The IAC bus allows you to create any number of virtual MIDI buses. This driver is built-in to OS X (since OS X 10.4) and can be activated in the Audio/MIDI Setup Utility.
To begin, launch Audio/MIDI Setup and select "Show MIDI Window" from the "Window" menu.
Now double-click the IAC Driver icon and check the option "Device is online" in order to activate it.

Your vid gave me some great ideas! Thanks for sharing this. Your part about 'legacy Reason midi' implementation vs your method is very helpful way to think about it.

I cannot thank you enough. I love Reason but I couldn't stand having to restart my machine every single time I wanted to switch controllers. I like to play my Roland Aerophone wind controller but obviously it's better to play some some instruments with a keyboard or pads. Now I can plug them all in and switch around as needed. Many thanks to you and the author of the codecs!

This was extremely helpful to me. Using Windows 10, Reason 11 and a DrumBeat Pro, it was a little bit of a puzzle. The MIDI changes weren’t “sticking” until I restarted Reason 11.

When you add midi ports etc Reason usually needs a restart, if you change mappings you can get away with reloading the surface controller.. but I'm glad you found this useful and you are up and running...

How do you get the USB Cable input though? That part is what's not clear to me. Other than that, this tutorial is great! I just can't do anything with it until I understand how that USB Cable is showing in your Midi Ox and DAW, and it seems to have already been configured to your 3 midi devices. If you wouldn't mind, could you explain that to me? Sorry if my question is all over the place
@PoohBearsReasonChannel
@PoohBearsReasonChannel 2 года назад
In my case with the cable I was using it was plug and play, with my audio devices (UR 2x2MkII) you just install the drivers for it, once they are installed the ports should present them selves to you. It really should be a case of just plug the USB cable in, if it's not working I would try the cable on another computer or if possible another midi interface (the MIDI to USB cable is classed as an interface here). I did not do any special configuration to my external gear apart from making sure the Korg was taking out on Midi channel 2.

Nice video. I have a question. I have an old Yamaha sy99, as it is a work station it is able to make songs. Is there a way setup the sy99 with reason as midi using reason as master, and when you press play in reason it also plays the current song on the sy99? Or failing that, can you send multiple midi channels out from the sy99 and create multiple midi tracks in reason playing the different sy99 midi tracks from the sy99. Sorry if that does not make much sense, I am still trying to figure it out
@PoohBearsReasonChannel
@PoohBearsReasonChannel Год назад
Under Preferences \ Sync they are options to set this up. As for you 2nd question, this video should have covered that, I could have set my Korg up 8 times on 8 different channels and hence record all the channels from my Korg at the same time (my Korg can talk on 8 channels at once). Now I have been down the route you are on many many years ago, I ended up recording all my songs from my workstations into Reason (using multiple midi channels) and in the end I now don't use my gear any more, OK I still use my Korg but only as a keyboard controller, maybe once or twice a year I play the sounds from it but as a solo instrument not with Reason. VST's sound better than my old gear (Korg T1, Roland D-70 and I have a W-30 but that is so lo-fi LOL) . Using Reason to play midi and external gear to play it's own midi, you get into all kinds of sync and jitter issues, best to record into Reason and playback from there, you can use the EMI or External Midi Out Device (depending on what version of Reason you are on) to send out to external gear on different midi channels at the same time.

@@PoohBearsReasonChannel thanks for the informative reply, I have subscribed 😌 yes I thought this is what you did with the korg but was bit unsure, I’m brand new to old gear into my daw. All vintage gear I’ve ever owned has been used on its own, or recorded as audio. Yea I am heading down this route! I have such a soft spot for my sy99, and it is also unique with its rcm fm capabilities. Also a rest from always using so much software.. also I’m sure I will also learn a lot going down this route. I do agree tho software sounds great, is so user friendly and pretty much limitless these days.

@@KUPHSER Hi, regarding your 2nd question, did you manage to get this to work? I have an SY77 full of my songs recorded years ago. In the past I have tried to record each track from an SY77 song onto a separate Reason track, but ran into a dead end as I could not figure out how to record all 16 tracks at once. And it became very tedious trying to do it one track at a time! But on stumbling upon this video, I started to wonder again whether it would be possible after all, using the method shown here. Do you have anything to report on how you went trying to do this with your SY99? Thanks!

