These are my old boots! I'm so glad they got one last use out of them before the graveyard. I've been rooting for Steven Segal ever since I saw the option and to see it finally land there on my own personal boots made me laugh out loud. I will say this, despite the Bull Run's flaws I found them insanely comfortable during the hottest summer months. They felt more like leather Converse than actual boots. I wish they held up better, but at least they were comfortable while they lasted.
@@ianturnbow7011 my current favorite pair are a pair of Red Wing 8146 Roughneck. I've tried the Thorogood 6", the Danner, I tried the White's Perry twice and had two separate failures on two separate pairs of boots in under a week of wear each. For all Rose Anvil talks up the Perry it has massive QC issues if you do some digging online. The Roughnecks get worked just as hard as any of my other boots, and are taking it like a boot should. Yes they are one of the most expensive options, but they punch well above their weight class in comfort and durability, and have a full leather interior. They truly feel like the boot I've been looking for this entire time.
@@ianturnbow7011 I liked the roughneck so much I wound up buying the 2927 Sawmill because it's basically the exact same boot with an extra cold weather lining and felt insole for winter.
With the Danner Bull Run, because they are a stitch down construction, your Cobbler can easily scrape out the lasting board, and slide in a leather one during a resole.
@@myhomiealex6 The one big problem with the Bull run wedge boots, is it also uses a plastic heel counter that has a piser going up the back of your achilles tendon. This raised section over time will crack and break off, resulting in a sliced open hole on the back of the heel counter. This is basically the end of your boot. If they used a leather insole, and leather heel counter, they would cost an extra $30, but would be well worth the increase in price.
I have these in steel toe. They are very comfortable for working on concrete or steel bed plates. Going on 2 years. It’s light work but I do clean them and condition them regularly.
Do you think it'd be possible to do a part 2 on this series where you clean up the moc toes? I think it'd be quite cool and insightful to see how they clean up after 1000 miles.
@@RoseAnvil ASMR Boot cleaning videos are my favorite! I've watched your iron ranger one over ten times now. I deep clean my work boots every month and it's so therapeutic for me and seeing how other people do it is interesting. It would be cool to see how each of the leather types cleans up, maybe it might help us understand leather quality better.
My bull runs have over a year of 10 hr days on them. Same issues, the counter is broken and gone, and shank poking through. Though the foot bed isn't broke yet. They a still damn comfortable and should be able to get a resole out of them
I bet the Carhartt's didn't last long enough as a boot for people to get attached to them, and that's why you're having trouble finding worn Carhartt boots.
@@dustinread6407 I don't remember what Carl said about the boots, but I think his love of Carhartt is based on their classic jackets/pants/etc., which I think are still good. The boots, on the other hand, seem to just be a cash grab.
I worked in the Carhartt boots until they fell off. I definitely do not recommend. . One day my boot filled up with water and I bought Irish setters mid shift.. I've been wearing those same boots since then. That was 4 years ago
I posted the comment below on your original review. I just want to add that I was taught to care for my boots both growing up and it was certainly reinforced during my military career. With a a little more TLC these boots would have likely been good for many years. I don't intend this as an insult of anyone and how they care for boots. I certainly understand the amount of effort that goes into cleaning and caring for boots. It is time consuming and it's up to each person to decide how to best use their time. I've been wearing the Bull Runs for over a year. I've worn all sorts of work boots for the last 60 years including issue military boots during my time in the Army. I also currently have a pair of Iron Rangers and Jim Green Rangers, but the boot I wear 5 days out of 7 are the Bull Runs. Since I've only had them a year I can't speak to their longevity, but the comfort is beyond compare to any other work boot I have owned.
I’ve gotten a new pair of these in steel toe every year. Love them. I will say the cork bottoms get a really dirty look after a year and the white stitching turn a nasty looking color. Out of 4 pairs I’ve gotten I’ve only had one pair have issues with the sole starting to come off just a little! I wear these boots 5 days a week.
How was the break in? He said his was mild... But 2 days of wearing these (not much, maybe 10hrs) the soles of my feet are killing me and they feel very stiff.
@@snarp408 the break isn’t great but within a week. I’d recommend you wear them a few hrs a day and then thrown on an old pair. Do that until your new pair is broke in. If not you will get raw spots on your feet and you will hate the boot.
