This video was originally published on October 15, 2009 & was never added to RU-vid...until today!
Original post on our site with additional information, plans, questions & comments: www.thewoodwhisperer.com/video...
A brief introduction to the world of flush trim bits. Flush trim bits come in all shapes and sizes, but they all share the same basic anatomy. After watching this video, you'll have a much better idea of which ones to buy and when to use them. I also do a quick demo using a pattern bit (a variation of the flush trim bit).
This video accompanies an article what was published in Popular Woodworking Magazine called "Get the Most From Your Router". thewoodwhisperer.com/files/get...
And if you are interested in that big fat pattern bit, you can get those in William Ng's Store: wnwoodworkingschool.com/shop/i...

Pleasant speaking voice, clear wording, no vocalized pauses, good video editing. Nicely done. Very watchable.

The small and exquisite small drill bit has exerted great performance under your project and produced great engineering projects. Learn from you!

this is great tip thanks. I'm new to routing and can see that the router has a wide range of uses.

Was watching your videos a decade ago. Retired and have a huge workshop with a hammer c331 table saw and festool. Have no talent what so ever but loved watching your tips and tricks. Looking forward to reading learning my tools and starting some new projects. My domino has me stumped it’s over 10 years old but never used. It is difficult to line up the joints have you done a video with domino not lining up making window boxes and they are all screwed. I bought the festool marker which attached to the domino but looks useless to me. Anyway we are in lockdown here in Victoria Australia so spending all day in my workshop. Just opened my 1400 router and needed to learn how to use it. You have got me all fired up lol. Stay safe. Love your work

I am guessing you have the DF500. That stoopid plastic lens shifts. 1/16" off means you are 1/8' off. It is the Achilles heal of the DF500. You can slide it in proper place by loosening it, flipping it over the tool , aligning center mark/line with factory line on base on Domino and you should be good to go. But, I have been frustrated with the fence and the fact that it can drift. There are 2 after market solutions. One is by Seneca and I forget the name of the other one (MC?, two letters) - it is from Britain, I believe. With either of these gadgets installed, the DF is then used upside down and has MUCH better stability and accuracy. The Domino is one of the best woodworking tools ever. You'll love it once you know the ins and outs, no pun intended. Woodpeckers makes one but it is in production once every 18 months. There are plenty of videos on everything I mentioned. Good luck. And "no talent?" You just need two things: Desire and practice; with that comes talent.

Thanks I was struggling to use a router to remove a lot of material from a big recessed area in a bench but now I will use the router for the edges and finishing the bottom only, and try to remove the bulk of material with a drill and forstner bit

I have a dewalt router with variable speed. I am wondering what speed would you recommend when using a flush trim bit with a hard wood like oak? (Thickness is 11/16 for reference)
@txholeyrocks
@txholeyrocks 10 лет назад
I do acrylic work and use flush trim bits often. About once of twice every couple years I use a the bottom bearing router bit. Top bearing flush trim bits also come in 3 flute. Surprised that was not mentioned. The more flutes you have the cleaner cut your project will have.

It looks like the collet is larger diameter than the bearing so how do you plunge without having the collet hit the surface?

Wondered how you would use a flushtrim bit that is smaller than the thickness of the wood. Would you flip it over and hit it from both sides?

Hi - Re: Big Daddy - am looking for best (largest?) trim/pattern bit to try to avoid tear-out on endgrain w/o buying a wood shaper - would you recommend the BD or maybe a larger diameter router bit plus bearing?

What kind of double stick tape do you use. I have had to nail my template to my workpiece to make it stay since I can't make the template not move any other way.
@duczman76
@duczman76 4 года назад
🤔 another way is to put painter-tape on the template and the workpiece and glue the template with superglue to the workpiece.that should prevent the slipping without using any kind of nails

Would you be kind enough to advise me of the name of the manufacturer or technical name for the flush trim router bit with the spiral/angle cutting blades. I'll be darned if I can find them listed.

hi - im looking for a trim bit that cuts a flange or lip on bottom - so the bearing is at the top, im trimming plastic formed items - an alphabet letter that needs a flange on it when cut out to it can be glued on a flat surface and look like a 3d letter afterwards - looked everywhere - so imagine a non flush trim bit with a smaller diameter shaft than the top bearing - thanks

Don't know if you still see this thread anymore, but can you give a link or tell the brand/model name of that thick plastic circle template? For years I've wished I had a circle template thick enough to use with a pattern bit, but the thickest ones I've ever seen are less than 2mm thick. Or anyone else who knows, please post? Thanks!
