10K Miles With The F-150 Lightning. Pump It... or Dump It?

After racking up over 10,000 miles on the F-150 Lightning, has it really earned itself all the hype? Is this the best that the EV truck market has to offer, or should I dump it and move on to bigger and better offerings - or dump electric trucks entirely until things improve?

Love the channel. Maybe you can help me out with an issue I am having. I own 2 Lightnings. We use them in our EV fleet for a grounds maintenance company in Vancouver. I can't change the the charge rate on the trucks while Level 2 charging. I'm getting 6kw as the charging speed. I have 2 chargers. 30 amp and a 48 amp. My teslas I can change the charging rate easily. I have asked the dealers. They are no help. You are so right when it comes to the pro power on board. Over all happy with the trucks. Ford does need to pick some end users out of a hat and have a discussion with people to find out the irritations that come with the truck.

Like a Tesla it's not possible to change it in the vehicle but on the charger itself. If you have the Ford Charge Station Pro, you can adjust it on that. I use the simple 30A mobile Level 2 that Ford makes and therefore I'm drawing at the highest rate the truck will pull. Most of the newer charging units such as Emporia have a way to either adjust the amp draw via the app or the charger setting itself. That;s about all I know. Sorry I can't be of more help. So awesome to hear about Lightnings being used for grounds maintenance from a fellow BC Lightning owner! I use mine for my garden and pruning services Thank you so much for the feedback!

You got me wondering about this great question. What amp of breaker is your NEMA 14/50 outlet hooked up to in your home/biz, and what type of charger are you using?
@sheldonridout8799

@@truckedupevs 2 of the EVduty chargers are 30amp on a load share, so if I have 2 vehicles charging it drops to 15amps. That set up is on a 50 amp panel. My 48 amp EVduty charger is on a 60. That panel and the panel is 200amp. Im lousy with the technical jargin. Great gardener, crappy electrician . : )

@@sheldonridout8799 Haha! Me too, unfortunately. So, you're pulling 6kw even on the 48-amp that's hooked to a 60-amp breaker. Hmm. The max you could pull off a 48-amp charger @ 240v is 12 kw, so yeah, 6kw is low. the EVduty has no variable setting, or an app related to it? There's no doubt Ford is still not there as far as matching this Tesla feature, but supposedly, the truck adjusts the draw depending on conditions is all that I've read. Not very helpful, Ford 🤔 However, I've never had anything above 30a at my place, so my draw rate is typical. I'm going to pin this to the top of the comments to see if our amazing Trucked Up community might have a solution for us. Thanks again!

@@truckedupevs Thanks for translating. The chargers should automatically adjust to the max charging rate the vehicle will allow. I have 2 Tesla Y's. 2014 Nissan Leaf. 2 2012 Azure Dynamics Ford Transit Connects. 2023 Ford E Transit. My kids both have Chevy Bolts. They all receive the max the charge the chargers provide. The Lightnings stick to 6kw weather it be my 48 amp charger or the 30amp chargers.

I love these videos. I drove a friend’s Lightning today for the first time. It is a great vehicle and even though I’m determined to wait for my Silverado EV reservation, I would choose and be happy with the Lightning if I couldn’t get the Silverado. His was also the standard range and he said the same - travel hasn’t been an issue. But he’s never towed with it so that would probably be different.

I'm still in the running for one, and with Cybertruck being around the same price for close to half the range and no mid-gate, Silverado EV RST or Trail Boss gets my interest tweaked also. However, dollar for dollar, nothing comes close to the affordable work-truck nature of the Lightning...yet 😃 Thanks for the awesome support and feedback! Love the input!

I’m just like you… I’ll probably never own another ICE vehicle, and that’s a good thing. I’m 95% happy with the truck but all the things you mentioned are irritating for sure. One thing I didn’t hear you mention was the turning radius, I had a GMC 2500 HD and I never had parking lot issues like I have with the Lightning. It’s all minor, the positives much out weigh the negatives.
@truckedupevs

Thank you for the comment and for watching! That's a weird one regarding turning radius. I had a Ford Ranger with a suspension lift and off-road tires to handle where I often had to go - and the turning radius in that thing was about the same or worse than my Lightning. However, GM has always done a great job on that front both with their trucks and vans.