@@zacd7094 thanks for the tip! Last boots I purchased (Irish Setters) were too small, and although I wore em for 3 years... Have never felt great. It's possible I went too big this time, but luckily REI will do exchanges no questions asked. Only worn 2 days now. Fingers crossed they break in!
I've been wearing my Bull Run Moc Toes every day for the past 2 years. In about 8 months of use, I discovered that on the bottom of both boots, the outsole was split following the end of the shank. This didn't concern me much as I bought mine from the factory second store and the boots were already a year old when I bought them. I figured the split was due to age. That's probably still true, but now I know that I'm not the only one to experience this. That being said, they're still my absolute favorite pair of boots and are the most comfortable thing I have ever put on my feet. When it comes time to resole them, I'm definitely going to do it. I also have a pair of the Danner Bull Run Chelsea since I like the Moc Toes so much. We'll see how those wear out. Thank you for doing this video, man! It's definitely insightful!
Ive had the same pair for over 9 months going on about 3-4 miles a day on them, and must say that I’m seeing the same flaws listed above. Now I must also say that they are still comfortable for about three quarters of my day, anything after that and u must get them off my feet.
Danner can rebuild any boot for a reasonable cost; if you're local you can just drop them off, but even people that live here just send them in for resoling or panel fixes (heel counter would probably be every third resole for me). I have the regular Vibram lug sole and fabric panels because my use model is hiking/exploration/off road sports but the construction isn't much different. Red Wings are similar, though, if you have a good RW shop in town - it's pretty much 75 bucks to get a resole on whatever boot I've went out to repair here in town. Even locals mail off boots to Danner to get them repaired :-) since the boots are completely assembled/built in USA it makes sense they can refresh any component of it quickly and at a minimal cost.
Seeing how the fabric liner and the fiberboard insole held up compared to both parts made from thick leather like in the Red Wings is very telling. Huge difference, and replacing the lining and insole on these would be too expensive. Stitching the toe box back together is much less of an issue, that can just be accessed from the outside and is a pretty simple job. Although I doubt most non-abused boots would ever face that issue in the first place. As far as the shank is concerned, I had a similar issue with shanks on sneakers. A shank just doesn't work with a thin and soft sole.
100% USA sourced material, USA tanned and USA built. Red Wing 10877!!! Toughest boot I’ve ever had on my foot…….. Haven’t saved enough for my Nicks boots yet though
Bought a pair of Redbacks after your video and have not looked back. Best boot for overall comfort and reliability. A little costly but the durability is higher than the price.
About the 2 piece v. 1 piece for the toe portion of a moc toe boot, I find that 2 piece, over time, takes on that shape that, to me, seems so classic on a moc toe (think of the RW 877s or 75s). Not so much w the 1 piece. The 1 piece has the shape of a regular boot. I'd rather have that distinctive shape. It's subtle, but I like it.
I love these boots. Working in the Vegas heat the thinner leather, and no leather lining keeps them a bit cooler but they still hold up really good. I don't think if they are worn like that it's worth a resole but I think you can def get one out of it. They are one of the more comfortable boot options that I've worn.
I have the 5inch brown version of these and I love them, but I noticed after a long summer running cattle and putting up wire that they became super slick on the bottom. I did wear them for 7-10 hrs a day. I just didn’t expect them to be pretty much flat after a few months. I kept really good care of the leather, but the soles took a bit of a beating
I’d like to see the redwing 2927 saw mill mock toe with vibrant lug cut in half to see the quality, I bought a pair a year ago but only have about 2 weeks wearing them
These boots are considerably less bully and lighter than its competitors. Redwings and Thorogood look massive next to these and when I’m working in tight spaces a smaller boot is nice.
I had a pair of danners minus the moc toe feature, They came with vibram christy sole..held up for two resoles, turned my socks red from the leather. Decent boots..
i am a groundskeeper by trade. me and my 3 coworkers take care of 375 acers. a pair of bullruns last me about 2 months. theyre so comfortable and they are a classic but im about to switch things up. specially as the rainy season nears. if you REALLY work... you gotta step it up from these forsure.
Loved this series. Next year take the mail-in's, clean them up, resole them, then donate them to your local charity or day labor center. Also, try to include a little more wear history about the boot. I love to hear stories of the nasty conditions these boots get subjected to.
I can comment on this as this is my old pair of boots I sent in. I work general new residential construction, so they've seen a lot of shovel and ladder time, roofing, concrete, you name it. A little bit of everything
Any shoe that gives 1000 miles, that's dope ass! The price range for others nothing more than paying for the brand name! 1000mile? I won't even be thinking of a resole!
