It needs to be pointed out that all four members of 10CC had amazing voices, incredible musicianship, were intelligent composers, and had innovative engineering skills. I would argue that they are the most underrated band of all time.
Absolutely ... and on top of that they were brilliant 'live' musicians. A lot of their stuff was so slick, well produced and full of textures, harmonies that it would not have been a surprise if the live versions sounded inferior to the studio stuff. But they were absolute;ly tight as a live band. I saw a comment a few weeks ago that said they were great - perhaps not quite in the league of 'Queen but still great. But at the time they were definitely rated alongside Queen and at times even higher. They've become underrated over the last 20 years - among the heaving masses anyway. You're right about the qualities of all 4 guys. I think it was Graham during an interview a while back that said they were one of the few, if not the only, band where every member could write/compose, play, sing and engineer/produce album quality tracks completely on their own without assistance if required
+Composer28 Indeed... And yet their first hit was "I'm A Neanderthal Man", a piece of bubble-gum banality that makes "Frere Jacques" sound like a work of art.
NoneOfYour Beeswax But the band that recorded Neanderthal Man was without Graham Gouldman. It needed all four of them to make it work. In any case Neanderthal Man was a song that arose out of one of Kevin Godley's lengthy drumming sessions, used for Eric Stewart to test the capabilities of their new recording studio. Lol creme started playing to accompany Kevin Godley. Jonathan King heard this jam session and said that it was a hit. So they tinkered with it and released it. You could call it an accidental hit.
Dumfries Spearhead Saw them live a fortnight ago , only Gouldman left now but still a great gig . They played the whole of 'Sheet music' 1st half then the hits 2nd half .
It was mind-blowing when it came out in 1975 and reached number 1 in the UK charts. Now, 45 years later, it isn't 'dated' at all. Now we understand its complexities, and what the lads went through to produce it, it is really one of the greatest pieces of popular music ever produced. A big shout out too for 10CC's I'm Mandy, Fly Me. Another piece of musical genius from 1976.
My gosh! I've always loved "I'm Not In Love" (and 70s music). Now, knowing the painstaking process they went though to get there makes me love it more. Wow! 10cc, you are geniuses!
From David A.Wood: Hello again, fellow RU-vidrs! David from Kettering, Ohio is back here. I first happily heard "I'm Not In Love," or at least bits of it, on a local AM radio station in Dayton, Ohio, WING, when I was a teenager, probably while I was in the middle of High School during the late 1970s. The intriguingly subtle "I'm Not In Love" was one of the first non-R&B songs to which I earnestly paid rapt attention. Later on, when I first fully heard the song as a High School Senior while watching the rather chessy, yet compelling 1979 film, "The Stud" on Cable TV during one very late night in April 1982, I found "I'm Not In Love" to be a seductively captivating and also an emotionally compelling song. With that favorable opinion still to this day firmly planted in my mind, it is no wonder that the restrainedly elegant "I'm Not In Love" is 10cc's signature song. 10cc's signature song was, and still is, one of my favorite Love Songs. Having proudly stated how "I'm Not In Love" made me sentimentally feel, I will be perfectly frank by further saying that 10cc's seductively captivating song still instinctively makes me emotionally swoon in a fantasist's fashion everytime I fortunately hear it! Finally, I enjoyed the documentary on 10cc's signature song and their career. Please do keep up the good work. Goodbye for now and have yourselves a really nice day (Sunday, January 21, 2024), everybody. Peace Out! ☮️
Being born in 1970, this must be my first music memory. It feels like it anyway. That tune has always been a part of my life. I'm very much in love with I'm not in love!
My girlfriend who I loved broke up with me several months later after this song came out it, still reminds me of her to this day & now I’m 70.. still a bitter sweet song for me .. but I suspected it was a complex record, now I realise how complex. 10cc music geniuses.
What a great coincidence mine also left me the year after this wonderful and impressive musical work, she left in September 1976 and to date I get a lump in my throat, it seems like it was yesterday, I was 19 years old and today I am 66 May you rest in peace, now that almost 50 years have passed
This song stands alone at the top of popular music. There is absolutely NOTHING like it. Beyond creative and innovative. This band brought 4 equally talented but unique individuals together to make some of the most enjoyable and exciting music ever!
Why? Hardly any of it is electronic music. I used to think that the lush sound of this track was created with synthesizers. I'm amazed to learn that it is all vocal tracks and the only keyboard to be found are a piano, a Fender Rhodes and the Moog synth kick drum sound.
Heath Weber because it shows how using different techniques can get amazing techniques. Not to mention in most music production courses, you do studio recording techniques too, which this would be useful for
I was a small kid in '75, living in England where my father was stationed in the Air Force. My parents were really into music and even had a pioneer Quadraphonic stereo system. I spent many hours listening to tape recorded music and albums. Would often get current "Top of the Pops" LP albums, and this became a favorite song of mine.... It brings back a flood of memories every time I hear it.
the same notion that they cannot build pyramids today, they can't produce songs like this either - one of the best recordings of all time like Good Vibrations or Bohemian Rhapsody, I'm Not In Love is timeless. 10cc, an incredible collective talent...
I heard this story a while after the song was released.. The magic, is really the build up of the tape hiss. This was a mind boggling song for it's time.. still is...
Ha, good point. All that bouncing of vocal tracks would certainly have built up a good deal of hiss back in the days of tape recording. In this case it became an integral part of the magic of this song.
