Charging networks in the wild leave a lot to be desired. Yet, there is no one to blame. Free market forces have not found their way to EV Fast Chargers yet. The largest, Electrify America, is a subsidiary of Volkswagen. Which only built out the stations they did because they were convicted of fraud and part of their punishment was to take $2 billion dollars and dump it into building a charging network. Typically that is not the way to get great results.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
Yup.
@Team_Trade_Down
@Team_Trade_Down Год назад
FYI. Most people think "Electrify America", because of the name, has something to do with a government agency, or is an American company trying to be great stewards of the EV transition. It isn't. Electrify America is a subsidiary of Volkswagen. VW was found quilty of fraud during dieselgate and the courts ordered Volkswagen to spend $2 billion dollars on building EV chargers across America. Their motivation is not to have the best, most reliable charging stations in the world. Yes they use outside vendors to build the chargers to their specs, but VW is responsible for picking who builds the chargers, and to what tolerances. Sigh.
@loriallen67
@loriallen67 Год назад
So Ford’s ultimatum to dealers over selling EVs is a brilliant way to build out a Ford DC charging network. As a Mach E owner, the dealer network was part of the decision process. We wanted some form of dealer support if there were problems. But Knowing that we could charge at any small town ford dealership is huge. Game changer for travel. Just did a day trip and if we could have charged (if needed) in one of the rural communities we passed, that would have made the trip even better.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
I'm with you, hoping for a future with reliable CCS fast charging. If franchise dealerships are part of that equation, I'll take it. At the moment the franchise dealerships seem to add questionnaire benefit and enormous mark-ups to legacy automaker EVs.
@loriallen67
@loriallen67 Год назад
@@MissGoElectric the dealership model needs work for sure. And Ford’s plan is brilliant for Ford and customers but I question the benefit to the dealers to have fast charging available for cars which have little maintenance. So I’m waiting to see what type of uptake Ford has with this plan. Fast Chargers at rural dealers would be best for customers yet those dealerships are the least likely to buy in to Ford’s plan, I would think. The only caveat is the F150 Lightning: the rural dealers make their $$ on pickups. So it could go either way.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
@@loriallen67 Each legacy automaker is wrestling with the same challenge. How can they compete with lean new competitors while funding hundreds of very expensive car lots and their wealthy franchise owners? Winning with a leak in the ship like powerful middlemen is tough. Incoming government DC quick charging infrastructure could be the fix automakers need to compete with Tesla's excellent fast charging network.
@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 Год назад
I don't believe it's fair for ford to dump the charging infrastructure problem on the dealers. The one and only dealer in my area that sells at MSRP says there's no way that will be paying ford $1.2 million to provide chargers. I believe that ford needs to partner with ithe EV manufacturers to expand their charging network. I don't believe the dealers are going to get involved in this and I certainly don't blame them. Ford has made it clear they'd like to just bypass dealers and sell their EV's online.
@pstoneking3418
@pstoneking3418 Год назад
@@loriallen67 I don't believe my local dealers are going to get involved in this new plan Ford has to build their charging infrastructure, and I can't blame them. Ford wants them to pay $1.2 million each for this. It's extortion as far as I'm concerned and besides that local people aren't going to pay $.43/kwh when they can charge at home for $.12/kwh.

I don't know for sure, but it seems like the Electrify America network is a poorly run operation. Here in Kentucky, an east end Louisville EA station has been sitting for months, but never activated. Compared to the Tesla Supercharger network I would never rely on the CCS charging network for any kind of long distance driving. And the plight of Chademo is even worse. My Nissan Leaf has never ventured more than 40 miles from home base. Electricity is everywhere, but everyone except Tesla are dragging their feet.

We've had hundreds of experiences with EA. A small percentage have been positive.

Electrify America is the product of the settlement from Volkswagen’s diesel gate so there isn’t the same incentive for quality that the other charging networks have. Tesla’s superiority is because of their vertical integration of software and hardware married to their vehicles with their charging stations and network. In that way Tesla is like Apple.

Agreed. I have the Ford now, and I have owned Tesla’s in the past. I don’t understand why other manufacturers or charging companies can’t get their act together. I think what you see, is the advantage of going with a pure electric auto maker versus an OEM. Rivian is installing chargers in places they think their customers will want them. And Tesla knew they needed to put the infrastructure in in order to make it work.

