mechanically failed and the landlord replaced it with another vinyl window. One for the landfill now, and another for the landfill in 20 years. I will never, ever buy vinyl windows. The thing I wish people would understand about storm windows is that they aren't a band-aid for bad windows, but an important part of a resilient, long-lasting window system. It's so much better in the long term for both maintenance costs and the environment than the double- or triple-glazed windows that have been so hyped for the last 30-40 years.
@tmdttpc
@tmdttpc Год назад
Just like anything I'm sure there is a bell curve in quality of vinyl windows from the cheap box store to custom made. I don't get the hate from the speaker in the video. It sounds to me like he (and possible you) live in a bubble where everyone is making $500k a year and can afford these expensive windows. And TBH, I didn't even know storm windows were even made these days.
@Shako_Lamb
@Shako_Lamb Год назад
@@tmdttpc I'm a grad student in a rental house from a family that lives paycheck-to-paycheck so I'm the demographic that would normally like cheap options like vinyl windows. But I also know that vinyl, a petrochemical, has a terrible environmental impact, and broken and discarded vinyl building materials contribute to plastic waste. I also simply see them as a terrible investment and a maintenance liability in the long-term, and unlikely to return their investment if they're replacing older windows. Sure, different vinyl windows are made with different levels of "quality," but all of them have terribly short lifespans for a building material, and all of them are total unsalvageable junk once they fail. As Brent Hull said in the video, the window companies want you to throw away and replace your entire window. The building industry is just another contributor to the throw-away, disposable culture we have right now. Options that are appealing for being cheap and inexpensive are instead polluting the environment and creating maintenance nightmares down the road. I applaud Brent for engineering the 100-year window, and see the best-case scenario as the rest of the industry moving in that direction and bringing the cost way down. And yes, they're very expensive up front, but they're highly repairable and maintainable by anyone with basic handy skills. I know how to repair wood windows, I took a workshop for it a couple years ago. Hence why it's a 100-year window. And yes, storm windows are still very much on the market today, and they're far better in both up-front cost and long-term investment than buying a whole house's worth of vinyl replacement windows.

"'Only about 30% of our energy loss goes out windows and doors." 30% is A LOT, especially if you have gone to the trouble to build an air-tight home. If wood is the key, It looks like glass (insulated or not) remains the achilles heel. R1 windows in 2023 is simply unacceptable. Where can we find a Hull 100-Year Window with the Pilkington Spacia vacuum insulated glass to achieve R4 - R7?

I learned a significant amount from this video. Ipe wood frames, notched/grooved weather stripping, could solve all my local problems. Please send clients to hire us… Price really drives the designer/builder/architect “what can we build on this budget?” discussion. Square footage v window cost becomes a difficult part of the dreaming phase for the customer. $15-20k is not a small difference. Here in San Diego, cheaply priced windows that meet code allow splurges elsewhere. Love the quality option, need well-heeled, sophisticated customer to choose the expensive single pane stuff over the fiberglass double pane stuff.

I haven't been a fan of these window videos for some time now. Every video from Brent on windows has been about just using single pane because it's not worth getting insulated glass but if you watch other videos on the Build Network, or just from Matt himself, they explain that getting double or triple pane is worth it for apparent comfort. How are we supposed to reconcile this? I do appreciate that Brent mentioned vacuum sealed windows as a valid option for double pane, but I don't think just bashing insulated windows outright is the solution.

I'm in the same boat, I watch these videos to learn more about best practices that have been forgotten, rather than a desire for a new house with a "history". I think the bit about steps on the window sill, to stop the water from running up the sill is a great observation that I don't see these days.