Hey there, love your honest opinion, too many EV channels are crazy with the them and us while ignoring issues that would affect many people. The F-150 Lightening is being imported and converted to right hand drive here in Australia, at a small cost of $225,000 - $255,000 (Aussie Dollar Bucks) WITHOUT factory warranty. Ford 150 dinosaur powered car is $116,000 and I can't imagine anyone except bankers and lawyers and a few dedicated businesses buying one. Prices will have to rise for any business unless the fuel saving is more than $110,000. A base model Ranger is $63,000, so the cost of the electric pickups is astronomical. Anyway, I digress, you did a good review and summary of the challenges, goods and bads, and I assume you still have other trucks in the wings for when this truck doesn't quite meet the grade. Hopefully a few years will be different, but people can't solve not having a place to charge or the price of the vehicles being so high, so interesting times ahead.

Thanks for the great feedback! EV trucks/UTEs have a way to go, but we're getting there, as long as the legacy automakers don't see a way to profit more by doing less. I do have an order already in for the Silverado EV and will consider future vehicles as they come to market. Hope you'll stick around for the ride!

Love your channel. I would love to enter the EV truck world but I just cannot justify taking out a mortgage to buy one. My current truck is a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi with 140,000 km and still runs well, with very little rust. It occasionally hauls a goose neck 2 horse trailer but is mostly used locally.... just like most truck people. At my age ( 75 ), I don' t know if I will be in a situation to go EV when it is time to replace the Ram... but still think that EVs are great.

Suggestion #3: Use your vehicle as a backup for home (in Québec: Inteligent backup is not allowed yet.. And if you call Ford, you end up in the Usa where they know nothing for Canada.. Not yet here). But if you use your 240v plug outside.. If you shut off your main power and open your fridge and gas furnace.. How long ca you go with your pro-power onboard? That's a quick fix! Would be nice to see you make a video on that! (I'm looking to change my 2019 Titan Nissan for a Lightnining 2024 with the vapor pump this summer.. as soon as i can sit in the Lariat and the Flash to compare after seeing with my eyes). :)

I currently own an 2021 F-150 XLT, has been a full year with this truck for me, and first truck also. So far so good i love the truck practicality confort traveling with my family from highland ca, thru San Francisco round trip. My question is even if im happy with my current truck, i'm still dreaming to own a ford lightning, as a regular home owner type of use. No solar panels installed currently at home, how ever im an electrician which will cost me $0 labor to install level 2 charger at home. Also my round trip commute from home to work each day is 2.5miles, also free chargers available at work. This factors are pushing me to really consider switch my current F-150. Any thoughts? Will be appreciate it.

Thank you for connecting. Love the feedback and input! Hey, if you love your truck and it's working for you, I'm not on of those folk who thinks things should just be replaced when they're working fine. However, if someone would benefit from your truck and you wouldn't take a big hit moving it, and you found a stinkingly good deal on a Lightning, then that might change the picture, IMHO. I'm in Canada and there's few to no deals on Lightnings. But in the States, there's supposedly some of the lowest prices ever recorded on Lightnings, even though they are one of the most awarded trucks in history. I think the 2024s with the new heat pump are going to be a lot more difficult to get a deal on, but 2023s are better equipped with standard features than the 2024s anyway (many things have been removed and turned into paid options in the new model year). It's a tough call. But by the sounds of things, you could literally drive for free! That's a hard option to pass up. One caveat on that though. How far of a drive from Highland to San Francisco return?

I'd buy one. I don't think it's fair to compare a Ford to a Tesla though. They aren't even in the same league in terms of build quality and reliability. If something went wrong with a Ford within the first 10,000 miles that would be very unexpected. A Tesla on the otherhand?

You’d never know about it in the Ford because nobody cares. I’ve had less build issues with my 3 or Y than my Lightning. On the Tesla when there was a door alignment issue the fixed it the next day. With Ford they told me they are all like that.

