As, always, thanks so much for watching and supporting my channel! If you'd like to get in on the first run of shirts, here's a link: blacktailstudioshop.com/pages/merch-drop
Also, please show us your sample process, ie the experimentation. I'm curious about the numbers, like how many variations of recipes or processes did you try? I'd watch a 3 part series on that, if it doesn't already exist.
I thought your autocorrect had accidentally kicked in, but Jable is a great name for this project. You should copyright it quick and then get Cam to trade it off you in return for a free Jable...😄
I like how this channel went from a very elegant wood working channel to the most chaotic shit you’ve seen in the woodworking community Difference between you and John malecki is he’s most likely coked up with the shit he pulls😂but you’re most likely breathing in that Portland air just got you messed up.
He deserved that table 100%. Talk about a humble man. I don't know if I like the idea of using denim, or his leather wrapping skills more! Kudos to both of you for making an amazing desk!
The main thing is that he likes it. I love this table, but I don't have space for two or more tables at home, if I had to choose, I would choose wood. This table lacks depth, something like 3D milling at a depth of 8/10, in the shape of the same jeans, with some interesting ragged relief (so that all layers can be seen) then poured with super transparent resin. Because now the table looks like it's fiberboard laminated with a single layer of denim, it doesn't feel like it's made entirely of denim.
Awesome project! Since you asked for suggestions-as an aerospace engineer, my mind jumps to vacuum infusion. It’s a pretty common technique in aircraft manufacturing, and one of the big benefits is you can completely avoid the mess of epoxy. You would basically put the whole denim stack in a sealed bag with some “flow media” as the top layer. Then you pull vacuum on the bag on one side and allow your epoxy to flow in through the other side. Once it’s fully infused, you let it cure under vacuum. Then you can peel the bag off it and ideally you have a perfect denim layup with no mess. Hope this helps!
I've seen the vacuum bag method work as a means to make micarta successfully before, using various materials and both glue and epoxy, so this would be great at a much larger scale like this desk.
LEVIS... I am absolutely speechless on so many fronts. Firstly, you tried something totally new and really struggled with it, but eventually created a masterpiece. Secondly you collaborated with an absolute artist (perfectionist) not unlike like yourself. Thirdly, you rewarded him with the gift of the work of art that you both created together. I am embarrassed that all I can do to support you is subscribing to your channel and commenting on every video of yours that I see. You are a craftsman, a gentleman and a great human being. I salute you.
Honestly, I'm not necessarily a denim enthusiast (for things other than jeans), so I was quite skeptical going into the video. I'm blown away of how much I like it. And the stitching on those legs .....wow, such craftsmanship from you both.
@@PeterPan-tb2ju still making videos here! www.youtube.com/@thomasfrankexplains 4 new videos currently in production on the main channel too. Just went on a long side-quest 😁
Awesome build. For a great mold release, spray the table lightly with scotch photo mount (not super 77) then cover with aluminum foil and build up glass/ resin from there. Foil stays stuck to resin but the whole mess will come right off the table.
In my humble opinion this is your best piece yet. The whole premise of it, the journey, the heartbreak, turning the corner and then giving it to Shaneen... Awesome!!!
Honestly appreciate how genuine you are about feeling like you’ve messed up. As someone just starting out in woodworking it often feels like everyone on RU-vid is making masterpieces and you’re the only one making mistakes. Thank you
Honestly, this kind of falls into the art category. It's super unique, and kinda wacky, but also reserved and beautiful. This is the kind of stuff that's puts you in future art history and design classes dude. Well done.
American eagle denim ….. love love love your table!!! It’s truly a work of art! The leather legs fit it like a great pair of boots… so kind of you to gift it like that! Can’t wait to see what else you come up with!
"Picasso was a horrible woodworker" is my new favorite punchline. Great project. It turned out so nice. Love the visual texture. Glad your leather partner liked it and that his wife liked it too!
Those brass fittings on the top of the desk are just perfect. They look like buttons on a pair of jeans and tie the whole theme together. Great result.
Yo honestly, the denim table came out looking real proper. The leather wrapped legs are tight and flawless. Also, using brass hardware/components and recessing them to fit flush was the icing on the cake. For real, that is a one of a kind badass looking table.
I've watched every single one of your videos, almost twice over, and this might be my favorite piece yet. I love the contrast of the blue denim and the brown leather. Very unique. Bravo.
I'm an old (87) lady that loves to watch you create! I love the look of denim for the table. It gave me the idea of making denim coasters. I got too old to sell my resin items at craft shows, so I give it all away. I think you are a great artist!