I think Brent is focusing on longevity and beauty while Matt focuses wholly on comfort and efficiency. Lovability is the number one aspect of building longevity because people take care of and preserve things they love. Longevity is the number one aspect of eco-friendliness so they’re just two ways of coming to the same goal. This is my most watched channel so I love Matt’s content but many people don’t live by the high tech climate controlled lifestyle so there’s room for both. Baczek and Lstiburek are great but they’re different philosophies than Hull, Duany, Mouzon etc. There’s room for both. Just my opinion.

lets agree to disagree on the single glazed window. When you have to pay the bill to heat (or cool) the house, double or triple glazed window are a no brainer. Sure it's easier to replace a single glazed window, but there is a reason why it's a building requirement to have at least double glazed window in most developed countries. And yes the new windows might fail earlier, but if they are twice cheaper you are still in a good position. When you build a house, windows are a big cost, and so paying cheaper windows will remain the go to solution for most I think.

It's not true you can always change the window glass itself. Even our old double pane glasses from the 1970's in a PVC frame tilt and swing style which is typical here in Germany I can take of the frames and the NBR rubber seal and replace the glass. If it fits you can replace it with a triple pane glass smaller air seal but it's possible. Only reason why they often change the whole window is, when you insulate your old house you need to bring your windows to another level too. The PVC frame got on old windows mostly two luckily three air chambers today you get minimum 5 to 7 chambers the reinforced inner steel square tubes are also available but you can switch to fiberglass square frame all in all the frame got a much better R value plus the window glass too, an Insulated house should get a three pane glass to meet the whole R value of the house. The week spot should be always the glass because the water in the air should condensate always on the glass not in the corner of the walls, this is at least here in Germany called the isothermic. But condensation on triple glass windows is tricky almost impossible, but this fellows one pane glass is more a pita to me he's trying to stick to the old fashion. On old not insulated houses which mostly are government or state or county owned and not insulated it is okay but for a private use in a modern house stick to the new PVC multi chamber. On the end of the day you gotta pay your energy bill. My two cents and I'm not a window guy I just made my homework on our old brick and mortar house from 1900 here in Germany. Greetings from overseas

I never thought true divided double-paned windows looked bad at all. I legitimately think the thick, real mullions look BETTER, more sophisticated, and more substantial than the newer style. I realize there are advantages to the new window, but looks are not one of them.

The irony is that because new homes have so few windows, these are relatively affordable overall. What spec builders do is sell houses cheaply and pass the true costs to future owners who don't understand why they should have to replace windows at any cost. My house is 83 years old. Original windows. They do require maintenance and "rebuilding," but that's ALWAYS cheaper than buying a crappy new one.
@petercharles6462

I sell "modern" windows for a living. Expect to replace new windows every 25 years. I am restoring the 120 year old windows in my house. I fully expect them to last another 120 years. If you look at the long view and the energy cost to make new windows, traditional windows suddenly become the least expensive option.

Love all the information / knowledge / experience and examples. Very good stuff and definitely relevant to todays home owners. Constructive criticism: the pace is a bit fast. Slow down a little be it through his speech or the editing, or a combo of the two. Give audience a chance to breathe a little. Pace should match the feel of wandering through an old home or museum, observing quietly. Keep ‘em coming, i am entertained.

8:51 original growth wood is becoming scarce resulting in high prices and affordability to those who are the top 5%. I owned a 4-plex built in the 30’s whose architecture was available to the middle class. There is too much disparity between the rich and the poor and a declining middle class.

"this putty glazing i a sacrificial product" - that's a lost art form. you could replace a single pane easily. now our products are built to "last" for a set time, then get completely replaced.. which should alarm us as resources get more and more sparse. We need a return to "build to last".

My first ever DIY project was to repair broken glass in a NYC apartment. Single-pane weighted wood sash. Very satisfying to clean it up, lay new glass, insert points, and cover with putty. I learned that it is better to repair than to replace. Decades later I now believe: if you start with a product that will last longer but can be repaired later, that's the best option.

Very interesting video. I can't realy argue with what is said, especially regarding the architecture and ecstatics. One minor issue I have is how the scenes of the condensate on the windows is used in a negativ context at 17:35 and 18:20. Condensate forms on cold surfaces and single pane windows are colder then insulated windows - so it doesn't really make sence here.
