In a cartridge-era dominated by data tables filled with racy exterior ballistics, is there any room for modesty anymore? The fellas take 10 to pay mind to a fantastic-classic not soon forgotten in hunting camp: The light-recoiling, soft-spoken, and absolutely adequate for North American medium-game .257 Roberts.

Guys, the "+P" is the real Roberts. The "standard" pressure load is a download due to some old Mauser 88 Commission rifles that were rechambered to it. Any modern rifle handles the +P. 100gr @ 3050 is not unreasonable, and Federal used to load a 120gr at 2900.

About 1983 I bought a Remington 700 Classic in 257 Roberts. I handload, and I have been very happy with the rifle. It has been very accurate and pleasant to shoot. I have shot many Utah Mule deer with it, and each time it has dropped the deer in its tracks. The 100 grain load is very deadly.

I bought the same rifle in 1983. I hand loaded 117 grain spitzer for mule deer. I don’t want to be too graphic, but I shot one through the lungs and it went strait down. The bush behind the deer looked like a Christmas tree covered in strips of lung 4” long.

I have two rifles in .257 Roberts. A vintage Remington 722 (in a new laminate stock) and a Ruger #1 International (stainless). An efficient cartridge. Easy to load for and to shoot. Very effective on all class II game here in North America. Commercial ammunition is just about impossible to find, rendering the .257 Roberts just about dead. But for reloaders ... this is a fun cartridge to work with. Especially in that #1 when I’m not limited to published standard cartridge OAL. I appreciate these 10 minute talks. Entertaining & informative. Keep up the good work.

This was an awesome talk. I love the .257 Roberts. It is everything you said. But, also like you said, remains a second class citizen compared to 6.5 Creed or even .243 Win. Still, it’s delightful, packs plenty of power, and kills deer, hog, antelope, coyotes, Javelina and paper graveyard dead without breaking a sweat. You can shoot it all day and not get beat up. It’s the Honda Accord of medium action rifle cartridges without any kind of following. I load mine with a 100 grain Sierra Pro Hunter over IMR 4451 to around 2800 fps and my Ruger M77 loves it. Thanks for recognizing such a wonderful cartridge!

Mine loves the 100 grainer as well. It shoots the Sierra Pro Hunter and the Nosler Ballistic Tip very, very well. And if I really want to step down to strictly Varmint Hunt, the 85 Grain ballistic Tip is just pure magic.

Thank you for bringing out the .257 Roberts, i own and shoot my Mashburn arms custom built.257 Roberts, this rifle is my prize possession in long guns, so smooth to shoot and extremely accurate, and does the job on everything I’ve taken with it, i live in the Rocky Mountains colorado and my .257 does it all for me, now would you consider doing a 10 minute on my 2nd favorite my 1947 Winchester model 71 rebarelled in .450 Alaskan, my 71 was done in coopers bay Alaska, I lived in Alaska from 1968 till 1975 and these lever guns were very scarce, but im very blessed to have mine, extreme recoil and extreme knock down power or load her down and enjoy it, many elk have fallen from “thumper” and nothing sounds like a 71 action, would be really awesome for you to speak about this hard hitting round and i mean at both ends, thank you so much for what you guys do!

The .257 Roberts is such a joy to shoot. If you've never had the opportunity to shoulder a rifle in this caliber, you are missing out on something. It just performs and is so mild recoiling. The perfect case capacity to bore diameter, making it very efficient. Never really got it's due when it came out. It's a Classic. My favorite for any shooter of any age. Thank you, the 257 Roberts is long overdue for some needed recognition. I owned a 243 and a 6 mm Remington but settled on the 257 Roberts because it did everything these ‘6’s did, only better. 38 years later I still use it. I liked the idea of a custom build on the Mauser action, add some free bore to the chamber to utilize the case capacity to full advantage.

A true Roberts comes in a standard or long action... not the bastardized short action Remington pushed. They were waiting on powder development to catch up for the 25-06. Remington purposefully tried to sabotage the Roberts because it was the perfect deer cartridge and didn't require 10% more powder, unlike the 25-06.

