I went broke trying to sell insurance. I drained my savings and had to take money out of my annuity. I left owing the company I worked for over $2500 for customers who flaked out on their policies. I worked over time, never missed a training meeting, joined the chamber of commerce, bought leads, went to promotional events, spoke to members of rotory clubs and held an informational brunch which I paid for. I did all this because I truly believed I would succeed. Now I'm broke.

I've been in the business about 14-15 months with no production. I related to a majority of the reasons and it really hit when you talked about MLM insurance companies. Described my last broker to a tee. Literally only 2 people were selling in a room where the majority didn't even have a license. I'm not quitting, though, and I'm actually ecstatic that I found you and so eager to go through your content and read your books!

Great Video! I've been in the business for 5 years now and I have struggled but I learned to broaden my product base. In my district I have about 23 agents. We are a rural district. There have been 7 agents appointed since I became an agent and only 1 of the those 7 are still here. So I do agree there is large amount of turnover. But this is a rewarding business, you just have to put in the work and stay motivated. Thank you for the video.

I didn't quit I was let go. I found booking appointments to be the most difficult part of the job because most of the appointments didn't even show up. They told me that I needed to make 100 calls a day and that I would be able to book 4. The problem I had was I wasn't making enough phone calls and when I got making more phone calls all of those people that I called were people that I called over and over again and it seems like if you keep calling the same people they tend to not pick up.

I was in the business for 3 months and hated every single second of it. My “coaches” kept pushing me to sell to friends and family. I was also given a previous book of business to where all of the clients were sick of a rotating door of agents and couldn’t stand even fielding a call from me. I did not make 1 sale in 3 months because I didn’t want to sell out my friends and family. My only experience with this business was negative which is sad because I believe in the product. If there is a 90% fail rate then something has to change with the industry, not your “mindset”.

@motomoto5438 2 года назад
By the way I really enjoy listening to you, even if I disagree with some of your premise.
@TheDIGAgency
@TheDIGAgency 2 года назад
Thank you for your comment. If I came off as entirely blaming a "poor mindset" for the reason most new agents fail, then I apologize. I definitely believe a big part of the failure is a lack of due diligence on behalf of the aspiring agent in investigating the characteristics of the agency they're thinking of joining, such as how prospecting is done, commission levels, culture (mass recruit versus a focus on sales). Granted, new agents are understandably ignorant of the realities of this industry, which is predominantly motivated via MLM principles. That's why I try to do my part as best as possible to educate and inform =).
@gina-yh8hv

So true! I was so convinced I would be successful if I just jumped in with both feet and stayed positive. I stayed in the business way too long drinking the positivity kool-aid and now I'm completely broke.
@TheOpinionSports

That’s why people can make a ton of money in the insurance industry. Anything where people can make a ton of money is only going to be a 10% success rate. If the success rate was a lot higher that would over time decrease the compensation made cause there wouldn’t be as much people to close.

I quit because of my manager's treatment of my secretary when I wasn't around. I was there from 2012-2016. This year, I joined a different company/agency. I think the culture is better here. Managers treat your people well or else they will leave you. 😅

I quit because I just was not a good salesman. I could not generate leads which lead me to relying on cold calls and door to door knocking-- generally not a recipe for success. Held onto my license for a couple years on the off chance I wanted to try again, but ultimately I decided to forfeit it. I needed guaranteed income so I ended up trading the dress clothes and laptop for gloves and boots. Insurance sales is not for everyone and that's ok.

This is like asking people why they stopped going to the gym... 5% do and 95% don't. The "reasons" don't mean ANYTHING. Every successful agent you interview talks about their time spent at a bad agency... and their bad leads... and the 2-3 times they ran out of money... and how they just weren't good at sales in general.
@TheDIGAgency
@TheDIGAgency 4 года назад
You're right but there is value in seeing this, reading between the lines to come to this conclusion, and also taking away the importance of considering things like proper financing, lead systems, and vetting the agency to make sure it's an appropriate fit.

David seems like a very good guy, and I believe he is, or he wouldn't even make a video dealing with this subject. However, a 90-95% agent failure rate pretty much tells me that there are just a few people out there that can SELL. They definitely can do it and most just can't. I've noticed this in various types of sales work as a minister I talk to people in Jewlery sales, clothing and other lines of work that involves selling. It you have the "nac" for it then definitely do it but if you don't its a tough way to go. However you never know unless you try.
@TheDIGAgency
@TheDIGAgency 2 года назад
There's some truth to this, otherwise the mass recruiting MLMs wouldn't follow the spaghetti method. However, I believe there is a grey area where the difference between success and failure for an agent depends on training, support, lead systems, etc. That's where my agency operates.

My first agency was horrible. They kept telling me dont learn the numbers or the business but just keep recruiting and running old leads. They forbid me from buying new leads even when I had the money and had 6 months experience. Im with a good agency now, but watching that first place scam desperate people was almost enough for me to quit entirely. I still feel bad for recruiting a few people into that when I hadnt made a dime. I ended up blocking my upline because he kept trying to get me to buy the ceo's motivational material. Whole place was like a cult.

Not every agency out there will require you to buy leads. If you do your research there are plenty of companies out there that will provide you with a current and workable lead system. They may take a slightly higher % of commission in the beginning to offset the leads you don't have to pay for those companies do exist. I found at least two or three of them. Secondly, you can work for another company, like a P/T telesales Final Expense company or something to help substitute your income in the beginning. Not everyone has to buy a leads program and bankrupt themselves to make it. You can also go full time and work as an employee as a telesales agent to start, if you're not comfortable going out on your own at first. But to reach six figures, you will need to eventually align with a company that has great training, a good mentor and has a great vesting and residual income program. Basically, a company vested in your success! They are out there!

I just wrote almost the exact thing in my own comment above. One month is not possible. It took me five months to place my first LTC policy after making the decision to do this. It takes time to study for the test, and then the training, if it's good, should take a lot of time. It is harder than you think, but if you are persistent you will make it.

I am just recently entering the business with intense mandatory trainings. I am soending anywhere from 15 hrs per week on trainings while holding a full time job. It is too much because a lot of the training is more on the soft skill but the way they design it… not in my natural way. Some techniques seems pushy and too wordy. And I really want to learn thru job shadowing instead of virtual and recorded trainings. A month into this without the ability to sell until I reach a certain progression in the training, I complained to another agent over a virtual session (zoom). Unbeknownst to me, the training director overheard and he startled us when he started berating me over my complaints of mandatory trainings that are overdone on some topics without being seen on zoom. He threatened to “fire” me and reported me to my manager and the managing partner to terminate me. This behavior has completely switched the trajectory of my confidence in continuing. I have a great mentor and my manager defended me and they want me to forget about the incident. But, I no longer am passionate about working for them. Another consideration for quitting was my recruiter wasnt completely forthcoming abt the expectations before I went thru with the licensure even though I asked all the right questions. I kept discovering things that were overshadowed overtime and I was willing to overlook them given that I have a great mentor and my manager is very motivating. A part of me says dont let one bad apple… another said that behavior was unacceptable as there are better way to handle esp for someome at that level. This is a partnership relationship and we need each other. So at this stands…. I am 50/50 with my committment. What do you think I should ask my self to make a decision solid?