As a textile designer this would be smart for textile waste, many textile factories give the waste fabrics for free. Smaller pieces like nightstand tops for smaller pieces, you could use printed fabrics too. It's a interesting idea to use old curtains that fall apart as a table would look awesome.
@@LuQiYun Trees regrow (through saplings) within years, deforestation is the problem, the moment a tree is cut it frees up the sky for another tree to take the sunlight and then it's a race about which sapling tree grows faster to take the spot.
I think you could definitely industrially make it a useful process. Think about the Trabant body panel production, except with epoxy instead of phenolic resin - and with manually laid out strips of denim instead of shredded fuzz.
That's why he said deforestation is the problem. That's the complete removal of forest. Cutting down trees to use for limber and paper is usually not bad. They don't kill the entire landscape. They just take the mature trees, which, like he said, allows saplings to mature.
I like grey denim, so I’d love to see a desk in that shade. This desk is amazing, and the warm/cool colour contrast is perfect. More denim projects please!
I'm a carpenter and avid wood worker. Yet ... (I can't believe I'm saying this) I think this is one of my favorite projects you've done. Turned out amazing. Keep making👍
I don't have a favourite brand, but as a sewist, I love love love this concept for a sewing table! Every component just makes absolute sense. I hope you make more of these!
The denim, leather, brass combo table is an instant classic and would fit in almost any casual space. I love the fact that the denim slab could be used as stock to make parts. I can see people using it for automotive trim pieces, gun stocks and grips and even jewelery. And you haven’t even scratched the surface of different colors or tie dyed denim.
I don’t have a favorite brand of denim but that Picasso joke I actually laughed out loud at. Also, your relationship with your videographer is awesome. Also, giving the desk where you did was the perfect move and the whole process from the nightmare starting to the beautiful end product was a delight.
This was so beautiful! I thought a denim desk was going to look tacky but wow! The depth to the colours looks amazing. Even if it isn't "perfect", it is definitely a piece of art.
I do not know how your video popped up in my account, but as a crafter, sewer, and thrifty recycler... I watched every second! This process was so fascinating. And the results?! Just incredible. If you want to use the pants think smaller, end tables, coffee tables, maybe some modernist designs with curves and skinny legs. BRASS WAS GENIUS whether intentional or not, the brass mimics the studs in making of genes, and your brass outlets were just cherries on the dessert❣ and the leather is also a nod the the jeans lifestyle. All thats left is to get leather tags embossed with your branding to put your claim to these art pieces. You are absolutely on to something. And you can add design elements with your colored epoxy like rhinestones. ❤❤❤
I am the same. I'm not sure how I got here, but I'm glad I did. That end result was incredible! Amazing choices all around! As for my favorite brand of jeans, I'm not sure I have one. I can't remember the last time I got consecutive pairs from the same brand.
I have watched many of your projects, but this has to be my favourite. You are to be admired for conceiving the project and carrying it through, notwithstanding the trials along the way. And it is truly unique- the brass fittings and leather legs are a perfect match. Perhaps the most wonderful feature was your decision to gift the finished product to the leather craftsman. Well done!
Thank you so much for the table, but more so the opportunity to work on a project with you. It was great working with such a talented artist! Also, we now call this the jable. Lol
Totally incredible, Spectacular. This table is priceless. Her value is surreal. I watched every second of this video and I have no words to describe this table.
Very cool looking project and especially the result. As for squeezing the liquid epoxy - in my country we have an old school device for squeezing laundry. It's two long tubes/drums with a handle. Take a look at a "hand Clothes Wringer" may be it'll give an idea.
Levi. Not only was this an amazing project, it was an incredible demonstration of selflessness, commitment, and compassion. I never expected to have tears watching a "How I made..." RU-vid Video. I am blown away by your craftsmanship, dedication to the project, and your generosity which was only exceeded by Sheeren's generosity. You Guys are the Best!
I love charity work myself, but would it have not been more generous for him to just use a slab of oak for the core, since it would never be seen again after a layer of denim went over it, and then he could have donated that $2000 dollars or so worth of epoxy and denim to like 100 other craftsmen to make cool projects with? Imagine how depleted our natural resources would be if everyone were as wasteful as this when it came to hobby crafts. Geesh wow, still smh in agony over this. What's next, making an engine that uses solid gold pistons to be put inside a Honda Civic?? Oh nvm, I'm afraid if he reads that suggestion he may actually try to do it🤦♂
@@Rick-the-Swift I was also wondering why he bought sooo much denim that essentially could’ve been literally any material since it would never be seen haha. Then again, it’s precisely because the entire table is literally denim that the project seems even more epic
COOLEST PIECE OF FURNITURE I'VE EVER SEEN!!! It's gorgeous! And imagine the conversations he'll have explaining that it's ACTUALLY 50 layers of material!! ❤
This is very similar to fiberglass work! I think you’d have a lot of success with vacuum bags for the clamp up. That would also be a simple way to start making non-flat forms/molds to layup curved shapes. You could also get some biaxial fiberglass and work that into the layers to get thinner parts that have structural strength. I’m excited to see what you do on this new path, there’s certainly a lot of opportunities!
