Leicester vintage buses assembled at Victoria Park to celebrate 100 years of municipal motor buses operating in the city. The first Tilling Stevens TS6 motor bus entered service on 24 July 1924 on a new route between Charles Street and St. Phillips Church, Evington Lane in the city.
But it wasn't until 1949 that buses replaced the trams in the city. 154 ran trips along part of the original route to Evington.
The film starts with some of the buses arriving at De Montfort Hall and then departing and arriving back from trips to the Tram Depot which can be briefly seen. Many of the buses can be seen passing Victoria Park and contending with the traffic along London Road. Finally at the end of the film you can see the procession along London Road and their return from the Tram Depot. There are a few other buses which also feature in the film listed below.
A great way to mark the occasion with some classic vehicles in attendance some over 70 years old. There were trips to the Stoneygate Tram Depot in Oadby which contains some really interesting exhibits and is well worth a visit and the day ended with a grand procession of buses from the park. Thanks to the Leicester Transport Heritage Trust and their volunteers and Leicester City Council for their hard work in bringing us this event. I think you'll agree that a great selection of buses gathered all of whom had served the city well over the years.
