ziggiey lithium when in a battery is like a gel. It releases gas when it gets hot, like any other thing on the planet when it reaches its boiling point. The gas is flammable to the tiniest of sparks, the gel is flammable just as well, except lithium itself is HIGHLY reactive to water, and thus explodes. It's like throwing a chunk of potassium into a tub of water.. But much worse. It's why air fields that fly electric planes/copters usually have warnings to NOT use water to put out a fire, but instead use a bucket of sand because the only way you can put out a lithium fire is to suffocate it. Just like with oil fires.

they don't explode when dropped in a toilet or a pool because they are sealed. most even have a form of kapton around the ends as extra insurance that any heat build up wont cause the ends to magically open.

It doesn't have to be a metal. And yes, its the gas that causes a fire with a lithium battery, but adding water to it acts as a catalyst because lithium does not like water what so ever, regardless of its form. Ontop of that, the gas that comes out isn't a lithium gas, its a chemical reaction between the lithium and other chemicals inside the battery when it gets hot. It gets hot because it is short circuiting; short circuiting means the full power of the battery is being released at that time, which means electricity, which ya know, is technically a plasma when its arcing, which is super holy fucking hell hot, and ignites anything combustible...

This is a chemical fire since the battery has already spewed out everything it contained before, mainly lithium and other junk.
