From small game, to turkey-takedown specialist, modern shotshell design and components have taken the .410 shotgun to new levels - leveling gobblers in its wake. This untraversable caliber (.410 is not a gauge) can be packaged in petite shotguns, making them super handy, lightweight and easy to carry. It’s the perfect for folks looking for those attributes and an ideal fit for smaller-statured hunters. The fact it kicks like a butterfly, is another big plus, particularly when talking turkey loads. Shotgun manufacturers are meeting this growing trend head-on, producing purpose-bult .410’s with turkey-specific features to optimize the platform. Tune in to see if dusting off the 410 in the back of your gun safe, or investing in a new .410 is right for you.

You are exactly right. Folks from where I live in S.C. have been cleanly taking deer and pigs with a .410 for a long long time. I think the biggest challenge the .410 faces is getting past a lot of hunters' egos. They think it's a child's cartridge or a "starter gun" but used properly it is very effective.

.410 was originally a British land owners round that steadily grew popularity as a light weight downed pilots round post WW2. Great for small game, defended myself and two other against wolves with it during a winter hunt/primitive camp. .410 is adequate as long as you dial it in well and know it's very short range limitations. Cool video idea you guys.

Grew up learning on a single shot 410, rabbits, squirrels, the occasional partridge. I still think it made me a better shooter. back when ammunition was easy to find I had a good 410 round that patterned well at 25 yards for my kids to hunt turkeys. I am going to get some TSS loads and see if I can leave the 3 1/2 12 at home.

I think what some folks miss is that a #6 pellet leaving a 12 bore at 1300 f/s carries the same energy as a #6 pellet leaving a .410 bore at 1300 f/s....and you just said that...an analogy that I use to explain shot density to folks is throwing golf balls and ping pong balls. They are about the same diameter but the golf ball is much denser and that relates to how far it travels and how bad it hurts when it hits you.

I was 8 years old when I got my first firearm. It was a Sears & Roebuck bolt action single shot .410. It took a lot of squirrels and rabbits. Flying game is a different story. My brother did nail a woodcock with that same gun. My stepmother's father was a about 5' 6" and 120 pounds. He loved to turkey hunt with the .410. He had a break action single shot with full choke. He even shot deer with it before Missouri restricted deer to 20 gauge and higher for deer. He got a 12 gauge shotgun but hated the recoil. One of my uncles had a Savage Model 24 in .22 over .410. For him it was the best squirrel gun he ever had.

I've hunted with a Stevens 410 for many years mainly in my youth. I and my hunting partner picked up Tristar semi-autos 3 years ago, and started reloading 3" hulls with TSS using the improved choke in #9s primarily for doves, and #7s for Turkeys, #7s for upland birds, #7s & #3s for ducks, geese and cranes. For waterfowl #7 TSS is in the pipe for the 1st round and #3 TSS for the other two. All of these loads have clocked 1420ish thru the crony. TSS has been devastating with these pellet sizes on everything we hunt. The #3 TSS packs quite a bit more punch (it equates to BBB lead shot) (and 40 to 60 yard is no problem) however, there is only 36 pellets so you need to be on your game. As others have said and I agree its a good idea to pattern your gun and its really a seasoned shooters gun. As a youth I started hunting with the Stevens 410 and probably went thru 15 boxes of shells before I ever hit a dove or a pheasant so it was a bit frustrating at first but eventually got better with the little gun. I also reload for all my other gauges but in the last three years I've only shot the 410 with TSS reloads. The Tristar is a little over 5lbs with little to no recoil or muzzle blast. I will continue to use it as long as I can get the necessary reloading supplies after my current supply runs out. Sweet sweet little 410 gun.

He goes over it pretty fast, but I have seen a .410 with an open choke tube that a guy loaded with his own triple-ball shells, using paper-patched muzzleloader pistol balls. The cool thing was that at 60 yards all three balls were in a 5-6" triangle. His worst pattern was 8". That's MUCH better than any commercial 000 buck loads I've seen for a .410.

I 've always heard regarding wing shooting with a 410 is it's either a youth caliber or an expert caliber. I can't imagine being able to use 9 shot 28,20 or 12 gauge tss at 30-40 yards on a duck. That's a game changer. Very expensive though. Federal 3" 410 #9 tss pellet count=294. Federal speed shok 3" #4 steel=240 pellets. Velocity is 1100(410) vs 1400(12 gauge).

