That's some nice glass, and a good rig. It looks like you put a lot of thought into every detail, including how you run it. Nicely done, Sir.

Forgot. Barrel life is about 1200 to 1500 rounds. Have had 5 barrels in it over the years. Powder is AR 2213sc which is the same powder that you know in the US called H4831sc

The bolt is completely removed to speed up operation on this particular action style. It is an old custom action and the port on the RH side is not large enough to eject the 300 Win Mag case through therefore I choose to completely remove the bolt. As you can see the system works fast enough.

What's with all these people thinking it takes no skill. This guy is making constant holdover changes. He even says so in the video. The rifle is mounted, yes, that's the "Benchrest" part, but it can still move a little... That little is the difference between hitting the target AT ALL or COMPLETELY missing... Some people man, I swear.
@StuartElliott54
@StuartElliott54 11 лет назад
Read previous comments. That is an old Custom single shot action and the port is too short for 300 Win Mag cases. So I simply removed the bolt stop and developed a new technique. Works fast enough

July is winter in Australia and it was about 18C or 65F. At the beginning of the video you can observe some mirage on the target. At the end of the video, which was taken a couple of hours later in the afternoon, it was cooler still and clearer. You can see shadows coming over the target from the trees on the right side of the range (west). View the video in full screen which defaults to HD mode. Yes, we love these scopes. Especially when the field conditions allow a view like this. Thanks
@StuartElliott54
@StuartElliott54 12 лет назад
Lots of people ask this question. It is no big deal at all. This old custom action has a port on the right side that is slightly small to allow the 300 Win Mag case to eject. So I simply removed the bolt stop mechanism and developed a technique to accommodate. The bolt has it's spring plunger removed also and therefore the extractor claw will pull the case straight all the way out..

Competitive benchrest requires two skills. The first is the operator's ability to hand load ammunition with incredibly tight tolerances and repeatable performance. The second is the operator's ability to accurately read the wind, and break the shot at a time that the cumulative crosswind either does not affect the shot, or affects it such that the rounds print tight groups. It isn't for everybody, but many firearms technological advances come out of benchrest and into the mainstream.
@StuartElliott54
@StuartElliott54 12 лет назад
This bolt action was made in 1993 for a smaller calibre cartridge (6mmPPC) so the port in the side is too small to eject 300 Win Mag cases. I use a new bolt (Magnum) and the 300 WM barrels now so have no choice but remove the bolt to eject each case. It may look unusual but you can see it is effective and as fast as modern actions with spring ejectors

The .300 win mag is my go to round. It's my deer hunting round and has been for a long time. Most say, "the .300 is way too much gun for whitetail." My reply is always, "It doesn't get any better when they drop right there." And of course you have excellent long range potential with the .300 and a LOT of smack when it gets there. I have taken shots out to 400 yds and they never take a step. Dead right there. Great shooting by the way. I load Berger's myself. I love their 185gr classic vld hunting bullet. I am loading the 210gr vld now with Alliant R-17 or Vithavouri N570. The Hodgdon 4831 you mention is a great powder in the .300 mag. Very versatile over a wide range of bullet weights. They make a sc (short granule) H4831. It's a little more consistent in the rifle we have shot it in. Berger has it down pat with those J4 jackets. For a match style bullet, they are the best bullet I have ever shot at deer. I can't stand the guy's who knock guy's like us benchrest shooters. They say, "Oh that's cheating" or "Anyone can shoot like that". I just shake my head when I see comments like that. Shooting extremely tight groups from ANY platform, at ANY range takes dedication and skill. Especially with a magnum rifle. The last person who said this at the range couldn't even hit a 16 x 16 paper target at 100yds with my rem 700 .300 mag. Lol. Anyways, great video and great shooting. I'm about to get into shooting smallbore rimfire (.22 lr) again. Looks like a CZ 455 action is going to be my base. Best of luck in the matches.