Its basically the same kinda material, a fiberous weave held to gether with a resin, pretty similar to carbon fiber too. You could probably try and imitate the construction metods used in making composits, but I fear denim may be too thick to paint the resin on and have it properly soak through the fibers.
Well, i guess technically it is exactly the same as working with fiberglass. The body of the infamous Trabant car from the communistic regime German Democratic Republic was made like this table: cotton cloth soaked in resin laminated into shapes. it does not depend so much on the fiber you are using, the working technics are mostly the same. Technically you coud also cheat and laminate the denim over a lighter weight, but robust core to safe work, time and money on resin and denim and avoid emissions by wasting ressources. maybe it wouldn't feel right, but in the end noone would ever care, even, if you tell them.
Loved that picasso joke almost as much as i loved to see his genuine reaction and his immediate thought to his wife directly after that. Seems to me you gave away a table, but you earned a friend for life there. Power of kindness at its best. (Also, that end result was sooo neat can't wait to see what you do next with that micarta, that finish is stunning !)
What I absolutely love about your videos..... you don't hold back at showing failure/mistakes!! So many YT'ers put out these polished videos that make everything they do look as if it were perfect. You are willing to share the ups and DOWNS which makes it so much more real. Thank you!
@@BlacktailStudio keeping the mistakes is real, relatable and a fun part of doing a project is the innovation to work around limitations. If you haven’t had an issue on a project, you haven’t done enough projects. Very true for me working on my cars. Not having the right specialist tool or a bolt snapping or being seized etc. But I come out more experienced for it and don’t make the same mistakes again.
I agree, his video's are more real and raw when it comes to mistakes on some of the projects he builds. Its more relatable and more personal when you see him try to deal with the mistakes that pop up. also you get more of a genuine vibe from him all together because he doesnt hold back on some of the problems that may occur.
with the amount of epoxy that was leaking out of that thing, im not sure youd be able to get the pressure needed to hold it without sucking liquid epoxy into your vacuum
100%. Used to build fiber glass/carbon fiber boats. Vacuum infusion would be the way to go. It’s a bit of a finicky process, but probably worth the setup. Alternatively, lots of good tutorials on hand laminating sheets. This is essentially fiber glass layup work. We talked quite a bit about making tables out of regular fabric in the shop, considering we had all the gear to do it.
ya, I've been experimenting with that a bit since this project actually. Just cant have as much epoxy squeeze out as this piece or it'll get sucked into the vac.
We used to vacuum infuse carbon fiber sheet on a sliding glass door - Apply mold release to the door, lay down your fabric (worked up to 1”+ thick), peel ply, resin/vacuum lines, vacuum bag. Suck it down, introduce the resin, let it cure. No mess, and using glass ensured the surface finish was excellent.
fun fact- The material you made is called micarta. It was originally developed as a lightweight electrical insulator, however it is most often seen on knife handles. it is especially popular on camping and EDC knives due to it's waterproof properties and the fact that it'll develop a patina as it ages.
I made a couple subwoofer enclosures out of MDF and wrapped them in a black burlap micarta. Such a versatile process. Durable, looked good and fairly easy.
Oh jeez, I’m embarrassed; at the number of knife making videos I’ve watched over the years and never clued in watching this one that dude’s making micarta haha
You are an ARTIST. Period. There’s no right or wrong, there’s just an artist and his art. Your craftsmanship combined with your intuition and creativity is a gift so many people wish they had and just don’t. Bravo!
Best laugh I've had all day - the feet sticking 🤣 The table turned out beautifully, and it was so generous to give it away. He did an awesome job on the leather on the legs also.
Those leather wrapped legs with the dark blue denim and brass fittings is... Wow. I want to wear that table like an outfit. I think it's your most successful work in regard to combining different elements together into one cohesive whole.
This video earned my subscription. Not only did I love the fact that you owned up to any mistakes, the fact you gave the beautiful art to your fellow artisan, well, I have no words. Just beautiful, both in the workmanship and generosity.
This denim look is so stunning. I love that you show all of your mishaps as well. It's so refreshing to see someone real on RU-vid. I absolutely love your work.