This was great! Owning a pair myself (for about 18 months) this put everything into perspective. I’ve taken better care than this owner so I hope they last at least as long as my redwing mocs.
I just received my Danner Bull Run moc toe boots. They feel great on my feet. One reason I chose them is they have speed hooks on the top row. Some other brands don't do that.
I would love to see a pair of redwing irsh setters cut in half. I have a pair that I have worn for over a year and walked in on concrete 8 miles a day for a year and still no re-soles and nothing coming apart on the in side at all.
You hit spot on with the counter cover. My heels are wearing through and I have pain. Boots are 6 months old. Holding up ok but that fabric liner is awful. I wish I could go back in time. I bought some heel inserts. I have a pair of Danners from 1997 that I still wear. These arent those for sure. Id do the whites again if I could. Going to buy a pair of Jim Green Stockman boots to rotate in. Your vids are the absolute best
Awesome video - really good insights through out the series!! Seeing all these goodyear welts and stitch-out shoes, how do you think would european hiking boots like Lowa, Hanwag or Meindl perform. As far as i know most of them are cement construction or 'molded'
I love these boots ans doing good after a year to 2 but heed a resole and going with a vibram standard lug because they are too slippery in the winter. Mine are nowhere near as crusty as those ones. So i think it will be ok. But i dont feel like these are even work boots at all. They are more of a stylish motorcycle riding, hang out, boot and for that i love them. So comfortable. We will see how it goes with a resole. Im a little worried im gonna lose the comfort with a stiffer outdoor rubber and a traditional half inch heal.
I bought a pair of these about 11 months ago and here's my complaint: after wearing them for at least 40 hours per week since then, they've really just broken in! They were super uncomfortable, especially the cuff, which was very stiff and rubbed my ankle raw, and the tongue, which is too thin and allows the laces to press against my instep right through the thin leather. I just stopped into the Red Wings store today and told them about my issues with the Danner Bull Runs and they showed me the Irish Setter "Wingshooter", which is similar in design to the Danners but corrects the issues of the thin tongue and stiff cuff. I think those will be my next work boots.
@@kenpriest5672 I wound up getting a pair of Wingshooters. They are a little narrow but that's my only complaint so far. Hopefully they'll stretch out with time.
Thanks man I liked those boots just looking from the outside but damn they don't look worth the money now that I can see that cross section. Great video man and all the best from Northern California 👍
can you please cut open steel blue southern cross zip because I know you done the cowboy boots but you really need to try the southern cross zip I promise you will LOVE them I guarantee :)
I like working in a moc toe and I trying to find a boot to replace my Irish setters. I was trying to decide between these and thorogoods but the bull runs went on sale to 150 so I picked up a pair. They lasted 5 weeks before the stitching on the side came out. Customer service was good and sent me a new pair within a week but I quit wearing them for work and they are now a casual boot. I'd say buy something else if you actually want a work boot.
Recently discovered your channel, really like your content :) can you do a video on Hunter Boots? I see a lot of people give them mixed reviews and would love to see what you think of them.
I had a pair of danner bull runs in steel toe that I used for about a year and a half before they got pretty uncomfortable and Wore out. My main issues were the counter and the liner like you mentioned. After a while they just felt floppy. I ended up switching to nicks and have never looked back since
I will always buy the Bull Runs because I had the Red Wings and they were the best built pair of boots that were so impossible to wear due to pain. Id rather a less lasting boot thats comfy.
I had these boots but in the classic two piece moc toe for a few years. The counter wore through and completely broke in to multiple pieces. That became very uncomfortable and the stitch down toe started to come apart.
@Marc Carran I didn’t ask you personally to make a video did I? What’s the point of your comment to me? We don’t know each other. Did something that i said just really rub you the wrong way that you felt compelled to reply to my comment?
@Marc Carran I’m sorry, this must not be the channel that buys expensive boots and cuts them in half. This must not be the channel that spent $2,400 on every size of red wing moc toe boots. I’m sure this channel didn’t build a special guillotine specifically for cutting boots in half. Like I said, mind your own business. My comment wasn’t political and it wasn’t bullying anyone. I was asking them to make a review on a boot that I really like. There was no reason for your comment.