And this is Kathy, the studio secretary.” What’s Kathy’s last name, she should be famous for her contribution, not just “Kathy, the secretary.” I do adore this song and it’s wonderful to hear the details of its creation. There’s NOTHING else like it; perfect song! Cheers, Kathy! Well done! 👍🏻
In 75 this song came out and blow every one away...they were genuinely geniuses who glazed the trail for band's like Vangelis and countless more!!!.♥️🇬🇧
Sampling before there was sampling - Geniuses! I always wondered how they could have sampled their voices before the Fairlight CMI. Thanks for posting!
This song is absolute pure magic. I grew up with this song. I don't think anyone has come remotely close to matching the imagination that went into recording this. People who go to music recording school should be forced to listen to this video.
I agree that a lot of imagination went into the recording process, but disagree that no-one has come close to matching the imagination that went into it. You should look up how The Beatles recorded a lot of their music, including Sgt Pepper. That was truly imaginative.
"Big Boys Don't Cry"...I'm so astounded by this I'm actually reduced to tears. These men obviously cared a lot about what they were doing and trying to accomplish to put that much time and effort into this recording. Groundbreaking. No other record sounded like it at the time. Always captivated me as a kid. Got angry when on "American Top 40" it got stuck at #2 for 3 weeks behind Van McCoy's "The Hustle", The Eagles' "One Of These Nights" and The Bee Gees' "Jive Talkin'"- 3 DIFFERENT SONGS!!!
Haha. Heard it first when I was 5 in '75! I was at an indoor ice rink in the lobby of hotel and it was playing there. I remember being mesmerized by it even then. Still love it! How could you not?
Analog masterworks of sonic excellence. When I was a kid this song always sounded like the way music is in dream. It was ethereal , now I know why. Not to compare the two , but the strings in the background of bjorks come to me , reminds me of those ethereal songs from the past. It's those subtle otherworldly effects that you just cant place , that moves my spirit the most. 10cc then , 16 horsepower now , I can see the genius in both.
Used to play this song live with my band TNT in Harrisburg PA circa '75-76. Our drummer sang it live (coming out from behind his drumkit) and we used a pre-recorded kick drum track and played it back on a small cassette player. I loved watching the video about how 10CC made it at Strawberry Studios. A truly astonishing production from the guys who also brought you the oddball classic Neanderthal Man.
I am 56 yrs old I get goosebumps listening to this legendary 70s mind blowing soft rock smooth groove classic by 10cc I am not in love to me I love Queen bohemian Rhapsody Even in 2023 blows my mind. away Mesmerising never go's away
Thanks for posting. Their recordings still sound fresh today, a sure sign of musical greatness. All four of the original line up are musical powerhouses in their own right. But this song is where Eric's engineering expertise and musical talent really shine, (he is a phenomenal guitar player; seen him play live many times). They had their reasons for splitting but I wonder what they could have done had they not. To have the imagination and skills to write and record this is genius indeed.
Even more than 40 years after, i still have goosebumps listening this song, i was so young. I still remember the cover of LP, a cowboy seated on his horse, shooted by the camera. I coulnd't imagine at this time how many voices used as background vocals.
Billy Joel Producer - Phil Ramone admitted that the breakthrough hit - JUST THE WAY YOU ARE - was a direct copy of the technique from 10cc - all the chords copied by Phil Ramone - so Billy can thank 10cc for the backing choir on his hit.
I walk past that blue plaque (2:49) regularly when I walk into Stockport for a few beers. I always look up and smile at it. 10cc have given me a lot of pleasure through their music over the years, and that little studio has produced some cracking songs.
Man, this song is one of those that I heard on the radio when I was so young that it is hard to even think of it as a song and not like, soul marrow. So that floored me from the start when I heard it in guardians of the galaxy.
I had no idea how much went into it, but it certainly peels back a few layers of the onions. I don;t think I can ever listen to it the same way again :)
This was so awesome! I'm so glad the Guardian of the Galaxy brought this tune back to my consciousness because this record was and still is (in my book) one of the best songs of that era and today...nothing can compare...kudos to Lol Creme for the absolutely best suggestions ever!
Ever since I've had some semblance of knowledge about recording and music making technology (which is going on at least 15 years now). This song has always driven me NUTS whenever it was played on the radio because the same thought ran through my head over and over ,and that thought is this: "Wait a minute!...this was recorded in 1975....that pre-dates any 'sampling' technology!..HOW THE HELL did they do this?!!?" Well, with this vid I finally know. Thank you so much for uploading it!!
This is one of the best things RU-vid has ever had. Just a genius video about an amazing song, and I can't think of anything better I've ever seen on YT.
Extremely underrated.Too bad we couldnt get more out of them. But trust me,I am very happy what is out there for our appreciation. The song "Im not in love is a complete Gem of musical engineering.I remember listenning to it as a kid in the 70s and loving it.To this day,the song blows my mind and i cant get enough of it.
What's interesting is that the "chorusing" of the 16 voices per note today would ordinarily be done with a "chorus" or "harmonizer" effect of some kind. But they recorded each voice individually, which is why each note sounds so organic. Even today, there's actually still no easy way to create the same kind of sound without actually recording each note over and over. Duplicate voices sound like...well...duplicates. In this case, it is quite literally a wall of vocal nuances that digital effects could never reproduce effectively.
Yes, but today, pop stars today don´t just harmonizer to have multiple layers and harmony´s on the vocals. Even today, each note is recorded. If you check out for example Katy Perry´s sessions, there you can see that there are a lot of tracks used for the vocals, that applies probably with Beyonce and many other pop artist´s.