@PoohBearsReasonChannel
@PoohBearsReasonChannel 9 месяцев назад
Just use the Midi Out Device (use to be called the EMI in older versions) it acts like an instrument so you put players on top of it or add all the notes you want into the Seq. To configure the Midi out Device select the hardware midi port and connect your OB6 to it and off you go.

I am trying to get the midi instrument individual tracks to record into reason using individual instruments in reason. Is there a way that the codec you suggested here will facilitate this? I got my drums to sync up and record but can’t get the midi tracks to work Again, thank you
@PoohBearsReasonChannel
@PoohBearsReasonChannel 4 года назад
If your drum machine is sending on different midi channels then yes this will work but it also comes down to what you mean by individual tracks as usually Drum machines talk on one channel and use different notes for different sounds. Need a lot more information, what do you mean by the midi tracks don't work? Did you setup the surface controller? Are you using Windows or Mac? What old drum machine is it?
@pdxfun4888
@pdxfun4888 4 года назад
My drum machine is all Lynn 9000. It used to be my recording device. Obviously, I would program the drums and then it also had a sequencer side where I would use hardware since. Each hardware synth had its own midi channel and then with the keyboard I would program performances and when I would record, each midi channel had its own sound. Bass, piano, strings etc. So, can reason be my sound modules for each midi channel ?
@PoohBearsReasonChannel
@PoohBearsReasonChannel 4 года назад
Yes it can be your sound modules for each midi channel, Note: Even though I used 3 different devices the Korg in the video supports multi midi channels at the same time and I could (and have) sent all those channels to Reason and record them on different tracks at the same time, of course I could have done individual channels if I have wanted. There are some notes in the description of the video about setting things up on a Mac using the IAC. I don't know Mac's so I won't be a great help there, but once you have it talking to your Mac getting to work in Reason is the same as in the video. Using the EMI (pre Reason 11) or the Midi Out device you can talk to your external devices.

Cheers. My biggest problem is controlling synth patches FROM Reason. I know you need to set MSB, LSB and bank change messages, but I can not work out how to save these three MIDI blocks as a combinator patch (which contains multiple EMI for LFO, Cutoff etc).
@PoohBearsReasonChannel
@PoohBearsReasonChannel 5 лет назад
For some reason RU-vid has stopped notifying me of comments, arh, I think I may have seen you post up on one of the Reason groups on facebook. The MIDI Bank Select message is used for selecting specific banks of sounds/programs/presets in MIDI instruments that feature several sound banks. There is no specific panel control for MIDI Bank Select in the External MIDI Instrument device. However, you can use the regular MIDI Controller automation described below for inserting Bank Select automation points. MIDI Bank Select normally uses MIDI CC #0 and/or #32. Refer to the MIDI documentation of your specific instrument for details. Note that MIDI instruments that have several banks of sounds usually expect a Bank Select message to be immediately followed by a Program Change message in order to change the bank and program/preset. In these situations, sending only a Bank Select message - without a subsequent Program Change message - will not change anything. Note that Reason only sends out MIDI CC data when they actually change. This means that you might have to send a different “temporary” MIDI CC value just before you send the actual MIDI CC value. For example, if you want to resend the value “1” for MIDI CC#32, first send another value (e.g. “0” or “2”) and then send the value “1” immediately afterwards. You can do this by adding and/or moving automation points in the automation clip for MIDI CC#32 in the sequencer..