This cartridge can come surprisingly close to 25-06 velocities when loaded to it’s potential; which has always been heavily downloaded by factory ammo manufacturers. Even the “+P” designated options aren’t hitting its true potential. 🤫 don’t tell anyone though. Total mind blower.
@davewinter2688

You are exactly right. SAAMI MAP for the BOB is a joke. Original pressure for the 7x57 173 grain military load in the model 93 action was 50,370 CUP which translates to almost 59,000 PSI. When the BOB was relabeled +P the new cases had thicker wall around the web so the case capacity was reduced. That results in higher pressures for the exact same loads that were listed for the standard case. To illustrate the blue smoke and mirrors that some reloading manuals use, my 2002 Nosler manual #5 had 11 different powders used for 4 different bullet weights, 85, 100, 115 and 120 grains in the standard 257 Roberts case. None of them were rated +P. No warnings of any kind were given except the standard “Approach maximum loads with caution”. All of those loads except the 85 grain RL15 are duplicated exactly in the latest 2002 Nosler #9 but they are now labeled +P with the warning that those loads “were developed to the 257 Roberts +P pressure level of 58,000 psi, and should only be used in modern firearms and +P cases designed for those pressures”. You can bet that was written by a lawyer! The only difference between the Nosler #5 and #9 manuals for the BOB loads, other than the lawyer warnings, are the elimination of the 85 grain RL15 load and the addition of a 110 grain load and 5 powders not used or not available in the 2002 #5 edition. I haven’t gone through all my loading manuals to compare but I bet I will find similar changes with new lawyerspeak. 😊

Colonel Townsend Whalen necked up a 30-06 to a .35 caliber. End of story. Bigger bullet, more inertia bigger hole, more recoil, etc. Townsend, along with Maj. Ned Roberts (.257 Roberts) and A.O. Niedner (25-06), had a hand in the development of many wildcats that eventually turned commercial

I'm building a Bob on a M1922 (FN) Brazilian Mauser action. Having it throated to 3 inch COaL. I can get the 120 Partition to 3000fps. The longer COaL is what Roberts originally went with in an intermediate action length. Remington shortened it to 2.775 and put it in a short action and that crippled it. If you have a Bob look at Reloader 17 powder.

Thanks for the video. When Remington standardized the. 257 Roberts they deliberately kept the pressure low because they wanted to use 117 grain round nosed bullets that had been made for the .25 Remington cartridge. As I am sure you are aware the .25 caliber model 8 and 14 rifles didn't sell very well. They kept pressure/velocity low so the old 117 grain bullets would expand rather than fragment. In my experience it gets the job done on deer as well as anything else and is pretty easy on the rib meat. Cheers!

The +P finally was added to the .257 Roberts because they couldn't put the loads out without it because of some substandard rifles that were put out. To protect people who bought these substandard rifles they opted to make the cartridge less than what it was designed to do.

Of all the cartridges that Remington has farked up, the Roberts is at the top of the list. They went out of their way for decades downloading the round with the most inefficient combination imaginable. The round needed to be put in rifles with 1-8 twist, a, bullet weights in the neighborhood of 130 grains, and loaded to it's potential. Handloaders and custom rifle builders keep the round alive. It's the best worst kept secret out there.

I don’t know if you will see this comment I just watched this vid for the first time and had to comment I believe some corrections are in order 1. Remington 117 round nose is listed at 2650 fps. You comment that the 243 is really close in bullet weight. Not so much the real advantage is the 20% increase in weight at 120 grain. Loading 100 gr to increase velocity just makes it less of a cartridge = a 243. Yes I know bc and sd is poor however the 257 kills way out of proportion to what it should do ya gotta shoot one to see the way it works. Hand loaded it will take anything. My longest one shot kill was a 3 point buck at 465 yds through rib lungs clavicle on the off side exit the chest penetrating off leg through bone stopping under the skin. Fully mushroomed. This from a Remington 117 round nose at 2650. Running buck 3 jumps and pulled up Those who don’t know will say it can’t happen but it it does. 25/06 is cool but not as efficient as 257 velocity increases not proportional to the powder burned No it’s not as sexy as some new stuff but once you use it you’ll be hooked

Both shoot amazing. I shoot 168 bergers with rl26 at over 3300 with no pressure signs. They are both single shots. I also have a 7rum with the same demenstion as the one with the Benchmark barrel. The 7Rum is a cannon with 180 Sierra match kings. It's a hard choise between the stw or the Rum. The 28 nosler sounds good but the Stw are cheaper in the end and in my book the Winchester brass is better than the Nosler because of the primer pockets are so hard to put primers into. Why should I have to trim out primer pockets that cost almost 80.00 for 25 pieces when i can buy 50 Winchester brass for. Just saying. The 28 nosler doesnt impress that much.

