Those iron bars were a recent safety modification to stop naughty kids disappearing doon the loo. At one time there would have been a very comfy wooden seat and a lid.

Btw, in designing a castle, the architects even thought about defensibility on the stairs, They would look for the most likely points of enemy entry and would change the spin of the spiral staircase accordingly, so the defenders would have a better space of motion for their sword. This was under the assumption most people were right handed.

@@oyen148 I don’t think you can upgrade it much, you could do a Minecraft tour of ‘ restrooms ‘ through technological advancements from a simple hole in the ground to a Roman army communal latrine to a Norman castle garderobe to the modern bathroom with tripwire hook Faucets and iron trapdoor showers but i think that’s what your limited too . And frankly I don’t real care about the latter because my builds are always Iron Age through medieval

When I was a kid living in Luxembourg, our family visited a good number of castles all over Europe (Western). My brother and I always wondered how they did the dirty deed! We never saw anything like this!

Amazing, I was reading a book on the construction of castels, this is exactly what they showed. But I didn't see this in the tower of London. Other stuff but no going to the loo. 😅
Well the toilet seat isn't there. It would have been wooden with a hole in it similar to a modern toilet seat and it would have had a wooden lid to cover the hole when not being used, to keep the wind and smell out.
so many things about this is intriguing to me. not only is the design very smart , the spiral going upward probably reduces most or nearly all of the smell, esp with the little window. also it is very spacious(big enough for a wake and bake) and the hallway of course is designed for 1 person to fight off intruders, so it seems like a good last defense space. my only questions are where does this lead. and is it big enough for a last minute escape? the hole looks big enough for the kids or a skinny person lol
Those stairs should wind up to the right and down to the left so right handed swords men cannot swing their swords but those defending can. Must have been left handed.😂

Somewhere i want to believe that since there was no taco bell or fast food in general there wasnt any ruin your toilet with sprinkling diarea explosions back then otherwhise this would be hell during Summer and freezing balls due winter
but what is great about it that no matter who owns it - its temporarily, it gives feeling that you take care of something bigger than you and someone next also will work on it later