@Marc Carran There you go embarrassing yourself again. I would like to know what made you feel compelled to reply to my comment? You don’t have any relation to me and I’m guessing you don’t have any relation to Rose Anvil or any stock in this page so What about my comment struck a chord in you that you needed to tell me off?
I don't own these, but I have been looking at them in stores (June 2023), and there is now another layer of material over the fabric counter cover. It almost feels like a fake suede (texture), but I'm not sure what it is, haha. And I think the mesh in the rest of the boot might be gone, too.
I wonder if you've considered reviewing the Double H DM5334 Stadium Boot. They make them once a year and any retailer would tell you they have to order an entire year's worth of stock at one time. I've worn them for years and they have a small cult following among us older gentlemen. I'd love to know what's inside.
the uppers are different on the whites and JKs compared to the danners. they top of the ankle is forward of the heel on the danners and red wings. the whites and JKs are built like you spend more time pointing your toe than bending down on your ankle. I got a pair of whites and they leave like a 3" gap between my Achilles and the back of the boot. I dont get it, why do they add that extra curve? the danners fit perfect
Might be a weird question..but does anyone else (owners of the Bull Runs) have an issue with the tongue sliding or not being centered in the boot? My left boot also seems to have the tongue sliding out of place so my laces are right up against my ankle.
CARHART.... I've got a pair that my clutch pedal on my semi wore almost through the outsole in 3 months. Let me know if you would like me to send them to you.
Man I have three pairs of danners but I don’t use them for construction work. I just like the way they feel and look as a style. But looking at those boots. They got the s h i t kicked out of them. Thanks for the video
Can we get a video on the danner mountain light? It’s experiencing a resurgence in poularity at the moment. Just bought a pair, I’m curious if it’s a good boot for the price. Thank you.
Would you be interested in cutting apart a pair of chipawa loggers, I’ve got a pair that I don’t use anymore and I think a lot of people would be surprised at how bad of a boot they are for $340 …… that’s why I wear whites and Drew’s boots now. And my Wesco boots are an absolute joke for work boots and can’t wait to send them back to be fixed so I can sell them or give them to someone who will appreciate them.
I think these boots would be fine for around $190, but not $230. You can get a higher quality material boot for that range. But keep in mind, we have insoles for a reason. A half decent insole should keep you from feeling cracks in a lasting board. And a lining is going to tear in most every boot from the scrubbing of your foot. A vamp does do something to keep moisture off your foot a little, and allows sweat/etc to be absorbed into it. But yeah, for $230 bucks I’d go with something else.
I am new to danner boots. I have recently just got my first pair about 6 months ago. I am interested in seeing what rose anvil has to say about them and see if they are as high quality as i think they are
Flund a bunch of old military/work boots 25-45 years of age never found textile heel area on the inside... always a double leather layer... why is it worse/better besides the blister danger in canvas wearouts?
I got these for more of a dress/casual/light work boot. I just love the look over redwing and the the others except maybe nicks but I don't have $500 for shit kickers right now though they'd probably last 20 years of use like that. Love the bull run profile but kinda ridin wishing I'd went for the whites now.
Irrelevant to the video but could you do some real world testing of different boot brand in different categories? For example slip resistance, fire resistance, water resistance, ETC?
I love these boots. By far the best I've tried. I have plantar fasciitis and gout. In addition, I have fused bones in my feet which limits my motion and causes pain. Over the past five years, I have ordered close to 10 thousand dollars in boots.(Justins, various models of Timberland regular and pro, Rocky, Georgia, Ariat, Irish Setter, Nike, Various Military desert boots, plus more I can't recall) Many I returned and many were attempted to break in only to donate after disappointment. These are the only boots I could find that came close to letting me wear a boot instead of tennis shoes. My search continues to find this phantom boot that is perfect. Everyone's foot and pains alter so taking advice is difficult as well. However, if there is someone out there with similar disabilities that has found a more comfortable boot than this that is not a geriatric boot for seniors who don't need boots anyway, please enlighten me, seriously!
I bought a pair of steel toe bull runs in September and not even three months into it the toe is coming apart and soles just dont hold up for a heavy equipment technician. Just went back to Red Wings but my first pair of #2233. Would love to see a review on these because I havent seen any yet.
I have Carhartts but only have a month of wear on them. (I bought brand new from a freind for cheap and before I saw your video on them) I doubt I will still be wearing them after 1,000 miles, that works out to about 8 months for me and I just can't imagine them lasting that long. Want me send them in next year once I wear them out?