I didn't have a 257 Roberts, but I told them I would take all the ammo they had at that price, they told me we have more in the back, I said i would take all of it, they had 50 boxes, so 1000 rounds cost me $100. I called a gunsmith i knew, told him to order me a Doulass XX premium 25 cal barrel, dropped of a German M98 I had, had him profile the barrel the same as a Winchester featherweight, put it in a Bishop stock gun shot MOA with the factory ammo, and 1/2 MOA with my handloads

Hmmm, 'by modern standards not that great of a cartridge'...you seemed a little surprised when you read hornady's factory 117sst going almost 3000fsp... You can load 100's at 3100 as well. it is 'not' 'not that great of a cartridge'... Nosler's factory loads push 110 accubonds 3000fsp.

The 257 Roberts seems like a good cartridge. I haven't had any personal experience with one. However, one more little detail comes in play. It is too long to be a true "short action" cartridge, yet shooters likely go for the 25-06 if they are looking for a "long action" cartridge. I think Kimber makes their magazines and actions a little longer than typical "short action" for that reason.
@davewinter2688

The early Kar 98 Mauser actions are perfect for a BOB. A medium length action that can take full advantage of the BOB’s case capacity without some of the feeding problems that can come with some full length actions just like it does with the 7x57. Also strong enough to handle any of the so-called plus P loads that really aren’t that hot. SAAMI standards for both cartridges are a joke.

Me and my brother had the pickings of the safe when we were about 10 & 11 on what we wanted to hunt with and my brother took the model 700 .270 win and I didn't know what I wanted until my grandpa told me I could have his 257 and it's been a dream rifle. Hunted over 10 years with it every season. I've also take out our savage lever action .250 savage and it's a ball to shoot.

.257 Roberts +P - Double Tap Ammunition, Barnes ttsx 100g, 3175 fps. BC 357, Compare that to the average 25-06, with that loading, they are neck and neck. My .257 is a Browning BBR (precursor to the A-bolt). It's the only Browning I've ever seen in 257 Roberts, but I'm sure others are out there.

Yes, I believe a properly loaded Roberts is nipping at the heels of the 25 06 without the need for a long barrel.

Thanks for the talk on the Roberts gents. I am a biased Aussie for the "quarter bore" and shoot wild pigs (hogs) in daylight hours exclusively with a Lee Enfield 303/25 and 100gr soft point flat based projectiles with zero fuss out to 250 yards. The Roberts is a touch more power than my rifle and I have always wanted one but the reality is that the .243 has all but destroyed it's chances.

I have lots of rifles in lots of different bore diameters from .224 to .458. I like them all. I don't get to hunt much anymore because of bad back and bad knees. I've had model 99 Savage in 250-3000 for many years but it has the old 1/14 twist so I'm having a nice already sporterized Kar. 98 8x57 Mauser re-barreled to BOB so that I can load the longer 120 grain bullets for when I do get to hunt. 2800 fps plenty good out to 300 yards point blank hold.

I bought one in the Remington 700 Mountain Rifle when the first came out and I've killed 10 dump trucks full of deer with it. I hand loaded 100-120 grainers and my gun, even with the thin barrel on my Mountain Rifle, shoots 1/2-3/4" groups. I don't chrony anything....don't need to because mine will kill out to 300 yards with no problem and with factory loads, the Roberts is, at worst only 200 FPS, +/-, slower than the .25-06 and its more efficient with its powder than the -06. I've never lost an animal and most of them drop dead within two-three steps after being hit. I've killed a lot of deer with a .243 but I never felt endeared to that cartridge. I've also very fond of the .270 and .30-06 but I've never felt under gunned with my Roberts. I would like to have owned one in the Remington Model 700 Classic though.

The 257 Bob is one of those inherently accurate. Sort of like the 222. The 257 Bob ai is a whole different animal. Load that baby up with a 131gr BlackJack and it’s remarkable. Great mid-long range chambering.

My understanding is that the commercialization of the .257 Roberts basically neutered it. The commercial offerings are underpowered and the bullet availability is now highly limited, which deprived the cartridge of its once vaunted versatility.

Remington in a 722 and 700 and kimber still build it on a short actions. Which is a complete travesty! They shoot good just cant take full advantage of the cartridges potential! I have a new fn model 70 winchester and its built on a 30-06 length action. So I can seat bullets out as far as i want.

I use the 100 Grain Nosler partition , I think the rifle shoots it’s best with the 100 gr.. The 117 gr is a little long for the short action, takes up to much powder space.