You are quite the EV ambassador. Thank you for your service. I was shocked when you filled up from 18% - 86% (I think) and you were charged for 95kWhs when your battery capacity is the same. That would be like pumping gas while holes in the station's equipment causing gas to leak all over the place and you have to pay for it. When I saw $40 to fill an EV my mouth dropped. This is the first time in 2 years that I am thinking this transition to EVs may not be so easy. I did pay as high as $.33/kWh on a trip, but I only pay $.05/kWh at home. I'm going to have to figure out if I am losing kWhs while supercharging. That does not seem fair to consumers. The level of detail you got between the app and the station was impressive. Great job.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
Thank you for your compliment. To be clear, the battery capacity of the truck we tested is over 130kWh. We have seen rates for CCS DC fast chargers as high as $1/kWh. Network operators gauging at the station level, utilities gauging at the meter, installation companies gauging at the onset, or governments adding taxes are examples of forces which could invert the value proposition of road tripping with an EV compared to ICE. We have read through the plans for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) spending is where we are based in Michigan. The plan projects spending of $80,000 PER STATION. Tesla can deploy at least five stations for the same cost and Tesla's V3 stations are faster and more reliable than the CCS solutions proposed. Public sector charging station projects tend to be very costly in part due to the friction of regional intermediaries, bureaucratic waste, and limited bidding contractor competition, and a lack of cohesive national scale. Too often, the parties involved with CCS DC fast charging projects face the media for progress headlines and ribbon cutting photographs, then vanish. Unacceptable per kWh costs be one side effect of excessive spending and disjointed accountability. Free and easy money which is deployed rapidly is a recipe for malinvestment. We don't know what the solution is, but it sure is an advantage for Tesla buyers for the time being.
@FelixTheCat69
@FelixTheCat69 Год назад
@@MissGoElectric Thank you for the clarification. What will end up happening if Tesla doesn't match the local rates (not sayin' they should) is all EVs will just use Supercharging locations and the degradation on the gov sponsored ones will be accelerated. You would think if the gov is funding the build out they could do their price caps to incentivize adoption, then gouge later LOL.

What a great review. I learned some things for sure (and I've been researching this truck for a long time). My Lightning is scheduled to come in by March. I'm really on the fence since they forced my to order a Lariat (or have nothing). With rebates, the original base model was going to be around $28,000. With price increases (and loss of the rebate in 2023 for me) the truck is now about $77,000. That seems to be a lot for a truck that I can drive about 2 hours between charges. I'm still probably going to take delivery and check it out.
@MissGoElectric

The new IRA program subsidizes a whole lot of vehicles which burn gas and excludes many of the very best EVs. The best part about factory installed GPS systems is that all of the maps and information are stored in the car’s memory and is not as up to date. If you take a trip away from cellular service, which is easy to do in the mountains or the desserts of the western USA, the onboard system will function normally, except for things like traffic and weather data. Google and Apple rely on a cellular connection and they will be almost useless away from service. My Tesla ends up showing a blurry map with no way to navigate to places. We were just in Yellowstone with almost no service from T-Mobile. Our CarPlay screen went blank as soon as we ran out of map data. A “cheap” portable GPS would’ve worked perfectly instead of trying to use our phones. Califonia has many big areas with no service, like crossing the Sierra Nevada.

19:15 In general I agree with you not needing a 350 Kw charger for the Lightning. However, it is important to note that many have reported a 5-10min "surge" of 170Kw 'ish power when you first plug in. It should only decrease your time by a few minutes, but with if its not a busy time and you'll be there only for a quick stop it may be of benefit to get just a bit more. I would definitely use common sense with that and NOT plug into a 350Kw for a long charge if there is a chance someone who really needs it would show up
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
Since most new Lightning owners have never owned an EV we felt it was important to include some etiquette. We understand for a very short period of time you might be able to hit higher rates but since you can't see the rate in the app/on the instrument cluster to know when that peak drops (if away from the station to read it) coupled with the fact the time savings being minimal, it is better to lean towards friendly EV charging practices to benefit all EV users with different capabilities. Most of the general public isn't as nerdy as us early EV adopters :)

I love the idea of an all electric truck. The problem is there are a way to many people who don't live close enough to a charging station for an electric truck to do them any good. Even if they do live close to a charging station, the time to charge is still way to slow. This will get better as the tech better and the infrastructure gets larger. In the mean time, I believe a suitable stopgap measure is for electric vehicles to be equipped with range extending generators similar to in idea to the chevy volt from 2014, but with more efficient less polluting generators. If we were really smart, the range extending generator could be hydrogen fuel cell powered.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
Thank you for joining us. EV drivers do not use charging stations close to their home because that electricity is expensive and inconvenient. DC Fast chargers near a driver's home should not be a factor when deciding if an EV is a good choice. Well over 90% of EV charging is done at the driver's home on a private charger. Federal and state governments as well as utility companies subsidize home charging station installation mostly or even entirely in some cases. Charging an F150 Lightning at home can be completed overnight for most drivers. It is convenient and very inexpensive. When taking long trips far from home, the fast charging network is very important. As we've shown, it can be an annoying process today. By this time next year the situation will be much better because the government is subsidizing and heavily regulating hundreds of thousands of new fast chargers which will be found at least every 50 miles along all major highway corridors in every state.