I hope I'm not the only person who has noticed that one of the best things about your videos is your honesty. I know personally that there are so many points in watching people do projects that I want to ask what they were thinking when they implemented something, or overlooked errors. Keep up the incredible work!
Don't know if your a car guy, but another RU-vid channel I watch is Home Built by Jeff and he does the same, admits to his mistakes and it just makes a good watch.
This video is such an AWESOME VISUAL experience. I love the project progression and the painstaking attention to achieve an as near a perfect conclusion as possible. Everyone involved all seem to be creative perfectionists. I have now become a regular follower of your channel because of this one video. I thank the creative gods for artisans like you. BTW ... my favorite denim is old and well worn and faded with lots of frays and long tentacle like stringy threads ... ❤❤❤❤
I’m a Wrangler guy myself! That desk is gorgeous! 😍 I love the way the denim, leather and brass look together… it is casual, but high-class. What an amazing build! 👖💼🎺
Elegant, yet casual, yet unique, yet familiar. Gorgeous piece of art, leather stitched legs compliment the denim like a pair of jeans do cowboy boots. I can see this becoming a future line of furniture. One of my favorite builds, well done!
This was my first time seeing one of your videos. I believe that was one of the best looking desk designs I have ever seen. The generosity that you returned to the upholstery guy was amazing. Keep doing you it’s awesome.
Might be my favorite thing you’ve made. Don’t get me wrong, I think you put out some of the nicest, most elegant projects in the space, this one is killer. Great work.
I’m not a denim expert so I will just say I watched to the end 😂 Cam this was a sick build! I would have never thought you could do something like this! It’s super cool and loved how you did the legs! Really love it! Thanks for always making inspiring projects!
The fact that somebody was doing the work for you just because they love the craft says a lot about that man. Both you guys did great work and I know that that table will be used a lot and it looks beautiful. Faded denim is my favorite.
Nice Work : “I have a recommendation and an observation for you. If you apply the chemicals with a paint gun while positioning the table vertically on a rotatable attachment, you could avoid the dirt that falls when applying from top to bottom. By setting the table at a 90° angle, you would prevent contamination from falling onto the surface, making your work easier and cleaner.”
My favorite denim is whatever you just used. What an amazing piece, I'm glad it found such a deserving home. As an aside, I'd just like to say that Scott has really come in to his own with your channel. I love the bits of banter between you guys and he has clearly become a real asset to the channel beyond his video work. Can't wait to see more wacky projects from you guys!
Wrangler !l Whaou ! A voir !
Levi’s! This project was astounding! I’ve never felt ache in my heart from the beauty of furniture, until today. Every single video of your’s I see makes me think: ”how is he gonna top that, he can’t top that”. Then the next video goes online and low and behold, you topped the last one. Incredible content, one of my absolute favourite channels. Thank you!
Lee. I've never seen this before and I had no idea it would look that good. Hats off to you for putting in all that money and effort, and then giving it away to a honest guy who helped you out. You're truly an elite creator on this platform.
To say I am horrible at working with wood is an understatement. I have never see epoxy in real life. However, I am drawn to your movies from a creative point of view. Not only is it satisfactory to see someone create something but what people can learn from your experience is astounding. And what a great person to share all this. What an amazing channel.....
reading the first sentence I thought this was a reply from that guy he insulted in the video, what was his name, of right, picasso. Picasso does not have a youtube channel. so not you. my bad.
You don’t give yourself enough credit as an artist. This table is awesome and your creativity and humor are why this is my favorite channel on RU-vid. Keep ‘‘em coming!
Blacktail Studio is officially my new favorite brand of denim. Fantastic work, Cam, as always! At the end of every one of your videos I have to pause just to admire the finished product and dream of creating something so pristine and beautiful. If you ever see this comment, just know that I've become a true fan of your work and your channel, and you inspire me so much to try and become a great craftsman like you! Thank you for that. :)
I'm 8:35 into this and I am LOVING IT!!! That sound of your shoes in the epoxy the next morning - priceless! Thank you SO MUCH for being 101% transparent and honest about all of your successes, and, the many failures it took you to get to those successes.
I don't usually watch these kind of videos all the way through without skipping or fast forwarding, but this was an exception. I was so intrigued by all the different stages and I was kind of savouring seeing the finished results. Not disappointed! Such a unique and beautiful piece of craftsmanship. I know it wasn't perfect, but I don't think it needed to be. I honestly appreciate people who can make things from scratch with their hands and would love to have that skill myself. I'm glad the table went to someone who obviously appreciates the time and effort that went into making it!
Frankly speaking, I'm actually full of admiration for people like you who dare anything just to produce something innovative. What energy required... and what talent it takes !
