Hi Ian, that's a bargain price indeed! My 27 was derailing because the hooks on the buffer beams were a fraction of a millimetre too low, and were catching on the bogies (video 20 - you've already seen it). It was always the end wheels that came off though, rather than inner ones.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 5 месяцев назад
Good morning Jonathan! Ah, yes! I'd completely forgotten that you'd had a similar problem! I've taken a quick look, and the bogies seem to swing freely, but I'll take a closer look over the weekend! I'm almost convinced it's the track work, as the pins are pretty loose in that area, and it's the only place that the loco derails! Thanks for the reminder though! Cheers, Ian.
@iansngauge

Hey Jonathan! You'll never guess what? After going back and forth from the track to the bogie, it turned out to be the hook on the bufferbeam that was causing the problem! I couldn't even tell it was too low, I just moved it up "a bit" and the derailments stopped! Thanks for saving me so much time troubleshooting this issue! All the best, Ian.

@@iansngauge Hi Ian, that's starting to look like a common issue now, with a few of us having experienced that, but at least it's an easy fix. Yes the tolerances are minute, but make all the difference! Thanks for letting me know - it's good to know you were able to sort it out 🙂
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 5 месяцев назад
@@endoorrailway - I'm beginning to wonder if that's why they're so cheap? Maybe that's the cynic in me! I'll be making a video about the fix, but will obviously be crediting you with finding it! The more information about these things the better right? Thanks again! Ian
@endoorrailway
@endoorrailway 5 месяцев назад
@@iansngauge A video about it makes perfect sense - it's something you've tackled, so it charts part of Shelfington, and more videos makes the fix more discoverable for people - so good on two fronts :) Thanks for considering crediting me, but don't worry about it if it doesn't fit the flow of the video - I'm not precious about it :)

Evening Ian - the 27 is a lovely loco. No running issues with the one I have. Didn't realise Rails did weathering! Its been nicely done from what I could see. Cheers Euan

Morning Euan! Yes, I really like the 27! I noticed that Rails had started to do weathering a while back, and will definitely be trying their service again! All the best, Ian.

Hi Frank! I'm assuming that the pricing of locos and rolling stock in the USA is similar to here in the UK? The class 27 was definitely bargain of the year so far! Lol! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian. That grampus looks very nice. My 27s are minitrix so can't comment on running issues but the dapol model looks good and irresistible at that price. Your issue might be the rail joint being at the bottom of the incline which can lead to flanges finding a gap, had to re lay my incline when that happened to me on an old layout as the length was sufficient to cause the joint to be either the top or the bottom so I had to cut a length in the middle to fix, luckily my incline was straight as I don't like joints on curves either, but hopefully your issue will go when your temporary track is fully laid.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 5 месяцев назад
Hi Michael! Yes, the Grampus wagon is a little beauty! You're right, it was too good an offer to resist bagging the class 27! Having fiddled with the bogies, I'm leaning towards the problems being with the track! The track pins are fairly loose in that area, and the track has a tendency to move about, so I'll take a closer look over the weekend! Thanks for your insights! All the best, Ian.

Until I saw your ultra-closeup, I hadn't realised how much the Grampus load looks like white Toblerone. If I end up with a Toblerone mine on my layout, I'll know who to blame! 😉

Hi, I don’t have a 27, but the derailing could be a couple of issues. Firstly the side on which the wheel pops may indicate the track is dipping on that side. However as it didn’t happen when switched around possibly shows the bogie is a little tight and needs loosening off slightly. Could be turning retaining screw 1/4 -1/2 turn. As it runs well the way you had it leave it. When you lay the main track use a tiny spirit level to check for level. It’s points, crossings in/ declines where these things happen or if someone was trying to get an extra tight curve with flexi track. Hoping that’s helpful
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 5 месяцев назад
Hi John! Thanks for your suggestions! I'm leaning towards the problem being with the track rather than the loco, but I'll take a closer look at matters over the weekend! I actually have a tiny spirit level that I used to use on my record deck to ensure the discs ran level for the pickup! I'm sure I can repurpose it! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, good to see you back, I do like that class 27 and what a good price! The weathering looks good too, I might try that next time. I usually get Rails to put the decoder in if I buy from them and the Model Centre actually who also do an excellent weathering service. Having the decoder installed saves a lot of faff but then What about running in as your meant to run it in on the blanking plate🤔🤷🏻‍♂. Not sure about the derailing issue did it only do it the once? I also liked the wagons too, lovey editions and they looked to run very well! Cheers Ian, John
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 5 месяцев назад
Good morning John! Yes, if all locos were priced like the 27, I'd be buying one every week! Lol! Yes, I'm particularly pleased with the weathering, and will definitely get them to do it again on other locos I purchase from them - especially if they're reduced in price!!! Yeah, I'm probably going to get decoders fitted if possible, although they've fitted a Dapol Imperium decoder, which I know my DR5000 dislikes! I'm not sure if it supports Railcom either, so would need to replace it when I get automation up and running - obviously a long way off that though! No, derailing happens every time at that same place when running "fan end" first! I'll take a closer look over the weekend! I'm super pleased with the Grampus wagon and the brake van too! It was a good month for purchases! All the best, Ian.

Greetings, Shelfington, and hello Ian 👋 Three great new additions 🤩 especially the Class 27 😍 Rails did a nice job on the weathering 👀 but they could have done something to the bogey that caused your derailment 🤔 these things are meant to trial our patience 😇 Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️

Good morning Wickford, and hello Paul! Yes, I'm really pleased with all of my new acquisitions, and am especially pleased with the weathering that Rails performed! Yeah, I did wonder whether they'd "knocked" something during the weathering process, but there's nothing obvious! Will take a closer look at the problem over the weekend! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian. Hello! I didn't notice any derailment after the first(?) one - were there more? Upon your "recommendation" I have just ordered the Dance Hall brake van. Where on Earth (or any other planet) did you find that "music"?
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 5 месяцев назад
Hi Paul! The loco derailed consistently at the same point when travelling "fan end" first, but I only showed it once! The other circuits were performed "exhaust end" first, and the loco performed impeccably! You won't be disappointed with the brake van, it's a real beauty! The music was of my own making, so sorry you didn't like it! All the best, Ian.

Hi Dave! Yes, swapping the bogies around was one of the first things I tried, but to no avail! I'm going to take a closer look over the weekend, but am leaning towards it being a test track issue! Oh yes, the Dance Hall brakes are beautiful models! All the best, Ian.

@iansngauge

@@davidrauger - Yes, it always derails at the "exhaust end" of the loco, regardless of which set of bogies are placed at that end, which leads me to think it's a track issue, rather than a bogie issue! Cheers, Ian.

Hi, Ian. Uncanny! I had the Rails 27 page open on my desktop for a good week or so, trying to justify the £118 purchase price. Then, the 30% discount email dropped, and it was purchased before I finished reading the email! 🤣 Without it leaving the box, it's been sent off to my DCC sound fitting contact, so can't comment on the running performance of mine. As sson as I get it back, and I've got something substantial for it to run on, I'll let you know. The Rails weathering looks good, by the way, hope you get to the bottom of the derailing. The Grampus and brake look good too. All the best.

Hi Nigel! Haha! I hadn't really considered the 27! It was on my list of eventual locos, but not very high up to be honest! However, like you, as soon as I saw the price in the email, I couldn't get it into my basket fast enough! Lol! I'm very pleased with the weathering job they did! I'm looking forward to seeing how yours performs with sound! Yes, the Grampus wagon is a little beauty, and the Dance Hall brake a real treat to have on the layout! Cheers, Ian.
