I’m Cam, the owner of Blacktail Studio. I started woodworking in 2016 as a hobby. Eventually I realized my hobby was expensive, so I tried selling some items to sustain it. Then I thought I might be able to help find customers if I made a video or two on the process. So in 2018 I launched my RU-vid channel.
This led to that, and in 2020 I quit my job to do this woodworking youtuber thing full time. Best decision I ever made though, I hope you enjoy following along!
My god congrats with the Woodcraft purchase! That's huge. As a big fan of symmetry, I liked the Dragon and Lightning tops the most, but there were a lot of cool ones! I really liked the bonus piece as well
So what you're telling us is you got yourself a hot-ass sugar momma. Nice. Also, "ugly bald guy"? Seriously? That dude has some serious projection issues. I'm sure you just _soaked_ your pillow over what what's-his-name said. pfffff. Initially I'm leaning towards Dragon or Lightning. TBC. Edit 1: The vacuum bag. Reverse the port from suction to blow. DO NOT GO HAM. You don't want to burst a seam. Just using a general air compressor duster gun into the port with short measured bursts is the way to go. Edit 2: Scott is always right. Edit 3: Wood turning basics are super easy to get into, and you'll have no problems burning through the beginner stuff.
Well, my friend, Cam, You didn’t tell us how to start our comments. I finished the whole blooming video - I always do! Today I caught this episode 12 hours after you posted it. So I’m hoping my comment counts. 😊 I really prefer the Islands table top better than the Palm. I love the color you used in the Burgundy and the Patriot. But the colors and contrast of the Islands and Palm table tops are what I believe makes them stand out above the rest! Pink happens to be my favorite color! But the muted tones in the Burgundy top are why it dropped from my favorite to third place. Between the Palm and Islands I prefer the Islands because the soft round shapes in the design appeal to me as do the softer but definite colors you used. The Palm is a top I KNOW my dear sweet husband Bob would absolutely love! He was the program manager of the ocean division for the state of Oregon land use department, the Department of Land Conservation and Development. The agency is dedicated to fulfilling the 19 land use goals (one of which was the ocean goal) of Senate Bill 100 that keeps our wonderful state the best place to live in the world! Definitely in the US! Bob retired in 2011 after 30 years of work for the state. Our son very perceptively pointed out four months later the Bob had flunked retirement! A couple of years or so after that Bob went on to found the official version of the Elakha Alliance, a non-profit 501 (c)3 dedicated to the return of sea otters to their rightful place in the Oregon ocean. There is a long and sad story about the sea otters being hunted to extinction in Oregon and nearly everywhere else. (If you are interested in learning more about the otters and the Elakha Alliance, Elakhaalliance.org will tell you more than you could ever know or remember about the slaughter and attempts to restore sea otters to Oregon). The Elakha Alliance along with several coastal Tribes, scientists, and students of all ages😮 are working closely with each other to restore these important animals. The😅😅 point I’m trying to make, though, is that the Palm table top reminds me of a beautiful sea star, an animal absolutely necessary to the ecosystem of the near-shore and tide pools of the ocean. If we squint really hard, we can also see the form of a sea urchin which are sea otters’ favorite food! So, sea star or sea urchin, both images are marvelous! I don’t recall if you are intending to auction off the extra tables. I would LOVE an opportunity to bid on either or both the Islands or Palm (Sea Star) tables. Whether I am successful in biding on either table, I think your work on all the table tops is tremendous and tremendously entertaining. Thank you so much for your RU-vid channel. It has given me wonderful amusement during my sleepless nights, as well as many afternoons! Keep making your videos and *I* will watch them! Gosh, they are all beautiful 😍 If I had to choose ... I really like your sample piece, thin foil + denim. When it comes to the stands I think I would prefer the thin one as it keeps the focus on the top plate.
The "failed" pattern where you did not take the extra depth into account has potential for a new idea. A hybrid wood/denim table could be a possibilty with larger (and higher quality/colour/pattern) wood segments connected by the denim inside the epoxy could look epic, or be a fun but absolute failure. Im guessing it may need a thin wood base or core to hold it all together though.
The Pepperoni pattern is my favorite, but I love the colors on the Giraffe and Patriot. Wonder what some of these would look like if you mixed in patterned fabric and/or wood veneers between the denim.
I like the white oak best too. I think if you are exposed to premium woodworking constantly it seems boring, but as someone who lives in a home decked with flat pack furniture something like that really appeals to me
Creo que la mesa pequeña sería más firme si a la base le insertas una varilla roscada un poco más gruesa y poniendo una tuerca encajada en el crento de la tabla
The Islands and Burgundy tops were the ones that really stood out for me. So so different and absolutely a talking piece. Mind you, id have any of them. Amazing work as always...
with this sun technique. maybe you can make something else: Use a similar form you made for the damascus-jean table, but instead of jeans, put epoxi in the sun. you may have a beautifull wave effect you can use for something. As for this peace, arn't you worried it will deform again in from of a sunny window?
Wow, some people are just so miserable! You're not a ugly guy at all, sounds like that person was projecting. And the fact you managed to flip that comment into something you saw as positive and can laugh at shows why your wife picked you, a positive attitude/good outlook on life remains long after looks fade. Not only are you creative and can build your wife whatever she wants, youre an absolute gem personality wise too. Beautiful tables, and as always, great commentary!
The giraffe pattern and “rain drop pepperoni” 🍕 one are the best. Also, you should call the pattern you make for underneath the table Fugu pattern. The Japanese Fugu (puffer fish) makes an amazing pattern in the sand to attract it’s mate, looks so much like your pattern.