That is a shame to hear your Electrify America charging experience was less than ideal with the Mustang Mach E. We love that vehicle. Volkswagen was forced to create EA because of their diesel-gate scandal. We understand the challenges they are facing as a result of expanding the network too quickly and relying on vendors to provide hardware. Now that Siemens is an investor and EA is starting to replace many first generation units. Some sites are incorporating energy storage onsite. We hope EA reliability improves. I would hate to see federal infrastructure money doled out to networks which have proven they will not maintain their stations or offer reliability for their users at or near the level of Tesla's network. Gas cars are much more likely to catch fire. Batteries slowly lose capacity but rarely stop working like engines do. Main drawback.. a storm caused our electricity to go out last night for 8 hours! Rather common in rural areas. The EV’s are excessively heavy and let’s see how they hold up after 100,000 miles.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Месяц назад
We live in a rural area and our power goes out frequently. The huge battery in our electric truck powers our house when that happens and it can do so for more than a week. Electric trucks like the F150 and the Cybertruck weigh about 20% more than their gasoline competitors but deliver much more torque, acceleration, and lower cabin noise levels. Remember, there are already 30 million EVs on the road worldwide with volume production starting 14 years ago. All EV batteries are warrantied for at least 100,000 miles. Tesla Cybertruck for example is covered for 150k. The batteries are made to outlast the vehicles they are in. www.thecooldown.com/green-business/tesla-model-s-battery-australia-nigel/ -Producer Tim

My big issue with the EV’s is battery life? And damage that could be done in the extreme cold that can come in winter or extreme heat. The cost to replace said battery.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
Batteries are warrantied for at least 8 years 100k miles. Batteries are highly valuable even if there has been range loss due. All valuable minerals in a new pack remain in an old pack. Companies like Redwood Materials pay for those minerals. Additionally, new battery cost has dropped around 10% annually for a decade or more. A $40k battery in 2013 might cost 15k now. We are building a closed loop of domestic battery supply in the USA. Reducing our energy dependence on foreign supply could improve our national security and economic outlook greatly in the long run. Some project that by 2050 we will no longer require minerals from mines for automobiles because decommissioned batteries will contain everything required for new vehicles.

In Yosemite National Park, I’ve seen Tesla Level II destination chargers replaced by Rivian Level II chargers with a big sign thanking Rivian for installing them. I find this to be extremely wrong, someone got paid off by Rivian. Those Tesla chargers were provided at no cost, I wonder what happened to those Tesla chargers? We can’t believe everything that we are told by Rivian. We need chargers where there were none before. It’s incredibly expensive to install DC fast chargers, but that’s what is needed. I’ve seen battery storage used to enable DC changing, but then there is a long waiting period between charges.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
Battery enabled DC fast is usually a cache and is replenished by the grid or another source. Often that is done when output can exceed the grid connection. We've never experienced a wait or heard about battery banks depleting and charging being stopped. We don't know who was paying for the electricity when the Tesla stations were at Yosemite. This new arrangement certainly puts Rivian and/or drivers on the hook to pay for the power. We aren't defending it, but accountability and ongoing expenses are an invisible piece of the puzzle. We agree with you that new stations in new locations which serve a wide variety of drivers are what we need.

When priced at MSRP, Ford sells these as fast as they can build them. The independent dealerships can charge whatever they want. Some dealerships set prices higher the market can bear. Jesus Christ they even on an EV just CANT get rid of the god forsaken whip antenna. People barely ever even use radio anymore, just make it an aerodynamic sharkfin style one already Ford, for Christ's sake!!! Also this truck should be 150kWh base and 200kWh for the long range version. Idk if the Lightning uses a heat pump, but it should definitely use one and I also am not sure if they use EV specific tires but it should be riding on those as well. Getting 70mpge is absolute shit when the Hummer EV can do up to 51mpge while also being literally worse than a rolling brick on tractor tires.
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
We specifically call out the fact that the F150 Lightning does *not use* a heat pump. Resistive heating is inefficient and we are now seeing owners complain about significant winter range trouble. That said, in warm and hot conditions the F150 was performing at or above the efficiency ratings stated on the monroney. Ford has another EV truck in development which is geared towards efficiency. The F150 is available now and they can surely make improvements over time to this platform.

Do you know why you have to get the 20” wheels with the larger battery? Is it a bigger brake caliper? Or is it just Ford forcing crap on you in bundles?
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Год назад
Range is greatly affected by wheel size. 20" is optimally efficient for the F150 Lightning. Other choices reduce range, which is important to buyers who pay the premium for a larger battery. Ford recently dropped the price of the F150 by almost $10k for some trim levels. A reduction in the number of possible configurations is crucial to reducing retooling time which improves annual volume thereby achieving production scale and inching towards EV profitability. We produced a tour of the factory where these are built in case you'd like to learn more. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o5tqlXc2qdo.html Thanks for watching. -Producer Tim
