Set during the English Civil War, A Field In England follows a not-so-merry band of deserters who travel together in search of freedom and beer. It soon becomes apparent that these troubled souls are being led on a more dangerous quest, involving buried treasure, evil alchemy and mind-altering mushrooms.
Directed by modern British legend Ben Wheatley, A Field In England oozes style and atmosphere. It became infamous for its insane editing during 'trip' sequences, and features a stellar cast including Reece Shearsmith and Michael Smiley on top form.
This is the 94th episode of the RU-vid series, 100 YEARS OF HORROR, by Haunted Blowfish. The series highlights one horror film per year for a century, from 1920 to 2019.

From a yankee, very good review mate. This film was shown to me by a Scottish woman of mine and I fell in love with it. Truly great and deep to those who are receptive to it. Gave me an understanding of Britian's heart I never had before.

Thank you, and it is nice to hear that the film is appreciated by those outside the UK! I get the sense online that the director's prior film Kill List has been slowly gaining traction in the US over the years but I still feel Field gets sadly overlooked.

A bewitching gem of a film. I also watched it on the day of release (sadly not at the cinema) and absolutely loved it. Criminally underrated I think.

Indeed, 'underrated' as a term is thrown around a lot but this is probably the definitive underrated film

Haha, I mean these sinister psychedelic tent shenanigans would explain a lot of the behaviors of that era's rock bands

Excellent to have found your video about this lovely film. Also very timely as only last night I found this film is streaming on Kanopy and watched it again. My drummer friend and I here in Texas love this film and I have seen it many times. Seeing it on the big screen would have been sueno, but we were satisfied to see it from a dvd I borrowed from my library. Not sure what kind of release/reception the film would have got here, but if our experience is indicative of anything, then a good time was had by all. Open up and let the devil in is what I will say when next I drink tequila and or eat wild shrooms. Cheers!

Thank you, always great to meet another fan of this magical little movie. Yeah the film absolutely still 'works' watching it at home but if you ever get the chance to see it in the big screen, I can't reccomend it enough!

Been wanting to watch/rewatch all of Ben Wheatley's films since I found out he's doing the sequel to that Jason Statham flick The Meg. Never seen Field in England but I just might tobtry it sooner or later based on your recommendation.

Ha yes! Him making a giant shark movie is like Christmas come early, should be fun! And yeah, as is probably quite evident from the review, A Field in England is definitely my favourite movie in his filmography. It is weird as hell, and therefore won't be to everyone's tastes, but I personally can't recommend it enough. It's nice to hear that I've helped push at least one person towards watching it!

@@hetbigboy speaking of Hong Kong cinema did you watch The Sadness or Project Wolf Hunter??? Holy Shit!, were those films badass!! Non stop in your face action, gore, and intensity. I gotta say I loved every minute of them! They were way better than Train To Busain, I just don’t get everyone’s high praise of that film, is it good? More or Less yes, but is it as good as people make it out to be? I didn’t think so....... How’d you like it?

Well I’m glad you loved the film and you explained it very well, but I gotta say I hated it, it’s just not my cup of mushroom tea! I didn’t like The Witch, The Lighthouse, or A field In England. I recognize that they’re all 3 great films in their own right, shot stylistically and damn near perfectly, they all have brilliant actors and seemingly simple but drawn out and well played stories. I just didn’t like them, I guess I’m more of an in-your-face kind of horror guy, who enjoys carnage and intensity and unknown thrills around every corner. I just don’t prefer “Elevated Horror” at all, although I did like Midsommar which definitely falls into that category. I must say Kill List was Fucking brilliant and worked on every level for me! Sight Seers was ma decent novelty, I didn’t really care for Free Fire or In The Earth at all. I’ve yet to see Down Terrace it is on my watch list for I Love British Gangster Films, The Long Good Friday and Get Carter are 2 of my all time favorite films. Great Video none the less!!
@HauntedBlowfish
@HauntedBlowfish Год назад
Ah yes, The Long Good Friday and Get Carter are absolute classics; the last scene with Bob Hoskins in the car lives rent-free in my head, stressing me out at any given moment hahaha. I would warn that Down Terrace is on a much smaller scale than those 70s classics but there is still merit to be found within. Your opinions are understandable to be honest. The three horrors you listed are very polarising by nature, and The Witch was a step too far for me as well. I can appreciate the craft, like you say, but it left me very cold. The Lighthouse was a huge improvement over The Witch in my opinion, but I'm a sucker for nautical iconography and the two lead performances are stellar. Glad to hear you're a Kill List fan though!

@@HauntedBlowfish I gotta tell you I haven’t seen films as good as Long Good Friday or Get Carter in a very long long time and am glad I recently discovered them. That score on L.G.F. Is phenomenal and the performance by Hoskins is out of this world, it’s hard to believe that’s his first feature film. I just love the Gangster sub genre 1 of my favorite maybe even outright favorite films is Goodfellas. What did you think about High Rise by Wheatley, at first I didn’t much car for it but with “Fridge Logic” at work I found myself going back to it again and again. It was quite remarkable and yet so bland at the same time. I think I rather enjoyed it! Oh! I’ve recently watched “Pusher” Nicholas Winding Refn’s first film and it’s brilliant, it’s simple and quite low budget, but it’s damned good and it’s Mads Mikelson’s first feature film he’s always great! I loved Drive by Refn it’s def in my top 10. Well gotta go, take care!
@HauntedBlowfish
@HauntedBlowfish Год назад
@@ice9557 Agreed. Horror is my favourite genre (obviously), but Gangsters are potentially my second favourite. The Sopranos is my all time favourite TV show, and yeah, Scorsese's films were hugely influential for my younger self. High Rise is a strange one; I love the aesthetics and the style but at the same time, the story doesn't quite live up to its potential for me (or my expectations, maybe). I'd like to read the source material because I think that would help aid my next viewing of the film. Never got round to properly watching Pusher, but I love Mads, so I definitely need to get on that soon.
@ice9557
@ice9557 Год назад
@@HauntedBlowfish Nice! For me the wire slightly edges out The Sopranos but no doubt it was an absolutely tour de force and cultural phenomenon! I’d have to say my favorite all time tv show is probably Batman The Animated series with X-Files close behind it!
