STORY
Join us on a journey to the enchanting Island of Iceland, where we found one of the last remaining Icelandic Turf Farms. Although this place is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is sadly mostly abandoned now.
As people settled across Iceland, there was a need to help them cross the challenging glacier that separated the east and west of the island. The family who settled here in the 19th century became experts at navigating the challenging terrain, and their skills were crucial for anyone wanting to cross the glacial river. For about 200 years, generations of this family skillfully transported travelers and earned a living. The last ones to do this were two brothers born in 1907 and 1910. After many decades, the government finally built a bridge across the river, and the brothers could enjoy their well-earned pension. Both of them lived here until their final days, with the oldest brother passing away at 97 and the youngest one at 100 in 2010. The farm is abandoned but occasionally, there are small tours, but it's unclear who manages them or owns the place. The farm is preserved exactly as it was when the brothers passed away, with all their belongings still in the house, including family photos, their smithing shop, and even the sleds they used to navigate the challenging terrain.
Even more unique is the smallest turf church in the world located on the
property, built in the late 1600s. Notably, the two brothers are buried in the
backyard of the church.

Did the house have electricity from a land-line source, or run off a generator? Your videos are always so interesting, largely because you research the property and know what you want to show your viewers. Was the property accessible by land (I presume so), or by boat? Would there have been fish or shellfish to eat?

Hey dear Lesley this was really an absolutely outstanding documentation about the turf houses in Iceland. I also hope, that especially the farmhouse with the diffetent barns is going to be preserved, because I had the impression walking with you through a museum, as everything was so well preserved and left behind in exactly the state, after the last owners have sadly passed away. - The turf church was fascinating to see, and I was so touched, when listening the deep reflections from you and Danny about the trees growing from the graves. - The countryside views are spectacular and with that mist it had a very mystical atmosphere. - You and Danny did again a brilliant job with filming and documenting this remote location in Iceland. - I also loved listening to the historical background facts. A wonderful explore video, which I very much enjoyed watching. Respect, bros! Wishing you all the best, stay safe, peace and kindest regards from Switzerland.

Can't blame you for standing in awe of the beautiful scenery. If it had been me, I wouldn't have been able to film at all. I love the little grove of trees in the memorial and behind the church. I could spend days just looking around and it still won't be enough.

That is a pump organ. You have to pump those two pedals to build of the air to force the air through the pipes. We had an old one in the Lutheran church in Sitka. We children used to love playing it. The sewing machine upstairs was also manual -- not electric. You would push the treadle and that turned the wheel on the side (like even electric machines have) and that would move the needle up and down through the cloth. So these two items were from before there was electricity to the house. That farm is in one incredibly beautiful spot!!!

Narrator, that is a manual pedal organ. The gentleman who lived in that room was smart keeping it in his small bedroom to keep it warm. The way one makes it play is by pumping the pedals with your feet then play the keys with your fingers. Very excited to see these two brothers had this fine instrument to keep them warm and happy!

Every time I say this is my favorite place the you’ve explored, you take us to another spectacular one, but this my friend may be hard to beat! The wood scraping tool is better known as a plane or planer. I believe the one shown may be a plane because of it's size, certainly larger than my father possessed, but the real answer would come from a wood artisan :) The saw reminds me of one of my father's. I'm 75 & my dad, though an engineer was more like men of old, who were multi-talented in many things because if nothing else, they repaired rather than replaced. I have saved his old tools & my mom's kitchen artifacts (in memorium of the goats shown here, hehe)

If people ever want to know how to survive 'of grid', even in extremely harsh conditions, then an inventarisation of the tools in these barns is a treasure. It surprises me though that these iron roofs of the houses are so poorly insulated, compared to the barns and walls. Maybe in the early days they were also more covered? You two documenting these unique places is so dear, and changing the camera and the storytelling makes it even more lively! Marvelous!!! And me too do hope the Icelandic government will understand how much these places are worth to preserve, in the most original way, with all these belongings of the inhabitants. This is a real world-treasure!!!