I modified the internals of the Farley rest to accomodate vertical acting coil springs on two plastic rods. This counteracts the rifle weight which is about 45lbs. Works well. I also have been experimenting with a prototype SEB rest and we are up to protype 2 now. This one should be in production (from Indonesia) soon as well. Look for my video called 1,000 yard Benchrest 27-11-11

I stand by my earlier comments - I understand that it takes some knowledge regarding ballistics to shoot a sled gun accurately. It still is not the same thing and really has no correlation to the concept of marksmanship. You take your gun out of the vice; set it up w/a bipod or rest it on some bags; shoot the same size group from the same distance that you do when it's locked in the sled then I'll say you demonstrated genuine marksmanship.
@silvermediastudio
@silvermediastudio 12 лет назад
I don't shoot benchrest myself, but I have learned tons from people who do, which in turn improved my overall marksmanship. Certainly, reading the wind and timing your shot to compensate for crosswind and heat shimmer is a component of markmanship, but isn't marksmanship in and of itself. I compare it to basketball... people compete in dunking competitions, foul shooting contests, dribbling skill contests, and the like.. which are part of basketball, but no single skill is basketball.

When I saw the pic on the vid I was going to make a neg comment , but hearing u have a 80 power scope says it all !! @avandelay2 It's a Farley Co-Ax joystick front rest that I internally modified to handle the 40 lb gun.
@StuartElliott54
@StuartElliott54 12 лет назад
No, the official rules in Australia and the UK allow the shooter to choose the system they prefer. Either wait till each shot is marked. Or have no shots marked to allow fast shooting. That is called "shooting blind". Most US organisations shoot the 'blind' method.

@GabLam0 To get that level of accuracy, you avoid anything that can deform the bullet even slightly, like forcing it from a mag up into the action.

@1967spud Yeah Spud when mirage gets bad I am down to 50x. But never below that. I like the Schmidt too but this is equal at 50x and then goes all the way to....80x Have a look at one of my other videos which is in HD mode. It's called "March 80x scope" on my youtube channel, BRT Shooters Supply. Make sure you click "fullscreen" which will force load HD mode and the resolution is better. A little mirage at the beginning but at the end of the video you will be surprised. Stuart

They had the new MSR at my local range, and they let anyone shoot 5 rounds, at a 8in disk, a 12 year old boy hit 4 out of 5 ... at 800yards..many others went 5 for 5...So the gun matters... now, with that said, if you start trying to group 10 shots in a 5inch circle at 1000 yards, there allot of factors! allot...

the problem with your argument is that you dont build an alcohol funny car to race in the indy 500 or cruise it around town on a sunday afternoon. it has a specific duty and what it is designed to do is benchrest perfection. he didnt build a sniper rifle or a hunting rifle. you cant compare apples to oranges.
@shannonstuck7940
@shannonstuck7940 12 лет назад
i think the main point is that he built a heck of a gun that shows how acc the gun is but we all know we cant out shoot our guns still in all very nice work an in such a short amount of time i really like that the gun held true in the middle of all that heat most barrels would have rose 4 to 6 inchs shooting that fast with that cal inch an a half barel or not

Hi Stuart..great shooting,,lovely outfit..cant beat the march for quality vision.. Was curious as to why you load the way you do and removed the eject mechanism.. An unusual method but im guessing in the interest of faster follow up shots,loading left hand and drop/replace bolt is quicker than unloading,reload and fire with one hand?? Ive seen a quicker method but it used a straight through action,,ie: left side load ,right eject....very quick system.. Great vid mate,and nice grouping at that range...got the edge on my RPA/GEMINI/BORDER outfit in 308 target rifle..my best is 50.8v.5x on icfra targets at that range..a little wind drift..larger group but put a big smile on my dial..
@StuartElliott54
@StuartElliott54 9 лет назад
welbuggame The reason is the port on this particular action is a tad small to properly eject the 300 Win Mag case. So I removed the bolt stop and adapted to this method of feeding from the rear. Works well and fast too so i'm happy.
@StuartElliott54
@StuartElliott54 12 лет назад
@TheSgtJellyfish Of course not. Lots of shooting of all types over here. In 1996 after that massacre in Tasmania they banned semi auto rifles and shotguns only. That was all. All bolt action and most pumps are OK, Auto Pistols are club use only

The problem with your argument, is that most of the physical work, such as support of the weapon, as well as control of said weapon, is being done by the rail. If a rifle is on a rail or sled, such as it is in this case, then it doesn't change position after with each shot, thus not changing the aim of the rifle. The end result......a weapon that requires nothing more to hit its target, than a pull of the trigger. Nothing more.

I'm sure that is true - if you observe - most of them appear to be about my age (61). I know all too well that I am no longer capable of holding steady enough to consistently hit an 8 inch target (shooting off hand) at 50 yards. There was a time when I could do that all day long if I wanted...not now. LOL.