Suggestion #2: I'm a trapper in Québec, i need my Atv with me (Rapides des Joachims near DeepRiver Ontario but in Québec where there is Tesla chargers V3). I took pictures of a test where the Lightning dropped from 9'1/2 inch (highest point under the truck) to 8 inches with my Atv in it. I'm wondering.. Am I the only guy who is really using a 4x4 ever light duty who is looking for lightning? How does it go when you are trying your Atv in the box behind you? In the mud, on the road, in the holes? How is the range affected with a 10-foot trailer with your ATV in it to see the difference between carying into the truck and carrying in a trailer behind (small trailer). That's the most common usage you will see for sportsmen who trap and hunt). I know for sure I'll never use my generator again for the camp, I'll just plug the camp to the truck and use the 2024 on-board power (now it is supposed you can keep it on even if the truck isn't on) to power the fridge in the camp and a couple of lights. Any examples so far? I know I'll be making videos of my experience and probably will share them with you after!
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 2 месяца назад
Thanks again, Richard! I can't help you much on this since I only tow a utility trailer with a max weight of about 200~300 kgs payload at any given time, and I'm only going about 50kms one way with the load and then empty return. My average payload in the bed never exceeds around 800kg. In this scenario, my clearance drops less than an inch, if that. I can tell you that I also have no drop from the tongue weight at all in my trailer applications, but again, I'm likely a lot less weight than your ATV. I do drive a lot of FSRs in BC in the back country, and traverse a lot of water bars and narrow mining and logging access points (my Lightning already has some nice 'racing. stripes' from the trees 🙂). I have had no problem and have only scraped the bottom once on some wicked rock crawl points that followed a deep water bar. I didn't even scratch the paint off the armour plating. However, I haven't had a heavy bed payload or towing a trailer at the time. I think a video is in order, going off-road without the lift kit that is forthcoming later this summer, just using the standard stock truck as an example. The armour plating along the entire bottom is amazing, along with a significant gap between the battery pack and the plating. Ford did a lot of smart things with this. However, I would tow in an ATV with a good off-road-capable ATV trailer if it was me rather than loading my bed. Last note on the independent rear suspension and hauling. My standard range Lightning has a max payload of 2,235lbs (1,013kg) whereas the gas version has a payload slightly higher at around 2,500lbs for the 4x4 Ecoboost. Luckily there is no air suspension system that seems attractive at first until one realizes that as the airbags are inflated to create lift, they lose all their cushioning since the air bag becomes like a brick. I hope some of this is helpful - and yes, I want to see any videos you post on RU-vid! Please reach out to me if you post them.

I had my 19k checkup several months ago. It cost me about $85 for tire rotation & top off fluids. They need to get those costs down. I'd definitely purchase my lightning again it's more than replaced my prius and F150 at much lower costs. I use it locally and only charge at home. I just completed my first charge from 70% to 85% from my solar system. I have enough solar panels to do this on a really sunny day. So, even if the grid goes down, I'll be able to charge my truck. The only thing that will really put me out of business is an EMP attack. But then I won't be any worse off than everyone else. I've said it many times before if I had to depend on public chargers, I wouldn't have purchased my lightning, but that's not the trucks fault. The charging infrastructure just isn't ready for EV travel & and it is far too expensive, in my opinion.

Some EV owners may not realize that charging an EV is considered to be a continuous load and therefore the actual current draw including losses should be de-rated to 80%. Even with a NEMA 14-50 receptacle, and do spend the extra coin for an industrial rated one, on a 30 A breaker the current should be limited to 24 A (5.76 kWh @ 240 VAC). Similarly on a 50 A breaker the current should be limited to 40 A (9.6 kWh @ 240 VAC). I don't think living in the country and doing country things is a privilege, its a lifestyle choice. Your and my luck is being born when we did where average people could make these choices. Whats happening now is the hollowing out of the middle class. We need to reverse it so average people can again make these choices. If you live in the country, and do country things, then a truck is needed. Its not privilege. Remember when farming wasn't a privilege? If you happen to live in the country, then chances are you have to fix machinery, maybe have a welder, have outbuildings for solar panels, so an ev truck fits in quite nicely. We charge our tesla with a 240 v 20 amp welding circuit. You may also have a business, and your power may not be as dependable as in the city. Back up batteries, solar and electric vehicles and machinery may make lots of sense. We are starting a meadery and we will have inventory that should be kept at 55 F to maintain quality. We don't like power outages. Our bad luck is most trucks are not being used as they should by people who don't really need them. Truck makers have catered to this and have made trucks much more fancy than they need to be and more expensive as well. I bee keep and get in and out of my truck with a dirty sticky beesuit all the time. My loads of honey supers are often sticky as well. I could use a truck that I can pressure wash, inside and out.

Fair. I've got a good gig, and if that situation doesn't exist for some, wanted to acknowledge that. EV trucks might not weigh in as a great option in many scenarios. My personal view? If one is driving a truck and using it less than 160km (100 miles) daily, an ev truck works. That takes care of 80% of all truck buyers. Still, being respectful of others' situation is important for my channel. If I take my bubble only, it's not always average of a larger demographic. Love the FUD-chucker bots, trolls, and people like you who can't use Mr. Google - or count. It's great entertainment to experience regression, ignorance and cognitive dissonance in real-time technicolor. The only lots filled with unsold Lightnings are the crooked dealerships who bought crap-piles of Lariats and Platinums when all orders and waiting lists were for XLTs and PROs, hoping to rip off buyers with 'market adjustments' and got caught with their pants at their ankles when smart consumers told them to go pound sand.