Won't be using anything that cost 50 bucks for 5 shots though. lol #4,5, or 6 if I can find them. I do plan on getting a cylinder screw in choke and some brenekke (sp?) slugs if I can find them. And a red dot. Deer hunting is moslty dense woods here. I use a 30-30 with open sights almost exclusively. But would like to take one with the Stevens 301. FYI up here in Maine, you can legally hunt deer with a 22 magnum rimfire rifle. I think it is the only state in the union. Not that I would, but nice to know.

I love the .410! If I know I'm going to be walking around in the woods for squirrel/rabbit hunting, I'll take a .410 any day over my heavy 12ga. We recently bought my 10yo Son a Mossberg Super Bantam. He loves it! It's just the right size for him. There are drawbacks to it including some that are mentioned here in this video. The fixed modified choke is the biggest one I think. However, I have taken my fair share of Dove with my fixed-full Mossberg 500. My one HUGE complaint is the price of Federal TSS shells. $25-30 for FIVE shells is insane to me. That turkey better come jump in my lap & die right there! And that price is for .410. 12/20ga is even MORE expensive! But, if it gets my folks in the woods, let'er rip I guess.

I have an irrational fondness for the inexpensive Stoeger side-by-sides. A .410-bore is definitely on the "next-list"; either a 22" or a 26" Uplander. They also have a 20" .410 coach-gun, but the 22" has a better balance. For wingshooting and skeet the 26" is better swinging. You can also get .410-bore inserts for 12ga. and 20ga. shotgun barrels; both just the chamber or full-length of the barrel... A 28ga. Stoeger Condor over-under for doves also on the list.

A .410 would be good for close range small game, like grouse in the woods.

I met old guy in a store, that used .303 brit brass cases to reload for his 410. He just used a cardboard disk and some wax to close it up. Don't know how true that is, but you could look into it.

If Hornady introduced a 100-110 ELD-X in .277 and a 85-95gr CX and loaded them in their Hornady BLACK line they could help foster a healthy resurgence for the 6.8 SPC Because haters gonna hate, but if hornady offers and supports something it's probably going to do well (even if its a relatively small niche) For someone wanting more punch than a 5.56 from 0-300yds the SPC is a wonderful choice. Side note, a slight rename could hint more at its purpose beyond just "SPC" they could call it the 6.8 Thumper, or the 6.8 Hammer, because that's what it is in an AR format: it's a short to medium range hammer (compared to a 5.56/.223

I'm looking to buy a silenced .410 Mossberg 500 shotgun here in the UK. It's an excellent garden gun and great for the kids.

The step from 20gauge to .410 doesn't necessarily need to be taken. 28gauge is a thing, and I do think it's starting to grow. Benelli put out Super Black Eagles in 28 not long ago. Just as a matter of geometry, the small bore stuff quickly struggles with pellet counts, trying to fit all of that into a diminutive space. At some geometric point things become much easier to stack pellets and get a decent pattern.

The 410 is a legit rabbit/squirrel/ruff grouse option, beyond that I really have my doubts.

Tss .410 round will outshoot a 12 ga with lead in most cases. Don’t doubt tss, it’s on a different level

@@-B_G- Used tungsten and bismuth shot for waterfowl hunting, I know it's effective. I guess for turkeys and relatively stationary targets at close ranges it's an option.

jayfxdx- I have a turkey . 410 and with tss 9.5 will outshoot and out penetrate my 12ga with #6 3 in magnum lead loads at 40 yds. It’s very impressive stuff for shotguns

@@-B_G- Sounds like it fills a niche for turkeys quite nicely! My shotgunning consists of a waterfowl hunting in Saskatchewan with 30+ bird daily limits and a case of 3.5 nitro steel BBB. TSS or bismuth is just to much $$$

jayfxdx- sounds like a waterfowl paradise, snow geese this time of yr? All we shoot here in GA is wood ducks with a 3 bird limit, and occasional mallard or teal. 20 ga with #4 steel is what I use in fall waterfowl season

Inside 25 yards, it's okay for small game. The tss loads extend the range, but are very expensive.

.410 is taking a terrible beating right now and has been for as far back as I can remember. .410 3" 11/16 ounce small game hunting loads at $20.00 a box really messes up the attraction when 12 ga 2 3/4" 1 or 1 1/8 ounce is about $11.00 a box. $9.00 a box difference is a significant premium. Availability is also a huge issue now. Running a .410 is actually a special mission these days.