Anyone figure this out for BeatStep Pro? I even moved to MIDI instead of the USB/MIDI to try & get it as accurate as the video & Reason is still reading from the Omni channel using LoopMIDI to point to each piece. The MIDI-OX is showing the correct channel being played for each sequencer & drum machine. I then went over to Bitwig 3 & found it doing the same thing, but in Bitwig there is an option to force the track to only read a specific channel. It's really infuriating how Reason has made this so difficult. I'm completely flummoxed on how to get it to separate out the channels on Reason 10.
@PoohBearsReasonChannel
@PoohBearsReasonChannel 5 лет назад
Did you setup the full 16 surface controllers in Reason? and point them to individually to separate devices in Reason?
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 5 лет назад
@@PoohBearsReasonChannel I tried setting up LoopMidi with Channel 1, 2, and 10 (these are the three used by BSP) and when I click a pad on the BeatStep Pro, it shows that it's reading it from a given channel, but in Reason, it still just plays all of it. Another test I did was setup the BSP with Studio One and then slaved Reason with Rewire. I tested it with using Ch 1 and 10 for a Noise Engineering module & Kong (both in Reason), & the Mai Tai on Ch 2. This all worked, but it was difficult to save all of it & I'm still trying to figure out how the hell Studio One works as simple things you take for granted in Bitwig or Reason are confounding to find in Studio One. And not sure how to save my work. When I try to record, the BSP is activated to record as well & there's a lot of MIDI generated to the recording. It really needs to be recording just the audio I think as the MIDI is an absolute mess. The other problem I noticed is that I can't automate the Reason knobs through Rewire. Nothing happens when I try to assign it. I can assign an encoder/knob from BSP to the Mai Tai, but not to anything in Reason. It just doesn't work. I'll have to try messing with it again, but so far it's a mess. The only DAW that worked with all three sequencers for BSP without much fuss was Bitwig. Studio One took forever to get working & it's far from perfect. I'm really puzzled with Reason so far. It shouldn't be this hard to get it working.
@PoohBearsReasonChannel
@PoohBearsReasonChannel 5 лет назад
@@shitmandood Have you tried setting it up using the Koshdukai Codec's ? that's my preferred method. If you use the Midi-OX method remember you have configure which midi channels you want only to talk the midi loopback ports, in your case you will need 3 loopback ports configured for each channel.
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 5 лет назад
@@PoohBearsReasonChannel Blast! So here are the results: - I have the BSP setup for USB/MIDI. - The BSP uses Channels 1, 2, and 10 for its sequencers so I added the Koshdukai Codec's to Reason per your instructions. - Next, I choose to lock the Channel 1 codec to that device. Which means Control and Seq 1 should work from the BSP and not Seq 2 or the Drum Seq due to being on different channels. - Next, I record a beat on Seq 1 (Channel 1) and it plays. It seems to be working. - I then switch to Seq 2 (Channel 2), I click a pad & the sound registers on the device. So it seems to be ignoring the Codec. Do you think I'd have better luck if I went back to using the MIDI Input on the Audio Interface? I'm on the latest Reason 10.4. Although I don't think it worked any differently when I tried yesterday. Somehow Reason is smart enough to know that all three channels are coming from the BSP. On the upside, the transport is working, the encoders map to controls (I'm playing with these amazing Noise Engineering modules in Reason), & the sequencer records. Just can't seem to setup all three sequencers to control different instruments. I've got a Volca Drum I'm going to try to control with the BSP tomorrow & see if I can get the audio of it to record in while working on a sequencer in Reason, but of course I can't return to the drums once the other instrument is playing in Reason because Reason would pickup that channel & start playing the sequence on the drums. And I found another problem with Reason too! There's a feature called "Easy MIDI Inputs" under Control Surfaces that had the BSP listed there automatically. When I was slaving Reason to Studio One, Reason wouldn't open because it found the BSP MIDI was locked out. So I disabled the BSP in "Easy MIDI Inputs". When I later re-opened Reason as stand-alone, I found the BSP was deleted entirely from "Easy MIDI Inputs". I then tried the same with a LoopMIDI channel that it found. Just disabled it, closed/re-opened Reason, & found that the LoopMIDI entry was missing as well. I have no idea where it is & opened a ticket with Reason to find it. I could not get the BSP to work without it. However, I was able to use the Koshdukai Codec to get the BSP to work again at least, because it's finding those channels being used by the BSP. I don't know if the Easy MIDI Input may have helped with the codec or not. It's just weird that Reason can't distinguish the channels via these Codecs being setup. It seems it should work, but maybe it's because it's three channels from the same device & not a separate midi device entirely?
